The 5H seems really soft? That doesn't look right to me... 5H pencils generally are expected to be very hard, almost tearing up the page if you push too hard, and they don't really go that dark. The midtone of that 5H is usually the darkest I can get my 4H pencil to go, I think. But maybe I'm just nitpicking
I know right! I was looking at the comment to see if anyone else noticed. This is definitely too dark, l usually use a 2h for sketching and it can't go that dark, so 5h is impossible
I noticed she was using a really cheap brand of pencil you can get at craft stores like Joann. A better comparison might've been made with a consistent, high-quality brand like Staedtler or Derwent.
I actually have this pencil, it's a very popular one in my sketch class. I didn't know about them until I had to borrow a pencil off of my seat partner who uses these, I was pretty amazed by the dark values and told him so, he then laughed and told me to keep the pencil because he had more. They are expensive but they are also kind of worth it, it's better than being frustrated that you can't get enough dark values or if you don't want to cart around a whole pencil collection. Now I just have this one and a 2H for initial sketches and it pretty much covers all my bases.
If I was you and I was talking to your seat partner I would bow down in thankfulness and refer to them as a God I LOVE THOSE PENCILS BUT IM BROKE SO I DONT HAVE ALOT and it's hard to find too where I'm at
I’m twice your age (I know, I feel it) and back in the day, pencil leads in different wooden pencil brands would vary wildly. Out in the sticks where I lived, there were no art stores, not that HS artists could afford. So we collected different brands for different harnesses. I remember getting fuzzy pencils at Claire’s (the girl store at the mall) that were SUPER soft, black as our teenaged souls. Ah, the memories…
Whats concerning is how she did not notice it was a 5b and not a5h right away.I have only used 2h and I could tell that was not a 5h,you feel it right away the lead is very hard on h pencils.
Clara Steuerwald thank you! I don’t know from what alternative universe you guys from but here the standard is HB. I mean. They always made a big deal at school when taking a test to make sure we use a HB.

Hey SuperRaeDizzle, about a year ago, you made a video about all your art supplies. I’m 13 years old and kind of new to the whole art thing, so I was wondering if you could make a video about all your art supplies now and the basics/recommendations for beginner artists. Your so inspiring to me and want to be like you when I grow up and your such an amazing artist, keep up the wonderful work!!!
I’ve tried those pencils too! They’re actually really good and I totally loved them. My brother bought them, and he gave me like two of them, it was super nice.
@A H oh yeah true but that pencil was not meant for sketching just a more general pencil like ticonderoga and dixon wood pencils which are usually longer
Jey O. I know I am late, but this pencil is much longer than normal pencils. In the pencil loving community (a real thing), when you go to buy a pencil case, you have to make sure it is long enough to hold blackwings. Many pencil cases advertise that they will fit a black wing
I’d love to see a series of you trying different art mediums like: cross stitching, knitting, sculpting and quilting, etc. Would be really interesting to see!
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE !! Have a good holiday, stay warm, and be careful if you drive! The roads are gonna be frozen and it’s important to be safe whenever you leave the house! Hope you enjoy the day with your family!
@Michael Kevin Millet Agreed! I am more than willing to pay over 20 for quality pencils. Last I looked I could order them from Amazon, but they are out of stock until January. I can also order them from Blick art supplies.
Happy New Year Rae if you are reading this which you probably aren’t but I just wanted to say thank you. I started watching you about a year ago and you have taught me so much about art and my art has improved so much because of you and you are such an amazing artist and you taught me basically everything I know about art like what supplies are good what supplies are bad and how to use some supplies. So thank you so much for always being there for me so I have something to watch and learn you are amazing ilysm!
These pencils are really good for music or notating music bc they are dark but erase well. Of course there are cheaper music pencils but that is a big use for them
Nice video! I actually own a set of 12 of these pencils. I don't have the Palonino Blackwing Pencils, but I have the Pearl Blackwing Pencils. There are actually three types of Blackwing Pencils, the Blackwing 602, Blackwing Pearl, and the Palomino. They are different from each other. The Palomino version was created to have a smooth laydown for drawing, and the 602 version was created to have a quality writing experience. When I was buying these pencils, I have a hard time deciding which variety to get because they both looked great. This is when I stumbled upon the Pearl variety. It is a combination of the Palomino and 602, so that's what I bought! I use the pencils for writing and for drawing, and they're excellent. One major condition though! In order to sharpen these pencils, you need to buy the exclusive Blackwing sharpener, you can't sharpen them well without it. I have the sharpener, and I also have and accessory called a 'Point Guard'. It's what it sounds like, it goes over the top of the pencil to protect it when traveling or merely in a bag. Anyway, I just wanted to give you a little paragraph about these pencils, because I have some experience with them. I would highly recommend them, and they're totally worth the money.
I love the Palomino. They have different hardness grades (but I think they start with HB and then goes softer) and so many beautiful designs. I use a Palomino for writing (grade HB like) because it feels so good. None other pencil which I used have such a texture.
MERRY CHRISTMAS RAAAEE! I GOT MY FIRST *EVER* SET OF *PRISMACOLOR!* So now, of course, I'm drawing with them while watching this video! Happy Holidays!
“If you’re an everyday person...” That’s exactly why this is the best pencil in the world. It isn’t for the everyday person. It’s made specifically for those who have refined their abilities and have reached that of which only a very few handful of artists have been able to accomplish- true mastery of pencilling as well as those who have perfected their own unique art style. These are absolutely fantastic and are definitely not meant to be beginner friendly.
nah, that's elitist bullshit. Something isn't the best simply because it's not for regular people. This pencil might be fabulous and it might serve professionals the best, since it's quality matches their skill but implying that it's the best because it's not for the filthy masses is ridiculous and insulting.
Ceares you may take it as insulting but the truth of the matter is that there are just some products that are made to favor and are better appreciated and catered for the intended and very specific market. That’s where my comment was going. You had to be an extremist and make it sound like someone is enabling segregation. Any random person can pick up a piece of wood and do something with it. But a carpenter will take that same wood, analyze it, realize what kind of wood it is, what it’s best suited for, and THEN make something only a carpenter is capable of making. Do you understand now? It’s not elitist in the slightest, it’s common sense. A better example for you if that wasn’t enough, anyone can hop on a computer and use MS paint, but not everyone can use Photoshop or any of the Adobe programs to its full potential but they still have access to it. Because those programs were not made for beginners.
Just found your channel. Great content! True story: I started using the 602 after reading that Steinbeck used them and they're durable AF. I'm also a huge Patriots fan. On a whim, I sent a box to Gillette Stadium for Coach Belichick (a well-known pencil user). He always has a cheap off-brand tucked behind his ear. Sure enough, at the Superbowl in '18, he had a 602 in his usual spot 🤣🤣 never sent me a thank-you note though! Still waiting on that lol...keep up the great work 👍
Awhile ago I found one of those pencils randomly on the ground without an erasers and I was a little bit shorter then a full sized pencil because it was used and it’s pretty great and I love it so much :)
For sketches like this i use wolffs carbon pencils which appear to be quite similar to the pencil on this video, they come in a pack of 4 with gradients of b, 2b, 4b and 6b and are really dark and don't have that horrible reflection that graphite pencils have they can be used from dark to light and blend extremely well plus the cost just under £6 on amazon. I highly recommend them.
I love my Blackwings. I use the Pearl ones. I bought a box 1.5-2 years ago and I'm still working my way through the pencils. They last way longer than anything else I've used and I am very happy with their performance. They are very pricey, but I am pleased and will be buying more.

Hi, i wanted to know what you use to blend the pencil in better, i am very inspired by your art and want to be a artist like you one day, if you could tell me what to use for blending then i would really appreciate it.💕
The Palomino Blackwing in my opinion is the absolute best pencil I have ever used, when it comes to just using one pencil for line drawing and shading. I don't have to use a blending stump as much. I have been using Derwent for years and I still do but I have to say that the Palomino is much more superior in my opinion. Fantastic review btw ✏
Derwent graphite sucks. Japanese makers and Faber Castell make the best Graphite, thus the best pencils! Staedtler comes after and then Kohinoor. Derwents only pencil that is top of the line, is their White pencil from the "Drawing" line of pencils.

I remember seeing this pencil and having it be reccomended it to me in this stationary shop in montreal. The owner said a lot of people go nuts over this pencil. Should've bought it when I had the chance. :/

Your AWSOME Rae!
Why don’t we have pencils like that anymore?!
Great video! The artwork is great! It is amazing how many talented artists there are on youtube.Keep creating videos. They are a great motivation for us small youtubers! Blessings
Ok idk why rae is my favorite youtuber I think because of her confident for her love for art 🖼 please start making more comic and ohuhu videos
I remember seeing this pencil and having it be reccomended it to me in this stationary shop in montreal. The owner said a lot of people go nuts over this pencil. Should've bought it when I had the chance. :/
Im just exited to get my copics tomorrow xD

Happy new year raeee!!!!!
I wanted to say that you are the person how motivated me to keep drawing and I just wanted to say a huuuge thank you for the inspiration you are
“This pencil wasn’t unlike anything the world had seen-“
Wait... so it HAS been seen before?
Rae: this pencil is so expensive
Also Rae: pushes the pencil against paper losing like a billion dollars
I have one I didn’t even know it was this special
You should make a video about you using your old art supplies from highschool
From my pov (someone who is rubbish at art but still tries) the center one of those pics is the more visually appealing
PS - Happy New Year
This video:
Rae being salty about a pencil for 10 minutes straight

I was just thinking when you upload video and after literally 10 min later this just happened.
6:15 Instead of “what pencil is it close too?” The sentence should say “What pencil is it close to?”. Just wanted to point out that little mistake but it doesn’t really matter.
