IMO Johnny's insecurity is another reason why people think Valentine is the real Hero. Not only does Valentine's intense belief in himself make him seem righteous, but Johnny's lack of charisma and inability to explain his goals make us second-guess him. It's hard to have faith in a hero if the hero doesn't have it in himself.
The Fluff And also many people believe he did all that just to be able to walk again, but it’s more than that, he wanted to change and become a better person, by the end of SBR he wasn’t fighting Valentine so he could get his legs back, he was fighting him cause he knew such power couldn’t be trusted to someone like Valentine, Funny Valentine offered Johnny to bring back Gyro, which would change nothing, gyro is still dead, the presence of an alt Gyro would be only beneficial for Johnny since he misses him, but still he did what was right at the end

A paraplegic, some random italian guy, a guy(? and a dinosore want to stop the president from taking a napkin is quite possibly the best story ever told
"In the JoJo arc Steel Ball Run, the major villian is the deeply patriotic President Valentine, and from that perspective his stated goals may be more just-- in fact, I suspect his intentions line up with those of our real-world leaders. But he's willing to sacrifice powerless people to achieve just ends, and that part of his character is, to the minds of the protagonist and the reader, unquestionably and unforgivably evil. Because of this, the character of President Valentine could never be the protagonist. I think this also serves as a good example of a point I made earlier-- that readers wont empathize with a coward." -Hirohiko Araki (Manga in Theory and Practice)

Steel Ball Run's gonna be something else once DP gets to animating it Though I'm a bit worried on how they'll animate Horses, they're difficult to draw let alone animate
Im more worried for the 5-6 years for us to get a part that isnt considered mediocre at best. Dw when it comes the time dp wont make us sad they never do
Imagine you are a British man wandering the street at night after a nice drink with your friends. Suddenly, BOOM. You are killed by 7 gun shot wounds that flew down from the sky that fell from a misfired bullet who knows how far away. This is because someone tried to shoot another person in America, but the bullets would miss no matter what. This is what we see happen in the love train fight, people suddenly died due to the repulsion of bad things from the corpse, and people died without deserving it. The hate and sadness is'nt eradicated, its moved unjustly.
Love Train is a cruel ability, being protected at the mercy of another person's injury is not something cool and Funny Valentine doesn't even use it moderately, he literally spams it.
Yes, but other countries were likely planning on doing the exact same shit as Valetine. See Napoli and likely the international racers' respective countries
@@underscore2736 to a degree yes, but his motivation regarding to make America "take the first napkin" was so that the other countries wouldn't be able to subject the USA to Love Train (or whatever ability they believed the holy corpse would grant them) and instead flipping the script on them. It's comparable to knowing that another country plans on nuking you and preemptively nuking them first so that they are unable to. That's not evil in and of itself. Sure, it's not morally good either, but it is well intentioned and has the best interests of the citizens of the US at heart. It's not like the countries were going to negotiate over the corpse either since it's quite clear that they didn't want it going public. That being said, yes, Valentine is evil, not for his goal, but for how he attempts to achieve that goal. Hundreds of people didn't need to die for the US to get ahold of the holy corpse first, and there likely were better ways of going about this. He's evil in the same way Senator Armstrong from MGR is in that they honestly aren't too different from the protagonist when you consider that they have comparable methods. Johnny kills a ton of people in SBR for getting in his way and to achieve his goals, but after befriending and learning from Gyro, he becomes a better person despite his selfish goal. Valentine--in comparison--serves a more selfless goal (considering multiple versions of himself sacrifice themselves and pass on D4C to other consciousnesses), but he was a lot more unnecessarily ruthless than needed.
@@ratatouilledrinksclorax9897 Of course. I'm not saying they aren't similar cases, but I'm saying that Griffith is much more depicted as being an evil and traitorous bastard than Valentine is. Of course they're both evil, but Valentine does a much better job at hiding it, like what was discussed in the video
A magnificent analysis on why Valentine is such a good antagonist. It's obvious that his actions are vile and largely self-centered. He organizes the dangerous Steel Ball Run race, he basically rapes a fourteen-year-old, and he wants to use an ancient artifact to screw over the rest of the world. This is shown well in the Love Train arc, where the "misfortune" that is deflected by Love Train can be seen directly affecting other parts of the world at random. But the fact that the readers look past all that because of Valentine's radiant personality and ambition is what makes him so special. In my opinion, he's one of the best political villains in any form of media. The fact that Steel Ball Run in and of itself is propaganda in his favor is just incredible writing on Araki's part. That's just part of the reason why Part 7 will always be the best (I haven't read Part 8 yet so maybe I'm wrong). Great work, dude! In terms of the people who talk about JoJo, you're one of my favorites. Can't wait to see what you cover next!
"Self-centered" him bringing over alt diago if he failed largely proves this wrong. Everyone is selfish but his plans largely at the end had parts in place if he died and the fact funny died multiple times also disproves the selfish aspect. Would you die so a clone could live your life? That's funny by en large. People forget we aren't following the EXACT same funny thought jojo despite a shared stand

Pavees Fox i believe this is wrong, he was self centered but in a different way, Valentine doesn’t care about his life but only his goals, he did not bring back alt Diego for anyone else or any other person that himself and what he wanted to achieve
Thank you for making the Stinky Valentine section. With all of the annoying memes about Valentine being a hero the section was a blessing. While reading part 7 I thought of him as such a evil person until the end when we learned about his dad. Now I see him more as a human rather than a villain or a hero.
Same! I never really understood why FV was thought of so highly up until now. And I started thinking of him to be more humane at the end too, but all the same, I couldn't help but think that he is still too far gone in most things. As OP said, he often tries to justify what he's doing, but that only seems to me like he convinced himself that all the evil he's doing is in the name of patriotism and all his other beliefs, which just isn't right to me.

My favourite thing about Funny Valentine and Johnny is that their goal and methods are opposite. Funny has a Selfless goal but gets it in evil ways and Johnny has a selfish goal but gets in in good ways

Saethron Elf yes I agree he probably realised a fat antagonist would be silly. But still it makes sense that he could use d4c to get different valentines of different body shapes
I haven't seen this far yet, but I know JoJo's tend to be charismatic through strong conviction and confidence. Dio is very charming and even more intimidating. He puts the fear of God in you. Hol Horse is just a total Chad working as a car salesman for Dio
I recommend u don't watch these vids as they tend to spoil things. There's also multiple things that make valentine stand out and jojo parts 7 and 8, that is the fact jojo transitions into seinen (for adults) so the story gets quite deeper than usual and allows for even more brutal things and IT'S FUCKING GREAT.
I think his form of "patriotism" is actually nationalism. One can love their country, but it takes a darker turn when people are willing to harm others to prove their nations superior and knowingly hurt another country in the process.
Absolutely. Valentine's "patriotism" is a destructive force that he uses as a means of justifying abhorrent actions. It really is a terrifying nationalism. He's willing to discard the lives of those whom he deems lesser for the sake of preserving a nebulous abstract ideal of a country that doesn't actually exist.
@@LongSinceDead1 no. Nationalism is an extreme patriotism? Zealotry is an extreme form of nationalism An extreme of something, cannot be considered the same as the base thing
8:57- it also gives very strong implications that the original man that the corpse parts used to be/ did the opposite of Valentine’s goals actually took on the world’s misfortunes and gave the world fortune for the sake of others not himself because that’s a truly noble sacrifice in keeping with the themes of goodness in humanity.
What about that train conductor he trapped in the mirror by roping his dead alternate self to his back. There was no reason to do that. Same thing with killing the bee stung security guard.
its also very interesting that valentine and pucci have a lot of parallels. One of their greatest similarity is the whole "evil without knowing its evil" thing. While being so similar people say valentine did nothing wrong while stating that pucci is a monster. This idea strengthens your point that because araki made valentines strengths the focus, he appears charismatic. Valentine spouts how just he is every second while pucci feels hes above justifying himself to the joestars. ive also noticed that SO and Sbr out of all the parts might have the closest parallels regarding their themes. Since they are both about fatherhood and redemption. I would be interested in seeing a vid where you analyse fatherhood in different parts.
I feel like this is also why Marvel fans love Thanos so much: not only do his goals make sense (even though their wrong), he is also a well written charismatic psychopath. . . And don't even start with that "Thanos did nothing wrong" bullshit either. Evolution and thermodynamics debunks his kill-half-of-all-life plan. Life will always find a way to survive because resources/matter can never be fully "destroyed"
Not to mention that populations can double in like 30 years. What’s the long term plan? Snap every 30 years? Well that wouldn’t work out since he can’t use it again afterwards, apparently. He’s wrong - full stop. His “solution” would likely result in a faster growth rate and a much larger population in 40 or 50 years.
I really hope when they get to animate Part 7, DP is able to get the voice actor for Funny Valentine from ASB/EOH to voice him, the actor's voice was so excellent, really selling me how deceivingly self-rightious FV was, I fell in love the second I heard. I know he voice Kira in Part 4's adaptation but I hope they bring him back somehow.
The fact that so many people unironically think that Valentine did nothing wrong shows how good his character really is. The whole point of his character is that he's supposed to represent a real life politician who is a selfish and lying scumbag. I find it so funny when people fall for the propaganda surrounding him because it shows how well executed his character is.
I really enjoy your videos when you analyze a character psychologically, it's always very intersting to hear about that from someone he is actually good at this. I also like analyzing media very much, but as a literature major I see things a little differently when I try to analize them, so it's very refreshing to see your video~ Much love
Quick reminder tha Johnny gave away the corpse parts twice to save his friend, and he said he would like to bring everyone back that died during the race. Valentine didn't give two shits that his wife and family died
I'm way late on this video but I wanted to say that Hot Pants works as a great counterpoint to Valentine's brand of patriotism. She is also trying to collect the corpse for the sake of her country, but is truly noble in her intentions and ways of achieving that goal. The only difference is that Valentine is more charismatic while she is more straightforward in her approach and personality, showing how the more noble can be outshone by the less noble through charisma.
dude valentine is one of the best characters in all of anime and manga because he represents that one phrase "the greatest trick the devil ever played, was convincing the world he wasnt real"
Too many people misinterpret his character and it's honestly so hilarious to me. The amount of mental gymnastics you'd have to go through to believe he's the "good guy" is crazy.
If it makes you feel better, the Villains Wiki/Heroes Wiki community categorizes Funny Valentine as Near Pure Evil (aka just a couple redeeming qualities away from being a completely heinous monster whose every action is immoral and spreads unmatched evil)
Honestly, the Holy Corpse makes a lot more sense when you think of it as a metaphor for Imperialism, considering that the U.S. was absolutely in the mood to start with at the time (seeing as the annexation of Hawaii by the U.S. actually occured during the real 23rd president's administration, the Spanish American war was about to happen, and the 20th century was non-stop "America wins, but everyone else gets fucked"). Oh, and Valentine's father died during the Mexican-American war, arguably one of the biggest successes for the goal of Manifest Destiny, second only to the Napolenoic Wars with the Louisiana Purchase, but that was more an incidental consequence than a true ambition of the United States, and also one of the least just wars the U.S. has ever fought, which is *really* saying something.
That and the napkin speech for his true motivation for American Supremecy. His lust for power can not be quelled until America has ultimate power and the other geo-political powers are forced to follow America's lead. Similar to how many poorer nations are exploited for labor or other resources irl.
American imperialism is minuscule compared to Britain, the Dutch, France, Portugal, Japan, and Germany. Power exists regardless of your desire to take it, and only when America obtained it, did all these other countries fall in place out of fear and claim to be righteous.
He kind of knew what the corpse would do. There was a general belief that the corpse of holy person is needed for a civilization to exist and prosper. (as i remember Gyro was the one who mentions this, maybe)
really hate how Americans try to protect him lol, it's so pathetic, if Valentine wanted to help any other country, his stans would change their opinion instantly. what he tried to do is horrible.
It's incredible how Araki is able to make such likable characters out of such monsters, to the point where some readers are tricked into thinking that they might be good people.
It would result in a war. This is a body of Jesus Christ after all. Many people would be hurt and killed over it. Steel Ball Run race was made to prevent this.
He could search for the body in his spare time. D4C makes Valentine an army unto himself by being able to access his other universe counterparts. He wins the election campaign and starts learning how to actually govern whilst his copies go incognito and search America for the corpse parts. He could have good governing and the corpse part plan working at the same time.
The thing is in a sense he needs 'fated' individuals to find the parts, you know the whole 'stand users attract other stand users'. I think he was trying to find strong willed individuals for that. And the race to me looks like one of the best, with the lowest risk ways of doing that.
The race actually ended up benefiting the us economy in universe so it's not stupid to do a large scale event for bigger outcomes. That's literally success. Taking chances for payouts with reasonable assumptions
oxymoron and yet it did. So acting as though it’s an utterly foolish idea when he has a way to access alternate universes probably can make you know some things others don’t. I’m not saying Funny is a good person because SBR doesn’t have good people (mostly because there are no good people)
Funny Valentine is my favorite JoJo character! I love the Badass Politician trope! Characters like Funny Valentine, Mike Haggar, Vayne Solidor, Masayoshi Shido, Steven Armstrong, etc.
5:46 Gyro mentions that nations who have the corpses of saints would be able to last over 1000 years. While Valentine may not have known exactly how this prosperity would be accomplished, it would be safe to assume that he would know this information as well with his intelligence network.
Dio isn’t just “so sexy he attracts people to work for him”, charisma involves confidence in oneself as well, so that’s one of the reasons why he can get people to even kill for him
"Araki isn't political" Araki wrote an entire story about killing the president of the United States for taking imperialism to its ultimate conclusion: literally using the rest of the world as raw material for American prosperity no matter who it kills
I think what makes Valentine stand out is he's the only villain in the series, besides Pucci, who has an unselfish goal as an antagonist. Like you said, he publicly gives off an air of focus and confidence, but we as readers are privy to all his instances of being an unfeeling sociopath, an utterly irresponsible leader, a rapist, a cold-blooded murderer and a liar. But, because he feels so strongly that he is right, because pretty much anyone that fights against him has as much blood on their hands as he does and because he has an entire country on his side, he almost seems just in his actions. He is the perfect representation of American jingoism and Machiavellianism. He's not an immortal vampire or a serial killer, he's a real person who was gifted with supernatural power. That's what makes him scarily real.
Valentine was a soldier tho, so it’s only natural that he would be cold & hardened. The whole point of his goal is too make America the most powerful country on Earth, putting other countries at risk, he’s the president so I doubt he would care about the well-being of other countries. Patriotism was huge back then so it’s only natural he, and every-one around him would feel the way he does. I’m sure he wouldn’t attack another country just for fun. I think he would use the corpse too defend the country. BUT an OVA of Vanlentine in the Army with D4C would be crazy good ....

Reading steel ball run I never really was on Valentines side until the very end. His final speech is so phenomenal at making the reader genuinely not just think, but want the president to be true to his words. I genuinely didn’t want him to pick up the gun and a part of me was convinced he wouldn’t. When he didn’t it I wasn’t shocked because I knew he was a villain, but it was more saddening.
Oh man for second I was thinking about certain emperor who started a war on misinformation and her league of stans who say her critics are the stans who lack critical thinking skills.
Ultimately, I view Valentine as an interesting question on your morality. While is can just be said that Love Train is merely a weapon against all who don’t receive its benefits, it can be argued that there’s probably a way to use Love Train in a way that will not make it so dangerous, e.g.: Purple Haze Feedback, and how Fugo learns to use the virus to kill a different strain of the virus, as a sort of antidote. Alright, now let’s say your in a group, and your leader is an awful person. They’re only leading you for the ego boost it will give them. They take very risky moves that could very much end badly. But... Nothing bad happens. All the gambles they make pay off, and the fact that they’re only in it for the ego boost, doesn’t really make a difference. This man is a piece of sh*t in his personal life, but when it comes to being a leader, he seems to only be capable of making good calls, at least when it really matters. Do you follow this person? They are pure scum. They would never follow the ideals they preach. But they’re a net benefit to you and your group. What would you do?
No, I think the idea is eventually Valentine's recklessness will cause him to either go mad with power or fuck up and get everybody killed/screwed over, regardless of how lucky his poor decisions seem to be. I would much rather a competent leader who is stable and makes decisions that don't work out perfectly sometimes but ultimately cares about his country as opposed to an incredibly lucky yee-yee-ass egomaniac.
As for evidence of that, look at everyone valentine recruited to do shit for him. Diego, all his bodyguards, the whole Steel Ball Run race and all the casualties in general. They all met a pretty shitty end, due to either Valentine's actions themselves or circumstances he put them in as a result of following him.
I meam in just terms of pure morality there is something to be said for putting aside personal differences and beliefs and distain for greater long term achievement, but there really is only so far that benifit could go before following that person is straight up making you sell any shred of common decency you have and you're just as bad as them if not worse through enabling them for your and your people's benifit. Even if its for the sake of someone besides you, selfish, irresponsible behavior is selfish irresponsible behavior. Now if we bring common logic into it, its literally only a matter of time before that person fucks you over or crosses a line big time with their actions one way or another.
I think I would sit down at a table Put some napkins to our left and some to our right , you know ? Then I would take a deep breath, look that leader square in the eyes..... And take the first napkin !
Valentine makes much more sense as a charismatic person, dio’s charisma is basically magic. Seriously, how can Dio be considered charismatic when he’s constantly babbling about nonesense and wrying at the top of his lungs.
5:45 From what i understood, the power hed get from the corpse aka taking the napkin isnt a supernatural ability thatd be given to him instead, its the sole fact that the holder of the saints corpse would have leverage over every other nation. you control religion -> you control people and what beats having the body of Jesus Christ in your own soil??
I know you mentioned his father in a previous video and how he was shaped by his death, but would you consider exploring his past as a soldier too? The fact that he, at the youngest, would have been 14 when he joined the Civil War, must have furthered his ideals of patriotism and his own self-confidence - plus the fact he received the corpse at this time, this shaped him probably as much as his idealistic vision of his father did.
How come I only found your channel today? Also, dammmnn your analysis on Diavlo is fantastic. All those saying he has no depth simply weren't looking for it, especially thematically.
It definitely helps to know that in Eyes of Heaven he did go against DIO and his motives were very pure in that situation. So is he a nasty villain, of course but he can do good things, definitely.
He is a parody of American politicians and it is strange that most fans that say that he is the good guy are from USA ? We live on planet Earth so better get the meme as there is not one country on this planet.

This is why he is my favourite jojo, bc he goes from not knowing himself to having a strong philosophy on life and having a true resolve to do what’s right, especially in the jojo lion flashbacks. He sure gets back to zero, and then goes beyond into infinity

But he's willing to sacrifice powerless people to achieve just ends, and that part of his character is, to the minds of the protagonist and the reader, unquestionably and unforgivably evil.
@@Kerrisive That doesn't excuse the deaths of hundreds of innocent people, evil government or not
@@underscore2736 to a degree yes, but his motivation regarding to make America "take the first napkin" was so that the other countries wouldn't be able to subject the USA to Love Train (or whatever ability they believed the holy corpse would grant them) and instead flipping the script on them.

This is dead on accurate that is not even funny. Both great antagonists tho
And I started thinking of him to be more humane at the end too, but all the same, I couldn't help but think that he is still too far gone in most things.

Less risky and less expensive.
It would result in a war. This is a body of Jesus Christ after all. Many people would be hurt and killed over it. Steel Ball Run race was made to prevent this.
He could search for the body in his spare time. D4C makes Valentine an army unto himself by being able to access his other universe counterparts.
Funny valentine the original and successful Donald Trump
Successful? Ehhhhh...
He's more of a hitler than a trump
The dude is insanely smart for a "selfless" person
@@rattila5858 He is very very ignorant but he convinced an entire nation the same stupid shit he believed in even though it was kinda through other people or so, but still. And he delivers the most convincing speeches in the most powerful manner mixing truth and propaganda. And german technology because sekai ichi during his time and Valentine kinda wants America to be on the top of pretty much everything.
The dude knew what to do and what not to do until Russia. In those aspect Valentine and hitler are pretty similar.
Trump and valentine doesn't have that much of a connection in my eyes.
@@rattila5858
You call it stupid table talk because you have the power of hindsight. There are big reasons why his strategy worked so well. Right place, right time and all that.
Eeeehhhh... Trump doesn't really have much charisma. He's just kind of a jerk, personality wise. I say this as someone who voted for him.
I just came off a video of JOJO and you drop this
*Coincidence*
*I THINK NOT!*
All this, just to shoot a cripple. Truly the most evil of the Jojo villains.
So, Funny Valentine is also a satirical representation of politicians?
Pretty much.
This video is a 9/10 needs more Funny Valentine
What is Valentine?
I'll do you a better one: 9:16
It really hitted me how much I belived in Valentine's integrity when he offered to bring back Gyro... I was crying on the floor and at that moment every part of me wanted that offer to be true... even if some part of me knew it wasn't...
Dio- Vampire
Kars- God
DIO- Stops Time
Kira- Bombs
Diavolo- Erases time
Pucci- Takes Stands
Valentine- *Racism*
Oh man for second I was thinking about certain emperor who started a war on misinformation and her league of stans who say her critics are the stans who lack critical thinking skills.
Valentine is charismatic but we can’t forget he has ordered Filthy Acts Performed at a Reasonable Price
when you writing character so good that his charisma affect ppl outside manga
That's a very interesting question. I'd have to say that even if they do benefit the group, if I can't agree or vouch for what they do, then no.
I think I would sit down at a table
Put some napkins to our left and some to our right , you know ?
Then I would take a deep breath, look that leader square in the eyes.....
And take the first napkin !
lmao i just heard about jelloapocalypses tweet about u, and now i subbed . keep up the good work u legend. i loved the vid :)
This could also be applied to the writing of Light Yagami
Pursuing a weapon of mass destruction without knowing what it will do? I see no issues in that. :)
Valentine makes much more sense as a charismatic person, dio’s charisma is basically magic. Seriously, how can Dio be considered charismatic when he’s constantly babbling about nonesense and wrying at the top of his lungs.
dio was much more convincingly charismatic in part 1, i was genuinely able to believe and feel in how he turned everyone against best boy jonathan
That’s the appeal though
5:45 From what i understood, the power hed get from the corpse aka taking the napkin isnt a supernatural ability thatd be given to him
instead, its the sole fact that the holder of the saints corpse would have leverage over every other nation. you control religion -> you control people
and what beats having the body of Jesus Christ in your own soil??
"stinky valentine" I am going to hurt you with my little hands
He is a parody of American politicians and it is strange that most fans that say that he is the good guy are from USA ? We live on planet Earth so better get the meme as there is not one country on this planet.
5:21 I just love that you decided to do a scene, that to in which it’s purpose is to completely tear down Funny Valentine’s character from the best villain of JOJO’s Bizarre Adventure to the stupidest villain in all of JOJO’s Bizarre Adventure and you also talk about how his actions make no sense and don’t contribute to his actual ultimate goal.
I'm going yo build a wall!
OF PSYCHIC ENERGY!!!
Valentine is the lawful evil paliden who the universe gave a natural 20 to strength and charisma
its honestly amazing how FV managed to convince a lot of the fanbase that he is not bad.
This is the best analysis video on Jojo I've seen. It does such a good job of describing what makes Funny Valentine an excellent villain.
The best villains are always the ones who think they are doing the right thing. It makes them more complex that the just doing it to be evil thing. Jojo has some of the best villain written.
Wait Valentine wants to get the corpse of Jesus and his stand is a bunny. What do both of those things have in common. Easter, they are both the symbol of Easter. It all makes sense now.
Maybe only hyper-patriotic american readers found him admirable, he was a thoroughly villainous, duplicitous bastard through the whole story for me.
I agree. I can't see how people think he is a good guy.
nope, i aint american and I loved him
