  • In this video, I share with you how I create a logo and image for my model railroad, using recent work on the South Omaha Terminal branding as an example. I give you background on the images that I have created and what to consider when developing a railroad image, tools that I use to actually create the logo and apply them on my model railroad layout (railroad rolling stock and equipment and buildings, plus layout material).

Hi, Eric! I’m a former railroader,
life long rail fan. I, too, loved the
    golden west scheme and was
sad to see it go. I miss the ITC
    green, CNW yellow (they didn’t
seem to know what shade they
    wanted), Katy green, Mopac
blue, SP gray, CR blue, even
PC black with the mating worms! lol! You were talking about the bright colors and I
    thought about the fallen flags
I’ve mentioned (and others), and it reminded me of the Per
Diem box car era. A lot of colorful schemes, there! Thanks for sharing! I’ve enjoyed
    watching your videos!

Thanks for the note! I totally agree with you on all the great paint schemes that you listed there. And good point about all of those cool boxcar schemes!

Love the Golden West theme! Awesome how another skill (graphic design) tie into this hobby.

Thanks! Yes, this model railroad hobby certainly has a lot of sub-hobbies tied into it.

I used MS Paint to do my Trewsville Southern Railroad logo, made a good decision of that part.

Sorry for the super late response, I have been taking a break from videos and plan to start up posting again soon. Glad to hear that worked well for your railroad logo!

Eric, this was an excellent video..chock full of useful straight forward information. I added this video to my "Favs" folder so I can refer back to it again easier. My two cents.. I don't know that you could have improved on your new logo or color. For me..that blue says Industrial.. it is a bold blue that says Strength. The yellow is a great compliment color..a brighter yellow I think would have been too flashy.. That particular yellow is a great coordinate ..again in my opinion. The Logo..love it. It is symetrical..sort of a pyramid design over all.. The lettering ..each word gets longer.. as does the bullet blocks across from each word. The Orange block is in itself a bullet that brings your attention to each and every word.. and the additional blocks balance out the logo into that pyramid design..which again ..is Strength.. The Font is straight forward ..not yeah we seen it..yet, not too flashy again as with a brighter yellow. Again..I don't think you could have improved upon it.. Out of the Park Homerun .. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in doing this sort of project and covering all to be considered. Tom

Thanks Tom, those all very good points about the logo and color scheme and I appreciate hearing your take on it. One thing I didn't mention (because there are so many things I could have went in and talked more about) is that with railroad logos, symmetry is very important. This is especially true because of how the logo is usually featured on the nose of the locomotive and the rest of the front is symmetrical. Which is why, in my opinion, the "new" BNSF logo doesn't work well, as it is weighted too much on the left. When I first started playing around with a new SOT logo and tried it out with the Golden West Service design, I noticed how it forms a pyramid and thought that is perfect.

Very interesting. I need to familiarise myself with Paint first though.......

Thanks, it is a fairly straightforward program for the most part.

@@emillerz Yes, I'm trying to work out how to select an image and adapt it to my new wording.

Is it just me or is the audio off? I was having hard time following as the video seems to be behind what the audio is doing.

You did better than I could ever do. 👍 But you tried to cover so much material, and it's seemed you were not too confident in your presentation, I didn't get a lot out of the vid. Make it shorter, and rehearse your speaking part. Meant in friendship.
