Tourists see them as a novelty but what they are really doing is putting them in danger. Its quite sad really. We love Beatty no matter how many people come through and judge everything.
I first visited Beatty and Rhyolite in April of 1973, when I was 14. The bicycle club I was a member of [from San Diego] sponsored a five day-long ride through Death Valley and the surrounding area. A dozen of us rode 60-80 miles each day, exploring the same towns you show in your video, plus some you don't show. A "sag wagon" in the form of a late 50's school bus followed the group to pick up anyone who broke down, or simply crapped out because of the heat. It was a great adventure but Nevada was so different in those days before the internet made it known to the world. No more than a couple of hundred people lived in Beatty. Rhyolite was completely deserted. The Exchange Club was the only restaurant [and bar] in town. It looked as if it hadn't changed since the 1940's. We stayed overnight in the Beatty Town Hall, which was a mining-era wood frame building that has long since been torn down. I think I liked Nevada better back then, before the modern world reached it.

Holy shit! In 2021 I drove this route on a 3300 miler road trip around the seven westernmost states! I remember Goldfield and thinking to myself, “what the hell do people DO in this place?! Shut up that dumb mutt. Wtf. Kick the dumb beast outside so we can hear what these people are saying.
This was so cool. Thanks for posting
In rural Nevada, people come and go, mining gold, like shadows passing over the land.
It's cool to see more wild animals than humans everywhere.
It's amazing that you can build anywhere without permits or laws.
Yes, the mining companies left, fires burned, and many places were abandoned, but the town never truly dies nor lives,
It's incredible to see abandoned cars, buses, and houses transformed into beautiful works of art that can last forever.
Thank you for educating us and for sharing the locals' interesting stories full of hope, art and peace that money cannot buy.

Yes, definitely my preferred method of travel. Yes I have a few places written down I'd like to see, but you need to let the journey take you where it takes you :)
I'm so glad I discovered your channel.
I love how you get up and personal with residents of these obscure and very interesting little towns.
You really appreciate the locals and the local lore.

Goldfield is the County seat, people here work for the County, work for the State, commute to Tonopah, have their own businesses and some are retired.
Really cool to meet the current residents.
An hour and 30 minutes oh my goodness that’s gotta be your longest one yet 😅

You have made a fantastic video. Love the history notes. I'm originally from Reno. I consider myself a Nevadan. My father loved the history of Nevada.
Super nice lady! Great info and I love building embellishments, the metal is so permanent an maintenance friendly...looks beautiful. Wow,..Rupert is my kind of guy! You found some nice locals to enlighten you...
A fascinating town!
Great video, keep it up! The amount of art and artists in rural NV is nuts, and super cool. One of my artsy towns is Baker, NV, you should check it out. I'm not sure who runs it now, but there is a little motel with a restaurant run by a Michelin Star awarded chef who use to be in NYC but moved out to the desert. Gorgeous views of Wheeler Peak and the desert looking out into Utah. There is a crazy geologist, former professor who lives in the green mobile home right on the main road who will talk to you for hours about rocks and the geology of the area.
Yes! Places like Baker are exactly where I'm looking to go next, will check it out!
Glad you enjoyed :)
great idea to talk to old professor about rocks
Holy shit! In 2021 I drove this route on a 3300 miler road trip around the seven westernmost states! I remember Goldfield and thinking to myself, “what the hell do people DO in this place?! Time definitely forgot about poor Goldfield…” that whole drive is like driving through history’s own refuse pile, full of things from the pioneer days to almost the modern times with almost no rhyme or reason. It was one hell of an experience.
👍🏼💃🏼 Noooooo HOA's.....
And we 'recycle', desert art. 👍🏼
@@meaghankelly3887 It’s funny. When I drove through I just thought, “well this place is weird…” but of all of Nevada, I actually have wanted to return to visit! I’m not a gambler or a drinker, so Vegas is a place I just drive through, but I want to go back and just check out Goldfield, any ghost towns, and definitely spend time visiting the Ordinance Museum by the lake! The name escapes me… Hawthorne? There’s a certain bleak beauty about the Nevadan. Mojave that is love to go back and spend time exploring =-)

I lived in close by Pahrump for the last 15 years and just moved far far away. I use to hang out in Beatty and Goldfield on occasion with acquaintances and had a lot of adventures… it’s an interesting place. Thanks for getting out and walking around. Most people only show Beatty from their cars as they drive through. The Burros are safe, by the way. Where I live in big Bear, we have dozens of them.
Thanks a ton! I really wanna show what life is like in these places most people don't even know about, much less think of visiting. And wow, I used to go up to Big Bear quite a bit when I lived in LA, didn't know they were up there!

If you love Nevada history and are on Highway 50 be sure to go to the Churchill County Museum in Fallon. About 60 miles east of Reno. Interesting video. I was in Death Valley and Beatty in last April. Drove through Pahrump to Las Vegas. Going again to to California and Nevada next April too with my friend. He haven't seen Death Valley before so driving this time too through it to Beatty, but this time we continue to Goldfield and Tonopah. So nice to see these familiar sceneries. I just love driving in these rural areas and love these small towns. Then we head to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon before that we head to Las Vegas for the rest of the trip.
Me too! Have a great trip!
I'm from Pahrump. The Nye County Capital is not Toe-Nap-a it's Toe'-Na-Paw.
We went to Nevada in June this year from England and had 2 weeks of travelling around the state..... it was awesome and plan to go back June 2025 gonna definitely go to Beatty we did Death Valley so was close but will visit ! Great video 👏
We drive up to Reno from Las Vegas every year. We bring fresh carrots for the burros just in case they come up to us.
The donkeys are waiting for miners so they can carry the gold.
Don't feed them unless you go to the US park service highway 178 out of Ridgecrest going to Trona. They are wild animals leave them alone
I am loving these videos! Here in Inyo County, we pronounce Tonopah as "Toe-no-pah" , both Os are long vowels. I appreciate your historical research. I need to check your video library to see if you've done Inyo/Mono counties, especially Ballarat (the "museum"/general store has pictures of the Charles Manson family) . And Randsburg in San Bernardino Co. was the childhood home of Bishop's former favorite doctor Robert Denton and Mono County's beloved judge Ed Denton, both passed on now
Unless they are living off tourism Don't mention specific places. I been offered jobs as a security guard mentioning Ballarat just brings more theft and tagging broken glass and the biggest offences THROWING THIER TRASH INTO THE DESERT
I love your energy and enthusiasm, especially your warm social skills. Thanks for your travellogs. LOTS OF FUN!!!

Goldfield is such a trip. About 10 years ago, I was driving back from Death Valley and passed through Goldfield after dark. There's very few lights on, but you can see the shadows of all the abandoned buildings...and then I drove by the Goldfield Hotel. It was stunning to see something so big also be so dark and creepy! I've since passed through a few times and stopped to wander around and take a few photos. Definitely didn't run into the locals. They were probably like, "Oh no, not another tourist with a camera"
