FYI... The Amazon Basics colors are identical to the Marco Raffine' 72 piece set. I have them both, and did a side by side color chart. Same numbers even. The only difference, besides their names, is that the Marco Raffine' pencils are oil-based, and the Amazon Basics set is wax based. I don't know if anyone else told you, and I wanted you to know. 🙂
I am genuinely confused by your comment. How are they identical if one is wax and the other is oil? They are two completely different mediums? Unless you just mean the shades themselves?
I hope Prismacolor will up their game and bring back quality control! I'm never buying another Prismacolor pencil until they fix the breakage issue....(I would never buy Amazon art supplies though).
I mean, prismacolor should be fine. They’re geared towards artists; a 3rd grader or someone who likes coloring books isn’t gonna be putting 50$ in the drain when there’s already cheaper stuff. And the artists who use prismas are most likely gonna stay with prismas (people who can’t afford it aren’t using them anyway) The amazon brand of pencils will mostly be bought by hobbyists and artists who don’t have enough for prismas, so as far as I can tell they’ll be okay. Really gotta work on their quality control tho
I use oil pastels more often and the pastel pencils I use are from Prisma. I don't have an issue with breakage but I also don't use a lot of pressure when I use them. Maybe that's why I'm not having that issue?
That's exactly that. And if you buy an Amazon print now you are paying pretty much what you'd pay for a decent book and get a flimsy thing on cheap paper, held together with the cheapest glue.
@@hiiluoclanatn Then you either have a large storage unit that I want to see on Storage Wars or huge house to contain all those bound and sliced dead trees with words written on them. Amazon does this a lot and it makes me sad. While I love the convenience of Amazon- they constantly steal ideas from small/medium sized businesses and make them into “Amazon basics” totally undersells it and then that original business ends up going under.
@@charisma-hornum-fries yep. A friend I know works there and I have it verified this is true. Oh they pay them well, but the tactics of this company are downright disgusting
Amazon did their version of the cult classic dill mustard sauce sold by the Larrupin Grill in Humboldt County, CA. That's one of the few fine dining restaurants in the county, and salmon is a big thing in the Pacific Northwest, so the restaurant owners adapted an old family recipe for Swedish dill mustard sauce to serve with their salmon. People wanted to buy the sauce, so they started bottling it, and you could get it on sandwiches, bagels, etc. as a regional specialty. WinCo is a regional employee-owned grocery store and I used to get it for $4 for a 10-oz jar. The restaurant, or their sauce bottler, also sold it online... for $13/jar. I guess enough people searched online for "Larrupin dill mustard sauce" that Amazon decided it was worth stealing the recipe or buying them out. For a while, you couldn't get Larrupin Sauce (it was IN THE NEWS up there!) and the family gave some kind of vague excuse about supply issues or something. Now I wonder if this was connected to the sudden appearance of Amazon Happy Belly Dill Mustard Sauce (for about $9/jar, same size/shape as the OG stuff)?
The thing about Amazon is that they'll beat out all the competition, and then once they're the only place you can go, watch the quality drop and the prices go up.
That's called predatory pricing, but it's difficult to find real examples of it. There's no guarantee of success with such a tactic, after all. You're guaranteed to lose money early on, and there's no reason to expect success after putting some other company out of business, because you can't prevent others from entering the market.
The one thing that prismacolor has that no other pencil company has, and can’t replicate, is their color range. They have the best color range of ANY colored pencil set.
Having people very close to me who worked for amazon for a lengthy period of time, they spoke of this extensively... literally all the amazon products (not always named amazon basics) are 100% sourced from pre-existing supply chains. They may direct them to cut costs (use a cheaper pigment option, cheaper wood, poly blend instead of cotton, etc.) but otherwise it is often made in the exact same factory/a factory owned by the same people, with the exact same materials/same material supply chain, before being packaged differently. So yes, the problem with this is what you pointed out... basically a cannibalization of every possible industry in order to control the supply. It costs money to hire product developers, packaging designers, product testing, etc. and they pass the savings that came from ripping off the design/formulation of a company's final product on to... well a little to you (just enough to get you to buy it, and not a penny more) but the rest to bezos. I'd pass on these--if for no other reason than feeling like part of my soul was dying having to look at 'amazon' on an art supply while I was using it... There is also the very legitimate fear that as he crushes existing companies and narrows down your options, that product innovation dies and they can then degrade the quality of the products they're offering once you're stuck with no other options. Which is scary and... gives me that uncomfortable feeling you mentioned... :')
YOu think any loser that would talk to you is a worthy source. You loser people think you are artists? You are nothing absolutely nothing in the big picture.
Pertaining to Alexis’ comment:: I had no idea this was going on. I guess I haven’t bought anything with the Amazon logo on it. I certainly have, however, bought things with the Great Value Wal Mart logo. Specifically, groceries. I had heard that these products are often produced in the same factories as the name brand product, thereby making it a more economical choice, while getting the same quality. In fact, you often see the products side by side on the shelf. I had no idea that the ultimate goal was to squeeze out the competition. But it makes sense. Perhaps I will think twice now, as my budget allows. Thank you to both of you for the insight.
@@People_R_Foolish LOL I had no idea someone was trying to troll, I'm sad youtube didn't let me know. Nobody was claiming to even be an artist dude, you're projecting a little too hard. It's okay if you're nothing in "the big picture", even if your art sucks, it's about what makes you happy (though I question if trying to leave mean comments is really making you happy.) In the unlikely event that someone is sincerely concerned about my "sources" (even though this is readily information available online and literal factory workers probably know this best of all), direct family member who was a level 7 and had meetings with our bald overlord himself regularly, and another direct family member who did factory compliance checks overseas. This is really hard because factory owners will go to great lengths to hide horrible conditions and make everything look above board, even if the goods are actually being produced at another location entirely. But regardless, internally Amazon is *proud* of this sort of thing. People working there either drink the koolaid or pretend to, but either way they think of cannibalizing other companies as an accomplishment.

I have completed my four week lightfast test! And I am here to say that amazon basics coloured pencils are not lightfast. Though they fade a lot less than I expected. It's like a 25-30% fading in the four weeks in my windowsill, so, now we know for certain.
Okay the initial story is actually pretty shocking to me... We have laws in Germany that forbid these practices, one if the reasons Walmart never stuck around here. It's horrifying, really
Yes, absolutely disgusting. We should be scared of amazon, because they will take over the whole online market if they're not stopped. There are many reasons to criticise Germany but sometimes I'm glad to live here.
I really don't care, I don't support Amazon's monopolizing the planet and power seeking strategy. Even if they were better than prisma I would buy prisma again tbh. I get that amazon basics are helpful for people who can't afford art supplies tho.
There's certainly a need to value your supplies through the whole chain. Finding companies who specialize in the supplies makes it more likely that there will be a broader range of products (color ranges, textural differences, etc.) and allows the companies to support employees who are specialized in curating those supplies not to mention ethically supplying them. Cheaper is just cheaper and that's basically it. It's not surprising that Amazon could replicate some of the quality of the actual product but there are shortcuts behind the scenes to make that happen.
One thing with companies like Amazon, they make cheaper knock-offs with okay quality because they already have the capital to produce, theyre just doing it to battle companies or brands that specializes on that specific product. Cuz theyre cheaper, consumers would go buy them and through time, sales and demand for other brands will go downhill and here comes Amazon to “rescue” them by buyin* their brand. Amazon has the upper hand since they’re Amazon.
@@multimanjazzman8203 With art supplies though I doubt everyone will just abandon ship with the brands they like and go to Amazon's. Different people like different qualities in different brands and Caran D'ache, Prismacolor and Derwent pencils will likely always be better than whatever Amazon puts out.
Love comparative videos like this, they are very helpful. So far, the price difference is so minuscule though that I'd rather pay the little bit extra for the better quality product and support those manufacturers instead of helping Bezos with his world domination plan that will ultimately wipe out the competition and deprive us all of the option of the better quality products.
Don’t think the owner of Amazon is nice to his workers because my mom used to work at Amazon and used to be payed almost nothing and now she is a small business gaining more money then she did from Amazon
Same here my mom and brother worked for them overworked and underpaid. Plus the facility was like 5 million square ft and if you work on the other side away from the break room it was to bad. My moms 30s were 10 min and her 15s were 5.
I remember my dad worked in Olive Garden as a chef and he barely got payed so he made a flooring company and he was the only one working to make the floors and he got enough money to buy an ACTUAL house and not a apartment
I would always rather support a 'good' art supply company than get something basic. And really, in these times, the power needs to be distributed. Even in the art supply companies.
@@ismaelsyed6449 No. It's called: having extremely bad morals and not caring about anyone but yourself. There are much healthier and friendlier forms of competition

@@crashq8784 I hardly agree. It's a game. A board a monopoly board that the company plays in. They will get rid off the competition and they will be the biggest online shop. They will rise the stocks and get more money.
My first guess is that they're actually Mitsubishi pencils. They are sold like crazy in Japan and are also really cheap and have still great quality. It also gives a really strange feeling seeing a car brand on a pencil :D
I'm with you on that. And I'm really glad she shared that story, because I didn't know of that! Dear Jeff Baalzebub-zos, nah, not playing your game. I've found many things where Amazon costs more . They rely on people thinking they're always less. But if you DO find a price on Prime that's less, most local stores will price-match. I don't have small places price-match, but will with Target and such.
Thanks 4 covering the Bezos topic. My Grandfather who was born in 1900 predicted and refused to shop at any potential chain stores because he was a wise man. I swear... Amazon better NOT mess with any other company. It's only getting out a hand, we have different companies and sites and stores to buy from for a reason. Imagine only on store everywhere you look. That just sounds like hell.
I’m trying not to give Lex Luther anymore of my money than possible. I can’t stand his desire to take over the world. I will pay more for my color pencils and stick with Prisma.
I will buy Polychromos from Dick Blick and Jet Pens and probably pay even more. I mean, I don't know where you buy your Prismas, and Dick Blick usually has great prices, but Polys usually cost more than Prismas. Whatever, it's less money for Jeff Bezos, so it's all good.
Nope! Worse, it's called Corporatism, which is spawned from unbalanced & unchecked capitalism! It's when a few companies are allowed to wipe out & destroy all other businesses, & run a monopoly without consequences! Bezos is being allowed to gain & control a monopoly! i know prismsacolor is also owned by a billion dollar company but i’d rather buy from them any day than give money to a man who is worth almost half of prismacolor’s parent company’s entire worth. no one needs that much money in my opinion
I hope I'm not the only one not interested in Amazon basics art supplies? Honestly i don't know how they are... They may be good or bad.... It's just a personal preference...
I’ve actually started finding items cheaper elsewhere online then on Amazon, I dunno why but certain products seem to be higher in price now then they used to. I’m guessing Amazon can make them higher then elsewhere because they offer next day free shipping
Just going off my own experiences there are cheap equally good alternatives that already exist. For instance: staedtler is a slightly cheaper alternative to faber castell and the two are so close to being identical (although I feel staedtler transfers much easier to paper whereas faber castell needs more layering and work). And I've heard of other brands in other mediums too
I appreciate your work on comparing these art supplies and I respect your opinion... HOWEVER, something in my gut just won't let me give Bezos any more money than I already do. I already buy most of my stuff from Amazon and Dick Blick's Art Supply, but I buy brands that are sooo not Amazon brands. It is unfortunate that Amazon has become so big because as you have said, it has pushed smaller companies out of business as with the diaper people! The free shipping that Amazon offers really makes a huge difference in most cases. Of course, don't forget that shipping costs are added in to the basic cost of the products in the case of heavy things like gallon jugs of alcohol or big glue bottles, etc. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth!
Indeed...and unreachable if u wanna unsubscribe from anything thru them!! Would neva buy their product ova original brand ie Prismacolour pencils.... on principle alone!!
I've had those pencils for nearly half a year thanks to this video, and I don't have any complaints. They are great pencils. I'm doing my own lightfast test and so far they're doing very nicely. I did upgrade to a caran d'ache luminance white pencil because the white pencil just didn't do it for me, but it's good if I need a blender. Otherwise I'm very happy since I've gotten it, they don't break when I sharpen them, they go over everything I use them on (watercolours, markers, poscas, even crayons if I use hairspray on top of it), and they are soft enough to blend but not so soft that I can't do details. These are great pencils for beginner artists to learn off of. I am considering upgrading to the polychromos at some point, but I still love these pencils

I’m unsure of that. Haven’t they had enough time to do that already?
They legally can’t do that because the government won’t allow monopolies (thank god).
That's called predatory pricing, but it's difficult to find real examples of it. There's no guarantee of success with such a tactic, after all. You're guaranteed to lose money early on, and there's no reason to expect success after putting some other company out of business, because you can't prevent others from entering the market.
@@rayofsunshine6300 The government's ability to enforce that has been pretty weak ever since Reagan.
that is exactly what walmart did, so, yup.
The one thing that prismacolor has that no other pencil company has, and can’t replicate, is their color range. They have the best color range of ANY colored pencil set.
I do have to say Holbein also has a 150 colour tange and is amazing.

It's okay if you're nothing in "the big picture", even if your art sucks, it's about what makes you happy (though I question if trying to leave mean comments is really making you happy.)
In the unlikely event that someone is sincerely concerned about my "sources" (even though this is readily information available online and literal factory workers probably know this best of all), direct family member who was a level 7 and had meetings with our bald overlord himself regularly, and another direct family member who did factory compliance checks overseas.

Me too! I've made it a point never to buy from Amazon. I'm fine sticking with Derwent!
Yess
@@mchobbit2951 They do break easily, which is why if you are going to use them, its best to use certain sharpeners and methods to make sure they don't shatter. My sister sharpens them with the Derwent hand-crank sharpener and she's never broken one. If she drops one, before sharpening or using it, she lightly melts the wax back together with a blow drier. It depends.
@@animelover-vj6qy I live in Europe so the issue is that they already break in transit. I had better luck with the Faber Castell and Derwent pencils.
@@mchobbit2951 like I said, experiences with Prismas vary from person to person. It depends. I like them, they work just fine for me and the other artists in my family, but ik other ppl have had problems with them (especially when they're delivered by Amazon as I've noticed). So if you found a brand that works better for you personally, that's great. I still wouldn't complete discourage others from using them tho. And I personally can't afford polychromos anyways, so...that's just my opinion.
Agreed
Twisted Transistor is my Korn song of choice when I'm doing art. 😎
I’m so conflicted because while I am super broke and would love to get my art supplies for cheaper, Amazon is so scummy some/most of the time that I don’t want to give them my money 😭 Amazon basics makes my heart happy but hurts my soul
Go ahead and buy the from Amazon.
Its OK....
I wont tell. 👍😜
Sign up for coupons from Micheal's and Joann's. They often have coupons that will take the price of Prisma down 40%-60%. You'll spend LESS getting actual Prismas that way.

I wouldn’t even buy Amazon colored pencils cuz I just want to keep prismacolor in business
I’m uncomfortable. Also I’m sticking to the name brands.
Love the Bezos/Lex Luther bit.
Had to watch this for entertainment. I’m primarily a digital artist, but I’m trying to get back into hand drawing. A lot of my art has to do with dismantling power structures… so I definitely couldn’t live with seeing Amazon on my art supplies. Since I’m not ready to sell my soul, I dropped $125 on a Prismacolor set. I know it will pay off in the end!
I love that you outed amazon on the diaper scandal.
These are the people who loveeeee her new background

@Isma Eman Dude, even if they were being a bit mean, you should never comment on someone's English. Are you like five or something? You should know this.

The blackest black thing was just petty. Amazon was being downright evil.
@@nightmarefanatic1819 true I’ll edit my comment :)
One reason I still wouldn’t buy the Amazon one
Friend: “that’s a cool drawing what did you use!”
Me: “Amazon colour pencils”
Friend: “ohhh... yeah those ones?”
You could say "Lex Luthor Basics".. sounds way more epic.
Jokes on you...I don't have any friends!
I honestly think they're marketed to a different population, like hobbyists as opposed to real artists.
@@sleekoduck I mean, I'm a hobbyist because I can't have art as a job (I don't have a bank account, and aside from that, I can't actually handle the pressure from commissions) and I wouldn't go anywhere near Amazon's art stuff... Sure, Faber Castell is more expensive, but they're a lot better. And if I bought from Amazon, I'd be paying 100€ shipping on most things.
For a moment, I was convinced diapers.com would turn out to be the sponsor
Rae, please don't support Amazon or knock offs! It's better to put that money to smaller companies, and people really listen to you. Amazon don't need the business but other art companies do :(
I agree, at first I liked this video but then realized she’s actually just supporting amazon especially with those affiliate links. 😑
Not to say it's okay what amazon does but prismacolor are not a small company. Personally, I'm a "starving artist " that saves a year to get a set of prismacolor pencils that break very easily. If I'm coloring for anxiety, these would be fine imo. I don't blame her for having an affiliation link, we all have to support ourselves and families.
It's called business. A lot of companies do this, not just amazon. It sucks, but for people who can't afford to pay an extra $20 it's not bad to have. She's just doing her job in showing the difference. If people can, or are willing to spend the extra $20 they can. This goes for any amazon basic, or knock off items. If it comes between buying food or buying "name brand" I think I would choose buying food and just buy the cheaper item if the difference in the item isn't that big of a deal. I see so many name brand items that get so expensive because of their name, not their products.
@@fidelianerina - That's not "business" anymore than breaking the leg of your skating competitor before the race is "sports". This isn't capitalism either, it's corporatism. Learn the difference. Business is meant to allow for competition. Monopolies are not competition, they're just "Corporate Raiders". They don't look to actually compete via innovation and quality, their job is to buy up the competition until their shitty company is the only one left standing. Usually that means losing alot of money first, in order to gain future consumers in the long-term. Gaming the market used to be illegal. There were anti-trust & anti-merger laws that prevented it. These laws were meant to protect small businesses & entrepreneurs from big conglomerates that had the capital to overtake them. But by the power of bribery and the Supreme Court ruling of "Citizens United", corporations had power over our legislation and could now dictate the rules & bend the laws to suit them. Jeff Besos & Bill Gates have tried to buy elections plenty of times. This is a threat to our democracy, and you're sitting there justifying this. They weakened anti-trust laws, then they slowly eradicated corporate & banking regulations. These mergers made these companies so big that in 2008, it led to a market collapse and one of the biggest recessions we've ever had since the Great Depression. It's sad that the current state of corporatism is being viewed by the public as "business as usual". It was never like this. Billionaires & huge monopolies are a very new thing to our society, bc we used to put ethics over dollars. Not anymore.
@@sallykitchen9378 , If Prismacolor would go back to the quality they had when I bought my first complete set (made in USA) I would still support them. Every replacement pencil from them has been sheer hell to work with since they started manufacturing in Mexico, I refuse to buy their pencils anymore due to the breakage, warped pencils and loose leads.
I just bought the same set of pencils. Haven’t used them yet. You’re right-the packaging is so pretty!
plz share your opinion about the amazon basic colour pencils ,
plz plzzzz
Hey Rae, something to consider about your review when you layered it might have been a good idea to tell people that if they layer they could use both. AB for the under layers and finish with a top layer of the PC therefore extending the life of the Prismacolors. Just a thought from an old artist in SD..
Oooo, good idea! Tyvm!
