- Chinese Diesel Heaters often sound noisy when on full blast; we test an upgraded exhaust and intake filter to see if it can make the diesel heater quieter.

I am not convinced the decibels are super accurate in terms of the levels; but the main thing is you can see the upgrades had an affect on lowering the noisy heater - it cannot do much about the unit noise; ours is a big boy 5kw unit too.
When I tested the decibels it was with an app on my phone called Decibel meter and I probably had it too close at 50cm; but I kept it in the same place each time for comparison. In hindsight I probably would review it at shoulder height next time as i'd hope nobody would be laying on the floor listening to my diesel heater - but that was the uniform method I chose to use.
These are the products used in this diesel heater noise reduction quest:
Upgraded diesel heater intake filter: amzn.to/48tnGmS
Upgraded diesel heater exhaust: ebay.us/B2WdOi
There are few other different designs on the market for both the diesel heater exhaust and intake filter, I chose these ones (especially the muffler) as they seemed like quality upgrades on paper and have made the overall unit quieter.

Sounds much better. Good job Rich x
Thank you 😊
Love the idea of a heat exchanger to utilise some of that wasted heat. Look forward to that one. All the best to you all.
Thanks Peter. I’ve started collecting the bits I need to try it out. Will keep you posted. Hope you’re travels are going well
Morning! 😎👍🏻 Top mod as usual! If it sounds quieter to your ear then that’s better than any db reading to be honest.
Thanks Ian. Yeah totally agree with that. It’s all by ear. Cheers buddy
Hello there. Just watched your video on the silencer. With mine. I extended it with a piece of 22mm copper pipe to the rear under my bumper. Works a treat. Make it quieter and throws exhaust gases away from my van. Works with original silencer. Great videos….
Sounds great! I think I’ll probably grab some pipe and add on the OG one. No reason not to until I get to the EGR hack.
Morning Guys. It’s a sad fact in the aging process when loud exhausts are seen as a bad thing! Seriously, you’ve made a big improvement.
Hehe. Tell us about it. Don’t worry the mini pickup won’t be getting quieter (if I ever get it out).
Another great one. Thanks
Thanks Kev. Hope you’re build is going well.
Brilliant
The pump was my biggest concern
But I got the silent pump from James absolutely amazing
You can’t hear a thing
They can be mounted anywhere too
I have mine screwed under the floor
That’s good to know. Sounds so good I’ll have to check it out.
@@WanderbusAdventures check out videos on TH-cam mate for silent pump
James browningsmith
I emailed the guy he’s brilliant
the pump makes no noise and it anti syphon so strong too
Brilliant
Nice done again. ❤❤❤
Thanks guys 🚐🚐
Ours is the same as yours, I think. Ours is in the boot though, so hear it inside. On Daves list of things to sort 🙂. We were parked next to Max and Sophie last night, and Max was concerned about the noise(as theirs is underslung). I couldn't hear it though,at all, so I wouldn't worry about your neighbours too much. 😀
Ah that’s good to know. Max and I share the same worry here, so good to know this. Hope you guys had a good meetup x
@WanderbusAdventures we did, thanks. It was nice to get off the drive and have a good catch up x
Amazing. Let us know if you’re heading down south x
@@WanderbusAdventures will do. We definitely will be at some point 👍🏻
That sounds great , just a quicky how dose condensation get out in new exhaust all the others seem to have drip holes
Good question! I asked the manufacturer and they report they’ve used this setup for years without any issues. They also pointed out for marine use they must be sealed and have no drain.
Now I’ve reflected on it I can’t see there being a problem. Id have thought the majority would pass out the end or be removed when the vehicle is in motion.
Great video as usual buddy... Noise levels are because it's the speed and or pressure coming out.. 1, put old silencer back on and extend exhaust out and around the back of the van towards the driverside or 2, use two new silencers.second one around where number plate goes.. hope I've explained it good enough buddy..can't remember your name, sorry
Makes good sense to me and sounds like a neat solution. Pardon the pun 😊
@@WanderbusAdventures You're welcome, i thought it was a smoking idea :)
😎 💨
Where did you source the exhaust from ? Great vid by the way if it sounds good to the ear that's good enough for me
Thanks Carl, it was from eBay. It was one of these: ebay.us/YqVsSb
@@WanderbusAdventures thanks 👍
Where did you purchase the new silencer from?
It was from a company who sell through eBay. Not sure if they offer direct. ebay.us/B2WdOi
what sound level do you think is acceptable . i thought 70db is ok . nice work
Agree, especially at the distance measured (I had it on the floor). What I will say is it seems to have lowered the pitch a bit too which I think is better. Less whooshy perhaps - if that’s a good term?
One problem vehicle exhaust is suppressing a pulsing gas. Here we are looking at continuous flow. Something i noticed, my first exhaust pipe rotted and had holes in it. Was louder when i fitted new pipe. Have a 2nd heater tomorrow to experiment with. Ordered box silencer but not impressed by yt vids.
Yes, you do get a pulse for sure with these.
Ah interesting those box silencers. I might grab one to do a test too. It can always go on the end. At the time of this video the little box ones weren’t really mainstream I don’t think.
There is someone in the UK who built a ultra quiet fuel pump. Foresty Forest TH-cam channel tried it out and put the contact details in a video
Cool. Will check that out. Will likely swap the pump out at some point. Thank you.
How about using both silencers at the same time?
I think that’s a smart idea. I need to get a short piece of pipe to join them. Will report back.
Do you think adding a second muffler on to the existing on would make it even quieter ???
Yeah I reckon it would. Will give it a go and report back 😊
@@WanderbusAdventures That would be great because I have a diesel heater as well. Gonna try and get the afterburner kit Ford. But I first gotta see if mine's compatible.
I'll be putting it in my homemade camper
Does your heater still run fine? I do know from my changes to my car that using different mufflers can impact back pressure, the amount of force needed to expel exhaust, in some cases. It may not apply to diesel heater mufflers as much or not at all. I see it didn't fail right off the bat so that's good news.
Touch wood it’s been fine. Main thing to consider is not creating restrictions/kinks. I’ll likely service it this winter coming to see how it’s fairing but so far so good.
@@WanderbusAdventures That is great! Best wishes
Is your van insulated?
Yes. We have 25mm in the floor. 50mm on the walled parts and ceiling. We do have quite a few windows so have insulated blinds and curtains too.
made my own silencer and was totally silent at low heat and barely hear it at full chat.
Cool. How did you make it?
i used a £3 bog brush holder from asda.@@WanderbusAdventures
Is the noise so bad? I'm on week 6 with mine now and just accept it and use it as a sleeping aid tbh 😂
To be fair inside we use it as the same Rob 😂. It’s not louder than the boiler in the house when we are inside - well maybe a bit louder. Or a bit quieter now 🤔.
I’m with you. My new heater pump is better than the old one. I don’t hear the heater when I’m inside.
Just get a log burner, the sound of crackling wood is so relaxing, and who cares if those who are trying to sleep in the tent next to you suffer,at least you all are lovely and cosy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Would love a log burner John. Maybe one day 🤔
Use both mufflers...
Not a bad shout this.
How dare you, leave your better half, shame on you 😅😅😅😅😂
Lol. Now I know what you’re on about here but I reckon this is on the wrong video.
@@WanderbusAdventures yes it was my phone went tits up 🤣

If noise is an issue then gas fired heating is almost silent. Personally I am seriously considering a dickinsons marine diesel heater. They are gravity fed and give that real fire ambience. Obviously more expensive than generic Chinese diesel heaters but no more expensive than proper diesel heaters from proper engineering companies such as erberspacher, webasto etc (little hand grenade for the Chinese heater fanboys there, 🤣).
That’s true, gas certainly is quieter. We just wanted to reduce it a little, and we’ve noticed the pitch is lower too which is good for our ‘neighbours’. That diesel boat heater looks interesting too, a potential alternative to a wood burning stove
