A DFU restore is the deepest type of iPhone restore. It's the last step on the road to determining whether a software problem is causing whatever issue you're having on your iPhone. If a DFU restore doesn't fix it, it's usually a hardware problem.
Before putting an iPhone DFU mode, it's very important to create a backup. A DFU restore erases and reloads every line of code on your iPhone. Without a backup, you'll lose all of your data and information.

📱 How To DFU restore an iPhone 8 or newer: Plug your iPhone into your computer and open iTunes (on a PC or Mac running MacOS 10.14 or earlier) or Finder (on newer Macs). Quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the screen goes black.
When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down button while continuing to hold the side button. Hold both buttons for five seconds, then release the side button while continuing to hold the volume down button. Keep holding the volume down button until your iPhone appears in Finder or iTunes. Finally, click Restore iPhone.

Change is a good thing
I've noticed that when I engage a person in US Constitutional issues that I have far fewer people calling me names as I did before Elon Musk announced buying Twitter. He hasn't even bought Twitter and Twitter is less toxic already. I believe his politics are in between the left or right (Centrist). They are my politics, but I like the result.

That's not what I said. I said that since Elon Musk has made an offer on Twitter that when I engage people in US Constitutional issues fewer people are calling me names, not that I am engaging with fewer people.
I've had Parkinson's for over 26 years and when it came about that I couldn't type on a computer anymore I had to retire. I became bored and started studying the US Constitution. Sometimes when I see something stated wrongly about the US Constitution or a lack of understanding of the US Constitution I gently try to show them what the US Constitution actually says. Unfortunately because I can't type or can barely type on my iPhone I use dictation which is very tiring, takes a long time, and can be problematic.
You guys are ABSOLUTELY fantastic! I often refer customers to your channel for techniques to use with their devices. I also learn a thing or two myself. Bravo David & David!

I’m doing all the steps but once I release the side button the Apple logo pops up and the phone turns back on. Idk why it’s not work when I’ve done it before
Things have evolved since this video. The latest version of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS allows you to DFU Update, rather than do a DFU Restore. An updated video on this topic would be welcomed.
Imagine having all of the instructions for this process on one screen so it's not incredibly tedious to perform while watching the video. Incredible concept I know.

open itunes on your pc and make sure your iphone is linked to itunes and do it there
I could do this with an iPad but not my 12 mini from your previous dfu video. This version looks slightly different.

What is the difference between DFU mode and the restor Mac symbol when you hold down the side button and you see the computer logo and not the black screen?
Omg! I have been trying for literally a month now! You guys just saved my phone I have tried everything else to fix it, even finally calling apple support. My pc kept showing “Apple mobile device (recovery Mode) I’m hoping this fixes it. I locked myself out trying to keep my 6-year- old sone wha already knows some hacking skills 😂 from getting in. Oops, forgot my own passcode so have been unable to use certain settings BN my hearing aids…. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Tried my sim in another phone and it works - didnt have anyone willing to put their sim in my phone though so - im at the DFU bit in your video now cuz nothing else worked - scarey but gonna try it

i had problems w my phone all day (couldn't make calls/texts were failing). contacted the carrier for help and reset the phone which seemed to fix things, until once again messages started to fail. i reset the phone a second time, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow-bizarre.

Thanks for the video. I can’t get my iPhone (the touch screen is not working) to recognize the cord. I’ve tried Apple cords and non Apple cords and Everytime the iPhone connects to a wire it says “ unlock iPhone to use accessories” but I can’t unlock it because the screen doesn’t work.
Therefore, it will not allow me to get in dfu mode bc the comp (a Mac) is not recognizing that anything is plugged in. Help!
I’m currently having the same issue with an iphone XR, but the difference is the screen won’t light up and the touch still works. Just won’t recognize any cord when connected to computer. Weird.
What do you do if you want to do a DFU restore because your phone isn’t charging? I can’t use the cable to connect to the computer. Is there another way?

The toughest part is that people don’t do the last step long enough. The rule is 10 seconds, but “hold until it shows up in iTunes” is more like it. In my experience, it can take as long as 30 seconds.

If somebody is using Norton then likely have no business trying to reset/repair a device to begin with... probably a good thing that it gets in their way.
I have a compass glitch that effect all gps apps like Pokémon Go, Maps, and Google Maps. It always shows me facing 45 degrees difference from reality.
It started on my First Gen SE I had years ago after I dropped it really hard, bought a 6S Restored from iCloud back up, and I recently got a 12 Pro Max and still 45 degrees off in a GPS App.
I'd be nice to have this fixed on such an expensive device.
@Johnny Rep I think that too. Like it’s calibration is off and never reset. Like it carried it over.
I’m pretty sure I tried just logging in and redownloading my apps, but seems something deep in in settings got synced.
It shows true when I’m moving fast in a car, but when walking or biking the compass is offset on map apps and Pokémon Go.

@@PayetteForward Hope you can answer this very important Question, we know it's best to just charge your iPhone battery to 80% as that causes less wear on your battery, ok if you buy a brand new iPhone, should you use it before charging it and let the battery go down to zero and shut off, then charge it to 100% and then after that Obay the 80% and 20% battery rule, please do a video about this, especially for people who buy a brand new iPhone.

@Dave Boy From my limited knowledge, that technique when getting a new device is only for Lithium Polymer batteries, not the case for Lithium Ion batteries. With Li-Ion batteries it supposedly doesn’t matter, I still like to charge it to full before the first use and then use it like normal from there on out. (For the record i’ve been getting the newest iphone since the iphone SE 2020 and i’ve maintained really good battery health by the time the next one comes out).

when i hold down the vol btn and side btn it tries to make an emergency call. never goes into DFU mode. this is 3rd gen SE. with ios 17.4

at the first use it's safe to charge to 100% but you have to use the 20-80 rule after if you want a healthy battery

What happens to the eSim when you DFU Restore?
Is not working for my Iphone 12, someone jailbroke my device and I am working on trying to fix it. Seems the hard-button values have been changed or programmed themselves. It refuses to go into DFU but also doesn't seem to be discoverable on the PC. Any suggestions if you see this?
I did the DFU mode maybe 12 times, exactly the same way, before it suddenly worked.

Does dfu only work on Mac? Could it work on a hp pavilion? I have a iPhone se 2 that won't go passed the apple logo. When I hard reset it it tell me to plug into iTunes. When I plug it in and its done doing its thing ,it says "the iphone `iphone` could not be restored. An unknown error occurred" I tried everything but the dfu but I don't have a Mac.

For anyone a little confused (at least I was and I had a few tries before I figured it out) In step 3 they say to press and release the side button and continue to hold the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON, when i did mine, I had to press both down and the release the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON so i was still holding the side button, at the end of the video I watched you hold down the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON and then say to release the side button, so anyone in confusion I hope this helps, press both, release volume down button and continue to hold the side button until this pops up!

I am getting error 9. Apple and some stores say its unfixable HOWEVER, I have seen TH-cam videos and read comments of people thinking their device was a goner from error 9 and being able to restore it. Do you all know anything about it? Some fixes were as simple as trying a different cable, some say they tried dozens and eventually one worked. Some worked from trying a different usb port, others it was the antivirus software. thoughts? have you had any success restoring this issue?

My phone is stuck in DFU mode... but I did not choose to put it there. However, software I've downloaded that is meant to take the phone out of recovery mode say, "Your phone is in DFU mode."
I can't get it out of DFU mode using the steps you've shown above. Been trying for the past three hours.

That’s a good question.
Unless you click Restore Now, your data is recoverable while in DFU mode.
Will it restore the battery so it doesn't lose power so fast?
It will not, that may be a battery problem! I would recommend looking into repair options either with Apple or a 3rd Party.

Actually there is a way to remove activation lock.. There are many software you can use to remove it and Apple can remove it also
Can someone please help me? When I click OK at 2:58, it instantly snaps me back to the "music" page in iTunes without allowing me to hit "Restore iPhone". Does anyone have any solutions for this?
I am using a brand new iPhone 13 mini. I installed the 15.5 update directly after turning it on. From day one the performance feels horrendous. Animation stutters and frame drops occur pretty often. In addition the gesture to get back to the home screen is laggy from time to time. Cant belief I am using an iPhone. Apple checked the hardware and told me it is fine and I should wait for a software update. I already tried all kind of resets followed by a software restore via iTunes. Issues are still there. Is a restore over DFU any different than a clean restore via iTunes? If yes, this would be my last shot. Otherwise I will probably get rid of the phone as I am really sensitive to stuttering and this is driving me nuts…

Might've been said already but if you're on a Mac, do not try this with the USB C to Lightning cable, it will not work. Use the USB A (big rectangle) to Lightning cable instead. I'm not sure why this is but I wasted an hour and a lot of frustration to find this out.
Anytime I've plugged my phone into my pc (running itunes) it always shows up and the phone asks if I trust the PC.
