5 reasons to NOT live in the United States right now | Why the U.S. is broken | Goodbye New York

  • Living in Thailand for the past four years has given me a unique perspective on my home country. SUBSCRIBE ‪@PhilipJames360‬
    Video location: New York City
I recently returned to the U.S. for the first time in almost four years, and while there have been some enjoyable aspects, I have also identified five reasons why I would not want to stay in the U.S. right now.
Before we dive into those, let me say that it's been great to reconnect with old friends and the familiar surroundings of home. That sense of "wholeness" that comes from returning to your roots is universal, but there are also aspects that have made this return bittersweet.
    01:08
Safety Concerns: I feel less safe in the U.S. compared to Thailand or Japan. From worrying about my rental car being broken into at the Oakland airport, to the constant edge that comes with the possibility of confrontations, there is an overall feeling of unease. The "No Gun Zone" sign at the beginning of my trip seemed to epitomize this feeling.
    01:56
Cost of Living: The U.S. is expensive. Rent in places like New York City has doubled since 2010, and the number of homeless people has also grown correspondingly. The cost of living seems to have skyrocketed, making everyday life challenging for many.
    02:11
Quality of Life: I find that the quality of life in the U.S. doesn't match up to what I have experienced in Thailand or Japan. Whether it's dining out or shopping, I often feel like I am overpaying for the quality I receive. Additionally, there is an excessive expectation for tipping, even before service is rendered, which adds to the overall expense.
    03:50
Mental Health Crisis: There is a palpable anger and tension in the U.S., which seems to signal a mental health crisis. The peaceful and optimistic surroundings I experience in Thailand are a stark contrast to the hostility and division I've felt in the U.S. The level of violence in some U.S. cities is alarming and unsettling.
    05:40
Deteriorating Infrastructure: The U.S. doesn't feel the same as it did four years ago. There seems to be a "dark cloud" hanging over the country. Streets that were once well-maintained now have large potholes and look unkempt. It feels like the infrastructure is failing, which is a stark contrast to other parts of the world where I feel more positive and uplifted.
One aspect I appreciate about America is its capacity for innovation and adaptation. For instance, the concept Starbucks store in New York City screens customers using an Amazon Prime app, creating a more controlled and comfortable environment. It's an innovative solution to a widespread issue, and a testament to America's ability to solve problems creatively.
Like the frog that jumps out of boiling water, I feel an urge to return to the more peaceful surroundings and higher quality of life that I have found in Asia. While there may be dark clouds over the U.S. right now, I choose to seek out the more positive and healthier surroundings that I have come to love in Thailand.
Farewell, for now, from New York City and the United States.

Deutsche Welle just had a very good documentary on that. Only a few years ago, people in Canada and Europe were still smug that their poor were better off than the poor in the US. Now, everyone is just the same. It's not that surprising either. There is little difference in the economic system practiced everywhere, so everyone should get similar results. In Europe's case, their problems are compounded by following the US in to a proxy war against its main energy supplier - should have thought it all out first.

The suicide rates are the highest they have been since the U.S. has been keeping those records. YES! America has a SERIOUS mental health issue. People feel as though they are being marginalized, DISRESPECTED, devalued, and that their lives and ideas just do not matter. Since this current "administration" has no regard for our sovereign borders we are not being efforded the protection that any government has the duty to provide! We are ALL left to defend for ourselves whether from the INVADERS or from our own government THUGS! We dare not protest, even PEACEFULLY, BECAUSE if we do the government henchmen will come and take you away to their "prisons"! Between the "wokey dokey" English alphabet soup thugs and other nasty elements, people dare not "step out of line against big bro". The key is to totally vote out the Socialists, whatever you wish to call them come 2024 elections! We must muster the will to do so OR, we will wind up in the dust bin of world history!

I feel that the main problem in the US today is the unbelievable inefficiency of the government. I am referring to other advanced countries for comparison. Americans, especially middle class Americans, pay enormous taxes and get relatively little in return. This is true in terms of health care, education, social services, law enforcement, national defense, everything. Consider: The US has 18,000 different law enforcement agencies. Japan and Thailand each have one. The entire horrific governmental structure of the US needs to abolished and rebuilt. This is besides corruption which is probably rampant.

Urban Neighborhoods used to have multiple, often dozens of family owned IGA sized grocery stores.
They were crucial to their neighbors, sometimes extending credit to customers lacking money.
The repeat rioting and looting of the 60's and 70's prompted most owners to take their Insurance Checks, and relocate entire extended families to new suburbs. Or flee to booming places like Florida and California.

I have worked in both Thailand and Japan, and can attest that your review is spot on. I recently moved back to US for five months to the Bay Area. It was so sad. I travel a lot for work in Asia and nearly all the Asian cities keep getting better and better. They are modern, safe, family friendly, vibrant. Bangkok just put a massive forest park in the heart of the city and it is so beautiful and completely safe. In the states, there was an alley near my coworking office where people would shoot up 24/7. Everyday when I would drive to work, there would be junkies stopping traffic at intersections high as a kite. Luckily I am back working in Asia.

The US is feeling oppressive for more than just Black people now. Its dangerous and often ugly wherever you go whoever you are. You never know, no matter what color you are, when you'll be verbally attacked or physically accosted
I don't feel schadenfreude that white people are feeling the same as we commonly felt. I feel sad AND scared. A nice life isn't even available to them. So what hope is there for POC ?
At least I can go to my other home country and feel wanted and accepted. Being born in the US , the culture there is not anywhere near as unfamiliar as one would expect. Even thirty-five years ago when the country was under marshal law, it was still much calmer and much more peaceful than the US has ever been IMO.
The US has an extremely violent culture. It has been that way since the very beginning. It's only that now with social media that the world can begin to see past the propaganda. The violence isn't new. In fact , when you look at crime statistics crime has actually declined.
New York looked like a horror film back in the seventies and early eighties, even Manhattan. I am so glad that you made a wise decision of coming back to Asia where is the most vibrant and confident region in the world right now. This is all has something to do with the peaceful rising of China. That is one of the reason, the US feels insecure about China because the US is not up to the competition with China or China is catching up and surpassed US in some key scientific and technology fields. China operates itself with fundamentally different principle and system in compare to the US. Chinese government is people oriented government that puts the needs and demands of her citizens at first priority. That is why Chinese people got good share of the wealth the corporations have made and benefited from the development and modernization of the country over the period of last 40 years or so. The US government is very much a corporate oriented government who careless and doesn't give a damn about its people's needs and demands. That is why you don't see American people are benefited from the wealth and rich profits gained by the US corporations from setting up factories in China. The American companies benefited from China but bashes China at the same time. This is how rude and control freak mentality the US has over China. Rising China has not only helped China herself but also helped other neighboring Asian countries and other developing nations around world including South Africa and Latin American countries who used to rely on the US but without much success. They actually went backward instead of forward. Philippines is another good example of that. More and more evidence are showing that countries follow the US, most likely will fail and fall. Philippines has been an ally of the US for long time, but the country is still remained one of the poorest and most corrupted countries in Asia if not the world.

I get these cumbersome things that exist only in the Philippines though and while we were there just recently, me and my husband would have questions as to why that even exists there- questions that become comical in the end.. as much as we love the wide roads and nature in the US, thenpeace of mind we get in Ph is incomparable to the one in here, sure back in the day - but with how literally and figuratively “crazy” people have become here in the states- never in my lifetime will I ever wish for our kids to be raised in a country that is OK with drug addicts and crazy walking down the streets living right next to your home and setting their tents as if they are ultra privileged to do so.
Comical things happen in Ph sure no doubt about if, slightly stupid or very stupid - yea no doubt about it.. but think now we understand why there are still so many old people have greater and stronger physically there compared to Americans where everyone is pretty much pampered to be stagnant here - the everyday needs to walk to buy their groceries from the wet market, the needs to survive in the hustle and bustle of their surroundings, the mental fortitude that they have to have in order to carry on with their day to day lives - I was literally watching an elderly that I would say 95yo WALKING UPHILL while carrying her heavy bag - things like that that you do now see in the US.
As sad as it might seem that old woman did not look anywhere depressed again compared to how sooo many people in the states are..
she was strong and fit. And was still smiling while walking uphill..
The depression, food that exist in the US, additives that they put in whatever food they can, the people, emptiness in this vast place - the conveniency that trains your body and mind to be stagnant or complacent that your body and mind ends up programming itself to not need its functions anywhere- these are some of the factors why lifespan in here is much shorter compared to Asia.

The difference between America 4 year ago and America now is the American Optimism is gone. Everyone realizes that the American Dream™is over for all but upper middle class and the wealthy and it is not coming back. It creates a certain anxiety and darkness to know that the prosperity you were told your whole life you could work your way into is now permanently out of reach no matter how hard you hustle.
Don't get me wrong, America still has a lot of awesome stuff to offer, but you need to make serious money now to afford what was middle of middle class even just 10 years ago.

As an American born in Georgia in 1973 who grew up and went to uni there but have lived most of my adult life in South and Southeast Asia, and am now in Chiang Mai, I am most interested to hear your report. (Though I think you should have more coverage of rural areas in the U.S.) I agree that there are good things about Thai culture, such as safer environment (well, except for driving!), honesty and belief in Buddhist merit, services in temples, arts and decorations everywhere, respect for animals and nature, tasty food, good shopping malls and workplaces, as well as good festivals and events, that make it a much higher quality place to live than the U.S., not to mention lower living cost. I had a similar experience in 2010 when I came back to the U.S. after living in Sri Lanka, a country much less developed as compared to Thailand, for 10 years. I remember how it was impossible to get a good cellphone in the U.S. that would call everywhere and internationally, unlike in Sri Lanka; how terrible the medical system in the U.S. seemed after the good healthcare system in Sri Lanka; and how neglected the parks and nature areas were as compared to Sri Lanka. I remember how every time I would go in a big store in the U.S., there would be some error in the scanner, and so would have to go to the back of the store with the cashier to check the item of the price, so I thought, why not just use a calculator like in Sri Lanka, why bother with cash registers? And how the bus was always breaking down. I was in 2 areas, rural Northeast Georgia where I stayed for 3 months and then Washington, D.C., where I lived for the next year, and both types of areas had so many problems that I didn't expect to find coming back to what is regarded as a developed country, from what was regarded as one of the world's least developed countries!
One thing that did NOT appeal to me, however, was your description of a Starbucks where you can't be admitted except through a QR code. This is HIGHLY DISCRIMINATORY AGAINST OLDER PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT GOOD WITH TECHNOLOGY, as well as people who don't own smartphones (of whom the majority, not for economic reasons, but because they don't want to be distracted all the time, can't type touch-screen, or value their privacy, the case with many Western retired people here in Chiang Mai who don't have them). If you want to make sure the wrong people don't come in, there are lower tech ways to do this, like make sure there is always someone sitting in the front entrance who's working and keeping an eye on the entrance; handing everyone who walks in a menu and asking for their order immediately; and having boards mentioning a dress code. Starbucks is an expensive coffee shop, so how can homeless people be going in there just to sit and not order? Here in Chiang Mai, they go sit in shopping malls and temples and other free places to sit, and it rarely causes any problem, as they are usually clean...but they don't go into expensive coffee shops, as you can't sit there if you don't order something!

    • @PhilipJames360
      @PhilipJames360  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for your comment - agree that using QR codes can inadvertently discriminate against certain groups. This might be a response to rising crime concerns in U.S. cities, but inclusivity should always be a top priority for businesses. Your perspective is appreciated.

No paper products can hold water without this coating. I don't need to tell you what this will do to your body so you can google it yourself. I just moved back to the States in January after over 20 years abroad in various countries. At the moment, I'm in Argentina for a hernia surgery, because I could not afford health care in the US, or even what they refer to as health insurance. The total cost of my trip, including the surgery, pre-surgical exams, post-surgical follow-ups, round-trip air fare, and five weeks of accommodations plus some add-ons like consultations with an endocrinologist and a dermatologist and getting my front teeth capped, is a couple of thousand dollars less than just the DEDUCTIBLE on the cheapest health insurance I could have gotten in the US, which would have cost me almost a thousand dollars a months (which is sometimes equal to my entire month's income as a self-employed person). In contrast, when I was living in Spain just before this, I had private insurance that covered everything fully, no co-pay, no deductible, for just over a hundred euros a month. On top of that, I was also covered by Spain's public health care system. Too bad I didn't discover the hernias until after I moved away. Anyway, I just arrived in Argentina the day before yesterday, already had my pre-surgical tests and consultations, and so far have been very positively impressed with the level of care and attention. I'm documenting the whole process here for anyone who is interested in medical tourism or, as I call it, Medical Refugee status: th-cam.com/video/Z414HkR16HM/w-d-xo.html

I liked everything in the video except your "positive note". Bro, those people that you were happy to get away from at Starbucks were the same people that had their rent doubled and were forced into homelessness.
I almost want to cry for my country. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. If we believe so much in entrepreneurialism and the power of the private sector here, we need to make finance and business classes mandatory for all HS students so that they can take their ideas plus their IDEALS that youth are so often berated for, and turn them into solutions that will reduce homelessness, reduce violence, and make a better country for all.

@@Bristecom look honestly people blame crime on black and hispanic as they used to live in the inner city...but what i see is that crime is the same its just that some crimes are reported and some are not...the poor neighborhoods make their money from selling drugs to the rich white neighborhoods. Drugs are where there is money and poor neighborhoods cant afford to buy they are the dealers. They are the ones getting caught.... it has always been like this nothing has change. People move to the suburbs for more space and affordability they will always be safer than the innee city where its more dense. Because of lower density lower crime but there is still crime. Remember crime is where there is $$$$. Rich people commit as much crime as poor.

America has its problems and really high prices but it's still the hallmark for innovation globally. Most of the world's most prosperous and growing companies are American. But that doesn't mean I like the ridiculous prices here.

Those companies are the product of the last 70 years. US is still the best place to own a business / earn money. Meanwhile, 70% live check-check and our country is decaying in every imaginable way. You want to see innovation? Try Tokyo or UAE.

Personally I like Mexico and Brazil a lot. Your money does go a lot farther. I'm much better apt to get around alone in Mexico vs Brazil though because I know Spanish, but not Portuguese.
Still, I contend the best innovation happens in the US. Apple, Amd, Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, many prosperous larger (and smaller) biotech companies with life saving and extending drugs, but Healthcare is very expensive. The us also has a vast base of farmland and self sufficient in natural resources, and a decent size industrial base as well. If this deteoriated though, we'd have quite a problem.
