I think I see what the issue was last wipe.
The armor didn't really do anything if you think about it.
Because it was solely connected to your characters health pool.
Now that the armor is separate from the body per game coding, bullets are absolute on armor damage but penetration is the only calculated factor for body- UNLESS bypassing armor ofc.
This is probably the way the game was supposed to "feel", just a thought.
Cranking out the excellent content, new mechanics, changed traders and weapons. No one else is putting out such high quality content so quickly.

@@neonblack211If the bullet doesn't go through the plate or bend it, the force gets distributed pretty much equally over the whole plate, so the perceived impact on the body is not nearly as hard as you would think.
I hope they implement armor attachments, because some of the armors we have now have attachment points for shoulders, crotch, neck and have real life zip on or clip on protection.
They are planning to release it iirc
Thank you for all the hard work you do for us! You have been the single most helpful CC i have ever watched. Lots of love from scotland!
Ok the fact that u can swap front with back is actually huge. I guess steel plate not having blunt dmg make it really strong
It’s funny since Irl, ceramic is preferred. Steel causes spalling, each bullet that hits it can send shrapnel into your limbs and neck. I bet there will be a spalling mechanic in the future.
sure. but u take - for movement speed and all that. Aaah compromises. just like irl XD
but it does make me happy not have to scav 3 raids in order to find a plate that fits the front of the armor.
@AppliedGats Ceramic also has spalling tho
@@artu3529he never said it didn’t. Steel just spalls much more than ceramic
@@AppliedGats I agree but there's also another factor that comes in place with steel plates, usually they're carried with another package of soft armor layer that's meant specifically to catch the fragments of the bullet when it spalls, there's a huge difference between having one and not. In the game I'd say the majority has the built-in layer so it shouldn't matter in those armors, although as we've seen there are armors that have only the dedicated plates and they should definitely catch fragments, I think it should be added but only having that in mind. Cheers and have a great new year.
New armor change, so far, has been awesome. I feel like TTK has been lengthened, by a few seconds, which makes a HUGE difference. I've killed so many PMCs this wipe when last wipe I would've died. This change, with the new recoil, is making this my best wipe ever. I am loving it.
Thanks for the amazing content! Keep up the great work!!
It can either be longer, or way shorter depending on where is being hit.
Its great.
But, high level neckbeards will have access to ammo that will go through class 3-4 armour like butter, meanwhile my fmj/PS rounds will do nothing against the class 5 they can buy from level 4 traders.
Guess i'll just stop playing when people like that are running around.
@@Red_Lion2000 play single player tarkov, its way more fun
Off topic on the video, but the new recoil system is amazing. Shooting guns actually feels like shooting guns in other FPS games now and I love it.

@@tinychamberz Yeah dawg, skill plays MUCH more of a factor now.

i disagree in a way cause 7.62 weapons should kick more, especially guns like svt / pkp pecheneg / rpd etc and everyone now are spraying full auto like guy from TREX arms who's shooting whole wagon of munition every week, I could enjoy that no recoil more with old armor system cause this one is broken when I have class 4 plate and im getting 1 tapped in thorax with 7.62x39 HP round :D I feel like hitboxes and armor are not working properly all the time, they wanted to add more realism but they didn't balance that good cause of in my humble opinion too many new hitboxes especially the throat and armpit, cause irl people dont aim for the head but in game they do so they should rebalance that a lil bit in my opinion also AI are t-800 terminators with super unrealistic behaviour, even in other games with almost no recoil like cod etc they somehow managed to balance it good so its still easy to hit headshots if your aim and reflexes are good
The one thing I want is a plate x ray when inspecting armor so I can see exactly where I'm protected by t4 and like t2 armor
Yes that would be really cool, I'm not sure what the difference between right side and right plate is

If you`re doing anything gun related - notice how things shoot low eg 5-20m if you aim for helmet and enemy is facing you, you will head eyes, if you aim slightly above helmet, only than you will hit the helmet
height over bore, the bullet comes out the barrel, the sights a few inches higher than the barrel. it takes some distance (whatever your zeroed for) for the bullets trajectory to actually be on the sight itself.
sadly it translates into either dumping a mag into a enemy and him still living or 2 taping someone with a tier 6 armor
What I'd like now is to be able to buy armor without any plates in. One could do a sleeper build where they buy cheap armor but use expensive plates in order to get it back on insurance.
Then people will start looting plates only
@@EC-hf8ui I see nothing wrong with that. I don't think people would really check, plus plates take up a lot of space
@@EC-hf8uiplates take so much space that you might aswell take the whole armor so you can have both plates if there are 2
@@boggybolt6782 doubt it i always check mags for good ammo. no reason people won't do the same for plates
Such a well done content! Great work. Wanted to add that one raid I was on Wood, had only one leg remaining, but still took 1 shot or 2 which got me fleeing from the enemy. The plates are really doing their work
Good stuff! Thanks for testing all the new stuff so diligently!
I had a time like what you described with the 9x19 against the propane barter on factory once - dumped all 31 rounds of my Kedr right into some guy's UNTAR and then promptly got blasted :)
I think about it this way, as a soft lead slug passes through a steel plate it's going to pull and deform both itself and the plate. Massive energy transfer. Slow bullet by the time it hits you. If you have a tungsten core bullet passing through a ceramic or polymer there's going to be significantly less force transfer. And I feel like that's the case with the new damage reduction via plates. I think it's mostly about the materials involved in both the bullet and the plate.
This was a really enlightening video.
Maybe the percentage of damage reduced by a penned plate depends on the level and materials of the plate? Definitely seems worth looking into.
4:55 so this is sort of like how the game was back when i first joined, you could for example wear a TACTEC rig in your rig slot AND also still wear something like a Slick or Trooper underneath in your armor slot. Of course back then that shit was OP AF for obvious reasons, but this KINDA works in the same way just not to such an extreme. NGL, i kinda like it.
I love the new armor system. Hollow point rounds have a huge niche now, because even if two rounds get blocked by armor a third into the side is often enough to take them down.
This is actually such a well thought out and impressively programmed system
Thanks for the coverage, some enlightening information
I wish we could see where exactly the hitboxes are covered, that is something I've personally been very curious of.
You can see pretty will the outlines of the plate carrier themselves.
You just look at the shape of the plate. That’s the hit box. I open a tab of just the plate and open a tab of the rig and make them both face forward and that way you can line it up and get a pretty good estimate of exactly where in your plate carrier is protected by your plates.
Brother. Plates focus center mass protection mostly. Spalling will be more prominent to vests if chipping the edges of the plate rather than center
spalling is not modeled @@acidpoptart4270
You think you'll do a video showcasing the actual edges of the armor hitboxes? Would be cool to know how effective aiming at the armpit or side from the front would be. Might make a lot more low pen rounds viable if it's even somewhat consistent.
Maybe although most of the time you can see it on the armour directly
@Gigabeef I haven't played this patch as I decided to take a break a couple wipes ago. So I'm out of the loop as to how accurate the hitboxes truly are. If the positivity around this wipe keeps up, I may just get back into it.
@@thomasstewart1380 when I tested it offline with a friend, the armors we tested were suprisingly accurate to what you see, ie a shot on the edge of the armor but off the body would do damage to the armor but not the player. The shoulder straps were lvl 2 and actually worked, same with the sides. Unless theres an outlier Id say what you see is what you get. Be curious to try all the other armors out, but we tested the paca and the 6b13.
@@Kerosian1 so hollow point may actually be worth a damn with decent aim finally. Sick.
@@Gigabeef Wouldn't quite say that, especially for the backer on some armors not actually going out anywhere near as far as the armor visually goes (plate/backer combo armor like the 6B13 Assault) Where there is easily like 2 inches on the top right/left where you can not only dodge hitting the plate but the entire backer as well, which goes over the shoulder and down seemingly the ENTIRE back as well, meaning your paying heavily in both weight and penalties for like 4 inch wide protection across the front and back with a similar 4 inch area (2 inches per side nearly) which are doing absolutely nothing against even a tiny makarov round.
We are now in a state where Igolnik is not a flex round but a useful round if you mag pack it correctly with other penetration types.
I was running some Igolnik spread through BP and BT to great effect the other day, the reduced recoil from separating the high pen bullets between lower pen tracers and penetrators really shows in full auto spray downs and Igolnik definitely cuts through plates with enough juice to cut through the soft armor or at least damage it.
Damage to armor is also important now, before it didn't matter if you could two shot defeat thorax armor because the player usually died before that meant anything. But now you can ruin armor before you kill a player, so armor damage has a lot of meaning, low damage means you'll take longer to get in through those plates.
Great work testing all this. What really surprised me though is: there's snow on Customs? That's so cool!
Very good video! Ty Gigabeef ❤
5:34 so this is the biggest concept in modern armor. If anything makes it through a ceramic plate, your Kevlar behind it might save you.
They say supposedly the very best thing you can get is a Steel body armor plate surrounded in flexible Kevlar. That way the bullet spalling is caught in the Kevlar, but if you get hit in metal plates withOUT Kevlar or rubber backing the spall (the bullet essentially exploding when it makes contact and turning into fragmentation) will kill you.
How tf wasn't I subscribed already? Every time some new Gigabeef beef comes out it gets watched, I probably got the algorithm used to it!

Seriously ? I’ve been literally no lifing and after almost 150 raids my 13 or so deaths have been instant
Neck shots between this new hitbox and armor plus recoil changes have made gunfights nowhere near as long as before

best tarkov content creator for actual testing and current info, thanks mate!
Thanks for the vid. As a bonus, I have a New Years drinking game - I take a shot every time you say 'ie.' :)
I'm liking the idea of taking a lot more bullets and everyone having better control of their weapons. Could be a fun combination this wipe
It also is realistic. Shot placement matters.
Now, if I can load my mags properly, ie 1AP, 1JHP/HP without being slower than loading my mags in real life, I might be coming back.
But please no more RPG elements like a new weapon charm reducing recoil by twenty percent. And "PMCs" need be able to fire their weapons without an AR having the recoil of a 30-06.
You will be taking less bullets because you’ll get shot in a shitty non armored spot lol
Don't know if you know, but they've added Mag presets that you can play around with now, making it a whole lot easier! @@AllisterCaine
miss the old system
This wipe has rejuvenated my love for tarkov. First wipe in a while I’ve wanted to play past level 15
I always loved the fact that the avs protects my pmc’s balls. Now it’s a real thing. Thanks Nikita!
awesome work gentlemen thank you for the hard work! if this is the same system they are using in arena then low pen rounds like 9mm with 8 pen and lower are really never going to hit through much. watched a buddy spam a whole 30+ rounds he didnt miss any into the back of a guy with an altyn and it didnt even faze him so my guess is that nape hit box is covered. just my rant
I noticed that in my own testing with friends that plates if shot in the same place 2-5 times depending on material and ammo the bullets will start going straight through while being stopped my the same plate on a different corner of the plate
Something that is happening to me is that even when facing enemies in combat, my back plate gets damaged more than any other piece for some ominous reason.
Dude looks like Linus Tech Tips.
Oh yeah. sick video dude, this makes much more sense seeing it like this!
The damage reduction might have something to do with bullet velocity and mass, if a slow bullet gets trough armor it will lose a lot of its potential kinetic energy making it lose a lot of its damage, and vice versa, just a theory, so you can test it out
You are killing it lately beef, great vids.
Thanks for the vid Giga!!! This patch is such a win for the game; the armor feels great right now!
Happy new year Beef! Awesome video exactly what i was looking for!!
You are a king of Timmies and Senior Timmies. Teaching us how to play this game! thank you!
Can't wait for SPT to update.
Meanwhile I’m getting 1 tapped thorax by 9mm through mmac rig
Wow the tile wasn’t actually clickbait. Didn’t expect that
Ahhh, this is why my throax shots on some scavs with good armor appears to do zero damage and requires me to mag dump (and hopefully hitting the head) to kill them. Between arms and the armor soaking up the low pen rounds it means scavs (and PMC's as well I'm sure) can eat a ton of rounds and sometimes not die.... throwing in misses as well.
was playing GZ the other day and got hit in the vest by a scav. you can imagine how confused I was when i tried to heal and it showed 0 damage to the body! Im really liking what they did with armor and recoil. Now there is an emphasis on shot placement rather than farming AP.
I liked when armor magically protected your sides as well, now I get killed by timmies in armpits
Just theorizing but maybe the blunt-dmg of the hard plates gets applied to the softarmor afterwards and since bluntdmg probably has no pen or durability-dmg no amount of actual hitpoint-dmg reaches the Pmc.
no blunt damage does make sense since the plate has a soft nice backing so it would really dampen the blow
Hard plates should still give some blunt damage if a round does not pen but severely damages the plate, since you can still be injured by the backface deformation from higher power rifle rounds.
Thank you so much for these videos that are the only way I can understand these things
This double armor system is most likely because thats how a lot of issued gear and some armor systems out there work. Soft armor backers ICW (a.k.a in conjunction with) hard plates is a frequently worn system in MIL/LE. Pretty cool they’ve implemented that into the game. Could save your life having that soft armor. A round penetrating the hard armor will most likely go through your soft armor pretty easily at close ranges. But you extend those ranges and that bullet loses a lot of its velocity and youll see many more stopped rounds.
I had several cases of fragmented ammo, which before 0.14 wasn't the case this often.
I love this sort of autistic attention to detail from a game. Now if only we had this in a game that wasn't an extraction shooter.
Pretty cool how you now can make your ghzel combined materials rather than ceramic.
So here's a fun thing to remember, check your protection areas. I got 1 shot by a scav with a lead slug because my plates on my back only cover lower back.
Awesome video, great information to have when customizing kits. Quick question, while testing did you notice whether or not the bullet fragmentation bug is still in the game?
We didn't see any fragments on thorax, so I guess PMCs still can't fragment on PMC's thoraxes?
the wipe would be fire without the armor hitbox system
This makes much more sense now. I got into a fight with a pmc and he hit me 4 times with low pen 9x19 and I took no damage but my armor did, I was confused about not having to heal immediately after lmao.
Thaaaaaaaanks man for ur work , so helpful
Just yesterday I had a fight with a PMC in 6b23-1 I had an MP5 and I didn't understood how he tanked a completey 30 rounder mag. Now I know :D
Strange... I always take head, eyes against players with MP5/PP-19-01. That's why I wear Kiver-M with faceshield in early wipe.
@@rinaldoman3331 I think I'm not adjusted yet to the new recoil and somehow I still pull lower than need to thats why I lend a lot of body shots.
Always pleased with your informative and factual analysis in your videos Giga! Thank you for such excellent content as always!
the differing values for the damage reduction actually makes total sense. 7.62x39 PS is a big heavy round, going quite slow, so is very much less effective after going through armour, whereas the M80 7.62x51 is going very fast, and very few plates are rated to stop it IRL. Speed is generally how you defeat body armour IRL, hence why most militaries use smaller calibre weapons (5.56 or 5.45 typically, or 6.8mm now!) with full size casings. id wager that the speed of the bullet is now what determines the damage reduction after penetrating the plates! id be interested to know how that works with calibres like 9x39 ect that essentially brute force their way through with mass/hard penetrators ect, though, and whether the speed drop off over distance makes a difference.
This patch has has been great for military/gun nerds like me. mostly killing all the weird gripes i had about the how unrealistic all the different ammo acted. well done BSG, a lot of though has gone into this.
My guess is that they may try to add steel armor spalling in the future when the plate durability drops below certain threshold in the future, which is what happen when the anti spall coating of steel plates come off after tanking abuses, so no damage to thorax, but damage spalls toward head, neck and arms
I am curios if they be able to calculate that. It takes only a little fast piece of spall to cut your carotid artery. Either they model everything that is left of the bullet or they apply a simple 2% chance of applying critical bleed that kills you in 15 seconds.
That isn’t spall, that is fragmentation. Spall is the back face of the material being shot blowing out and becoming projectiles themselves.
@@AllisterCaine Why would they add that with spalling? Getting shot in your main leg artery would bleed you out too.
@@TwixSvK they went from vest hit boxes covering your whole upper body to accurate plate mechanics. OP said that in some cases you have the problem of bullets fragmenting and being caught by other body parts when the place or plate carrier isn't lined.
This would fit the idea and would make EFT the "realistic" shooter it was always propagated as, instead of the action RPG it actually is.
It always bugged my that soft body armor like paca would lose its function against soft point bullets or fmj pistol ammo which is BS.
Ceramic composite plates take some shots and crumble, they lose effectiveness.
But soft body armor losing effectiveness is like "shoot that tiger tank from the front often enough with your rifle and it will explode".
I am coming from an tank gaming background so realistic armor properties are important. Usuly it is Pen or non pen, maybe unsuccessful pen with spall damage to inhabitants.
@@apersonontheinternet8006 both are spall
I had two guys on Ground Zero magdump 9x18 into my gen 4 just for it to bounce off harmlessly 😂 they were inches from me, in the Terragroup parking garage
really good video, keen to see more of this on armor and understand how I can swap plates around and maximise my armor protection for minimum cost. Level 6 plates in level 2 armor?!
Perhaps different materials reduce damage more than others? Cyre plates are combined materials compared to armor steel plates of the 6b13 (I think this might be a mistake as I think the plates are supposed to be ceramic).
I think it depends which 6b13 model
there's a few variants of steel or titanium plates
Would it be a smart idea to have multiple different plates like a class 5 at the front and 3 in the back?
This balances the recoil overhaul very well too.
I would love to see if they added it back were you could wear soft armor under rigs with only plates.
i also have noticed that skavs even without armor tank like tagilla from time to time xD
I wonder how the time to kill is now with better recoil and holes in armor
Great explanation of the new system thanks ❤
This explains why I was dying to PMCs even tho i unloaded 20-30 bullets in their chest Its really hard to kill someone with shots straight to the chest.
Would love to see a video taking a look at helmets this wipe. Ricochet chance seems to be removed from all helmets, curious as to whether this is now a hidden stat or if the way damage/pen is calculated on helmets is changed as well.
Yes good idea!
Holy sh!t that new way the plates dont take blunt and durability doesnt change anything is huge
It changes quite a bit
I ran into a guy yesterday who emptied his little MP5 20rnd into my chest. Except for a couple rounds hitting my arm, my IV plate with III soft backing tanked it all. Poor guy was using the green tip 9mm.
Good vid. Was wondering why armoire never seemed to be getting damaged.
this is the best change bsg has made. armors i wouldn’t even bat an eye for previously are now viable. this is great
It would be interesting if they added trauma pads for plate carrier only armor. That's how blunt damage is mitigated IRL.
Lower rated rounds being reduced more and higher rated rounds being reduced less.
This is exactly how it works in real life. When a bullet is moving fast enough with enough pen (usually through a hardened tip), it actually doesnt matter what the resistance of the material it hits is, it's GOING through and it's not going to lose a whole lot more energy just because the target it hit had higher "resistance". It has to do with the physics of matter reacting to intense pressure in very small periods of time where very solid objects begin behaving similar to fluids.
Basically as you step up the "pen" scoreyou dont have a straight line of reducing resistance, but an inverse exponential one where it suddenly drops off.
Fantastic stuff my man
Have you tested the various different type of composition that plate armour consist of in Tarkov, you got Armored Steel, Ceramic, UHMWPE, Titanium, Aluminium etc and how it affect damage reduction on penetration, and durability?
