Yes I wrap my yarn a little differently, I was a knitter for years and this was the hardest part of learning to crochet for me - learning how to hold and manipulate the yarn!

The first stitch in the foundation row is misleading. Also, if I wrap the yarn like you do, I can't pull the stitches through easily when i yarn over.
