I previously owned an sl 55 AMG silver arrow. The car was absolutely bananas, with Good power, a gun ride, and a classic look, special the silver-on-red combo. On the downside, the repairs were nonstop, even with an MB certified independent shop. The supercharger overheated, so the "Bosh 110" pump was a must. The dreadfully "Air matic" suspension is always a time ticking bomb waiting for a "Particular" line of seal to brake. The Rodeo suspension checkup was hilarious tho. The convertible top needed an adjustment and a motor replacement also changed the seals of the convertible top to stop Miami's nonstop rain coming in. Will I ever own a 2001-2007 SL 55 AMG again - probably not, but I always thought the s65 AMG twin-turbo power plant was the sweet spot.
The gearbox is really the biggest let down in the old one. The 722.6 5 speed in stock form is a bit disappointing given the older Mercedes automatics shifter much much quicker, pretty much instantaneously when the downshift button was depressed. The 722.6 can be made to shift like that with some modifications or an aftermarket controller (I have one with an OF Gear controller in a W124).
8:10 imagine telling someone in 2004 that even if they gave their SL a 625hp tune, it’ll do a slower 1/4 mile than an A-class from 15 years in the future
There isn't much old school analogue in an R230 SL. It had ground breaking features that were years away for most other cars. The active suspension (ABC), computer controlled braking (SBC) were complex systems.

Old design is definitely better
I am waiting for Gt 63 s E performance vs M5cs
I think the GT63 S E Performance would win.
@@ellobopoderososdl4596 Yeah, it produced better results on the Auto top nl channel.
@@Amarjit_Singh is that the channel where the GT63 S E got a 2.76 sec 0-60?
@@ellobopoderososdl4596 Yes
@@ellobopoderososdl4596 Of course but i want to see the Race from Carwoow
The old SL55 is still such a good looking car, they ruined it when they changed the front end.
And that backend looks like a scoop of damn ice 🍦 cream, very upsetting 😡 design marketing at Munich MB.
A great car video with a laugh, very entertaining. Thank you.
F355 vs f360 vs f430 it can be nice to see them all together :)
The r230’s of 2004-2007 are still some of my favorite SL designs. Not so much the newer ones however the brand new one is sweet as well.
The new one has a pretty modern design that will not look good in a few years.
Meanwhile the old one looks timeless even 20 years later
That old SL sounds juicy!
Thankfully this new SL does not disappoint. AMG did a great job with it
This car is much newer, yet slower than the old one in the rolling race, lol... significantly slower.
@@kordaxmint533 yeah, although the old one is modded +130bhp, the new one is still a lovely grand tourer
@@kordaxmint533 it’s also been tuned with nearly 150 additional horsepower. Not a fair comparison
@@doggedlydetermined7022 Yes, probably, but still.
The price difference is too big.
damn that old SL is jaw dropping beautiful. especially from the side, with the long engine hood and the low lines...BEAUTY
well Done club, Please get in touch! We have something for you 🎁👆👆👆
That older SL design is one of my favourites after SLS
The gearbox is really the biggest let down in the old one. The 722.6 5 speed in stock form is a bit disappointing given the older Mercedes automatics shifter much much quicker, pretty much instantaneously when the downshift button was depressed. The 722.6 can be made to shift like that with some modifications or an aftermarket controller (I have one with an OF Gear controller in a W124).
8:10 imagine telling someone in 2004 that even if they gave their SL a 625hp tune, it’ll do a slower 1/4 mile than an A-class from 15 years in the future
I think all they’d say is “what’s an A class?”
@@CPAJayhawk the 2004 SL 55 has 20bhp more than even the Ford GT 2005 model.
@@CPAJayhawk OP said 2004. The W169 A Class (2nd gen) came out that year
that's only because of traction and tall gearing . on a roll its much quicker.
There isn't much old school analogue in an R230 SL. It had ground breaking features that were years away for most other cars. The active suspension (ABC), computer controlled braking (SBC) were complex systems.
Old one looks way cooler
The sound of that old beauty...🤩
The old SL55 was on my lottery win list back in the day. Now that I could afford one I would be scared stiff of the maintenance costs!
@Life's short have fun I saw a special edition a while back (F1 Edition? Something like that) and that was seriously tempting, especially as I don't do many miles for work any more...
with all these soft limiters going around EVs might have a chance in the sound checks
Why does 476 bhp on the new SL55 seem so low? Obviously it uses it much better but I would have expected at least 510bhp.
Because there's a 63 and a 63 E-performance above the 55.
Can we appreciate how lovely fresh the old SL still looks. It's design is timeless ❤️❤️❤️
And the refresh got rid of the fish eye lights! 2009-12, the best of the best.
As nice as the new ones are.... those older E/SL/CL/C's are just works of art
Own an SL 65 AMG (12 cylinders, 1000 Nm) and Porsche Turbo S (2018). Usually I prefer to walk the old dog. It’s not faster, it’s not a race car, but it’s more impressive, very comfortable and the looks becomes better as it ages kept in mint condition.
SL 55 m113k has Stock Power. Never ever 625hp 😉
I was wondering about that too, isn't the old 55 around 507hp?
Great race Mat!
Thanks for watching. congratulations you've been selected among my 3 lucky winners for my Giveaway season DM for your price Now👆👆🔝🎁🎁🎉🎉
I love my 2003 SL500. Can’t wait to hopefully switch to an SL55 at some point.
Also, the hardtop is way cooler than the soft top. I still get looks when lowering it.
One of the biggest surprises iv had was driving that old 2004 SL55. Incredible sound, smooth power and very good comfort, such a shame they aren't the most reliable...
Glad to see the roofs are up at launch.
Not only design but also sound 🔥🔥🔥
