My grandfather, "Sparky" Weiss moved from Detroit MI with Fitzgerald. Fitz was the book keeper for the Purple gang and apparently had cheated the gang out of money. They moved to Reno along with their families and opened up The Nevada Club. My grandfather was his right hand man and ran the club back in the day. My dad told me that when he was a boy my grandfather took him to the hospital where Fitz was recovering from the gun wounds. Dad said he told Fitz how sorry he was that he got shot. I guess Fitz got a kick out of my dad. His wife Mita attended my grandfather's funeral and my grandmothers funeral as well.

Awesome that you mentioned Gray-Reids. I remember it well. It was basically next to the Mayfair market and the Pizza Oven. Anybody remember the 76 station right across from Mayfair? When Circus Circus was built, they retained bits of the Gray-Reids foundation. The escalator that is in the middle of the casino is original to the now defunct department store (I know because as a kid I used to play on it (don't tell mom :)). Thanks for a great job at chronicling Reno's history.

10:09 my mom, Carla, worked at that house when it was Watson, Rounds and two other names I cannot remember. They sold it and moved to another historic house in S Reno. It was Harrah’s mom’s house (I believe), near the property of the large home down there. Construction has built up around the old house. My mom had a nice view of the horses down there. I had no clue the first house she worked in for Watson Rounds was also historically remarkable. She would have found that interesting. She loved her job there and the lawyer, Matt, she worked for. Thanks for making this.

Just now seeing this one on 10/23/2024. I wish I had caught this back then. There's a property, on Burns Street just east of the Holcomb Ave./S. Virginia/S. Center roundabout, where I do various types of work, where it was allegedly a prohibition era bootlegging location turned women's safety home turned private residence, currently with an online-only antiquarian book business operating in the basement.
Secondly, I own two decks of Harold's Club cards, one of which still with most of its protective cellophane intact. I'm stunned I even still have them after the life I've put myself through.
I've been here for the better part of 31 years and I know there's still a ton of old money running around here and your video highlights it without even actually saying it.
Again, wish I had seen this a year ago. Great video!🎉
