my 1984 mustang gt 2.3L turbo is running an amazon turbo and its been doing just fine for 6 years now, nothing wrong with a cheap turbo if you get the right ones, sometimes there are brands out there that really are good and cheap.
I've been running a GT45 turbo on my 5.3 for over 2 years now, it makes 14.5 pounds of boost by the end of first gear, holds 14-15 psi through second and third, which makes about 700hp reliably. It made even more boost before I put a bigger wastegate, hitting 18-19 psi easily, I don't feel comfortable running that much boost but that turbo will definitely supply it. It works great, I'll probably just put another amazon one on if it ever goes out.
I feel like most other turbo on stock car mods usually need to upgrade the fuel pump, and injectors in order to get an AFR that works with the increased boost. Would that have helped here?

Wow, what an epic effort. I felt so bad for everyone that put in all that work. In the U.S. we have two versions of the PT Cruiser Turbo (a 180hp and a 220hp). I couldn't help but wonder if you could not have imported one of the stock turbo drivetrains, it might have been easier than fitting that turbo kit to the smaller engine. Great job overall!
Really late reply I know but I couldn’t help it. Importing is expensive as all hell when it comes to engines because it’s all about the weight and size. I considered doing it to get the 1.4L from a Chevy Spark to drop into my Vauxhall Viva for a laugh since the Viva is literally a rebadge that’s only sold with a 1L but the sheer cost of trying to get one of those over here would cost nearly as much as the car itself, not including labour to fit it and make it run. I’d imagine even factoring in labour cost for that PT Cruiser, it still likely worked out cheaper than trying to source and ship an engine in from the states. Unfortunately importing is not as cheap as most of us wanna believe… I wish it was 😂
The problem (well, one of the many,) with the PT Cruiser is that they designed it on computer for minimal clearances, to the point that that they actually had to stop production a few months in, just to practice assembly. Prior to that, they were turning out only about 1/4 as many per day as they had planned.
From the L and K cars all the way up through this, that was the design intent on these cars... the driveway mechanic would almost never need to mess with two things; the exhaust manifold and the starter. Everything else was out front or on top, and with roomier bays (like the several Shadows I had) they would absolutely spoil you with access. They are literally the only cars I've ever touched where changing the oil filter gave you two easy choices... reach up or down. You could simply lean over the grille and reach the filter from the top. Plugs and distributor were front and center, stand there and literally look straight down the plugwell. Needs carb/FI work or some other sensor? Right on top, even if the vacuum tubing was a bit in the way. Even the O2 sensor was plainly visible on angle past the brake booster (US/LHD obviously). Starter and exhaust work though, was guaranteed to be hours on your back with arms straight up, blocking your own vision in the little slots between the K member and engine or firewall. Miserable, but just those two items. I changed a head gasket on one and just undid the collector and left the exhaust connected to the head, access was that bad.
p.s. the PT really, REALLY needed Audi-style 'service positions'.... if the grille, radiator support, and radiator were to come out as a unit, life would be a breeze for a PT mechanic. Also failed to mention the need for a face shield when doing exhaust manifold work, things are shaped to send every single speck of debris you generate straight down into your eyes.
well to be fair the turbo pt makes 220 at the crank so probably close to 190whp so there really only around 20hp off. 20 years go ii had a 420a eagle talon which is same motor as the non turbo py cruiser i made 180whp at just 5 psi using ebay turbokit no tune as it was a FMU setup, then i went up to 9 psi and finally broke ring land after a few years of abuse. they never say what boost level hes running and the fact hes only making 170whp tuned does not seem right unless hes running really low boost just to be safe, btw these 420a engines weakest link are the ring lands and they are extremely fragile and prone to breaking under detonation
My mechanic warned me that the waste gate on my Mini Cooper JCW Clubman was going and when it failed I knew I could not pay the more than $3500 dollars he wanted to replace the turbo. To my surprise I bought a new turbo on Amazon for less than $250 and oil supply line for $20. That new turbo looked as good as the original and it is installed and running just fine.
props that you actually went engine management instead of somthing like FMU with SAFC, most would cheap out here and run FMU meaning no timing can be changed and this tends to be a terrible recipe for obvious reasons.
Depends on the trim level you got out here in the states. The pt got the detuned na engines on the lower trims. But the top of the line got the same engine as the dart srt4.
My dad had the turbo 2.4 PT with the auto trans. It was pretty peppy honestly, but the 4-speed transmission didn't like keeping it in the powerband. It'd give a big whack of power at above 4000rpm though.
The PT was one of the first, if not THE first mass produced car to be designed entirely in CAD. Which means they were able to package things together in a way that was previously unheard of. It had the tightest engine bay possible, and therefore basically zero extra room for anything.
I SO wish I’d heard of TRS performance sooner when I started my mx5 1.8 supercharger conversion. I couldn’t find anyone but one tuner willing to to take my money to tune it and even then it was utterly hopeless 😢
You bought the turbo kit for upgrading the US-spec PT Cruiser and or PT Cruiser GT. It was a PT Cruiser with the factory turbocharged EDT engine from the Neon SRT4. The EDT/EDZ used that bolt pattern on the manifold. You guys likely have the 2.0L ECC engine, as the EDZ non-turbo variant of the 2.4 never made it overseas afaik. The ECC 2.0L was the export engine for Europe an was entirely different from the EDZ.

I thought the intrepids and lhs was the first ones. Still Chrysler products but predated the pt cruiser by 5-6 years
TRS seem really cool and good at what they do. Great advertisement for them.
But no matter how much you polish a turd, it’s still a turd.
Detonation and pre-ignition aren't the same things. Detonation occurs after the spark, or even after pre-ignition.
Got a bit flustered on Video unfortunately, it's all a bit of fun.
Does Overdrive mean Donut in the UK?
Right! They literally stole everything from donut
From the content to the thumbnail.
"lots of noise and nothing is happening"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just to safely enjoy the moment ☺️☺️☺️
I did make around 350whp from 1.8l engine with that turbo.
So for that cheap it did worth it.
It’s just that this is not the right car for it😃
There is a common theme with these videos. 1 day of failure, followed by leaving it with the mechanic for a week to find its all finished.... 🤦🤣
New idea for PT Cruiser : they should make the paint job extremely metallic
Richard is impressive! Seems like a cool fella as well
That Clio looks awesome btw!
I know this must've been expensive. good job guys
Downpipe into the intercooler? Ok, I'll keep watching.
Peter at TRS remapped my Focus ST. He did an amazing job, I'd highly recommend TRS
There was also a PT Cruiser GT, which had same 2.4L turbo engine as the Neon SRT4, I really want one of those for the sleeper potential
I have a 2005 PT GT with the SRT4, love it, only 54600 miles on the engine!
I SO wish I’d heard of TRS performance sooner when I started my mx5 1.8 supercharger conversion. I couldn’t find anyone but one tuner willing to to take my money to tune it and even then it was utterly hopeless 😢
I know this is an ironic funny build but I have to admit that intercooler setup is very unironically cool
The ECC 2.0L was the export engine for Europe an was entirely different from the EDZ.
the wastegate was open the whole time
That PTR badge has to be the best upgrade a PT Cruiser has ever had in it's life
We did it cheaper than that! A scrapped BMW N20 twin scroll and a whole lot of welding. We successfully turboed our PT for under $400 USD total.
Richard did an awesome job regardless of power gain
You are my favorite car channel, besides engineering explained (would love to see a nerd collab)
