Turbo IS300 Update 8 - Dyno Day Drama!

  • In this update, I take the car over to the dyno to get everything dialed in. Everything goes relatively smooth aside from fighting some ignition issues throughout the course of the dyno session. I ended up having to stop around 21 PSI due to ignition problems and will have to re-evaluate the ignition system before attempting to turn it up any further. So far the LQ9 coil "upgrade" is a huge disappointment.

    Man! I was pumped about this Dyno Day video till the LQ9 coils started their shenanigans.
    I remember once asking in one of your videos about your ignition setup, when I found out it was the stock IS300 ones I was shocked. Now I am even more after knowing theyre more capable than the LQ9 setup.
    What we do here in our side is, we use Toyota 1ZZFE or 1UZFE smart coils for 1000+ HP drift cars.
    As well as in my IS300 at 22psi without a single hiccup. They have been working perfectly for awhile now.
    Cheap and Toyota reliable.
    Good luck!

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm kicking myself for not just doing the 1ZZ or IGN-1A coils. It seems like some people have really good luck with the LQ9 setup, but I am already running out of patience trying to troubleshoot potential issues. I may just bite the bullet and swap to the IGN-1A coils because they are proven to perform well while being very reliable. Just stinks that I have to modify my brand new engine harness for different coils. Thanks for watching man!

    • @saeed_ali78
      @saeed_ali78 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was never a big fan of the LQ9 setup for its known heat soaking and now you with the misfire at a relatively low boost settings. I went the 1ZZ route for it being cheap ($100 for six coils), and as well because it is very easy to find too.
      I hope you will be able to solve the problem soon and shoot for 30+ PSI.
      Good luck man, and keep the videos coming!

    I heard the IGN-1A race coils are the way to go, but yeah that's a bummer. I hope you figure it out, looks like it's still a beast!

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah after doing a little more research, I'm kicking myself for not going a different route as far as the coils go. Do you know of anyone that makes an IGN-1A kit for the 2JZ-GE VVTi? I found a couple kits for the GTE but they have different valve covers. Maybe I'll just have to find some GTE valve covers and do the IGN-1A setup...

    • @frogchaser

      Not sure about them being available for the GE but it'll look better with GTE valve covers at least. Yay for spending more money...

    600+ hp is still enough to run circles around pretty much anyone in St. George who dares challenge you to a race. What are your plans for putting the power to the ground? Are those tires meaty enough to make the most of it?

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      600+ hooks up in 5th gear! Would definitely be fun to have a different rear wheel/tire setup to maximize traction for high power runs.

    hope you get it worked out bro and I do have to ask was it hard to paint your dash ?looks so clean ;] I'm guessing that black top coat came off of yours like mine did and that's why you painted it ?

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not going to lie, refinishing the dash was quite a bit of work. Pulling the dash out really isn't too bad, I think there are a few good DIYs on the dash removal process. Stripping the old sticky paint off was extremely messy and pretty time-consuming. The end result is well worth it though!

    I used to use lq9 coils and had nothing but problems. I sold my setup for 1/3 the price I bought it for because I hated it so much and wanted it gone. Buy Ign1a coil packs and you won't ever have an issue again. I will be shooting for 1000whp with then and a .28 gap

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm kicking myself for not just doing the IGN-1A coils now. Seems like the LQ9 setup is just totally hit or miss and that's not something I want to deal with. I want something that is proven/reliable and it seems like the IGN-1A coils are the way to go. Did you go with someone's kit or did you make your own setup? The Induction Performance Kit is really nice but I'm guessing I'll have to get some GTE valve covers for it to work.

    • @ciliotta
      @ciliotta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I hear ya man I spent 800$ on my lq9 setup and ran into nothing but trouble making 740whp one time but the curve was not smooth by any means. I'll have a wire harness for sale very soon for Ign1a if you need. I bought wires and bracket from induction performance

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah seems like the Induction Performance setup is the way to go. What EMS are you running? Do you have any idea what you're commanding for dwell with the IGN-1As? Why are you selling the wiring harness just out of curiosity?

    • @ciliotta
      @ciliotta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on the dwell settings I don't even have my base map setup just yet I had started the car with the lq9 ignition settings just to get it running. I have a proefi 128 and it was wired to fire out of each of the 6 ignition outputs directly from the ecu. Selling my harness because I just ordered a tweakd engine harness that includes Ign1a plugs. You could also convert your lq9 harness into an Ign1a by sourcing the clips for it. I know it's been done before

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh nice. Yeah the thing that stinks is that I just barely had a custom engine harness made for the LQ9 coils (made by Tweak'd as well). Maybe they can just modify it for IGN-1As or I can do it myself like you said.

  • @RobbieBambino
    @RobbieBambino 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    shame about the ignition system, was there any particular reason you swapped out the standard lexus setup? also what sparkplugs are you using and gapped down to? eddie from the griswolds making an appearance too 😂

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Robert,
      I changed the ignition system because I assumed the factory IS300 setup was nearing its limits and wanted an upgrade that would be good for as much power as I could throw at it. Little did I know that these LQ9 coils are absolute junk (so far). I'm running Denso Iridium IK27 plugs and had them gapped down to .020". These are the same plugs and gap that I have been running for a couple years without any issues (with the stock IS300 coils)
      Haha, glad you noticed Cousin Eddie!

    • @RobbieBambino
      @RobbieBambino 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      XtremeCoupe thats great thanks matey 👍 so once you have this issue sorted how far in terms of boost pressure are you going to turn it up to? yeh i love the griswolds especially the christmas vacation, we put it on every year it just never gets old 😂

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what head haskell are you using and are your pistons 8.5:1 the piston how dose the car feel off boost?

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm running a stock GTE headgasket in combination with 8.5:1 CP pistons which probably puts my compression ratio between 8.2 - 8.3:1. Even with the compression ratio that low, the car is plenty responsive when out of boost and spools very quickly with the EFR 9180.

    18th time watching this vid. As ii finally solved my ignition issue. And alexis is pulling 8psi solid without spark blow out. It was my coil wires being exposed and causing some electric shrort under boost. Hope you got your issue sorted out my dude

      XtremeCoupe any voltage drop from alternator at wot at higher psi?. Just ran into that issue with a dsm. We thought it was ignition box, coils, and it turned out to be alternator.

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What was voltage dropping to? I typically see around 13.5V under WOT but have always wondered if the stock alternator is sufficient for 2 big fuel pumps, 2 ECMs, tons of gauges, etc.

Im just showing it to you in case you havent seen it, maybe it helps with your issues with the coils...apparently people are running 30-40 psi without problem.
    mojoperf.com/?q=node/5
    Hope this helps

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, thanks for the link! I'll check it out and see if there's any new info. It seems like there is a huge discrepancy between LQ9 users, some have great luck while others have issues similar to mine. I may end up ditching the LQ9 coils for something newer and more reliable (such as the IGN-1A). I don't like worrying about possible engine damage with misfire issues.
