    I had Chicago Auto Pros tint my 128i side, passenger, and rear glass. The work was outstanding. Two years later, there's not one bubble or defect in it. I highly recommend them, and the Lumar film is awesome. I used to roast my buns on the hot pleather seats after a workday in the sun. Nighttime glare in my rearview mirrors is reduced, as well. Pro tip- Keep a copy of your tinting receipt in your glovebox, so if Johnny Law pulls you over, you can prove what level of tint you have.

    Sick of hearing tint shops say factory glass won't block UV-A. Single pane tempered glass won't, but laminated glass (like your windshield, and even side windows on many high end trim vehicles) will block virtually all UV. And I didn't hear anything about even clear factory glass having only about 80% VLT. Throw your 35% tint on top of that, and now you're at 28% instead of thinking you're legal at 35% (in Illinois). I also didn't appreciate seeing them soak the door panels of that guy's Vette... not hard to tape a sheet of plastic on the door panel to keep it dry. Expected better from this shop based the previous videos you made with them.

    Not to be grumpy old man, but think about resisting the temptation to go as dark as legally allowed. I did this with my current car b/c I lived in a state where a dark tint was allowed (forget the % VLT) and I had a doctor waiver from my dermatologist to go even darker (white as ghost, skin cancer history etc.). The side window peripheral visibilty was kind of an issue- I missed seeing oncoming cars more than once. I also drive in the city a lot, and I started putting my windows down in a lot of situations because it was hard to see people on foot, bikes, other cars etc., when rounding intersections, at crosswalks, 4 way stops, etc. That said, I will always have tinted windows going forward. The comfort, heat, and glare control alone is worth it to me regardless of aesthetics, I'll just be more careful next time about choosing the VLT for the side front windows.

    I had my windows tinted because I hate driving around in a bright fish bowl. 35% is the darkest tint you can legally have in my state though. I would have liked to do 20%. I still love the 35% tint though. It makes the car so much cozier inside and just overall a way nicer place to be.

  • @GalvatronTypeR
    @GalvatronTypeR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    A few counterpoints to this video (I have 30% tint on my car):
    -I suspect that the brand of tint this guy chose at his shop has less to do with “customer service” or “performance” and more to do with which wholesaler/middle man/brand rep would give him the biggest discount in buying the tint.
    -the notion that aftermarket tint prevents glass shatter during an accident is somewhat misleading. All cars sold in the US come with a factory tint that prevents glass shatter and aftermarket tint does not offer extra shatter protection; cars could not be sold in the US otherwise.
    -in most states, front windshield tint without a doctor’s note is very illegal; the tint shop that did my car won’t do front tint unless you show a doctor’s note and sign a document absolving them of any criminal or civil liability and I’m surprised that his shop does front tint routinely.
    -the technicians in that shop should not be spraying down the tint inside the window without blocking off the interior door panel; I don’t think I’d be pleased with seeing the dude using the squeeze bottle on the window and getting the liquid all over my leather and alcantara door panel.

    • @katdaddychap
      @katdaddychap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      On the note of shattering. It's not that the tint stops the glass from shattering. It's that the tint somewhat holds all the shattered glass together and keeps it from flying everywhere. I know this first hand after my rear glass shattered durning an accident in my pickup truck.
      On the note of brand name. Lummar is a very well known brand of film with a large dealer network. When you make a living by selling and installing a product, you better make good and well sure that the product you are selling is worth their weight or you will not be in business for too long.
      On the note of wet door panels. Automotive door panels and switches are designed to get a little bit wet. The tint solution will not hurt the panel. Panels will experience the same, if not more, levels of moisture durning a heavy rain if the door is momentarily opened when it's raining.

      He's actually not lying about Llumar. Their support and products are top notch, but you have Sun Guard, Madico, Wincos and other great film makers. Also a lot of the front tints at their darkest are 70% which you can kind of almost tell is tinted, but it's definitely questionable. Then you have 3M's crystalline which is closer to 90% which you definitely cannot tell is tinted. A doctor's note wouldn't really be that hard to procure either if you give them normal complaints. I wish the film was available in smaller quantities though for DIY. The rolls are very pricey.

I drive 2 low cars (Miata and a modded Mk5 GTI) and with all the crazy HID/LED headlight equipped cars out there, not to mention people with lifted trucks, LED light bars (people in NW Chicago suburbs love driving with those on...), or just drop in HID’s. Window tint gives a huge advantage in extremely hot climates. If you drive a car with a big greenhouse in AZ like I do, window tint is a requirement unless you enjoy being melted every time you go for a drive. It's also great for blaze riding without other drivers seeing, if you're into that sort of thing.
    On the subject of safety, we had a car on our lot vandalized overnight and the D/S front window was totally shattered. I couldn't believe how well the window tint held all the shards of glass together on the window - so much so that we could still slowly roll the window up and down. It made replacing the window a lot nicer.

    Here in Spain by law, it is illegal to have the front windows tinted in any way. Both the windscreen and side windows must remain clean as the manufacturer's specification. This same rule applies to stick on sunshades by the way. You must not affix anything to the front windows, so cars with back windows (only) tinted, look weird.

    Keep in mind that factory automotive glass already has a slight tint. Add 35% window tint film to that and the glass is now darker than 35%. That can get you a ticket if the cop pulls out the light meter. Here in Delaware no film tint is legal unless you have a medical exemption from an eye doctor.

    You forgot to mention most cars and trucks already have factory tint. So you are actually putting tint on tint making it darker than what the installer says or show's in a demonstration. For example: tint .70 + .50 =.35 % window tint.

    I absolutely love my Ceramic Tint (Johnson Film) on my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie. I decided to get 70% on the Front Windshield, a 5% Sunvisor Brow Strip, 45% on the Front Side Windows, and 5% on the Rear Side Windows and Rear Windshield. I got it around 9K miles, with a lifetime warranty; and really love the look and privacy, not to mention the protection of the leather. It’s also mostly legal in the state of Ohio. Front Side Windows should be 50%, but 45% is close enough. I don’t see any defects or particles in the tint either. Highly recommend it, and for Ceramic it was about $375 for everything which isn’t bad at all. Other places would charge $400 for normal tint or $700 for Ceramic, crazy. If you wanna have a great look and added protection, look into tinting your new car. :)

      Joe Stevens it’s 70% so, visibly there’s no difference as if there were no tint, because the front windshield glass is already at around 70% from factory. Slightly different ‘texture’ to it when looking out but it’s cuz of the ceramic film I got. :)

    Also helps to make sure the tinter knows your car... I had a tinter that had a lot of good reviews almost mess up my 2019 MX5. He sprayed too much on the dash and it disabled the keyless entry stuff for a good 24 hours until it dried off. I got lucky I didn't have to bring it to the dealer but god damn that pissed me off. And there was a scratch on my windshield tint , very small, right in the view of the driver. The scratch is in between the tint and the glass so it wasn't me. But they'll probably never fess up to it.

    - Glass actually blocks UV rays to a high degree naturally, especially the shorter wavelength, resulting in maybe 3-4% still getting through. What's the point of reducing that to 1%? I would most certainly not worry about getting melanoma from sunlight while sitting in a car. Instead I would worry about my general body health. (My work room has a reflective-coated window and I am using daylight fluorescent lighting with a natural portion of UV for health. ... Not living in a particularly sunny country though.)
    - Regarding heat, modern car glass also has special IR blocking properties, albeit relatively minor I think. (Even a minimal tint seems to be common.) And if you put tinted foil on windows, that foil will absorb the light and convert it into heat, so instead of having your car interior as heat radiators, your windows will do a portion of that, specifically on the inside, although it can still result in an overall improvement to the temperature situation since the windows have direct contact to the outside. - The IR blocking property is much more interesting, and I assume/hope it doesn't absorb it but reflects it. That would be really interesting to me: A non-tinted film that reflects almost all IR. (I drive a black car without A/C.) But the best I find reduces visible by 30%. There must be a way to selectively block only IR without blocking visible. (And I still have an aversion to films on glass, and even more so if they have prism effect.)
    IIRC in Germany any tint film at all is illegal on windshield and frontal sides.
    ⚠️ Oh that reminds me: Safety glass will lose its benefit in an accident when you cannot shatter a window anymore to get out.
    Also, he claimed you don't feel the visual light at all. I'm pretty sure that depends on the energy intensity. IR is simply somewhat longer wavelength than other colors. Later the film stats shown even mention the total solar energy reduction, which isn't doing much if it didn't also block visible light.
    - As for safety, isn't even the windshield a special type of glass that doesn't splinter into shards? (The side/back ones are safety glass anyway that shatters into grains.)
    1-1.5 mm thickness? Geez, that's a lot.
    I hope all that water pushed out from under the windshield film won't seep into the dashboard and cause trouble there.
