    Quick Correction:
    -While the pulse rifle is automatically available in the store in the original game, you do have to find "schematics" hidden in the old levels to unlock more weapons like the flamethrower. Still - the remake has you find the actual weapons themselves, which I think is a much better way to introduce these weapons to players.

    • @fluffywolfo3663
      @fluffywolfo3663 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Concur'd. It's... _very_ easy to watch some guides on the game and say "Ugh, flamethrower? No thank you!" or just think "I don't have the money for this, I need NODES"
      But this way, you are GOING to get that weapon and you are GOING to try it.

      Well, the point of making that as "schematic first, buy second" in the original is to have a sense of resource management. It's a survival game, you must use items (credits, ammo, nodes) wisely so it would be on your advantage. The new one is less risky and too tame.

    What I really like which another TH-camr pointed out is that, while Isaac finally speaks and has his own dialogue in the game, he only actually speaks when around other people. So unlike most games, let’s say for example, Nathan Drake in Uncharted, he isn’t constantly spouting random dialogue to help the player at key moments. They don’t do that here and I think it was a great choice. I don’t want the character to randomly say something that will conveniently help me figure out the puzzle. The most you will hear from Isaac are his grunts and heavy breathing which is super refreshing and only immerses you more as a player.

      Dead Space was the first game I played that had its score adapt to what was happening on screen, and was truly terrifying in its application. Jumpscares and fighting sequences were accented by intense scoring that would fade in naturally, and fade out as soon as the coast was clear. The layering in with atmospheric SFX, foley, screams, and gunfire was also very ahead of its time; something I feel that the remake is sorely missing. It was also PIVOTAL to understanding when the player was in danger or not. With the original game devs communicating how hard it was hard to portray an enemy coming from behind you with such a tight third person angle, sound design was an important communication tool for understanding danger. It also worked to deepen the games tension ("why do I hear tense music even though I don't see anything?") with little to nothing visual to cause it. The quarantine comparisons here are so stark. When the quarantine begins in the original, a strong asynchronous bass drum banging (which sounds like movement in vents) can be heard along with the also rhythmic whirling of the alarm, creating a mismatched pattern of sound that creates a more dynamic guttural reaction, heightening the anxiety and tension. Like an unescapable march or war drum, spelling out your demise. In the remake, that drum banging isn't in the scene, and just has the higher pitch rhythm of the alarm. It's a small difference in the big picture, but for a game that had such a lasting impact in its sound design, it's pretty disappointing to see that stripped away.

    Only thing I wish they'd retain from the original is how Isaac walked. In the original Isaac is terrified, so he's walking around always paranoid, hunched over a little bit like he just wants to cower in a corner, but upright enough like he has to keep remindjng himself to be brave to find his beloved.
    In the remake he's walking pretty normal.

    For instance, in the original, if you killed an enemy it immediately dropped an item. In the remake, you have to either shoot or stomp the corpse to get them to drop an item... the same as it was in Dead Space 2 and 3. There is so many subtle improvements that make it definitively better, even if some aspects of the original were better than the remake.

    • @Plexi_CF
      @Plexi_CF ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is a good point, while the game does look really nice and the team did a good job, readability goes down with all the extra clutter.
      Things that don't help and stuff I can point to:
      Large amount of repeating panel cut lines and samey details, bright metal edge wear on everything creating more highlights than needed, excessive specular reflections on almost all surfaces that make the environment look greasy and shiny, etc... Also, the extremely dark and dim atmosphere doesn't help, it hides all the hard work. I'm nitpicking here but just some things I notice that give credit to the OG design.

    ive been playing the original probably 3 times a year since its release, its one of my favorite games of all time. and to be brutally honest, i still prefer it over the remake. it may be in part of nostalgia, but i feel the sound design, the cast and voice acting in particular, to be far superior over the newer one. I like the new lore and all, but i still feel the OG flowed so well from chapter to chapter and Peter Mensah's voice acting for Hammond was some of the best ive ever seen in a video game. All in all, i personally don't think this masterpiece needed a remake, BUT i am glad to see it getting recognized for its greatness 15 years latter.

    While the new game graphically has much more fidelity of course, there's something about the original's ART DIRECTION and style I still prefer. It's so distinct. The new game (and many newer games) try to go for more and more realistic when I think too much realism can get in the way of unique art design and tone. Everything's more vibrant and contrasts well in the original, especially in its lightning. I know the remake has apparently improved lightning but I keep seeing these comparison shots together and thinking 'man the original just "POPS" more. To me the original still retains the king of atmosphere.

    Great video. I'm curious if the pixelated ssr reflections are a result of using dlss or if you were at native resolution at the time?
    SSR is often rendered at 1/4 or even 1/8 res in a lot of games with no option to change it, so I'm not expecting dlss to have been the cause but it is possible.

    Sign me up for the 2008 classic.
    Is it just me or in these side by side comparison shots does the original still "POP" more visually. It just feels more vibrant and the lighting feels nicer and stylized. See the way the light in 16:10 actually BLINDS you for a little bit, obscuring your vision and making it even more tense in an already tense scene? That's how you build tension.

And some ambient lighting and color looks better too. But also vice versa. Anyway, it's a good remake. But not worth 80 bucks like a game made from scratch. I think I'll wait for a sale. The only thing I find disappointing is how much Isaac seemed less terrified and more like his personality in dead space 2. Like the way he walks, shouts and stomps. In ds2 he's traumatized but more confident, and furious, he takes it personally. It doesn't feel quite as right in the first game because he's an everyman caught off guard in this nightmare and I remember feeling so scared because he seemed so scared and the cathartic and scared screams of his stomps matched that. I think him being a silent protagonist also made it easier to wonder what he was thinking, and it kept the game from making cheesy quips like resident evil 4 or other contemporaries. His voice acting is great and a lot of the time it works but sometimes he seems just kinda frustrated when before he was, well, speechless
