I 'crashed' the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 😐

  • Introducing the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 6!
It’s the follow-up to the impressive Ioniq 5, and Mat’s about to find out if the 6 has what it takes to match the popularity of its predecessor!
Starting with the design, you clearly won’t be mistaking either car for the other. The Ioniq 6 has a sleek, swooping body design, coupled with dual spoilers at the back. It comes with a pixelated light design similar to the 5, although it also has a bit of a strange rear bumper design. The sleek looks continue around the front, and all-in-all it’s pretty smart! It even comes with vents which remain closed when the car’s driving at slow speeds.
On the inside the design is pretty similar to the Ioniq 5 - but that’s not a bad thing! There are good quality materials across the dash, and a large infotainment & digital dial dual screen mounted to the middle of it. A centre console has been added to the 6, which comes with a good amount of storage and a couple of physical buttons.
There’s only one battery available, a 77kWh pack which is supposedly good for 338 miles of range. There will be two versions of the Ioniq 6 available - a rear-wheel drive edition that produces 228hp, or a four-wheel drive edition that can put down 325hp.
The price of the Ioniq 6 is pretty similar to the 5, starting from £47,000. But is it the stand-out EV to buy in 2023? Or should you choose something like a Model 3 or EV6 instead? Stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Just came back from holiday in Korea. In Seoul, these things are used as taxis, Ioniq 5s as well. Went to the southern resort island of Jeju too, the car rental place I went to had them lined up for what looked like miles…. They even had ID4s, Q4 e-trons and the Merc EQS available to rent, really impressive, but I’m sure cost a bomb. My family went away with a diesel Kia Sorento… 😂 Ioniq 6 looks a lot smaller than dimensions suggests when you see it on the road. The back looks weird, but the from has got character that I like.

It's a shame that so many cars these days have obstructed dials when you have the steering wheel in a comfortable position. I have to either sacrifice comfort or driving information. Heads up display kind of solves the issue. But still, the dials are completely useless most of the time. I like how Tesla handled it with the model 3 by just removing the dials entirely and putting everything in the middle. Takes some getting used to though, I bet.

i testdrove the ioniq 6 and for someone who's on the taller side you might have some issues. Im 187 and i found that to make my head fit underneath the roof comfortably i needed to recline my backrest quite a bit. A little too much. As a previous driver of BMW's and sportier cars im used to having my back upright and my legs straight in front, in the Ioniq 6 my legs were not completely straight and by backrest was a little too far reclined.

The 6 is an almost ideal electric car ... love it, but I am impressed how much physical disadvantages you find when compared to the Ioniq 5, which I personally don't like ... then I'd rather go with the EV6.
Since the biggest limitation on an electric car is the range, it should mean that a less ideal aerodynamic car would be a bit like shooting yourself in the foot.
But I guess the practicality of an SUV crossover seems to be more appealing than a long range. Fact is that in the daily life most people drive ranges that are no problem with almost all electric cars and if you don't live in Germany, like I do, nobody drives fast anyway and the aerodynamic disadvantages are not as pronounced as they are over here.
By the way here in Germany the marketing is very different from you mentioned in the UK with one battery and two motor options .... here we also have a 53kWh battery with an 111kW(151HP) motor, while there are two versions with 77kWh with a 168kW(228HP) and a 239kW(325) AWD.
The 350KW DC charging power is really groundbreaking ... over here we have a bunch of chargers which supposedly should be able to max out at 350kW, have no clue how realistic that is?
Since you don't have to stand in line for paying fuel at the petrol stations counter, you can check your mails, take a slash and off you go again.
Anyway, thanks for the very critical review ... that is how a real review should be ... Respect!
