i purchased the hcalory ss2 diesel air heater. the controller has auto on and auto off. also can set it to Fahrenheit. So you just set a temp. The heater goes on and then ramps down once its up to temp. then it shuts off. then back on.
This setup definitely needs an inching function, to fire your relays only for a few seconds, to avoid that situation like if you hold the power button too long. BUT, it gave me an idea *how* to use Sonoff smart relays to switch the heater even remotely, so thanks a lot.
Yes it could definitely be improved, another thought was wire separately to the remote. I bought these for a different project so I was just making due with what I had

Nice job. The glow plug power is actually programmable. It's set to 85 watts by default, but many have said it will run fine at 35 watts, with the benefit of prolonging the plug's lifespan. In a limited mAh setup like yours, you'd probably benefit from playing with this setting. It's the "pf" in the settings menu. 1=35w, 2=40w, 3=45w, 4=80w, 5=85w, 6=90w.
That’s interesting I wasn’t aware it’s changeable. Although I’m afraid of cold combustion temps causing sooting with the thermostat set up, my thought is quicker it’s hot the better?
@@JoshsJettas You're right about that, and the glow plug also runs on shutdown I believe to keep the little screen clean, but I think 45w would still make it glow almost white. I guess it's something you'd have to test by pulling the screen out after a few burns.

Im prettt sure someone else had posted that issue here too, there must be different variations of this display some are okay with a constant on/off and some aren’t. A timer relay wired in should take care of it

It doesn't make sense to use a thermostat on this kind of heater especially if it's being used in a vehicle. There would be a waste of energy starting it up again once the inside temp of the rig drops too low (and it will).
Waste of energy? Like battery energy? It’s the same as your house thermostat, you don’t just let your furnace run 24/7 and crack a window when it’s too hot do you? This set up works awesome, I can get 10 days out of a tank now vs just running the heater 24/7 and only getting 2.5 days.
Pretty cool setup if I was to do this which I use in my jetta wagon by the way. I would use the remote, I haven't gone down this rabbit hole yet but did want to automate this heater somewhat. Maybe holiday project if I finish some of the others. Jetta tdi needs so maintenance first.
There’s always something to do, im just working away at deferred maintenance on my Touareg. I’m really liking the bureck remote to keep it at a set temp. The heater itself does have a timer so you can get it to kick on at a certain time but people say sometimes the clock gains 5 minutes a day so that kinda throws a wrench in that, whereas the bureck keeps time and has up to 4 timers. How do you plan on mounting it in the wagon?
@@JoshsJettas yes sir always something. Touaregs are nice thought about getting one. I have basically took one installed it in the typical harbor freight case and run it into the window. I'd show photo but can't post it here. I used instalation board in window to pass through the heat.
My Chinese diesel heater doesn't have a remote. Is this my only option unless I change the controler and motherboard. my control panel looks the same as yours. I like the amount of control you have with your system. Oh, could you connect a house thermostat the same way as yours. I'd like to do this modification for in my van. Thanks for sharing 👍

Hey Josh, great video. That concept u used is what I want to do with my LifeP4 batteries.. eg/ turn off @ 13.3 or .2, then turn off @12.2 to or whatever the favourable min voltage is. Is there a PLC about that can achieve this? Power Supply 13.8v 35A. Cheers!
This is interesting - What I want to do is power off the unit safely when my mains-based 12V power has an outage - It'll still run on battery for a while but eventually it'll suffer a hard stop when the battery is drained. I had this happen but I was standing right there and saw it, so I gave mouth-to-mouth to the air intake to cool the combustion chamber, and quickly alligator-clipped on a secondary 12V source and powered it on, then off and it did its cooldown properly. So it didn't get damaged. I'd rather not have to give it another BJ.
I assume you want a relay to shut the heater off at say 12v instead of the battery killing it at 11.5v? Are you using a cordless tool battery to power it? I have no experience with it but try a xh-m609.
Problem with the two devices is if you get out of sync as you said. That's kind of a big problem... Another youtuber had a similar scheme, with the same problem.
I ran it for a month and had 3 instances where it messed up if I remember right, and once was self inflicted from running the generator. I think ideally it should be wired separately to the remote on and off switches or use a timer relay inline, issue with that is then you need to adjust your time to make sure your heated space has cooled down/warmed up enough
I don't understand how you can apply a momentary impulse...the relay stays on and simulate a long button press..in this way the heater enter in some option menu...
So this heater is now 2 years old and they seem to update/change controllers frequently. Mine I can hold as long as I want, there’s a seperate button for menu. That being said there was another recent comment that they just bought a vevor and it does what your describing. I timer relay will be needed in your case.

As in a a thermostat that cuts power to the display? That’s not what you want, Since this is wired to the on/off it goes through the required pre/post glow plug and fan cycles as required. I made a second video using the Bureck cd thermostat, extremely simple to set up and use and saves wiring.

I’m planning on posting a video tonight on it, I went with the corded version. $50usd plus $5usd for shipping came out to $78 cad. Shipped with usps/Canada post and didn’t have any duties.

Not sure if the code Aaron runs is open source or not. Besides that, the particular heater I bought is not compatible with his rig. Red remote. :(

I’m not much into electronics but I’m good at researching solutions to my problems, I had planned on going with arduino but that learning curve was pretty steep. Maybe one day I’ll find some time to play around with coding.

Yeah I looked into that one first, but it wasn't compatible with my remote.
Then this is a great alternative. It does need to be baby sat to a certain degree but it works well

Why not just remove the internal thermistor add two wire and fit it externally??.

All you need to do is set both stats to the same temperature.
Set mine up , there are a few quirks , but it is so nice having the heater cycle , and I am certain it will save gallons .
Yeah it’s by no means perfect but it definitely saves fuel

W1209 on amazon, fairly inexpensive and some can come with a case which I regret not getting.

After you trying to implement a low volt disconnect? Victron battery protect would do that. Or a voltage triggered relay opening an isolator relay.

I did exactly the same thing just once in a blue moon doesn't shut off but i had to do a delay switch so it stays on for a couple of seconds

This was a temporary set up while waiting for the bureck, apparently mine had some issues at the border
