The entire blanket is made using a Half-Shell Crochet stitch. This is modified from a pattern I found years ago on the web. I apologize, I don't have the source to credit the original pattern.

For this blanket, I used 4 different colors of the Lion Brand Feels Like Butta Yarn - two skeins of each color are required. You can purchase the yarn here: amzn.to/2PlNJqb
Blanket Size: 26" x 28"
Hook Size: F
Abbreviations:
CH: Chain
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
I chose to alternate colors every 8 rows, but you can make your own pattern.
Base Row: Chain 100 (Your base row needs to be a multiple of 3 + 1)
Row 1: Double Crochet in 4th chain from hook, CH 2, Single Crochet in same chain as last DC, * skip 2 chains [2 DC, CH 2, 1 SC] in next chain; repeat from * to the end of the row. CH3, turn.
Row 2: In the first Chain 2 space [1 DC, CH 2, 1 SC]. * In the next Chain 2 Space [2 DC, CH 2, 1 SC], repeat from * to end of the row. Chain 3, turn.
That is all there is to the pattern! You simply use a double crochet and single crochet to create an adorable blanket!

I learned some basics from mom in 5th grade but stopped because mom is left-handed, and she would get stressed out trying to teach her right- handed over excited daughter. 😅 Then, during middle school, I grabbed the needles again with books and kept learning. If you only need to adjust by a couple stitches in the foundation chain, you can use the tail end to add in a couple more chains, or pick the knot out to take one or two out. No "frogging" (ripping) necessary.

My very favorite stitch, and I think yours is the only place I have found this stitch. It's the stitch that was in the Jamie blanket. The only difference I can see is that you chain two at the beginning of the row. This makes a scalloped edging for the blanket

That is my very favorite stitch. I learned it as the Jamie blanket stitch. If you chain 2, dc in first sp, check 2, sc it will make a shell edging.

That pattern kind of sounds and looks familiar to me. It may be called Jaime's baby blanket by Lion brand. It makes pretty shell stitch for a blanket
I am using the stitch to make a full size afghan right now, turning out good, but the delicate look of a baby blanket is my favorite for this pattern.

I am excited that you are trying crocheting, it is my favorite pastime! For the border, go to the base row and start a new row across by first chaining 2 and follow the pattern for a new row. It just gives all 4 sides the scalloped look. Let me know if you have more questions. Have fun!

I started crocheting 15 months ago and I’m hooked! I have made 6 Afghans all using different stitches. I’m starting one for my 16 yr old grandson and I’m going to use this pattern! Do you think I could do solid colors and every third color do the two colored yarns? Or would that not look good because of the thickness?

I love this pattern. What would be a good size chain for a baby afghan? Looking forward to seeing more patterns.
This one, I chained 100. You need to have the number divisible by 3, then add 1. You can always add more rows -- this one is 8 rows of 8 color changes -- so 64 rows. This is a great size for a baby seat. Let me know if you try it!

I always do my chain in a larger hook, like .5 to 1 size bigger than the one I plan to use. It keeps blanket even, no curling or tightness

I have what I think is the original pattern on an old wrapper used it for years it was on lion brand pompadour baby yarn it was called Jamie's blanket

I’m currently working on this exact pattern. Although you made me realize it’s CH2 after the 2DC. I’ve been chaining 3. Still looks great and I’m too far along to go back.

DIY On The House I tend to crochet tight so I don’t think there is too much difference.
I Like the way you encased your tail in the same color row while your crocheting. Having a ton of tails to weave in at the end of a project is no fun. Thank you!

I really liked how you explained each step slowly. I am on the 3rd row & the right corner doesn't lay correctly. It pulls. l started out the 2nd row in the first 2 ch space with 3 ch & 1 dc & then the rest of the pattern, but it doesn't look right. I think I need to pull it all out & start over., Help!

Thank you for sharing. I understood the pattern very easily but got confused as to why you tied it off before you even added the second color then when you did add the second color, I didn’t really see or understand how it was done. You didn’t tie the colors together which is how I have done it but somehow just started crocheting with the color. Maybe a better closeup of the color transition would help. Again, thank you for helping us beginners. I’ve recently realized, I prefer crocheting over knitting. I thought it was the other way around but decreasing in knitting to me is a nightmare and I dislike perling so crocheting is what I’m going to put my focus on now. It seems a lot easier. I’ve been learning a lot of new patterns on TH-cam and having success on my projects unlike knitting. 😎
Sorry about that! Still practicing how to do the camera angles! To start a new color, you make a slip knot on your hook, insert it in the same place you tied off the last color, and start again. I totally agree, I LOVE crocheting and tolerate knitting. Thanks for the advice -- I am always learning!
I really like this pattern but I definitely use a much different method for changing colors that saves a lot of time and yarn

how did she go all the way back to make the scalloped edge? did she finish the blanket and then cut the yarn and then go to the bottom and just do the pattern once or was there another way?

It should work fine! You would just need to use a larger hook and adjust the width of the blanket, because it is bulkier yarn, but it should work! Let me know how it goes, I may need to try it!

Lovely tutorial, thank you. I have a question, it looks like the starting chain "shrinks" as you begin the first half shell stitch row. I would like to make my baby blanket much wider and longer (about 36" x 36") So is there "shrinkage" and if so, how much? Thank you.
I am excited that you want to make the blanket! I don’t have one started right now to measure - but doing it as a mathematical problem, 21″ wide equals 4.75 chains per inch. That would mean that you would need to chain 168 + 1 to get it to be roughly 36″ wide. If you don’t mind, I would love to know how close that calculation is! Have fun!

You may crochet tighter than I do. Try loosening up your stitches and see if that helps. You may also need to do a larger hook. Let me know if either of those help.
Mine was curly too for the first few rounds but the farther I got the better it looked

You did 13 to start a small sample does this mean you do an even number chains and add one more after you get the width you want for it to turn out at the end of the rows?
Your base row needs to be a multiple of 3 + 1 -- so for this one I chained 100, which is 99 + 1.
