"Penny for the guy" is a tradition for Bonfire Night in the UK. The Guy is an effigy made of straw and dressed in clothes that is burned on the bonfire (possibly an effigy for Guy Fawkes or for the Pope depending on your politics/tradition). Children would make their own Guy and go around the streets with it asking for money before the bonfire- hence "penny for the Guy"
It is guy Fawkes that we burn on the bonfire sometimes there’s other effigy’s we did the conservatives in some places a few years ago and the pope has also been done a lot but the guy is guy Fawkes
Original comic book was written by Alan Moore (Watchman) from 1982-1985 during the Reagan and Thatcher administrations. If you were around during that time period all of the story makes sense. It even makes sense today.
Yes the dominoes were real. And better yet, the guys who set it up did not intend that one domino to stay standing, but Hugo Weaving remained in character and picked it up. Beautiful imperfection.
I know it's not really on brand for this channel to tackle politics. That's one of the reasons I watch. A nice little escape, but it's super interesting to see you guys tackle some heavier themes. Don't shy away from this sort of thing in the future I really enjoyed this!
That scene where Diedrich does the Benny Hill style sketch comedy is exactly how I think the real Stephen Fry would react to a totalitarian regime in the UK as well, to be honest.
"... We have guns." "No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer be standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded." Those lines, followed by a scene of people who should have worn brown pants realizing he was right. It a masterful use of stylized, slow motion violence to tell a story. Seeing the fear creep into Creedy and the secret police faces was great story telling. They felt powerful and untouchable because they were used to using violence and fear of all types on people who couldn't fight back. That fact that V took the mortal wounds and powered through, reinforces the statement that ideas are bulletproof. You can kill people, but not the ideas they believe in and represent.
I’m so happy you watched this film. Greg is so me, I got so emotional at that scene in the rain it’s amazing! As a UK viewer, this film is a staple watch.
I think this movie should be the definition of "Aging like wine". I can't describe how strange it feels, I saw this movie at least 15 years ago and it's like the meaning of the movie has changed, despite obviously not changing just because the times have changed so much. How relevant it still is also sort of proves its point. I wish we will reach a time when this movie won't be relevant but I highly doubt I'll live to see it
Here in Chile, a few years ago our (ex) president declared war on us. This movie is an amazing and a beautiful representation of what is anarchy. Thanks for the reaction! What a movie!
I remember when this movie was released and it got some bad reviews and word of mouth and didn't do great box office, but I thought it was very well done and highly underrated. Glad to see that nearly 20 years later it still holds up and Reel Rejects also says it's underrated. Now I don't feel like I've been in a small cult of people who appreciated this movie for all these years.
I really love this movie, hard to believe it’s nearly 20 years old. I still don’t understand why it wasn’t more successful than it was. Hugo Weaving delivers an amazing performance with just his voice and although Natalie Portman’s English accent wasn’t perfect, it’s an emotionally powerful performance. For me it’s her second best performance only behind her role in Leon. Thanks for the reaction guys.
Oh crap remember remember the 5th of November. People should not be afraid of the government. Government should be afraid of the people. The most important line in this film.
An inch. It's small and it's fragile and it's the only thing in the world worth having. we must never lose it, or sell it, or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.
Actors always want to make sure nothing covers their faces when they do performances so props to Weaving for making a whole movie with his face covered. Terrific performance.
In the comic, V was the one that blew the Larkhill up, so he chose the day. And like others have said, this work just becomes more and more relevant when time passes, it seems. Also, in the ending, all the dead people from the movie were there, in spirit.
Regardless of what you believed before, after this movie or reading books such as 1984/Fahrenheit 451, you'll never be able to look at governments the same ever again.
As stated before, Gordon didn't make it By seeing him there, mixed with the people we see his hopes and dreams still live on That's why we also see Valerie and her girlfriend, the girl with glasses and Evey's parents Only those who wished for a better future continue to live on as part of everyone else
This movie came out months before I graduated high school. I was 17, and forming my own identity and opinions about things like religion and government. I saw this in theaters and it had a profound affect on me. Even now, watching Natalie's performance during that realization scene, has me super emotional.
Good reaction boys! I always loved the lines in the opening, “But you cannot kiss an idea... cannot touch it or hold it. Ideas do not bleed. They do not feel pain. They do not love. And it is not an idea that I miss. It is a man.” So good. Also I appreciate and enjoyed your discussion at the end.
Yes, they killed Stephen Fry. The living were shown standing side by side with the dead,,, one of the most powerful scenes I have ever seen in a movie. Thanks for reacting, stay safe and good luck
Even more interesting is that John Hurt played the protagonist Winston Smith in "1984", a dystopian movie, where he was the one going against "Big Brother" and the totalitarian government, while in this one, he plays the totalitarian leader of Britain.
The coroner wasn't just "a" coroner, She seemed to be the coroner specifically for prominent members of the party. Which makes sense that they'd probably not want some random coroner they couldn't trust if the chancellor died suddenly
It certainly is unsettling how much more relevant and on the nose the subject matter of this movie becomes as time goes on. This movie came out 18 yrs ago and it was shockingly relevant then. Right now though, it's basically a mirror reflecting current day issues and trust me when I say, it's reflecting a very very clear image of the world today.
“Freedom is a fragile thing and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.”-Ronald Regan. Despite the origins of this quote it’s true. That’s why the message of this film will always be relevant. Freedom isn’t a right, it is a never ending fight to keep it.

In the last few seconds of the film, you see Stephen Fry's character, the little girl who got shot, the gay male couple who got taken in a flashback and Valerie + Rose from V's story. #1 I always remember...#2 V made sure places were vacant and only did harm to those who harmed him and others personally. V for Vengeance, V for Victory... V for Vendetta
This was my fav movie when it came out and I spent days memorizing the “V” speech when he meets Evey. I can still quote it on the spot, almost 20 years later (ew that felt gross to say ‘20 years’)
So, one interpretation of “V” without sounding overly pretentious - is how “V” was used in the European Theatre of WWII. “V” for “victory”, “V.E.” for “Victory in Europe” - virtue and the sign of peace. But imagine, the day he starts, in order to attain peace…he declared WAR. “E” - Latin prefix for “out of”. E-V… The term “underrated” is overused, mostly by those who haven’t been exposed to whatever they deemed “underrated” - like the first time a kid sees something that’s been around for 20 years. That isn’t the case in this instance. THIS movie is hardcore f*cking underrated. The acting is decent, but it’s the writing that shines. It’s one of my favs. Great movie, awesome reaction. 🤙🏾
One of the best dc movies ever. I rewatched this at the beginning of the pandemic, and it felt so much more relevant than when I was younger. This is probably the most realistic take on a “superhero” and how someone could inspire hope/change.
John Hurt was brilliant casting for the Big Brother Tyrant. He was the protagonist in the 1984 movie. I only just figured that out. 18 years after i first watched it. Fucking brilliant.

Also if you're confused at the end when the citizens were unmasking, and some characters are there you thought died, they did. Along with Dietrich, the little girl in glasses was there, Evey Parents, V's Cellmate ,who wrote to him, and her wife were there, also we actually see her dead body added to the pile in the flashback at larkhill with the Doctor. They do a close up shot on one of the bodies. Thats her. Them appearing is symbolic that V also represents them, even in death.
There are some very important changes compared to the novel: 1. V accuses people much more, blaming them for accepting the world as it is, saying they are truly at fault. 2. The virus doesn’t exist; instead, it’s simply a Cold War version of England, where fear has taken over. 3. The Voice of the Party is not killed by V. He is portrayed as homosexual and is connected to some dolls. V dresses these dolls as if they were in the camp where he was held, burning them one by one in a psychological torture. In the end, he remains alive but goes mad. 4. V's story is explained in much greater detail. Among the explanations is the cause of the fire. V was a model prisoner who helped with various tasks, and as a reward, they allowed him to grow roses thanks to the doctor’s intervention. Among the supplies provided were various fertilizers, which V used to create bombs, blowing everything up. 5. V does not fall in love with Evey; instead, the story is about how Evey represents creation and V represents destruction. Where there is destruction, creation is needed-this is what anarchy means for V. But he, born from suffering and destruction, cannot live in this new world; a creator is now needed. 6. Finally, the supreme leader is even more intriguing. He is in love with a computer and hates people. He is killed by a random person on the street the first time he tries to go out.
the lore surrounding this film is amazing. i have guy fakes face tattooed on my right hand, and its 100% because of hugo weaving in this role. his eloquence, his emotionality, the way that he brings LIFE to a rather singular character. absolutely incredible.
This is my absolute favorite movie. I love witty and sophisticated dialogue and this film has some of the best you'll ever hear. I guess it's why I love Tarantino films so much. So good.
An older brother of mine convinced our mother to allow him to take a nine year old me at the time to watch "V For Vendetta" at the theater. He pitched that learning about revolution in the name of liberal values from a movie would be educational. When we arrived at the theater, we saw the trailer for the movie from a television screen behind the ticket counter. It horrified me and I cried about not wanting to watch it. My older brother then took me to the mall instead where he bought me Pokemon merchandise.
V showed mercy while killing the Dr Delia because from his observation to all the people on the list he knew that she was the least one benefits from what happened and perhaps he figured that she has remorse for what she did, yet he will not pass it without killing her, he will only kill her peacefully without any pain. That is the most thing i liked in the movie, that V wasn't just a brainless emotionless vengeance person. He is ruthless yet has his standard way to judge how to act and carry out his plan.
I've watched a BUNCH of reactions to this movie since the 5th and this has to be the best by a long shot; EXCELLENT content and commentary, please keep it up!!

Last time I had a kid say 'penny for the guy' I gave him a penny and took the guy, he wasn't happy
It is guy Fawkes that we burn on the bonfire sometimes there’s other effigy’s we did the conservatives in some places a few years ago and the pope has also been done a lot but the guy is guy Fawkes
That's where the word guy comes from, meaning a man/person
Original comic book was written by Alan Moore (Watchman) from 1982-1985 during the Reagan and Thatcher administrations. If you were around during that time period all of the story makes sense. It even makes sense today.
@1:23:27 No, he's dead. Their faces appearing in the croud is symbolism reflecing Natalie Portman's comment regarding who was behind the mask.
Yes the dominoes were real. And better yet, the guys who set it up did not intend that one domino to stay standing, but Hugo Weaving remained in character and picked it up. Beautiful imperfection.
Quite the befitting reaction for today's date, my dear chaps.
I know it's not really on brand for this channel to tackle politics. That's one of the reasons I watch. A nice little escape, but it's super interesting to see you guys tackle some heavier themes. Don't shy away from this sort of thing in the future I really enjoyed this!
Valerie's letter gets me to this day
Its one of the most beautiful scenes in all of cinema.
This is a yearly rewatch for me, I love it so much.
That scene where Diedrich does the Benny Hill style sketch comedy is exactly how I think the real Stephen Fry would react to a totalitarian regime in the UK as well, to be honest.
"... We have guns."
"No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer be standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded."
Those lines, followed by a scene of people who should have worn brown pants realizing he was right.
This movie could not be more timely. Sheesh
Oh crap remember remember the 5th of November. People should not be afraid of the government. Government should be afraid of the people. The most important line in this film.
This could’ve came out yesterday if we’re being honest! Shows how relevant it still is today!
Basicaly the world today
Edward Norton is different. Kingdom of Heaven. He even refused to be credited.
Karl Urban in Dredd (surprisingly good film, do watch if you haven't) also has most of his face covered throughout unlike stallone.
As stated before, Gordon didn't make it
By seeing him there, mixed with the people we see his hopes and dreams still live on
That's why we also see Valerie and her girlfriend, the girl with glasses and Evey's parents
Only those who wished for a better future continue to live on as part of everyone else
It is a man.”
So good. Also I appreciate and enjoyed your discussion at the end.
It is a particularly fitting movie to re-watch today. It is like listening to a sad song when you're brokenhearted.
Yes, they killed Stephen Fry. The living were shown standing side by side with the dead,,, one of the most powerful scenes I have ever seen in a movie. Thanks for reacting, stay safe and good luck
Oh momma does this hold up, and is frighteningly more relevant than I ever thought...remember remember!
Even more interesting is that John Hurt played the protagonist Winston Smith in "1984", a dystopian movie, where he was the one going against "Big Brother" and the totalitarian government, while in this one, he plays the totalitarian leader of Britain.
Natalie portmans accent is actually pretty good , as a British person I approve
The coroner wasn't just "a" coroner, She seemed to be the coroner specifically for prominent members of the party. Which makes sense that they'd probably not want some random coroner they couldn't trust if the chancellor died suddenly
I miss this OG duo reactions together not that I mind new faces.😂
It certainly is unsettling how much more relevant and on the nose the subject matter of this movie becomes as time goes on. This movie came out 18 yrs ago and it was shockingly relevant then. Right now though, it's basically a mirror reflecting current day issues and trust me when I say, it's reflecting a very very clear image of the world today.
The comic was written in the 80s. The writer was unhappy and concerned with how the government was at that time. Things haven't improved in many ways
The worst part is that nobody listens to these movies.
You mean how media today is controlled 90% by one political party? Not just media but our entertainment and much more. I'm glad Trump won!
@@funfunfun3624 The worst part is those who listen and think that it can only happen from supposedly "conservative/christian" governments, and not leftie authoritarian ones. Like we have all over the West today. People getting jailtime for opinions or simple insults in the UK is pretty much just short of the authoritarianism in the movie. Canada, Australia, France and Germany are faring no better.
People quote all the expected lines. I’ll go with Evey’s “Every time I’ve seen this world change, it’s always been for the worse”
That's nice :)
I really appreciate you guys sticking to thought provoking discussion versus "preaching" and shaming. This is just another reason why the Reject Nation is my home. I love the content and the creative minds and hearts behind it. ❤
In the last few seconds of the film, you see Stephen Fry's character, the little girl who got shot, the gay male couple who got taken in a flashback and Valerie + Rose from V's story. Yes, they were all dead. I figured that was all just a bit of symbolism, like how they are all V and V represents all of them or something like that.
What time! Glad yall dove back into this one. This movie is on my short list of movies that revived my faith in the movie industry in the early 2000s (the others being A Scanner Darkly, Lucky Number Slevin, and Wall-E - all the ones w goofy off-putting titles lol.)
A Scanner Darkly is a fantastic movie which sadly nobody seems to remember nowadays.
Slevin is a low key banger that deserves a reaction by everyone.
Some of the character reveals at the end were dead. V spoke for them as well and it was symbolic.
Every time I watch the finale of this movie I get goosebumps and tear up, every time. It’s so frighteningly relevant.
A film that will be incredibly relevant again for the coming 4 years……
Exactly what I was thinking.
If not much longer...
Ahem, what? The USA literally just AVOIDED the government in the video by voting in the Free Speech people. And the people who will reduce the power of government. Don't take your news from Reddit, it's a hive mind and bubble.
@@-----REDACTED----- yep putting an end to the far left dictatorship

@@justinperlow9104easily the funniest skits from mtv Movie Awards.
Stephen Fry was dead along with the other deceased characters shown at the end. Them unmasking themselves in the crowd was purely symbolic.
If the letter in the cell doesn't bring you to the point of tears, there's something wrong.
I was watching and this was the day I realized I went to high school with John and miss the guy!!! Groovy dude and I’m so stoked that I get to see him doing his thing! Seriously blew my mind!
It looks like the US will also have a Nov 5th that should never be forgot.
Oh we won't forget. Or forgive.
You're dang right! GO TRUMP!
@@crimsonjedi Watch again until you understand it.
@LSMuglia if what people get out of this film is "GO VOTE FOR ONE OF THE WINGS THAT IS ON THE SAME ROTTEN BIRD!!!" y'all weren't watching the right way.
@@LSMuglia I'm sorry, what? Trump and his party are literally fighting their ass off to preserve FREE SPEECH. You just assume that because the movie depicts a supposedly "conservative/christian" government, the same sort of government don't exist under left wing rule? The entire West is suffering under leftie authoritarianism. Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Germany, etc. Free Speech is dying, and the US just made sure it will survive at least another 4 years.
#1 I always remember...#2 V made sure places were vacant and only did harm to those who harmed him and others personally. V for Vengeance, V for Victory... V for Vendetta
"Valerie's letter " is awesome. But Portmans performance for the "you cut my hair" scene was amazing
“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” Lord Acton 1887
Watching this back in the day, in the shadow of 9/11, it held a lot of the same thought-provoking threads that it still does today.
Hands down I think Natalie did a great job doing a British accent! Well done this movie is fire…works! 😂🎉 🇬🇧
This was my fav movie when it came out and I spent days memorizing the “V” speech when he meets Evey. I can still quote it on the spot, almost 20 years later (ew that felt gross to say ‘20 years’)
One irony is John Hurt played Winston Smith in the movie 1984 and was the character complete opposite to his character of Chancellor in this move.
E-V…
The term “underrated” is overused, mostly by those who haven’t been exposed to whatever they deemed “underrated” - like the first time a kid sees something that’s been around for 20 years.

One of my favourite films! The writing is insane!!!! Hugo was incredible and so was Natalie! Just an awesome movie ❤
“Almost as deep as Independence Day”… that killed me! Still laughing a minute later.
love that John Hurt is in this as well as 1984, but complete opposite roles :)
"If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution" - Emma Goldman
This movie hits hard especially given today's political climate.
Yeah we know. The leftist government controls everything. Glad we are voting Trump in.
Written in the 80s, filmed in the 2000s, and still relevant in the 2020s
There are some very important changes compared to the novel:
V's opening monologue with the Finger Men was my audition monologue in drama class to get into my high school plays
This is my absolute favorite movie. I love witty and sophisticated dialogue and this film has some of the best you'll ever hear. I guess it's why I love Tarantino films so much. So good.
Turns out November 5th was an appropriate day to post this in multiple senses.
If what I read is correct, Hugo Weaving did the V introduction in one take. How is that even possible?
One movie I can watch over and over.
He is a very talented and hardworking actor.
@@AshrafAnamSmith from Matrix😅
John hurt was perfect casting as high chancellor. He was in the movie nineteen eighty-four.
The way V is loving movies while in hiding, it seems like he was a Reel Reject.
I've watched a BUNCH of reactions to this movie since the 5th and this has to be the best by a long shot; EXCELLENT content and commentary, please keep it up!!
What they left out of the movie from the graphic novel was how Finch's vision of Lark Hill was actually an acid trip.
Remember remember the 5th of November gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot, love this movie and have a great bonfire night to all fellow brits

24:51 There are behind the scenes where the film maker mentions that this movie adaptation is a direct response to 9/11 and the Bush/Cheney government.
What does that mean? Terrorists attacking another country?
@@crimsonjediafter 9/11 the patriot act was put into place allowing the government to survey the population of the US much closer than ever before. Many people did and still view this as the first step towards a police state.
