Not enough credit is given to the English “pre AR15” designs which included, straight stock, smaller caliber, locking bolt, gas operated. The English gave up on the development on US insistence for 7.62 x 51 as the NATO standard. But, give him his due, Stoner saw the potential and was a design genius.
It took an "AK Guy" to finally explain to me how the friggin' gas rings come into play on this gun. Never understood that. Never knew there was a port through the gas key. Thanks Brandon. These WBOK videos are great.
@@dbmail545 What are you talking about? Being able to own the gun doesn't bestow knowledge on a person. I can own a car. I know dick-all about how most of it actually works.
The AR was completely perfect, in every way, until they stopped using gun cotton (which had zero residue in the receiver) to ball powder (which gunks things up) and thus... Is the very reason Eugene stoner didn't want to sign off on the military version of the m platform.
When you consider that the military was coming from bolt guns, and the M1 Garand, it makes sense though. With either of those, if the round jams, you slap the bolt and ram it into battery and keep going. Originally the AR didn't have any way to force home a round that wouldn't go, but the military made Stoner put the malfunction exacerbator on the AR 15.
@@kuuryotwo5153 actually, no. SOP was to check to see if a round was chambered before action. With a non-reciprocating charging handle, some West Point graduate thought this would be useful. It is, despite being the source of so many other problems.
@@DD-hz3ts the attached charging handle can open and close a bolt... so you are halfway there on fixing problems. All the forward assist can do is force home problems
@@kuuryotwo5153 I get where you come from, but in that case they could have opted for an upper receiver with a side mounted charging handle or an AR-10 style charging handle. The forward assist is only there to ram it home which you don't want to do when your round won't chamber.
When a legion of brandons and Loki's come back from the void maybe it will Mandela our time line back to freedom. Patton was right. Should have given him his 400 thousand gallons.
Something that nobody talks about especially when calling an AR-15 depiction in a video game “realistic as hell” is the noise the spring makes when you fire.
I once had a former armorer explain it to me like this: An AR rifle (M16 M4 whatever) is great for a military with a quartermaster and armorer to take care of the weapons for the soldiers and is an excellent battle rifle The AK pattern is simply put an indestructible block of metal that makes smaller chunks of metal go very fast which makes it ideal for militia forces or units that receive minimal training or support. Which complies well with Soviet doctrine. While on a deployment he said that he witnessed an Iraqi soldier taking an old sock in used motor oil and ran it through the barrel and chamber. He called it good enough and went on patrol.
@eedd sdsd The ATF is afraid of taking it to court, supposedly because the worse case scenario for them is a judge declaring that neither the lower or upper by themselves classify as firearms anymore.
@@sovereigntyofvoyagers7380 seems like I read or heard some where, something about an ex-ATF agent testifying in court about something to that effect and the court ruling that defendant wasn’t guilty because he’s correct. I can’t remember the particulars, just vaguely recall something about that
Just want to note. During my years in the Marine Infantry, I never had one failure of any kind from my M16A2. I was issued one in bootcamp, weapons training, and fleet. None of them failed to fire at any time. I did have my M249SAW fail one time. Anytime I hear of anyone having a failure, it's because they were not cleaning it after every exercise or they were playing with it or adding performance accessories.
The m16a1 we had 77 81 were totally unreliable they fudged the numbers to prove which units were the best. Maybe the twenty round magazines were the problem so when I got out can you say mini 14

I would like to add to your statement by saying that not everybody loves the AR-15 aka the freedom gun and some people like to spend their money on supporting communism. 🤷
The downside to having the buffer tube going through the stock: you can't smack Charlie upside the dome with your AR without bending something important.
To be fair, bolt handle, forward assist, you don't want to force the round in. Also that thumb sized cutout in the bolt carrier is also a forward assist.
That is military bureaucracy for you - AR-15 was never supposed to have or need the forward assist anyway, but Army specifically demanded it. Watch the Forgotten Weapons video for more detail.
I promise I'm not a Fudd, but could we get a whiteboard of knowledge on lever-action rifles? I know I could probably go elsewhere, but I want Brandon to explain it.
It's worth reminiscing that the AR-15 platform wasn't really engineered for 5.56. I'll assume everyone knows the basics of what Ordinance Corp was up to in Vietnam, but if you don't go visit SmallArmsSolution's video on the M14 for some much needed context about the mindset of the US military at the time. Before 5.56 existed, there was the AR-10, which sought to solve as many problems with putting full-auto .308 into a lightweight gun as possible. Direct impingement was used to keep muzzle-climb at a minimum. The buffer tube is necessary to slow down the action, control rate of fire, and let the gun operate at a safe and controllable level. This came at the cost of shooting a whole bunch of gunk into the receiver and size. Lucky us, we're the USA and can actually afford cleaning kits, meaning carbon isn't an issue, and size is a very worthwhile sacrifice for controllable full auto in .308. When the military sabotaged the FAL and AR-10 because they spent too much money on the T44 (what would become the M14), Armalite had to rely on the side project they gave to airforce pilots, which was essentially an AR-10 in a new caliber known as 5.56. And I will reiterate that again. SIDE PROJECT The AR-15 was not engineered for 5.56, it was meant to see how good 5.56 was conceptually so guns could be made for it, like the AR-18.
Yes. Honestly, calling the AR "technically a piston gun" is just arguing semantics to try to either sound smarter than others, or trying to lie to yourself that the AR doesn't jam as often as it does compared to true piston guns. (Inb4 someone posts the InRange video of the AR surviving the mud test while the AKM fails - I already show it to AK simps who think it's objectively better).
Double piston gun... the sleeve of the gas key moves over the piston of the gas tube, but then the bolt is another piston with the bolt carrier its sleeve that moves.
New here… well, new to firearms in general but this guy did a better job explaining how the gun works than several other videos I’ve found, and all he has is a whiteboard. Thanks man
The thing I really like about the AR is how modular it is. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that my on-a-whim 5.56 AR purchase a couple years ago meant that I could drop another Sub-$300 and get a complete upper in my mailbox basically overnight. One background check and I'm able to shoot 5.56/223, 7.62 x 39, 12.7 x 42, and .22lr out of, basically 1 rifle. I have an AK, and it drips sex appeal and is all sorts of fun to shoot, but there's just something special about having what is essentially a lego gun that'll let me plink around with whatever the hell I want essentially at the push of two buttons and a mag swap. While not quite as satisfying as charging an AK, the side charged AR's are pretty fun. That said, I may be selling my 7.62 upper just because the AK I have already does that, but sexier. AK's are cool, reliable, and the cartridge is practically superior, imo... But variety is the spice of life.
No, 7.62x39 is not superior to 5.56 in any way shape or form. 5.56 has better terminal ballistics within 200 yards due to the massive hydrostatic shock effect and shattering rounds, and can push out to distance of 800+ consistently even in a 10.5 carbine.
I love that you bring up Thor ragnorok . That was my first thought.. omg it bugs the shit out of me he never reloads with 30 red stanag mags and the damn dust cover are closed the entire time. Reeeeeee

The AR was completely perfect, in every way, until they stopped using gun cotton (which had zero residue in the receiver) to ball powder (which gunks things up) and thus... Is the very reason Eugene stoner didn't want to sign off on the military version of the m platform.
Deliberate act by army ordinance i might add because they loved their ridiculous m14
Ian's title of the forward assist video described it perfectly: "A Solution Looking For A Problem."

The AK pattern is simply put an indestructible block of metal that makes smaller chunks of metal go very fast which makes it ideal for militia forces or units that receive minimal training or support. Which complies well with Soviet doctrine. While on a deployment he said that he witnessed an Iraqi soldier taking an old sock in used motor oil and ran it through the barrel and chamber. @@Cyborg-zg6ml Oh really?
SIDE PROJECT
The AR-15 was not engineered for 5.56, it was meant to see how good 5.56 was conceptually so guns could be made for it, like the AR-18.
Its an impulse "inside" the carrier "inside" the reciever...
Doesnt that make it Direct Impingement Impingement?
Redundancy being the point of a strong point.........🧐🤔🤔🤔
Direct impingception?
“Bruh, I’m designing a piston driven gun except the piston will be stationary and the sleeve will move around it. It’s going to be so dooope” -Stoner
Double piston gun... the sleeve of the gas key moves over the piston of the gas tube, but then the bolt is another piston with the bolt carrier its sleeve that moves.
Pistonception?
Going to start calling my leg day shorts "power bottoms."
New here… well, new to firearms in general but this guy did a better job explaining how the gun works than several other videos I’ve found, and all he has is a whiteboard. Thanks man

I really wanted this to be a joke video
And I'm sad he didn't pretend a can cannon was normal standard upper
Me: knows pretty well how ar work.
Also me: let's see what akguy has to say.
same
Double down.
Reeeeeee
