DFU Mode on iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR: How To DFU Restore Your iPhone

- In this video, we're going to show you how to put your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR into DFU mode and do a DFU restore.

What is DFU mode? DFU stands for "Device Firmware Update." A DFU restore is the deepest type of restore that you can do on an iPhone. It takes all the software off and puts it back on again. Since it affects the iPhone's firmware and not just its software, a DFU restore can even fix some hardware problems.
If you're a longtime fan of Payette Forward, we recommend the DFU restore in a lot of our videos. When I was at Apple, we did DFU restores all the time, because it's the last thing you do before you decide that the iPhone is actually broken. Somebody would come in with a phone that they think wouldn't work, and we'd always try a DFU restore before giving them a replacement phone.
How To DFU Restore iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR:
1. Plug your iPhone into a computer with iTunes.
2. Quickly press the volume up button, the volume down button, and then press and hold the side button until the screen turns black.
3. As soon as the screen turns black, keep holding the side button on the right, and then press and hold the volume down button for 5 seconds.
4. After five seconds, keep holding the volume down button and let go of the side button until your iPhone appears in iTunes, and iTunes says it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR MAC USERS:
If you have a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15, you'll use Finder instead of iTunes. Open Finder on your Mac - your iPhone should appear under "Locations".
I tried it and the screen goes black as described....followed instructions and it does not appear in Finder. What should we try?

For anyone having compatibility issues with ios 14 this is the best method to iron out bugs as well. When I had a android and messed around with roms it was always advisable to wipe before installing new firmware.

Main Point: I didn't have to go through the entire DFR process to restore dysfunctional wallet access
XR wasn't able to access "wallet" either via app icon or power button double-tap. You may find this sequence helpful: 1) pressed volume up button 2) volume down button 3) held power button for 20 seconds 4) phone went black 5) Apple icon appeared 6) carrier service message popped up asking to accept service carrier 7) entered 6-digit pin 8) home screen appeared 9) was able to access the wallet via both power button double-tap and through app icon.
You may already know why, but I thought it may be useful to some.

Good job guy! However you don’t have to hold the vol down and power after the screen turns off. Just press and release vol up> press and release vol down> then hold just the power button till you see the iTunes logo on the screen. If you have trouble getting the iPhone into Recovery mode, you can also put it into this mode by plugging it into a wall outlet.

So after the iPhone software update is complete. The extracting process begins which will take time is that correct?
When I hold shift and click restore, I can find the back up folder I want, but can't find the .ipsw file that is required. How/Where do I get that? Using wimdows

Hi.
I Bought an iPhone XS Max, which seems perfectly normal. I can factory reset the device, but on iTunes i can't restore it. It said first to turn off find my iPhone, which i did, and then when i try to restore it shows the message : "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. The requested resource was not found".
Can it be Jailbroken? Should i enter DFU mode or try other steps? It seems the iPhone can't connect to the servers for some reason.

Hello can someone help please?! Let me say that my iphone is not backup and no icloud back up either. (Im not trying to lose my data or anything on my phone) My iphone 8 has the bootloop problem constantly showing the apple logo. im wondering if i put my phone into DFU mode will it erase everything? Or show i try the recovery mode better? Ive seen try hard reset and if that doesnt work try updating through itunes. If that doesnt work try recovery mode then DFU? Or what should i do?
the screen is black and not responding.. so, other than counting to ten(for the 10 seconds its supposed to take to reset) i don't know when the screen is "off" to go to step two, volume down & side button. Any other suggestions?

So I have my iPhoneX for 2 years now and suddenly everything stop working so I did the reset(up,down and side) then work on my windows downloads and did the step by step. Took me to the firmware, downloaded, verify, extracting, then firmware downloaded. Click start to fix but took me to trial version and buy now
My Iphone X’s mobile data is not working properly.. sometimes it works but most of the time i have to turn airplane mode on in every 2 minutes. Mobile data works if my phone is connected with a call.. will the dfu restore work for me?

Worked with my iPhone 11 Pro. For some reason, it was in this Swipe to Upgrade mode. This happened to me on launch day.

Hold down that bottom volume. Once iTunes shows that it is in restore mode you can release. iPhone screen will be black. Saved me a trip to the Apple store. I am loving my iPhone 11 Pro Max after watching this video to resolve the starting problem.

Would love to try this, but the iPhone I’m trying to DFU due to charging issues… won’t charge ;). I can’t get enough juice into it to stay on longer than a minute or so. It only (barely) charges at all via wireless and only stays connected via cable for about 4 seconds. It’s driving me bonkers.
