A Mario & Luigi run with the following rules:
* You may only increase HP
* You may not go to the same shop twice
* You may not visit Fawful (if playing PiT)
* You may not use special attacks except on Bosses, even for practice
* You may not use the starbeans Café (if playing SS)
in the very final battle will be easy because no need of damage

To be fair I did the bottom one until I got the ulti-free badge ... it's not that bad. The second point doesn't seem too bad either. 1 would be by far the worst part about it
So something that just hit me, you start the final battle by defeating the Younger Princess Shroob, then when the Elder Princess is unleashed, she goes on a rampage trying to kill you, getting up not one, but two times to try and take vengeance for her sister. Now think about another time, another place.... if Luigi even was hurt in a terrible way, wouldn't Mario do whatever was in his power to defeat the one that hurt *his* younger brother? In a way, the Shroob Princesses weren't alternate planet counterparts to Peach, they were counterparts to the Mario Brothers.
That's an interesting thought.
Well I mean they're sisters, obviously Elder Princess Shroob would try and defeat the people who killed her sister.

That kid who lost the Bowser fight....Was actually me...I was literally playing the game after a car ride home, after being on a trip. It took the whole ride home for me to beat the Shroob sisters and I kicked the bucket on Bowser....I quit the game for a long time after that. Yes, I do know there is a save block but at the time I was not expecting a boss and did not save.

I have never seen anyone lose a Bro. in the fight against Shrowser. A perfect way to end to This Is How You DON'T Play Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
At any rate, I'm surprised Emile didn't talk more about the story. If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that the Shroobs were putting all the stops to keep the Bros. from gathering shards of the Cobalt Star, growing increasingly desperate the further into the game you get. You're supposed to think that it's because the Cobalt Star is the only thing that can stop them once whole again, but then it's revealed that it's because the Elder Princess Shroob will be free instead. Not even her sister did anything to free her; in fact, she was willing to destroy her own castle just to stop you. That is how desperate she was. Then the fight happens and everything becomes clear. The elder princess treats her soldiers worse than dirt. All of her attacks that incorporates her minions involve them getting beat up or tossed aside in some manner. That is some surprisingly good silent story-telling from a Mario game.

...*oh.* OH. Wow, that is very much, show, don't tell, it's all there in the way she used her soldiers as projectiles to hit you instead of just sending her attack she used to bring them down on you. Jeez.
Holy crap wow. You're right. That is mind-blowing. However, it does bring some question to younger princess shroob's final lines of dialogue, where it sounds like she is being supportive of her supposedly abusive older sister, and making it almost sound like she wanted to get her sister back. But then again, it could be because she had grown to hate the bros so much and that she was about to die she didn't care anymore, as long as Mario and Luigi we're dead. Either way, props for being I spy champ of the year

Can we all agree that Chuggaaconroy really tells a story when he plays these games? The way the dialogue is read, the editing, the format of the episodes (CliffHangers, Area Stops, etc.), the way he takes breaks as if it's a season of a show all while doing literally everything there is to do in that game. It's so amazingly refreshing with all the clickbait nonsense that TH-cam is filled with. This content is so sharply and cleanly done that even as a fan since Super Luigi Galaxy in 2011, I can see how much production has improved while keeping the same nostalgic feeling of old Chuggaaconroy videos and the games themselves. He never changed his style up but tweaked it and improved it and as fans, we seriously appreciate it. It's like a new adventure, and personally, this game was a game I had never seen done but was in love with as a kid and was genuinely shocked to see it being played. The amount of preparation and intricacy is not looked over and is seriously appreciated as a viewer. I'm able to just unwind from the world once a day for 15-30 minutes. The content/commentary remains within the game and even if you're not a perfect player, you are definitely the perfect Let's Player. I went from being 11 to now 18 and I am still enjoying your work of art to this day. Thank you for all the moments and here's to everything you do next.

The way he narrates the dialogue is what inspired me to read out text in my videos. The whole thing of "game is the main focus" is what also makes me shut up during cutscenes. Dude is quite the influence.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Emile isn't the funniest, or most popular Let's Player, but he's definitely my favorite. His passion and dedication really show in everything he does. Grumps are funnier on average, sure, but watching Arin shit on everything because he's a terrible gamer gets old really fast.

Fun fact: Elder Princess Shroob's crown, despite never attacking, has an attack power of 140 (just like the rest of her body) in the North American release. Was it a mistake or was the crown actually planned to be tied to an attack during development? Who knows.

Yoob was never a Yoshi to begin with. He was constructed by us Shroobs. Indeed, Yoob was mechanical. But he suffered the same fate as my kind did...He melted away.

I personally never had any complaints about the addition of the Shrowser fight because I always saw it as epilogue fight and not the true final boss, kind of like the ending credit sequence of Bowser's Inside Story but playable.

Did Chugga NOT see the save point at 31:48? The game is hardly that cruel to shove this boss as a way just to potentially send bad players or young kids that far back to the most difficult bosses in the game. If you lose and save in the room before Bowser, you're good. Just do it again. It's entirely the player's fault if they don't save before heading into the next room with Bowser.
And the reason why Shrowser was added? It's tradition. Every final boss in the M&L series relates to Bowser in some way, shape, or form, as other comments have already said, and is always connected to the non-traditional main villain of the game.
Other than that, this was an amazing LP! I loved this game as a kid and it was nice seeing Chugga play it for my jaded college eyes to see. It really took me back and really made me remember how much I loved this game despite its flaws and the backlash against it. Of course, it's not my favorite M&L game, but it meant a lot to me when I was in the 5th grade.

Also, PS: I LOVE the credits in the first three M&L games. I don't know what the credits in Dream Team and Paper Jam are like (as I've never played them and only saw a few gameplay videos of them), but I love how Superstar Saga showed the Bros.'s, Peach's, and Toadsworth's plane trip back to the Mushroom Kingdom while dropping Bowser back to his castle, I love how Partners in Time showed really cool artwork of highlights of our adventure, I love how Bowser's Inside Story was a combination of both where it showed what happened after the main story *and* did it through a series of cool artwork in pictures with a cute cutscene at the end... Ah, I love this series.

I don't know if it's just me, but the baby tears taking care of the Shroob mushrooms greatly reminds me of the end of H.G. Wells' novel "The War of the Worlds" where *spoiler alert!* the invading Martians were defeated by the wide variety of human diseases that we had evolved to develop an immunity to or had just developed sufficient enough medicinal treatments to combat such illnesses, whereas the Martians had no such luck. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the dev's inspiration, really.
The Shrobs do a lot of things that are similar to the aliens from War of the Worlds. I think they were somewhat inspired by them.
Even the fact that they drain vim from Toads to similar to how they harvest blood from humans in WotW.

Ah. Still impressive nevertheless. However, I read the book when I was in middle school. It really stimulated my imagination.
The final Shrowser fight is consistency within the series. Bowser in some shape or form is always the final fight in the Mario and Luigi series. Whether that being Bowletta, Shrowser, Dark Bowser, Dreamy Bowser, Or Paper Big Bowser. That is probably the most likely reason why they ended with bowser.
*(SPOILERS FOR ENTIRE M&L SERIES)*
It's also consistent in that Bowser somehow ends up swallowing an equally or more important character/plot device at the end.
Super Star Saga had Cackletta, Partners in Time had Princess Shroob, Inside Story had Fawful, Dream Team had the Dream Stone, and Paper Jam had... well... Bowser.

I don't know if that's the best reason to end the game with the Shrowser fight instead of just Elder Princess Shroob, though. Besides, this is only the second game in the series to do that, so it only set a trend for the third game and beyond to follow.

The younger princess cares about her army but cares little for her sister while the elder princess couldn’t care less about her army but cares deeply for her sister
It seemed like less of World Domination and more conquest of both the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms. Otherwise surviving Shroobs would have made an appearance outside the Mushroom Kingdom in Superstar Saga or it's remake and Dream Team.

i like how in Elder Princess Shroob phase 1, if you use trampolines, the ufos politely move out of the way for the bros.

With the best antagonist in any Mario game, a wonderfully underrated soundtrack, a pretty good story, wonderful character interactions, great boss fights, and plenty of memorable locations, Partners in Time is my favorite in the Mario and Luigi series (Only beating Bowsers Inside Story by a thread), hopefully in the Superstar Saga remake goes well this will get another chance.
(For the record I have not beaten Superstar Saga or Dream Team, and never even played Paper Jam)

What I like about the Shroobs is that we actually *see* what their capable of, them shooting up Toad town, turning the sky red, then literally sucking the *SOULS* out of innocent Toads to fuel their saucers, their pure enjoyment out of death and destruction, not to mention they have technology the Mushroom Kingdom can only Dream of.
Flawful is a great villain, but a lot of what he does in Bowsers Inside Story is left off screen, (Taking over Bowser/Peaches Castle, Midbus, ect.), here we see just what the Shroobs are capable of.
I also plan to fully play Superstar Saga with the remakes, and get to Dream Team and Paper Jam eventually

This was personally one of my favorite projects that Emile has done. I love the Mario & Luigi series and Partners In Time was actually one of the lets plays I watched as a child a long long time ago on TH-cam and loved it! Although the only Mario & Luigi game I played and own is Bowsers Inside Story I will definently play the others one day and this is at the top of my list for games to play!

For anyone playing along reading this, you can save in the castle before entering the throne room. Stuffwell will still give you the same time travel option he gave you in the past, and if you mess up against Shrowser you'll restart from there instead.

Have you heard of SullyPwnz? :3 Even though I agree, Chuggaa is definitely my favorite Nintendo Let's Player and probably my favorite one in general by far! And he SO *_NEEDS_* to play Bowser's Inside Story 0w0 (and Dream Team for that matter; DT FTW X3) But... Sully is awesome too!! :D He's really funny, really cool, and he's played all the Mario and Luigi series ^^ (how i found him actually :0) So, I'd suggest checking him out, Sully needs more love
I think that'll be one of his next Mario LPs. The only one I can see happening before this is Mario Galaxy 2.

I love the final boss theme. The feeling of desperation yet hopelessness, as you know they will lose.Elder Princess shroob malforms her body and yells out in agony, to try and get enough strength to win the battle. And it was not necessarily to destroy the kingdom, rather to avenge her sister. It makes you kinda feel bad for them.
Yeah for me its the highlight of the soundtrack. It really encapsulates the feeling of a battle for the fate of two worlds. Mario and Luigi need to win so the Shroobs don't conquer their world and turn all the Toads into fuel. Elder Princess Shroob needs to win so her kind won't die out and also to avenge her fallen sister

Keep in mind, Princess Shroob wanted to destroy the kingdom, forcing the brothers to fight back. I can't feel sorrow for her sister since she told them the Shroobs will live on after beating her, indicating she wanted to control the kingdom as well. Besides, it makes sense as that would explain why Peach trapped her in the Cobalt Star.

Baby Mario funniest baby and Baby Luigi most adorable baby that ending was so cute!
Hey Chugga! I found a weird glitch in Gritzy Desert. On the east side of the spiked vines area in the southern part of the main area, if you put the babies in the tornado, then spin jump the bros into it, if you quickly switch to the babies, you won't be able to switch back to the bros. If you jump into the vines as the babies, you'll be invulnerable. This is a complete softlock, not even stuffwell responds. Only way out is to reset your console. Which sucks because I was doing a revisit to get some stuff I couldn't get on my first run and I lost about a half an hours worth of work. :(

I just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for making all of these wonderful lets plays ever since I was twelve(I think, I could've been eleven). While I can't say I have seen every single one of your lets plays, they have always been a huge help for me, a source of entertainment, and an inspiration for me to be more outgoing when I was younger. One of the things that I always loved about your videos was that they are always full of energy and genuine passion, as evidenced from...every single one of your videos(Especially in your speech about Mario 64, Steve the Trooper, the Boo that just kept getting away, and Watermelon physics. Or your batteries dying.). Not just that, but you always have put effort into your editing, like in Pokemon and Xenoblade Chronicles, where you made pop ups for all the little details about the game. Finally, one of the biggest appeals to you, as 2nd Look puts it, you really haven't changed that much. Even though TH-cam has changed, with the omnipotence of drama on youtube and the negativity in the world, you still make content and enjoy it.

Yes, I am aware of the Secret *Spoilers* Boss In BIS.
Holy crap, that final boss music! You can practically hear the desperation from both sides. With the Shroobs, it's their last line of defense in keeping the kingdom under their rule and they will risk even their very lives for it. With Mario, Luigi and the babies, all hope rests on their shoulders to save a nation that's been taken over so there is absolutely no room for any mistakes. The future is hanging in the balance and if they were to fail, it's all over. Not just for them but for everyone.
Jeez, that got dark really fast. On a lighter note, the interactions between the babies and the Bros were just adorable and sweet. They really brought a smile to my face.

I beat the Princess Shroobs recently, and I have to say, Partners in Time is a FANTASTIC game.
I definitely did not have the best gear equipped for this battle, and it took me longer to beat them as a result, but I still powered through and took them out.
Also, the music for the final battle against the Elder Princess nearly moved me to tears...
But the best part about this whole thing...was that I knocked out Elder Princess Shroob’s true form with a counterattack.

Every twin will be a smudge older. Whoever's born 2nd is the younger twin. Whether it's minutes or hours in between. And there are all kinds of twins. I met a pair of twins who were brother and sister. Some pairs of twins look nothing alike as is the case with the Princess Shroobs. The Princess Shroobs would be fraternal twins as well as the brother and sister who are twins.

NOTES!!!!! (In no particular order)
1. One thing you didn't touch on is the fact that in the younger princess's speech, she says the word destroy. If you look at the symbols that make up the word, and then play back through, you might notice that shroob's apparently say the word destroy a lot. In fact, the word destroy over and over again is what the elder princess says right before the battle, and also double as her last words after the battle. I think this says something about the shroob's as a whole, and thought it might be something interesting to show in the bonus video, so here you go.
2. I also didn't use bros attacks out of battles, so as a result, the only attack I was good enough to to use on this fight were the pocket chomps, so I can kinda relate to your frustration with this fight.
3. I personally do KINDA like the shrowsr fight. I get why it isn't liked, but I thought it was sorta cool when on my first playthrough. My reasoning on this is because I always thought of it as a bonus fight. First of all, there is a save block in present time after the elder shroob fight, AND it has stuffwell's time travel device applied to it. This means that you can safely die on shrowser, and you can go back to the old game if you want to redo the true final battle quickly or forgot something (although once you go back, you can't go forward again without beating the princesses again). And as a kid, I always wondered why the enemies allowed you to attack, and just stood there. So naturally, I really liked a counterattack only fight. Still, it was a bit bare bones, and I don't like how it took away the title of final boss from elder shroob. Plus I can imagine someone missing the save block like you did and having to do that whole thing again. I think something like shrowser would have been great to stick in holly jolli village to explain the toad's sudden fear.
4. I counted the cookies luigi collected on yoshi's island, because I always do that for finite resources. And he DID always have that final cookie till he gave it to baby luigi.
5. For the bonus video, can you go back to one of the toads you missed. He talks about how Kelly koopa wrote a book, and he won't let you see the end cause spoilers (although the last page is torn out for good measure).
6. When I was seven, I really wanted this game. Dad asked if I'd rather get BiS, but the cover art from partners in time being cooler, plus the concept of time travel vs body exploration, led me to beg for PiT, stating that newer isn't always better. Dad bought BiS instead anyway, and I was pretty mad at him when Christmas came round. Then later, when I got my hands on PiT, and found fawful, I got pretty confused. See, I didn't have internet back then, so the only two games in the Mario and luigi franchise I knew about were PiT and BiS, yet fawful talked of the bros beating him. This made me think PiT came first, and made me feel pretty silly for my "newer isnt always better" argument.
7. Thanks for doing an lp of this game. I had a blast.

I'm trying to think of what game it could be. Phantom Hourglass doesn't seem correct to me, and it still feels too early for another Pokémon game (not to mention it's unlikely he'll cover ORAS, HGSS, or RBY, which would have a similar place, though I'd love that second one)

I'm glad to have seen the finish for this game! As chuggaa described.. I was the kid that lost to the true final fight, and just quit the game completely fed up xD
I think the fore shadowing with Luigi crying while seeing the cobalt star would have been great unless they immedietly afterward related it to the star. Maybe they could have had him crying and had Luigi notice it with a question mark above his head and then immedietly comforting him.
That would make it easy to write it off as just another "Baby Luigi being Baby Luigi"-moment.
You know, before this LP I always thought this game was not that good. Thank you Chuggaa for for redeeming this game in my eyes. Sure it has its flaws but every game has something to pick about and you did a great job as usual to give a deep look into the game, seriously and humorously.
