Mom was a chorus girl .. Moro Landis dancer from 1951-61.. Really, the golden era of the Riverside. Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney, Danny Thomas, and many other headliners. And Im pleased that you rattled off many of the other entertainers that mom worked with. The Golden had some of the best acts as well, according to my parents.
I am happy and glad that this hotel was saved and restored and it is part of our history and culture of the state of Nevada and Reno and the United States States.
Loved the older Reno of the 70s and 80s. Was in the Riverside on its last night of operation ignorant of what was happening, found out the next day. Great memories of Fitzgeralds, Nevada Club, Mapes, Harold's Club, old Harrah's with its silver Pace Comet slots! Now I spend my time pushing buttons on video poker machines in Laughlin, just not the same!
I’m from the south and really love history and exploring. I live in Reno now and have enjoyed watching your videos, learning about the area. Quality educational information and the way you present it is top notch. I really hope your videos can help with historic preservation. Thanks, and keep them coming!
My step dad told me Jesse Beck comped the military for rooms and food. He was U.S Navy for 22 yrs. Every trip he made to Reno , Jesse Beck handed him hotel room & all the food and drinks he wanted. He said she was a great lady. ❤
My uncle was the casino manager at the Riverside, though I’m not clear from what years. I remember as a kid meeting him with my dad for breakfast at one of the restaurants past the pool that rested where the shipping containers are now. Oh the memories of being a kid in Reno.
I've had the amazing blessing of living in the lofts for about three months over the 2018-2019 holidays. The interior is still stunning as many of the artists use the walls of the hallways for displaying their own art pieces. The tenants are definitely as eclectic as you might think and every one of them has a different, beautiful story. I would imagine that if you caught someone exiting the back doors - who didn't work for Wild River or were part of the actual Sierra Art Gallery, they'd gladly take you on a tour of the inside. I won't drop names of tenants though as I preserve their right to privacy. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for another excellent video! From 1907 to 1920 the Riverside was also the station for Louis Berrum's Interurban electric trolley that took passengers out to the Moana Hot Springs resort.
Jesse Beck at on time. Great accommodations, fine dinner club and very clean. BUT then it started downhill. Like the MAPES. Gone and nothing but memories. More old downtown Reno history.
Growing up in Reno in the 50s and 60s I remember the Riverside well. I watched the filming of MM from the near by Court House. Thanks. I hope you do the Mappes.
Another great video. Thank you. Sad to not see the Mapes on the other side of the river. What a colossal eff up that was to implode it. For what? Nothing! Imagine if there was a combination of a high end boutique hotel and luxe condos in that building with the Sky Room still rocking. Short sighted foolishness that it's gone.
We tried to save the Mapes, we really did! but the city was dead-set on getting rid of it for the land. And here we are. I don't care what they call the plaza, i still call it the Mapes Plaza so people don't forget the Mapes.
@@Dr_Bombay Agree. I remember that there was a strong effort to save it. And the city has done nothing with the land. I remember some oily, little influence peddler was trying to build a "Bugsy Malone" (horrible kiddie movie from the 70s) themed casino. Thankfully, that never happened.
Really glad the algorithm introduced me to your channel. Born and raised in Reno and have always been interested in the colorful history of my home town. Hope I catch you out someday so I can buy you a pint. Keep up the great work
Good Googly Moogly, man. You’re in so many areas that I commonly frequent. I can’t wait for the day to run into you in the wild and shake your hand in appreciation for your wonderful content on Northern Nevada.
Wow. Born and raised in Reno. I knew a few of those owners: Wingfield, Jesse Beck, Pick Hobbson, I remember how Bill Harrah really wanted that property but had no idea of the trade going on, And Fitzgerald?? I never knew. Fascinating video. Back when Reno was tiny (maybe not named yet) and transportation was slow, the Truckee Meadows contained a number of small villages like Glendale, Wedikind, Holcomb, Lawton Hot Springs & Steamboat (did I miss a few? :). Also I remember Spanish Springs as being only a couple of Trailer parks and of course Spanish Springs Ranch. I had a friend (Last name Rosasco) who I believe had some ownership of that property. Evidently Don Rosasco was also an investor in the Palace Club (with the garish huge lit sign :). Just reminiscing. Thanks for another awesome video about our area. I now live about 30 miles from Reno. If you like craft beer, check out McHoppers in Fernley as they have a bunch of home brews (not a beer drinker myself :). Cheers
even though i was around when the Artists' Lofts were conceived and built, i had no idea how many owners the Riverside had been through before that. I could only name four or five! Also: gotta love a good blooper reel. Cheers!
Worked at the Riverside when Jesse Beck owned it. Great lady to work for. Elevators were still the old crank type. Was commandeered one night to operate one when the regular guy didn't show up. Having NO experience, I could't level the floor of the elevator with the floors of the building. Guests were terrified.
Great stuff. Love the history of Reno. I had occasion, as a young man, to work at the Riverside as a musician backing several different acts that were playing there. Saw your video on the 40 mile desert and liked it too. That's why I clicked on this video. Keep up the good work!
You brought back memories. Back in around 1963 our banjo band, the Levee Loungers, from the Twin Cities, MN, played the Riverside,. We were invited back the next year. We were not big name but we sure enjoyed the gig. Also visiting other spots when many places had entertainment. I recall seeing Earl Grant perform. I liked Reno then, and again about eight or nine years ago when I spent a month in an eclectic RV park nearby and biked along the Truckee river. To repeat, great memories. Now 90 years old and retired in Arizona. Nice video, well done. Thanks.
I just stumbled on your videos, I could not hit that subscribe button fast enough, I’m a huge history fanatic, and the truckee meadows is just dripping with it, I’ve been all around to most of the places you showcase, I did the emergency radio back up for the pony express re ride events for a few years and got some real nice access to some stations between Ibapah Utah and Buckland station, places normally off limits to the public, you should do a video on the California trail going up and over Donner pass, there is swales and ruts still visible and maybe one on the Train tunnels above Truckee, you still can go through them. Love your videos.
This is such a great video, thank you! I would recommend your channel for my out of state friends/clients looking to relocate here. It's always good to learn about the city you're going to call home.
I grew up in Reno and have inklings of memories of some of The places you visit. But I am shocked of learning of some places like the pownings additions. I have never heard of them. I lived in Reno from 1973 (8 yrs old) to 1995. And rode my bikes with my friends all over the city from sunup to well after dark! Thanks for your channel I appreciate being able to go down memory lane once in a while. 2 places I’m curious about is Wedekind and the old parklane mall site. I grew up on Wedekind road for 1983 to 1982 and never realized that road once led to an old mining site/town nor did I know it even existed until a couple of months ago. Thanks for your videos! Keep em going!
Can you do an episode on Pioneer Citizens Bank? I visited them in 1982 on IT matters. My guess is that they were the last vestiges of the Ranch/Cowboy culture. But that is only a guess because I really don't know anything about it other than a TV show that era.
Another great video, I am excited to be back in Reno for a visit starting next Tuesday, Last Time I was in town, I ran it to you on the river walk when you had your pup doing some filming. Your video about the fall colors in Reno is how I found you have not missed a video since. Keep up the great work

I recently watched one of your videos showing a lot of the Reno celebrities homes. One home in particular, you knocked on the door and asked to view the home/property. You said the homeowner told you to go pound sand! Well I'm sure after viewing your long haired, greasy, shaggy unkept ponytail had a lot to drive her her decision! I agree! The Mapes was a classic! Our city 'leaders' have ruined the historical charm of Reno. Handing out building permits like candy at Halloween.
