In a cut part of the movie, with Will shooting “little Tiffany”, K tells Z that he’s the only one that got it right. So J is actually correct in shooting her
I'd argue it's still implied, given what you learn about MIB later, not assuming hostility in non humanoids and recognizing seemingly harmless threats would be what they look for in agents.
Yeah, the other aliens needed to be apprehended and have the rules explained. Little Tiffany was clearly an alien in disguise and wasn't idenfying herself as such to the authorities, which would cause them to percieve her as a hostile.

So yea, makes sense for them to delete that scene, because it is kind of obvious.
Yeah, but there's a reason a scene like that gets cut, it goes against the 'show, dont tell' philosophy. The audience has already been shown that Will's character thinks differently and they imply through his explanation and Zed's reaction that he was right about Tiffany, we didn't need to have it explained to us, it's better that little details like that remain open to the audience's interpretation.

Another example of how the 90s was seriously one of the best decades of movies, on the cusp of ridiculous CGI and great stories and new ways of filming
The guy who wrote the comics originally, Lowell Cunningham, lives here in Knoxville and in undergrad when I worked at Best Buy part-time, he used to just come in and buy camera equipment and other stuff every once in a while like a normal dude he was the nicest guy he made enough money off the comics to really never work again so he was just doing what he wanted Also, Tommy Lee is fluent in Spanish. Living on the Texas Mexico border I guess did it.
Was going to mention he was from TX. Glad to see it's already here! My own Spanish is so bad, I'm just picking it up from my Latinx soccer fans. Yo sabes palabras..pero no sabes Espanol. Yo estan estudiente malo. 😄
There is a sadly long-defunct podcast called Friends in Your Head, which recorded watch-along film commentaries done by people who were working in the film industry. Their Men in Black episode included Lowell Cunningham as a special guest commentator. He’s great to listen to! Highly recommend checking it out.
@@OfficialMediaKnightsthe make-up effects of the 'Edgar Suit' decaying over the movie was well done too. He was great as Detective Robert Goren from Law and Order Criminal Intent.
The saga of J and K continues in the second and third movies. Most of the time follow up movies aren't as good as the first but these are exceptions to the rule. ❤your reactions.
20:37 was hilarious. -Does he need sugar water again? -trying to act casual. "quick, your crush is coming!" -"act natural!" And Vincent D'onofrio's incredible physical acting. Peak 😂
The target practice scene and Jay's reasoning for shooting Lil' Tiffany is a parallel to the opening scene with Kay and Mikey. Kay's method of finding Mikey hiding amongst a group of immigrants is almost the exact same as Jay's attention to detail and reasoning for shooting Tiffany: Both aliens were using a disguise but didn't realize the context of their disguise made them stand out. Maybe not to regular, even well-trained people like the other military cadets Jay was with, but it did to Jay. They want his natural instincs, which is something that can't be trained. And showing the audience that Jay and Kay act differently but think the same is a great way to show (not tell) that they make a good team.
The comic this is based on is a lot darker too. Put it this way; J and K don't carry laser guns and neuralizers. They carry .38s and quick lime. EDIT: Also, J's assessment of "Little Tiffany" is true. In the animated show that came out not long after, the same bug-like species Edgar is tried to invade with their Queen, who used a disguise that *looks* like Little Tiffany.
men in black is another case of one of those really solid trilogies. the second one isnt as liked but it isnt necessarily bad, and the third is such a good send off and sucha good story that it might very well be my favorite of the three. if you guys watch the rest you are in for a treat.
Oh! And since y'all liked the first Men in Black film, I *definitely* recommend the movie that Will Smith stared in a year before this one. It's called Independence Day(1996).
My favourite quote of the movie (with a nice little gibe to the US Forces): "Congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of gouverment training." Oh and for the coffee drinking aliens: In the MiB animated series, you get to know, that on their homeplanet, coffee is a delicacy and only the King of their species is allowed to drink it.
@@Anthyrion still hilarious to imagine them discovering that coffee and cigs pair well together and becoming addicted to them. thanks for answering their scenes were always some of my favorite parts of the movies.
Men in Black was based on a comic created at Aircel. Aricel later became Malibu Comics, and then sold off the movie rights. A few years later Marvel bought Malibu Comics to prevent DC Comics from doing the same and getting a one-up on the comic book sales market. When the movie began production, it was through Malibu. By the time it was released in theaters, Marvel owned Malibu outright. The original credit was for both Malibu and Marvel, but subsequent video releases changed it solely to show Marvel. In reality, Marvel only ever released 4 issues of Men in Black back in 1997 as a mix of reprints and movie tie-ins. Marvel pretty much abandoned all the Malibu properties around 25 years ago. The popular theory is that the original Malibu creator contracts awarded them royalties and residuals for use of the characters and Marvel did not want to compensate them. So, while they own the IP to several properties, they are likely never going to see the light of day again. This movie was written by Ed Solomon, who co-created and wrote the three Bill & Ted films and later wrote (or co-wrote) the two Now You See Me films.
The ending is a closer philosophy and possibility of how reality works than many probably realize. Highlighting how everything is just a matter of ones perspective. Every macrocosm is just another microcosm ad infinitium. If you never seen it, look into the theory of atoms being their own universe. Boils down to 'how do we know that the atoms aren't planetary systems? The electrons are the planets, and the nuclei the stars/suns'!
I was a huge fan of Rip Torn before this movie because of his character "Artie" in The Larry Sanders Show. I had no idea he was going to be in this movie before I saw it so I got a great surprise in the cinema!
Edgar with "the Bug"running into the door, grunting in annoywnce and then opening it is one of the funniest understated moments. The scene with Frank the Pug being "shaken down"will never not be funny. The way that his eyes go all wide as he is shaken kills me, as well as Tommy Lee Jones corpsing and J's weak explanations for the dog being shaken or talking. I like the conventional effects used in the movie. Originally, the Bug was going to be a puppet(you can find images of the finished one online)but it got switched out, which is probably for the best. That final cockroach alien was pretty epic in CG. The novelization goes into a bit more. Beatrice guesses first that it isn't Edgar because it was "too nice". J. got every test right. The first was knowing the right questions(he asked why they were there and the military cadet didn't even know, so he just parroted what Z said.) The written test was problem solving, with the one table being used as the writing surface being the quickest and easiest method. And J was right about all the aliens, showing he didn't judge by appearances(scary alien vs innocent little girl. There was an MIB animated series(pretty good too, since it went pretty dark)which had some fun stuff. It ignored the movies ending and had L(doctor Weaver)as a character, while K was not neuralized. Had other members of the Bug hive come(with the Queen putting a bounty on L for killing "Edgar", her favorite)and it explains Jeebs can regenerate from his whole body being destroyed, as long as he has oxygen, he can regenerate. Frank the Pug is just a green dog with antenna underneath the fur suit, lol. The bouncing device makes me laugh every time. "A practical joke by the Great Attractor, he thought it was funny as hell." Vincent D'Onofrio trying to lean in the truck is one of my favourite moments. You should watch the other two for sure!
Omg you guys! This movie came out just before I turned 10, and it has always been one of my favorites! For that day, my dad arranged a whole MIB themed party and even got a friend of his to record a mission impossible style invite that had a "pass code" to get in and actual intercoms on our front door that night! An "alien" shooting course with nerf guns and laser tag! I'm still close to many of the friends that were there as well! Now that my dad has passed, it has remained a very special movie to me! Like the Star Wars and Back to the Future movies! So glad to join you guys for this one!
That tall alien, Carel Struycken, also played Lurch in The Addams Family 1&2... which, if you haven't watched those 2 films, that would be great for the channel! They're both so much fun!
I highly recommend watching MIB 2 and MIB 3. There's also a short lived animated series based on these films. Bad Boys 1-4, Independence Day, Enemy of the State, Wild, Wild West, I, Robot and I Am Legend are all worth watching as well. Other Tommy Lee Jones films include Under Siege, The Fugitive, U.S. Marshalls, Man of the House, No Country For Old Men and Captain America: The First Avenger
This might be completely wrong, but i always saw the bug''Edgar skin'' as getting more rigor mortis as time went on. Thats why it seemed like he had more difficulty moving as time went on. Don't know if that is a good attention to detail, but it kinda fits.
I have this trilogy on video, and now I need to.go back and watch them! Thanks for upgrading my Saturday! 😂😂😂 I won't give it away, but I can't wait for you to get through all 3 films. Terrific reaction! ❤❤❤
I had got the sense she could be pretty picky with her roles and didn't want to do the sequels, but I may have none of that right. Could also see the powers that be just wanting to keep the formula going.
Degrees of Separation: Tommy Lee Jones played Sissy Spacek's husband in the Loretta Lynn biopic, 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. Rip Torn, who played 'Zed' in MIB, is Sissy Spacek's cousin. Texans all around!
I noticed this version is censored. Jeebs was supposed to say " you insensitive prick" not "you insensitive jerk" at the pawn shop. What else did they change?
Yeah that's a classic line, very noticeable change. I thought they'd only censor it like that for the cable or even broadcast version, not streaming - I wonder what service they were on.
Wow man. Good old days. A movie from my childhood. And in the end when our galaxy is in a marble. Man This is just something else. Love your reaction guys.
Since watching Will Smith here should watch ID4 1996 Independence Day more so watch it on July 4th would most definitely make a great movie to watch that day
The existential suggestion at the end reminds me of the movie "Contact" with Jody Foster. (Which, if you haven't already reacted to, i would highly recommend.) where she says her dad always said "It we are the only life in the universe, ...it seems like an awful waste of space."
yeah, its supposed to be Insensitive prick. I looked it up and apparently netflix uses an edited version that replaces that scene with the tv edit version.
Depending on which platform they're watching it it is not unusual for some of these platforms to make edits without telling anybody. Consider if you will the edited version of splash.

A week ago, I was looking through your uploads to see if you’ve reacted to MIB and just like that, you guys drop this! You guys are amazing. I grew up on this and it’s one of my favorite comfort movies now.
None of the others were EVER in the running. J was the only candidate being considered. Every last bit of it was part of the assessment. The 'written test' was a test of resourcefulness and use of what is available because an Agent has to be totally autonomous and solve problems on their own with what they have on hand. He was able to make the broken pencil work without even mentioning it and was the only one to bother to note there was a TABLE in the room and utilize it. The 'shooting test' was actually a test of cool-headedness, observation, and clear thinking under high pressure. Because Agents, emphatically, do NOT just go around poppin caps in alien asses. They have to deal with scary aliens, constantly, and be able to recognize when and IF that scary alien is actually a threat or whether it's just kindly little Gobbendorb who looks like he's about to eat you every time he smiles but is really just a harmless little grocer who wants to live his peaceful little life like anyone else. Aliens aren't 'the enemy', they're just people like anyone else, and J demonstrated clearly that even in that moment under all that pressure he kept that in mind, considered the visual cues aside from just superficial assumptions, and actually did THREAT ASSESSMENT on the targets BEFORE firing his weapon. As a result he was in fact the only one to pass the shooting test because out of a bunch of frightening but harmless aliens he properly assessed the ACTUAL THREAT. That's right... he was either SUPPOSED to shoot Tiffany, or else hold his fire having not assessed any targets as a threat. The presence of all those other super impressive decorated fancypants was EXCLUSIVELY just to heavily intimidate and ramp the pressure up HARD on J to see how he performed under that much stress, because an Agent has to be able to do those things under the worst kinds of stress imaginable. J passed both tests with FLYING COLORS.
When I had the original VHS of this film, Jeebes said “you insensitive prick” not “you insensitive jerk”. Not sure if this is a regional difference or something that’s been added to future versions, but it’s something interesting to note.
12:06 I remember seeing the behind the scenes for this movie a while back and I fell in love with the amount of thought and lore that went into the guns. K's "Deatomizer" is an "intense microwave focuser". Not your typical ray gun. When you shoot someone with it, it gives them an intense burst of microwave radiation so they "pop" like they were stuck in a microwave for too long. Which is why Jeeb's head explodes like that. (I would not like to see what it does to Humans 😬) If you look at the scene I timestamped again, there is no bullet or energy blast either. Because radiation is invisible!

Favorite movies with him are The Cell and Happy Accidents.
True he's a good actor no idea he Pyle at first.
@@merrytunes8697, he is wild in The Cell!!
I lost it when denice said "is he OK, does he need sugar water" 😂😂😂 she looked so concerned
As many others have said Vincent D'Onofrio is stellar in this. If the Academy ever bothered to reward outstanding comedic roles he deserved an Oscar for sure.
Another example of how the 90s was seriously one of the best decades of movies, on the cusp of ridiculous CGI and great stories and new ways of filming
The guy who wrote the comics originally, Lowell Cunningham, lives here in Knoxville and in undergrad when I worked at Best Buy part-time, he used to just come in and buy camera equipment and other stuff every once in a while like a normal dude he was the nicest guy he made enough money off the comics to really never work again so he was just doing what he wanted
Also, Tommy Lee is fluent in Spanish.
Tommy is from San Antonio. Not surprised his Mexian-Spanish is good.
Had no idea! We were truly surprised by his Spanish skills, guy kills it 😄
Vincent D'Onofrio was brilliant in this movie
His physical performance alone sold the heck out of the role he was playing. Such a great actor!
@@OfficialMediaKnightsthe make-up effects of the 'Edgar Suit' decaying over the movie was well done too.
He was great as Detective Robert Goren from Law and Order Criminal Intent.
He reminds me so much of Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera here.
A legendary performance from Vincent denofreo
Vincent D'Onofrio is a true star of this movie for sure
The saga of J and K continues in the second and third movies. Most of the time follow up movies aren't as good as the first but these are exceptions to the rule. ❤your reactions.
20:37 was hilarious.
-Does he need sugar water again?
-trying to act casual. "quick, your crush is coming!"
-"act natural!"
And Vincent D'onofrio's incredible physical acting.
Peak 😂
22:06 -Gave him break from live! 😂
Vincent D'Onofrio for another win.
And I love anything that Linda Fiorintino is in.
men in black is another case of one of those really solid trilogies. the second one isnt as liked but it isnt necessarily bad, and the third is such a good send off and sucha good story that it might very well be my favorite of the three. if you guys watch the rest you are in for a treat.
17:06 little fun fact, the worm aliens speak the same language as jabba the hutt from star wars
didn't know this, but I'm so glad I do now.
I thought so! It sounded like Huttese.
🎶Here come the Men in Black…🎶
Now I gotta hear it 😂😂💃🏾
A funny meme I once came across was a quote saying "if aliens discovered earth they'd roll up the windows and keep driving". 😅
Oh! And since y'all liked the first Men in Black film, I *definitely* recommend the movie that Will Smith stared in a year before this one. It's called Independence Day(1996).
My favourite quote of the movie (with a nice little gibe to the US Forces): "Congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of gouverment training."
Oh and for the coffee drinking aliens: In the MiB animated series, you get to know, that on their homeplanet, coffee is a delicacy and only the King of their species is allowed to drink it.
What about the cigarettes? Do they just enjoy smoking or do those exist on their planet too?
@@Courier_Seven The cigarettes weren't seen anymore in the series. Probably becuase it was more oriented to children/teens
I was wondering what that, as I distinctly remember the vhs and dvd versions that i own saying Malibu comics.
It's just marbles all the way up
21:45 that tall guy isn't he Lurch from the Addams Family 1993 movie
Yep. His name is Carel Struycken and he's Dutch.
Thanks for this!
Getting ready to go to the funeral of our dear friend of 38 years....much needed laughter.♥️
R.I.P. Rip Torn (Zed)
I was a huge fan of Rip Torn before this movie because of his character "Artie" in The Larry Sanders Show. I had no idea he was going to be in this movie before I saw it so I got a great surprise in the cinema!
Him voice Zeus in disney hercules
@@fredfredburger5150 I like him in Freddy Got Fingered and Dodgeball. Goofy roles for him.
"I've never seen sugar do that", f'n love it. 😉
fun fact: the bugs body gets more and more decomposed in each scene he’s in.
Edgar's wife is best character.
Oh, and Tommy Lee Jones' Spanish? The guy owns a couple of ranches in Texas and is fluent. Love this man!
"A practical joke by the Great Attractor, he thought it was funny as hell."
Vincent D'Onofrio trying to lean in the truck is one of my favourite moments.
You should watch the other two for sure!
You’ll really come to adore their partner & friendship over the coming movies. So much so, by the end you’re gonna go “awhhh, that’s awesome”.
@40:54 I love how he classifies the UFO as a vehicle 😂 I thought it only applies to cars lol
It applies to cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs.
Just before I was 10 as well 💜💜
Dude your dad created one of coolest core memories ever
RIP to your dad. Sounds like he was an amazing man!
Lucky I was -1 when this was out 😂 but I remember the second release though
Pleeeease yes to Enemy of the State!
That whole test scene cracks me up, but ripping the paper and dragging the table are my favourite funny moments.
This might be completely wrong, but i always saw the bug''Edgar skin'' as getting more rigor mortis as time went on. Thats why it seemed like he had more difficulty moving as time went on. Don't know if that is a good attention to detail, but it kinda fits.
You're right and wrong. The skin is decaying because it belongs to a dead man, but rigor mortis needs a skeletal structure.
My absolute favorite movie! Always funny, great acting, dialog and effects, it's just the best!
I have this trilogy on video, and now I need to.go back and watch them! Thanks for upgrading my Saturday! 😂😂😂 I won't give it away, but I can't wait for you to get through all 3 films. Terrific reaction! ❤❤❤
Vincent D’Onofrio is awesome in this.
@37:27 Tommy Lee Jones was 51 when Will Smith called him an “old guy”. By his definition, Will is now an “old guy” at the age of 55.
Woooow u don't say 😂
WAIT THAT'S KINGPIN? What in the fucking world, I didn't know Vincent D'onofrio was the guy who played the bug. Holy SHIT.
Ur mightyyyyyy late then 😂
One of my favorite line deliveries in any movie is TLJ's "Did he say when?"
I'm SO glad you guys are starting this franchise and going into it completely blind!! It's extremely rare to find someone like that nowadays 😄
46:00 not carrying Linda Fiorentini over into the sequels was a baffling creative decision.
I had got the sense she could be pretty picky with her roles and didn't want to do the sequels, but I may have none of that right. Could also see the powers that be just wanting to keep the formula going.
Fiorentino wasn't available.
That Ending with the marbles...still destroys my brain till today if I think about it :D Also: Great reaction :D
I remember you had to wait until the end of the movie to see the music video Will Smith for the movie … was so fun
"You do know Elvis is dead, right?"
"No Elvis is not dead, he just went home."
“A person is smart, people are stupid” realest talk ever 💯
Degrees of Separation: Tommy Lee Jones played Sissy Spacek's husband in the Loretta Lynn biopic, 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. Rip Torn, who played 'Zed' in MIB, is Sissy Spacek's cousin. Texans all around!
Never saying no to a Men in Black reaction.
I noticed this version is censored. Jeebs was supposed to say " you insensitive prick" not "you insensitive jerk" at the pawn shop. What else did they change?
Yeah, its not even offensive but im Aussie so not much is offensive for me. Is Pr*ck super offensive or something?
Yeah that's a classic line, very noticeable change. I thought they'd only censor it like that for the cable or even broadcast version, not streaming - I wonder what service they were on.
Wow man. Good old days. A movie from my childhood. And in the end when our galaxy is in a marble. Man This is just something else. Love your reaction guys.
Will Smith SLAPS in this movie... 😆
HA! 😂🤣
Like how he slapped Chris rock
Don't you think that joke is getting a bit old?
A great effect
Well played 😆 *chef's kiss*
Since watching Will Smith here should watch ID4 1996 Independence Day more so watch it on July 4th would most definitely make a great movie to watch that day
The existential suggestion at the end reminds me of the movie "Contact" with Jody Foster. (Which, if you haven't already reacted to, i would highly recommend.) where she says her dad always said "It we are the only life in the universe, ...it seems like an awful waste of space."
"You insensitive jerk!" Huh, I didn't think you guys watched edited versions of movies, that's definitely not the line I remember lol
Same.
yeah, its supposed to be Insensitive prick. I looked it up and apparently netflix uses an edited version that replaces that scene with the tv edit version.
Depending on which platform they're watching it it is not unusual for some of these platforms to make edits without telling anybody. Consider if you will the edited version of splash.
@@HeathsHarleyQuinn It should be fucking illegal. At least tell people you're selling them an adulterated product.
Great video! MIB 2 is just as good as 1. K and J are in it again. MIB 3 gives us the reason why J was chosen to be a MIB. Boris the animal was awesome!
A week ago, I was looking through your uploads to see if you’ve reacted to MIB and just like that, you guys drop this! You guys are amazing. I grew up on this and it’s one of my favorite comfort movies now.
The "parkour guy" in the beginning is Ray Park, who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars, and Toad in the X-Men movie
I kept wondering all these years if that's ray park!
It's not, it's an actor named Keith Campbell. Definitely does look like him though, especially Toad era Ray!
@@karadj1313 I stand corrected!
@@Taekwonjoe75 I honestly feel like he eeeeasily could’ve done that part tho for sure 😋
I just keep learning the best stuff about this movie in this comment thread!
'Men In Black' premiered at a theater near you 27 years ago today, July 2, 1997
49:00 If you make it through the trilogy, this question will be answered
Pretty decent assessment I thought along similar lines. But some of the aliens were likely threats.
The guy who played Jeebs is Tony Sholub. He was in the show Monk and the movie Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen.
And Thirteen Ghost, another great movie.
Shalhoub.
@@akinpaws my bad. thx!
Love Will Smith in his prime. He put out blockbuster after blockbuster. Such a phenom in so many arenas.
(I would not like to see what it does to Humans 😬)
If you look at the scene I timestamped again, there is no bullet or energy blast either. Because radiation is invisible!
I grew up with the animated series, which was pretty great too.
21:58 thats mir Homm from Star Trek TNG the Butler of Laxana Troi | 23:52 Kit Fisto as a Baby aww 😅 | I want a flashy thing, I could watch a great movie, erase my memory and can watch it again 😂 | I like the 2nd movie even more
Makes sense for Kit Fisto baby since the worms are speaking Huttese :)
J And K not moving as the ship crashes towards him is in my top5 favorite scenes of all time I always get chills seeing it
Definitely watch Men In Black 2 and 3. Also check out the movies Bad Boys(1995) and Jumanji(1995).
My favorite thing from this movie, other than the comedy, is K impersonating Zed when he says We're not hosting an intergalactic kegger down here, and I say that all the time
Oh, how I wish I had the time right now, but will have to bookmark this for later. Just wanted to stop by and say how excited I am for this reaction! Are you guys planning on covering the trilogy? Thanks. 🧡
Fun Fact: Linda Flourentino won the part in this movie in a poker game. It's a shame she didn't come back for the sequel.
A classic awesome duo with will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones
Seriously, what great chemistry! Loved those two together!
