Remember "The Lemon Tree?" And "Rod's Shy Clown?" How about Jack Joseph's midnight show from "The Waldorf?" Remember when "Moby Grape" played at the convention center? James Brown played there too. The "Little Wal" when it was downtown. The 'fabulous' "Grotto Bar" which is now a casino. Wow! Great stuff! Keep up the good work! One more - The Greenbriar Bowling alley in Sparks. All the clubs and places I used to hang out when I was in college.
I love your videos of Reno . I've been visiting there since the mid 70's . So many cool places to visit . Recognized the guitar player right away at the end of the video .
Watching this video makes me realize how much I missed concert music wise in my life! My burning question is: your band’s song at the end looks sped up but it doesn’t sound sped up and yet the words match the mouth. How was that done?
Thanks for asking! I patterned this video after the Guns n Roses video "Garden of Eden". It's done by slowing the actual recording of the song down 50%. The band plays to the song in this slow, sludgy time as the camera rolls. Then the video itself is sped up 50%, and the original song is added. In this way the motions and the vocals stay in sync, but looks sped up.
The Grand Ball Room was my hang out and when it would close we would go across the street to Bishops. After Bishops closed we would head over to the Peppermill and eat breakfast.😅 Those were the good ole days 😂
I worked for Starsound Audio in the early 80s. Remember setting up for Pablo Cruise with a fellow named Mel. That upstairs office had a glass topped, coffee table with a Giant 24" Hartly Sub woofer as it's base. A few shows I remember: Livestock - Doobie bros, Journey (orig without Steve Perry), The Guess Who. Delmar - Soft white underbelly (Blue Oyster Cult incognito), also a Carlos Santana sit in under some band's name. Lawlor - Hewey Lewis, Pretenders, Stevie Wonder (in the round :), Phil Collins. Centennial Colosseum - (was crew for) J. Geils and Fleetwood Mac. Also saw, Jethro Tull, Bread, Chicago, Black Oak Arkansas, Rare Earth, Guess Who (again). Reno/Sparks Convention - Chicago, Yes... I'm sure I've forgotten many :). Other odd things I remember: I was sound provider for some Punk shows at Skating Plus in Sparks. These included Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, DOA, Sevin Seconds and many more. There was a bar called "Driftwood Lounge" in Sparks that had Gary Pucket & the Union Gap. Thanks for the memories!
Great stuff ! thanks! Can add that I remember in 2004 Prince played Lawlor and Paul McCartney was living up in Tahoe that summer and he was in the audience for the show.
Such great videos! I have two content suggestions. The history of boxing in Reno and the history of the River Inn. Ive lived here since 1978. Thank you again!
This is so cool. I used to play @ Del Mar back in the 80s and early 90s. Shea's next door was the 7:14 club after hours. Telesis was the band. John Lipka (RIP) was the singer I played guitar. Man I miss those days and that place. Thanks man, I mean it.
Great video, but Max Volume is incorrect. The first hard rock show at Lawlor Events Center was Kiss. It was in January 1984. The Scorpions show with Bon Jovi was in April 1984. I was at both of these concerts. Both were excellent. Thanks for the great video
A couple of other places I remember being briefly popular: Zaps (Zapps?) at Kietzke and Moana where a security guard beat the crap out of a football player. I can't remember if he was just seriously injured or killed. There was also Doc and Eddies in both Reno and Sparks. Also there was a country music bar/club on Oddie Boulevard close to where a 24 hour pizza place called Bojo's. I may be mistaken but I believe the owners of Bojo's also owned Pizza Oven which was located in the same area as Mayfair Market right across the street from the Eldorado and behind a Chevron station.
Hey! I was at that Pantera show too. Chis Payne was at Z Rock then brought them onstage and said no stage diving. I was the only guy to stage dive and some girl. I got moshed on top of pretty good until someone helped me up. It was called Limelight back then after Grand Ballroom
Hey Steve Richard here...1989 Easy Street I saw my first show here in town, I saw Monster Magnet and Corrosion of Conformity, also saw my first Mosh Pit. Del Mar, Great white, I actually photographed them with Max before the show. Kansas, Lover Boy, Robin Trower, and others. Many of the shows at the Grand Sierra Queensryche. I saw Dishwalla at the Little Wall, and I had dinner with JR Richards at the bar. I saw Type O also, Tool at the Livestock, and Sevendust at Stoney's. Did you miss the Oasis and the Rock place in downtown, south of Fitzgeralds, the alley entrance??? I saw you there for a few shows. Pioneer I saw Candlebox and Creed. BTW, Creed played the Oasis also. Good show bud! Oh and I saw Robert Plant solo with Joan Jet , also Airplane at Lawlor and Metallica in the round, around 2003?
Oh my misspent miscreant youth!!! Saw that Type O show at Fallout, also there I saw Clutch and the Offspring, and Face to Face. Sevendust at Del Mar. That same Anthrax show in the basement.(John Bush on vocals at the time)....memories
Hey Steve, great video my friend ...so many more places in town. Max is a wealth of information. Will you make a part two? Knuckleheads Bar.. New Oasis.. Sierra Stix (which is just a concrete slab now)... just to name a few. I would be surprised if our bands didn't cross paths back in the late 90s!
I thought about New Oasis but I was already short on time. Knuckleheads! Played there several times. Sierra Stix too - we shall see about a part two! Cheers!
I was there for the And Justice for All tour, '89. Me and a buddy snuck in. We were 18 and broke lol. My first concert at Lawlor was in '84 when an unknown group named Bon Jovi whose song Runaway had just hit the airwaves, opened up for the Scorpions on their Love at First Sting tour. Another memorable show at Lawlor was in '90 when Judas Priest came back to town after their infamous trial here for their Painkillers tour. Can remember Rob Halford coming out on the stage riding his Harley. Then proclaiming how it was great to be back in Reno because they wanted to be here, and not because they HAD to be here.
I use to work for the Fallout Shelter (Upstairs was the Alley Club owned by an amazing woman named Shelly if I recall she also owned Bad Dollys on 4th). I worked that TON event. lol Nope there was another entrance that lead into the department store. The FOS was operated by someone who I don't remember the name of but he ran the reptile zoo in the basement of that building and would do music on the weekends. The FOS also hosted a little unknown musician a little while before the Typo O show by the name of Marilyn Manson. There was a riot there at the Fallout because the manager saw how good a Rave went he decided to host a "Black Rave" with Rap all night long and a massive fight broke out and a few people were hurt. Shout out to Brad from Roller Kingdom who was there that night and was a massive hero.
Ok, Ok, Mister Know it All has to chime in. The Reindeer Lodge halfway up Mt. Rose Highway - The Reno Livestock Events Center at the fairgrounds- the old gym at UNR on Virginia. I’m dating myself with these, but in those strange years between the ‘60s and ‘70s those were THE places. Bar none- the best concert I ever attended was Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen at the old UNR gym.
I lived in Reno from 1982-87. I was a bartender at Harolds Club casino. Great memories. Do you know what happened to the gun collection they had? It was very impressive. Also, They had a 1949 Buick "Woody" station wagon covered with silver dollars. They used to park it out front. Wonder who's garage it's in now? I hope it's in someone's garage. Lol. Also, they filmed a movie at Harolds Club in 1955. It's called 5 Against the House. It starred Guy Madison, Brian Keith and Kim Novak. They played college kids that tried to rob Harolds Club. It's a great flick because it shows the Club (and Reno for that matter) at the height of it's hey day Man they really packed them in back in those days. And it shows the Roaring Camp bar in all its glory. Sorry Don't mean to ramble. I just have so many great memories of Reno in the sweet days of my youth! Oh and this video is about the music. Apologies. I saw Bo Diddly at the Nugget. Paul Revere and the Raiders and Tony Orlando at Harrahs. And several concerts at the arena at UNR. Most notably The worst concert I ever attended was Van Halen in 84 It was just before they broke up and it really showed that they weren't getting along. And I really enjoyed the Julian Lennon concert The closest I'll get to seeing the Beatles! Lol Sorry there I go rambling again. God bless Reno
Thanks for a thorough comment! The Harolds gun collection was auctioned off to the four winds. The gentleman who's company handled the auction acquired the Silver-dollar Buick. I visited it about ten years ago. I still have video of that and may do an episode on it! Cheers!
There was also Dillon's Dance Hall in Sparks, it became a rock club(cant remember the name) went to Stick, Life of Agony and Type O there and it turned to a total cluster!@#k after security pepper sprayed the crowd early in LOA's set and Type O never played.
I was at the Livestock arena for the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert on September 19, 1998. The ticket cost $22.50 and yes, the dirt floor made it a very dusty evening.
My late wife was a songwriter/amateur musician, and we went to a LOT of live shows back in the day. One of which was at the GSR when it was the Hilton (or maybe the MGM whatever), at that outdoor area they had. Which was pretty awesome, there were no bad seats as I recall. Anyway, the headliner was Bob Dylan, whom we had both wanted to see forever, but seldom did any live shows, even then. Also on the ticket: Van Morrison. Dylan totally sucked, terrible show (we saw him again a few years later at an indoor fairgrounds venue in Sonoma County, Ca. where he was even worse!) But Van Morrison blew us away! He was totally in the groove, and once or twice during his set, jets were taking off from the Reno airport and totally blasted right over the venue, so he just had the band continue playing whatever song he was in the middle of, but he quit singing and resumed once the noise passed by. Man he was awesome! Thanks for that great memory!
I know its sparks but we saw the killers in 2004 i believe at the new oasis on their first tour. It was like $2 or $3 dollars. Also saw suicidal tendencies there around the same time Megadeth played at the GSR in 2005 which was insane.
Don’t forget Blue Oyster Cult with the band America played at the Centennial Coliseum back in the day. . .Tell Max I even remember KGLR before it became KOZZ. . .
@@SteveTRYK The building literally shook and the funny thing is it was not sold out. That same year they played at a Day on the Green with an incredible lineup AC/DC Cheap Trick Blue Oyster Cult Journey Ted Nugent. A fun fact about me is I was the amateur DJ on KOZZ in the early 80’s. Every Sunday night at midnight to 1am they had a guest amateur DJ. I knew the DJ Mark Decker he worked at an audio store in town and I was big into audio at the time. I brought 2 friends with me and a 6 pack of Heineken. And of course it was albums. Up until a few years ago I still had the cassette recording of that.
Did anyone besides me attend the filming of Paul Revere and the Raiders Last Madman of Rock And Roll at the Pioneer Center? A friend of mine had a female friend who was the girlfriend of one of the band members and she gave us tickets to attend! I eventually bought the videotape but was disappointed that the roving camera footages of the audience did not include me!
Nice vid and general local music history. Good job. Some of the places I would have no clue on, as it was way before my time in town. Some of the places I’ve seen shows at, weren’t in the vid, but it’s all good. Can’t cover everything I suppose. I do remember seeing Megadeath at the National Bowl Stadium. Probably one of the worst acoustics, but cool to be at the show. Even somehow got invited to bowl a tournament in there. Never fully understood why it wasn’t really open to the general public for bowling. But I digress. With a lot of the top big names that used to roll through town for shows/tours regularly, it’s a bummer that many don’t anymore. I’ll suspect, in part, there’s not enough money to get them here (think seating/venue size plays a part).
As I understand it, touring is getting ridiculously expensive nowadays (trucks, buses, gas, labor, etc.) and the cost has to be passed along to the concertgoer in the ticket prices.
@@SteveTRYK Indeed it is. Just a bit of a bummer that, in many ways, Reno just cannot compete like it used to. That said, I’d love to pay 12.50 (with the 1.50 surcharge) for a general mission ticket to see the bands I used to. Those were the days for sure, at least looking back at them now. lol.
Altighty Then lets blow this comment section UP!!! Lawlor... Mr Big, Great White, and Scorpions. Aerosmith. Metallica. Pearl Jam. Hilton Amphitheater... Allman Brothers. Furthur Festival. Earth Wind and Fire. Easy Street...God Lives Underwater, Korn, KMFDM(joint really cleared out after Korn, got to have a beer with Fieldy during KMFDM......Theres a bunch more but this is already TLDR😂😂😂
same as the demise of the Seattle music scene , the music venue became a heaith club a condo an offiice building a restaurant because the property values changed ? ? ?? , BUt for a window in time you could see either junky shows or very amazing indy rock shows every day of the week ? ? ? i honestly do not know where you can experiece that now , It is dead now ? ? ? ? ? here but I think in places in Asia like Bangkok, Tokyo , Seol, Manila it is still like that now, SURE ! !

I love my hometown in spite of what it has become. Cheers right back to you!!!!
Thanks for the ideas! Maybe a part 2 video!
I love your videos of Reno . I've been visiting there since the mid 70's . So many cool places to visit . Recognized the guitar player right away at the end of the video .
Good eye! Thanks for watching!
The Allman Brothers and Boston also played at the Hilton Outdoor Amphitheater.
I don’t remember the Rock Shop but I do remember when it was called the Limelight.
I remember seeing Johnny Winter and Ronnie Montrose’s band Gamma.
I remember it as the LimeLight too!
Good old days for sure! Thanks for watching!
@@SteveTRYK Thank you for the great videos ❤
Hahaha remember the "Peppermill Omelette"? Good times for sure.
Love your input! Thanks and rock on!
Great stuff ! thanks! Can add that I remember in 2004 Prince played Lawlor and Paul McCartney was living up in Tahoe that summer and he was in the audience for the show.
Nice! Sir Paul!
Such great videos! I have two content suggestions. The history of boxing in Reno and the history of the River Inn. Ive lived here since 1978. Thank you again!
Interesting! Thanks for your viewership!
You missed mentioning the 1980's Paul Revere and the Raiders 2nd floor music hall by the Bowling Stadium!
Good call!!
It was called Paul Revere''s Kicks!!
Thanks for the reno history lesson!
I saw The Last Waltz at that theater when it first was showing.👍🏻
This is so cool. I used to play @ Del Mar back in the 80s and early 90s. Shea's next door was the 7:14 club after hours. Telesis was the band. John Lipka (RIP) was the singer I played guitar. Man I miss those days and that place. Thanks man, I mean it.
Awesome! Cheers!
715 club
@@James-un1dj I guess I had Qualludes on my mind..
Great video, but Max Volume is incorrect. The first hard rock show at Lawlor Events Center was Kiss. It was in January 1984. The Scorpions show with Bon Jovi was in April 1984. I was at both of these concerts. Both were excellent. Thanks for the great video
Thanks for the info!
Also, Paul Revere had a small club called Kicks that was on Center Street from the Cal Neva and later inside the National Bowling Stadium.
I remember Doc 'n Eddies!
Went there once - it was cool!
i can't believe you never went to see movies at the Keystone Cinema back in the day. I saw Missing Persons at the Del Mar. great place. miss it!
Hey! I was at that Pantera show too. Chis Payne was at Z Rock then brought them onstage and said no stage diving. I was the only guy to stage dive and some girl. I got moshed on top of pretty good until someone helped me up. It was called Limelight back then after Grand Ballroom
That show was so memorable - they opened with Domination and just blew the roof off the place!
Cool! Rock on!
Oh my misspent miscreant youth!!! Saw that Type O show at Fallout, also there I saw Clutch and the Offspring, and Face to Face. Sevendust at Del Mar. That same Anthrax show in the basement.(John Bush on vocals at the time)....memories
P.S. mis MNF with Max at the old Rico's Pizza in Carson.
Cheers my kindred spirit!!
Great to see Max Volume!
Thanks for the view!
Very cool! Cheers!
Great video there at the end man!
Well done. OIIIIIIIO
Thanks! Took inspiration for the GnR video done like that!
Saw George Carlin and Elvin Bishop touring for Fooled Around and Fell in Love at the arena before Lawlor.
Great info! Thanks for watching!
What about the Townhouse on Kietzke lane? That place rocked.
I didn't have time to run up to the Reindeer - maybe a part 2?! Thanks!
Also- the Old Mackay Stadium was the venue for a Grateful Dead concert in May, 1974. Pretty much a one off thing though.
@@SteveTRYK The Crystal Bay Club also had a lot of concerts, Steely Dan, Dave Mason .... loads of fun times.
Was it the Fieldhouse before Lawlor? I think that is worth mentioning, whatever Lawlor replaced.🤔
I lost a shoe at the Mighty Bostones show at the Wall. Wasn’t the lead singer or someone from Dokken originally from Truckee?
Your shoe is probably on the wall there with all of the other miscellaneous stuff! Dunno about Dokken... Max?
Cheers!
I saw Robin Trower at the Easy Street venue when I was on vacation in Reno. Can't remember what year.
I’m liking the channel but where did you get that pic of Anthrax? Who were the other guys in the pic with Scott Ian?
That pic was probably during their Vol. 8 phase - around the time I saw them - Rob Caggiano, Charlie, John Bush and Joey Vera.
You forgot one, THE RAINBOW. I played there in in 1983 with my band Little Sister, also played Grande Ballroom & Del Mar
Refresh my memory - where was that? Thanks!
Thanks for the story! Cheers!
I played bass in The Krinkles and we torched through Reno.
Love that band name!!
The Theatre was also one of the sites for the Goth club The Shadow Garden.
I know its sparks but we saw the killers in 2004 i believe at the new oasis on their first tour. It was like $2 or $3 dollars. Also saw suicidal tendencies there around the same time
Megadeth played at the GSR in 2005 which was insane.
Nice! I saw a few shows at the New Oasis too.
Don’t forget Blue Oyster Cult with the band America played at the Centennial Coliseum back in the day. . .Tell Max I even remember KGLR before it became KOZZ. . .
Remember KGLR was located at the Park Lane Mall -- miss Bruce Van Dyke.
One more thing....No Reindeer Lodge?????!!! I'm sure Max has plenty of stories of that place too..
We've chatted about a v. 2.0!
@@SteveTRYK Lots of concerts Reonites went to was the Square Valley Lodge as well -- so much fun!
I saw many shows at the centennial coliseum. Then lawlor event center. I saw AC/DC at the UNR old gym in I think 78.
Before AC/DC made it big! Would have loved to have seen that!
@@SteveTRYK
The building literally shook and the funny thing is it was not sold out.
That same year they played at a Day on the Green with an incredible lineup
AC/DC
Cheap Trick
Blue Oyster Cult
Journey
Ted Nugent.
Who'll replace the legends? After seeing the closing act, the circle is complete.
See who you can when you can! RIP Jack Russell, Greg Kihn.
Would have been cool to see!
I remember it as the Lime Light.
Oh yeah - forgot about that name!!
Interesting to say the least.
@@SteveTRYK
Indeed it is. Just a bit of a bummer that, in many ways, Reno just cannot compete like it used to.
That said, I’d love to pay 12.50 (with the 1.50 surcharge) for a general mission ticket to see the bands I used to. Those were the days for sure, at least looking back at them now. lol.
Cool shirt!
Indeed! A project is to get a shop live. Thanks!
Whats the story with the artillery gun at Little Waldorf?
I am not positive but it's probably representative of the Fremont cannon.
The first show you mentioned was referred to as the Great Big Scorpions tour!!!
same as the demise of the Seattle music scene , the music venue became a heaith club a condo an offiice building a restaurant because the property values changed ? ? ?? , BUt for a window in time you could see either junky shows or very amazing indy rock shows every day of the week ? ? ? i honestly do not know where you can experiece that now , It is dead now ? ? ? ? ? here but I think in places in Asia like Bangkok, Tokyo , Seol, Manila it is still like that now, SURE ! !
I roller skated at the ice house👩🎤👩🎨👩🌾🕵
Cool!
You forgot Lil Wals on Fifth St. Oh yeah, you’ve only been here 38 years! 😉
He didn't forget. It's the last place on the video.
@@juliehodges5592 that's not 5th street. It first started downtown Virginia St in 1922. At some point it was on Fifth St. It was located there when I attended UNR.
Between the time of the Ice House described in the video and when it became a strip club, it was a lesbian bar.
LMAO at disco records flying off on I 80!!!
I love the visual!
O man saw Van Halen at the Fair grounds 1977. They played on a semi flatbed. Dirt floor
You saw something special that day. I would have loved to have seen that!
Pawn , not pond :D :D
Good stories but most of these groups were not really my cuppa tea. Still playing the Beatles daily. 🤣
Beatles never played Reno or I'd share that locale first!!!!
Grand BoneRoom
So funny first spot you show is across the street from Kasa apartments that I stayed at for several months. I love your videos The last 2 minutes was the BEST
Thanks! Glad you like the video!
