  • Today we test how well Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner works. This test will focus on how much carbon buildup is removed from the piston heads.
    Test Parameters:
    Subject Vehicle: 2017 Chevy Equinox LT 2.4L
    Doses: 2 Consecutive Tanks with 1 bottle each
    Fuel Used: Esso Synergy 89 octane
    Driving Conditions: 80% Highway 20% City, First tank driven in hot weather, second tank driven in mild weather
    Spark plugs were cleaned between each fillup.

    Hi William, this mostly oil based product produced the same heavy oily carbon on top of the piston as the Amsoil PI, it too used a cheap petroleum base oil and cleaning agents such as PEA. As I commented on the Amsoil, it clearly is causing poor atomization, heavy soot and oxidized oil residues which is the very stuff that clogs the drain ports in the oil control rings and causes stuck oil rings, and oil consumption. This is likely the same formulation as Amsoil PI, formulated by Lubrizol, a major additive producer, except it has the traditional red Redline dye. Although I am an Amsoil customer for 35 years, I do not use additives. Keep gas out of the engine oil and oil out of your gas. The light gray areas on the pistons before treatment is the exposed piston, and dry, thin layer of flaking carbon near the exhaust valves indicates exceptional combustion. Keep using the mid grade, and I recommend the premium if want to remove more of that carbon.

      How have you determined this hypothesis? From an engineering pt of view I'm asking. Yes, PEA is a common (better) additive but heavy petroleum shouldn't be! I use Top Tier rated fuels exclusively in our '21 BMW X6 hybrid SUV & my trusty '22 Ranger XLT FX4 truck w/gen2 GTDI engine. Top Tier fuels utilize much more detergents/additives than required by Fed law. Major automakers have been petitioning for higher detergents in (all grades) gasoline for nearly a decade thus Top Tier certification was established. Google Top Tier rated gas ⛽️ stations. -NW Ohio

      What makes you think premium have anything to do with cleaning or more additives? Ithas the same exact additives as the 87, only different is the additives to resist detonation not to clean the engine

      @davidcheshire127 it may have more PEA, but that 60-70% cheap petroleum is leaving oxidized oil, causing reduced combustion and more soot. The sparkplugs were cleaned after each use, due to soot and oil residue. A tank of premium fuel and daily Italian Tune Ups works better.

    Yes that's part of it. Along with it's removing the access carbon down inside of the cylinder and piston rings still again. Along with any ports holes and galley's to that it's still stuck.,or caked on to. That is why it brings up more carbon build up and sludge grime on the top of the piston again. Because it's still trying to finish cleaning out the carbon deposits that's leftover inside of those cylinder walls and piston oil rings yet. I'd stick with one in-between two to three gas tank fill ups.

    Good video. Short and to the point. Redline talks a lot about having a little bit in the tank for an ongoing basis. What I do is use a full container with the full tank and then keep refilling the tank each time it gets to half a tank. I use cheap Sam's club gasoline which has no additives. I don't know if what you put in your tank has something in it. I feel like adding this to super cheap gasoline is a little better than just buying expensive gasoline like the shell premium. I'm going to subscribe and keep watching the tests you do. I would agree with what someone else said which is that this is a full system cleaner. Thanks for the effort in making the video. Was going to comment that Mobil Gasolines in the US meet the "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Standard". Doesn't seem to be the Case currently (March 2024) in Canada however.
      Been using "Top Tier" fuels since the beginning (2004)... Though recently realized over the last 3-4 years that some of the "Top Tier" stations/brands I've relied on have left the program... So I'd advise if you have/are using "Top Tier" to check the pump/station for the Top Tier Logo and/or confirm the current listings on its website (the brands are also usually good about highlighting the benefits of Top Tier, if they still meet the standard). Locally Kwik Trip/Kwik Star had been a long time provider but isn't any longer. They still provide a Guarantee with its fuels but no mention of Top Tier... :(

    Actually from other videos that i've seen on Utube that Redline product is very high in PEA and excellent for soaking piston tops, spark plugs, valve tops as it dissolves carbon better than just about any other treatment out there. I would pour in just enough into all cylinders through the plug holes and let the piston tops soak overnight and then the next day take it for a long drive and see how much is cleaned.

      It definitely works great for injectors. I used it in a car that already ran perfectly smooth and quiet, about 1/2 tank in the engine got so smooth and quiet coming to a stop I had to listen to hear if it was even running, and that thing has dual glasspacks on it. It also got rid of light pinging in overdrive on warm days. Noticed similar results with our van, idle became smoother and quieter and response improved a little. Tried it in my carbureted truck that was having pinging issues in high gear passing in high gear on the highway and the pinging issue disappeared and the idle quality improved a little. My neighbors dodge grand caravan was having a random cylinder 3 misfire mostly warming up even after new sparkplugs and coils and a treatment of this stuff fixed the occasional misfire and they said it runs better in general.

    How where you driving. I suggest driving like you have sea foam and then do a tank of 87 not premium. While premium does clean. If your engine isn’t tuned to burn it’ll leave carbon build up.
    Do a borescope with just a tank. As I feel you had cleaner pistons before treatment. But you can be economical in your driving as it needs to get hot. Also I suggest changing plugs for a clean burn. And how old is your O2 sensors.

    • @BillOfAllTrades2016
      @BillOfAllTrades2016  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I drove mostly highway and I drove normally. There are no special driving instructions on the label. I don’t drive a special way just because the redline is in the tank. I didn’t use premium I used mid grade fuel. And your engine does not need to be tuned to run mid grade fuel. The instructions say pour in the tank and fill. My experiment is laid out the same as any regular driver would use the product and as the manufacturer states.

    More PEA or not should totally depend on your engine condition. Sometimes, more PEA destroy your engine. I’ve seen thousands of samples that people adding PEA into their heavily carbonized engine and hard carbon particles falling off and scratch the cylinder wall. So, think twice before you put PEA in your gas tank
    Also you have to change oil right after the PEA treatment.
    For this reason, fuel treatment is and will always be the last option I’d consider, only if the engine is really bad and ready to be replaced

    • @BillOfAllTrades2016
      @BillOfAllTrades2016  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Occasional high octane gas will not clean the carbon deposits like a quality fuel additive. If you wanted the higher octane fuel to make a noticeable difference in carbon you would have to run only high octane for many consecutive tanks. That’s very costly. ie my tank is $80 to fill with 87 octane but $120 or more for 93 octane. Or you can use one $25 bottle of this once a year.
