The Reno You Know - Reno, Nevada
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 มี.ค. 2023
This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno, the state of Nevada and the American west! I've lived in Reno for 38 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in history, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Reno's Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that scene here as well. I started homebrewing in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-like program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!

See 12 sites in Reno, Nevada changed by FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT'S New Deal programs during the Depression
You can still see physical evidence of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs from back in the days of the Great Depression here in the Reno, Nevada area! Some places are abandoned, and some are still in use today. We’ll see buildings and other community improvements that were the result of programs such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). All of the things you will see were completed before World War 2 - let’s take a tour and visit 12 of them!
We'll then end up at IMBIB Custom Brews Brewery for a tasty Imperial Stout craft beer.
Thanks to Dr. Alicia Barber and Sarah Patton at the Nevada Historical Society for research assistance, and also the Guinn Center and Sierra Nevada Journeys.
Please visit our new Facebook page - follow it and see behind the scenes and hear about future installments!

Love the videos! It would be great if there was some way we could contribute a couple of bucks via youtube or patreon. Then you could buy more books and stuff with it!
Thanks - let me ponder that...
I accidentally came across this video and now I'll watch the rest! I've lived here my entire life (almost 59 years). I work in the old Washoe Med building where I was born in 1966. I'm an explorer and your videos will be helpful!
Great to have you on board native Nevadan!
I am a city bus driver. I was going down fourth Street today. I enjoy your history show of Reno and surrounding area I’ve traveled abroad. Do you have an Instagram?
Thanks for waving Hi! I have a Facebook page for the channel but not an I-gram... yet. Cheers!
Hello Steve. I love your videos. I live in Rocklin Ca and visit Reno periodically for Street Vibes ( I am also an Harley guy) and concerts. Especially at GSR. Was wondering if I might see you at Godsmack in October. Anyway, love learning about Reno. When we finally leave Ca my wife are considering Northern NV. Really like the area around Genoa.
Thanx for watching - maybe I'll be at that show - too early to tell! ;-)
I saw Marlyin Manson at The Fallout Shealter. It was terrifying.
I can imagine! ;-)
Great stuff!
Glad you liked it!
Just watched this episode and really enjoyed it. You should look into the history of the four schools built in the Spanish style in the early 1900’s. I worked as custodian in the only still active school, Mt. Rose Elementary. There were three others but only 2 still remain. The aforementioned Mt. Rose and McKinley Park which is the community center now. The story is interesting and I’m sure you’ll appreciate the history. Thanks for the work you’re doing and keep it up!
That topic has been on my possibility list! Thanks!
The cute one!
You’re doing a great job man. Super high quality and informative. Your research seems sound as well
Thanks for your feedback! Cheers!
Thanks so much for your wonderful videos. I was raised in the area and it is nice to revisit some old, but many more new places you highlight.
Thanks for checking in and commenting!
This is another wonderful video to watch and enjoy on this cold winter night, but thank you for making this night very fun..🌙
Glad I could brighten your night!
Wow, what a wonderful video to watch and learn about important history, also the timeless photos you took back in the day were wonderful to see, thank you for taking the time to do this wonderful video.. 🌴🌵🌾🌵🌵
Thanks for watching and commenting! That was a fun one to do!

Loved this video and fascinating stuff. What FDR did was amazing and the work they got done. Sadly we can’t do that anymore. Thank you for this and all the videos you’ve done through the year. I greatly enjoy what you do!
Glad to have you watching here! Thanx!
We just moved to sparks and I enjoy your videos gonna do some exploring.
Great - glad to give you inspiration!
I enjoy all your videos. I am a native Nevadan from here in Reno. Thanks Steve !!! OH and I'm with you cheers! 😊
Thanx for your viewership!!
I see from some of your videos you have some great guitars You should do one on your guitars 🎸
Thanks, I might do that some day!
Going through your older videos, and this has a lot of fascinating info. I specially liked the comparison between the Harold’s Club and Harrah’s business styles. Always wondered why it was not Harold’s Club that became a chain. I think I remember your saying you made a full feature length film on Harold’s Cub. If so, is it available?
You can find my Harolds Club documentary on eBay - I have a link in the description of many of my recent videos. Thanks!
Hey Steveo, I watch your videos all the time. Reno is my birthplace and I've never lived elsewhere. (72). Thank You for your hard work and sharing your love of history. You do an amazing job!
I thank you for watching and sharing you comments!
New location for the Reno Air Races is Roswell, New Mexico. Wonder what kind of flying objects it will attract? 🛸👽
We shall see! Cheers!
I love your videos, they are so interesting and I have learned so much about Reno. You make me love the city I live in! I actually got married in the Galena Creek Forest so it was great to learn some history about it. Please do a video about the City Hall building.
I'm glad you find the channel of value! Thanks!
I absolutely love your videos and look forward to them all the time. I've lived here all my life and never knew about those areas going up to Virginia City. My brother used to inner tube down those ditches.. I'm not sure if my mother knew about it!!😄 I watch your videos on my TV and my phone and I do usually comment. I look forward to the next one, thanks!❤
You're a long-time viewer and commenter - I appreciate you! Cheers!
I know exactly where the fish hatchery was in Verdi NV. Also, along the river right down from the hatchery there was a dam, the Essex dam. Big pieces from that dam are just laying on the banks of the Truckee. The fish hatchery is located at 860 Bridge Street Verdi NV. You can see still the brooding ponds in the back. There is also lots of information on the hatchery at the information center on Bridge Street next to the elementary school.
Great info - thanks!

I drove into Reno from Truckee on this day; 12.31.1997 as I recall. It was New Year's Eve?!
As I recall, yes! Or New Years Day.
I like watching ur videos. Very informative.
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Steve thank you for sharing so many wonderful videos on Reno and surrounding areas. I was excited to watch this one on Harrah's as I worked the Harrah's Tahoe property in the late '70s for a couple of years in the slot department and then moved to work at Harrah's Reno property in the beverage dept. in 1981 for the next 25 years. I did meet Bill Harrah in the Harrah's North Club Lake Tahoe with 5 other co-workers from the slot dept. while enjoying an after shift cocktail. Bill greased the bar for all us black and whites and walked down the bar shaking all our hands. After moving to Reno and finishing bar school I worked out at the HAC (Harrah's Auto Collection) up until the auto auction of which I still have the auction magazine and wrote in it what every car in it sold for. I felt it the collection should of gone to the Smithsonian. It was sad to see the demise of the collection but with volunteering at NAM (National Auto Museum) I to this day enjoy being around with what is left. It was a treat to meet Sherry Harrah while working the Steakhouse bar, she told me her health was not good after being bit by a brown recluse spider and passed some months later. I was proud to work for Bill Harrah!
Way cool - you worked for Bill and saw history being made! I'm green with envy - cheers!

Thanks for shining a light on these programs and showing us the actual projects, super interesting!
Great to have you here!
I really enjoy your videos! Lived in the Reno area 20+ years and enjoy finding things out about the area that I had no idea about, or had heard only a very little on. Even the change in the last 2-3 decades since I lived here or was around regularly have been dramatic and I am glad that there is still much preserved from Reno's early and even distant history!
Cool - this little town on the Truckee has a storied past! Cheers!
This is a great channel I enjoy learning more about the area I live in. Thanks
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Appreciate this video. Went to kindergarten at Doten before moving and going to Mt Rose.
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos. I even got my son to watch a couple, and my mom too! I tell everyone about you! Thank you for what you do.
I appreciate you spreading the word! Happy New Year!
Over 25 years ago I worked for an outfit that applied for AmeriCorp volunteers. As a supervisor I got to go to regional trainings that told me a bit about the CCC. But this video was more interesting because I enjoy seeing history. Anyway, I really enjoyed my time supervising AmeriCorp volunteers. The program I worked for was educational in nature. We helped find locals that would provide housing as part of their deal because the stipend was not enough for rent. So it really was a community effort to host the volunteers. I stay in touch with one lady after all these years from time to time. I think it would be fair to say she was one of many that joined not for the money, but to help with community projects. AmeriCorp had some programs back then that worked on projects like hiking trails. They lived out in the wild in tents. I’m no longer involved, so I only know that AmeriCorp still exists. I don’t much about the modern projects they fund. I will make sure to share your video with that friend from years back. She had ties to our area. She may enjoy seeing some history.
Cool info - thanx!
I didn't live here at the time it was around, but i do know enough that i prefer to winkingly call Plumas Park "Billinghurst Park," because if you know, you know. haha. but WHOA -- real Batchelder tile, in the Southside School Annex building?? today i learned something new! thanks for the great content. I lived in Reno and went to UNR as an international student from the early 2000s to 2007. The greatest time ever. We didn't have craft beers back in the day, just Breakaway , Little Waldorf and Pub & Sub. Still good times!

I love your channel please never stop! I'm watching on my phone, and you're the best, so informative interesting talented and historical. I cant get enough of these videos. You have an awesome personality and you do such a great job. Your my favorite on youtube. So enlightening. I love Reno and I have never felt so at home as I did when I lived there. I was in the midst of the weirdness on 4th as I was homeless and addicted to meth and the streets when I lived there. I have seen Reno subverted and destroyed in many ways since I lived there. I had 1000 lives worth of good times there before things got really dark and deadly. The people of Reno are some of the most interesting and amazing people Ive ever encountered in all my travels and Ive been all over this country. There is so much to talk about. I went to prison in 2017 and got out in 2019, got clean, had a kid and moved to Spokane WA, but I miss Reno/Sparks dearly and I love the historical content and value of what you bring. Your the best! Thank you sir 🫡. Much love and respect and HAPPY NEW YEARS!!🎉
You have had a full life! Thanks for tuning in!
