  • After experiencing some ignition issues with the LQ9 coils, I decided to overhaul the ignition system and upgrade (yet again) to the IGN-1A coils. Hopefully I'll be able to get the car on the dyno soon and with any luck crank it up to break that 700 WHP mark!

    Nice ignition upgrade dude, can't wait to see how it does on the dyno! What do you suppose the limit is on the stock ignition system? I'm at about 500whp at 22psi and all is well so far. Looking to turn it up a little with e85 and hoping my ignition (among other things) will be good.

    • @twojay
      @twojay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! I was running the factory IS300 ignition system at 28 PSI on ethanol and didn't have any issues at all (running Denso Iridium IK27 plugs gapped at .020"). I'm still impressed with the capabilities of the factory ignition system, I just wanted to upgrade to something that I knew would be enough for anything I want to throw at it in the future.

    What kind of intake manifold is that?

    two jay, could you share any key details or resources that allowed you to successfully remove/relocate the OEM ecu box?

    • @twojay
      @twojay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a full custom engine harness built by Tweak'd Performance that has the "patch" harness essentially built into the harness itself. The factory ECM is mounted next to the AEM V2 near the firewall on the passenger side (under carpet/behind dash). Before that, I built a huge extension harness and had the ECM mounted underneath the driver seat. I believe Figs sells ECM extension harnesses now for people that are looking to relocate the factory ECM.

    • @GroovesAndLands
      @GroovesAndLands 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@twojay Thanks! Forgive my ignorance, because I haven't yet studied the wiring diagrams, but what about the wiring inside the OEM ecu box that doesn't go to the ecu itself?
      I'm in planning phase, but the Link G4+ Xtreme has the canbus stuff figured out so the OEM ECU can be eliminated. I think I pointed it out in another one of your videos. It is currently offered as a kit, with patch harness, that puts the new ecu into the OEM box. Seems like a great solution, except it loses its plug and play goodness factor when you want a forward-facing manifold with DBW throttle (to keep cruise), and to ditch the OEM coil ignitors in favor of the IGN1A coils...

    • @twojay
      @twojay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GroovesAndLands Yeah that Link ECU looked like a really cool option, but there are definitely some configurations where it's not quite as ideal as it seems. If you planned to stick with the stock intake manifold (factory ECM location) then it would be very clean and simple solution. Once you start trying to fit stuff where it wasn't intended, some level of rewiring/relocation is almost inevitable.
      With my current setup, part of the custom harness still runs to near the factory ECM location because like you mentioned there are a few connections for the body harness up there as well. I basically run that portion of the harness through the engine bay and down through one of the holes behind the driver side headlight, so those connections are basically hidden behind the front bumper. The one drawback to this is that water could easily get to these connections if the car was ever driven in the rain, but that is non-issue for me because that will never happen. Hopefully that all makes sense.

  • @akarilotube

    At what point did you abandon the stock coils before going to the LQ9's? I'm running 24psi on the stock coils and havn't had any issues to speak of.

    • @twojay
      @twojay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LQ9 coils did not work well for me, that's why I went to the IGN-1A coils (as seen in the video). I was not experiencing any ignition issues with the factory ignition system, but wanted to upgrade to something that I knew was not going to be a bottleneck moving forward. I'm able to run more dwell and a larger plug gap with the IGN-1A coils which should mean a stronger, more efficient spark. That being said, I think there are plenty of builds that seem to have good luck with the factory ignition system.

      @@twojay Cool, I was just wondering if you had run across a limiting factor with the facorty setup. Love the build and would like to communicate with you about a few other parameters on your setup. Is there a way to PM through TH-cam that you're aware of?
