I don’t think it’s a multiverse story. I always just thought the future didn’t change because since it was in the past and the Mario’s and Luigi’s won and defeated the Shroobs it would mean the future wouldn’t change since the past had already happened but is happening to Mario and Luigi since they’re the ones going to the past
wait this is literally the MOTHER of the mario and luigi series, might actually play it 😱 great video as per usual murmilio! superstar saga before thanksgiving?!
The Pocket Chomp is infinitely worse than the Smash Egg, dawg. That said, it makes me happy to see someone sing this game’s praises. I got Partners in Time for Christmas the year it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it as a diehard fan of Superstar Saga. The darkness of this game never fully registered on my mind until I got older so in hindsight, I want y’all to consider how painfully ironic it was to have gotten the game during Christmas 2005 just to find out one of the earliest areas of the game is a ravaged Christmas-themed village that played a sad rendition of Jingle Bells. I personally love this game more than Bowser’s Inside Story, which I find good but a bit short.
Highly disagree with the Pocket Chomp and Smash Eggs statement. For one Smash Eggs did consistently the least amount of damage, particularly when there were multiple enemies on screen. Pocket Chomp is more skill based and the damage is totally in your control, if you're good you can keep going on for a while and rack up damage in the hundreds. It's still viable even in the final boss, while Smash Eggs is more certainly not viable for the final boss.
You really think a lack of their baby counterparts would stop the Mario Bros from kicking the Shroobs asses again? (I guess we'll never know now, given the fact that AlphaDream is dead)
The game was that hard I couldn't beat the younger shroom princess as a kid. It was only when I was finishing high school when I finally beat the game and this was the American release. Still one of my favorites and what got me into the series.
The campy aspect of the whole Shroob invasion comes across as a Tim Burton kind of dark. Obviously, it's dark, but in a more exaggerated and crazy way (moody & quirky), than serious. After all, there are a ton of sillier moments, including times the Shroobs are around. This actually fits perfectly for the Mario & Luigi series, which is a wacky, antics-filled adventure that prioritizes fun and/or engagement.
That makes alot of sense considering Tim Burton made Mars Attacks, which has very similar aliens (Even in design with the large heads.) Honestly maybe that's why I kinda have an affinity for the Shroobs. They kinda remind me of both Mars Attacks but also in a way the Combine from Half-Life 2, both looking to conquer worlds over, and both turning to more and more desperate measures as the games progress, the kamikaze during the final boss Spoiler for HL2 and Episode 1: and for the Combine, sending a city grounds troop off inside their own base to take out one guy, as well as blowing up their main base of operations on Earth in order to try and get the message that they're in trouble out and also to allow for another mass-invasion from their interdimentional forces. I love it in media where we can see how desperate an alien race gets once it's being threatened, the type of heinous stuff it'd do to win or keep power.
I hope Nintendo will make a game, 3d Mario or RPG, where the Shroobs come back in any form. I'd like it to be dark and not upbeat like most Mario games
the most interesting part of partners in time's bosses to me, esp having made it to the bosses at low level and no equipment, stache only run, is Elder Shrooboid and Elder Princess Shroob's 2nd phase. these 2 bosses have 2 of the only attacks in the entire game where it can be completely unavoidable damage. For Elder Shrooboid thats its spin attack where you have to hammer it. I noticed it will either: 1. stop after 4 hits. 2. stop after more than 4. if its more than 4, then someone's dying, since trying to hit more than 4 on is not too feasible for how fast its spin attack starts up. thats what makes it a pretty big rng check. Elder Princess Shroob's 3-leg sweep is, while avoidable, it can become unavoidable when the legs start going too fast to jump over. I was able to make it to Elder Princess Shroob's 2nd phase at level 19 in a no equip/badges no healing items+no purchasing bros items, and Stache only level ups run. the game kindly provides you with just enough bros items and the ability to stock up on mrs thwomp's rock shot attack. I quickly found out its literally impossible to beat her at that level w/o savestates or tas, cuz her foot has 400 hp and the damage done is pathetic with red shell, plus copy flower wouldn't be good since its not a "true infinite" due to its speed eventually being too fast. due to how partners in time's level scaling works, I found out soon after this, that level 23 is the absolute sweet-spot. the one thing about bros items is while Copy flowers is one of the best, that usually applies to general playthroughs. as you'll very quickly see it must be used very-sparingly in low-level no equips+stache only, thus the opinion on it changes in this scenario. it deff has it uses for the last few bosses and esp Elder Princess Shroob's 400hp Foot+200hp Crown. Red Shell, once you get the timing down, as well as Pocket Chomp, become the absolute saviors of a low-level run. as their respective speeds are "capped" and are the actual "True Infinite" Bros items. they surprisingly carry the low-level no equipment+only stache run very hard. Trampoline also applies too with Red Shell+Pocket Chomp, being a True Infinite Bros item, but thats only provided you can quickly react to each character's blur every time-
There were more things that made this game dark that could've been added to this video. For one the Shroob Planet was dying and the species as a whole were dying which is why they invade the Mushroom Kingdom. This game shows the messed-up stuff they do like taking the life force of the Toads away to power their ships but when you put that in the context of them trying to save their species it really makes you think. Yes, they did evil stuff, but a lot of it was for the survival of their entire race. The final boss of the game also has a bit of sad things going on, for one Elder Princess Shroob had to watch as the Bros and Baby Bros were one by one eliminating her species and even killing her sister without her being able to do a single thing (Though their deaths are questioned with their appearance in Bowser's Inside Story). Two, Elder Princess Shroob will use some of the Shroob ships to attack the Bros and Baby Bros with kamikaze tactics, they are willing to give up THEIR LIVES for a chance to beat us. To them if it means that Elder Princess Shroob wins, than their species lives on so they will gladly give up their lives to end you. And third, the music. Not only is it incredibly somber but the name of Elder Princess Shroob's theme is called "Another's Requiem" which for those of you that don't know a Requiem is a song typically played at a funeral or something along the lines of that. The song's title literally meaning the death of one of two species. This battle will quite literally decide the fate of both species, one will survive and the other will die. WE are the deciding factor; WE condemn a whole species to ruin and extinction.
One of my first ever Video Games. My first Nintendo Game, My First Mario and Luigi. This game changed my life forever. Not having a Remake made me really sad, and you can imagine how i almost started crying at todays Nintendo Direct. Mario & Luigi Brothership. Thank you Nintendo.
God this game was amazing even back then as a child. It took me literal months to beat it and I still don't regret it to this day. By far my favorite game of the series. I wonder how brothership will be though?
the american version lacks a bit of polishment (and sound effects or other minor details) and the ridiculous amount of HP is just artificial difficulty. the european version didn't just decrease the HP but also gave late game bosses "automatic attacks" where they'll have an exclamation point and attack you if you attack them. basically, they'll go an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. for example, elder princess shroob will do the wario shoulder bash to whoever attacked her.
They should've upped the danger with the future slowly turning into a post apocalyptic world full of shroombs promoting Mario and Luigi to go back in time to stop the shroombs and save peach
It's indeed hard af, unless you are as stubborn as me and play the final Shroob Palace over and over until Mario and Luigi are level 90 something. Taking down the Shroob princesses with normal jumps will never be not funny.
The fact that the Bowser’s Inside Story remake has sprites for most of the Shroob variants at 7:40 makes me said that they never had their entry remade on the 3DS.
I think super paper mario is darker, I mean, You've got a lot of death (for a mario game) and betrayal of what we thought was the main villain who only wanted to bring back someone he thought dead who then did die with the not so villain villain
its a toss up between the two. Depends on what form of genocide you find darker. An all encroaching unstoppable void that you have no power to stop and must just accept your fate, or an invading alien species you can theoretically fight, but they are just using your entire species as food.
incredible how PIT and BIS is not the same universe, like these bros in BIS is the baby's from PIT but in PIT the adult Bros didnt live PIT moment when they was child
This was my favorite game of the "Superstar Saga" series of games, and it took me SO LONG as a kid to beat Elder Princess Shroob. Like, if you play this game blind and not knowing what you need to do to win, she's a fucking menace and one of the hardest bosses in all of Mario though she can still be surprisingly difficult even if you know what's coming and can prepare. I would say that the Bowletta fight at the end of Superstar Saga is probably harder, if only because of the "You only have one hit point and have to survive at least one round of attacks in that state" part of the second phase.
Seeing the friends I made along the way - Toadiko, Bowser Jr, Kylie Koopa - turn into mushrooms forever altered my brain chemistry when I was little. I thought they died 😭 And since I couldn’t beat the final boss as an 8y.o., they stayed dead for a long time (I didn’t even know that they’d be revived)… I was so sad
I agree with everything you say, it’s also very underrated and the only that didn’t get a remake, but I remember i would struggle with the bosses and even lasted hours on bosses. Would love to play it again but can’t
Fast forward 20 something years is all?? I never pictured the bros being in their 20s. They always seemed late thirties or early 40s in my mind. Great video friend!!
This game was my First Mario and Luigi Game, and I thought it was Bowser's inside Story. I was thrown off when BiS had no dark plot twists like PiT did. I thought the same way for Kingdom Hearts 358/3 days (Title is hard to remember, apologies for getting it wrong.) because I saw kingdom hearts and thought Re:coded. by no stretch of the imagination, I wasn't a Bright Child regarding my knowledge of Franchises. to be Fair though, I got the Better of the pair anyway. BiS was Easier to Play but PiT was more immersive the older I got.
Personally I think it's the best story-wise out of the Mario and Luigi series, but the second worst gameplay wise. I felt the story broke up what was rather not very fun gameplay. I love Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team, but this one felt like the dungeons were way longer than the other entries and weren't very fun to go through. Also, purely on me, but I couldn't get the babies controls. I ended up just saying screw it and doing the standard version of the attacks I couldn't do. I would like to see this game get remade though. That'd be pretty cool.
Brothership has entered the chat. Seriously, I'd rate Reclusa as a far darker villain than the Shroobs. As soon as he makes his debut, Reclusa traps everyone in a dream world, outright saying that he plans for them to waste away and die while in their illusions. And Concordia is far from the first world he has done that to.
i think the time travel aspect works differently in this game like yea the shroobs already took over the past but then why inst the present affected? well it inst (YET), i personally belive overtime the present will fade into the present taken over by the shroobs.
As a french i remember fighting the final boss for hours praying that my ntds don't crash then i finally beat that boss and yeah clearly this was the hardest mario and Luigi i ever played
This is my favourite game in the series. I remember growing up with this game, but I never got far. Though last year I decided to pick it up again, and yea it was somewhat hard. It had some small moments where I didn't really have a lot of opportunity to attack.
I watched this vid after watching ScionVyse’s review, which made me super angry as he was just complaining (even when he wasn’t supposed to - e.g. when he said that the Copy Flower was difficult to use and blamed it on the game when it was clearly a skill issue from his side). Thank you for this objective review! Partners in Time is AMAZING. The only reason why it’s not that appreciated is because not enough people know it / have played it. Bowser’s Inside Story had the advantage of being released in 2009 when a lot more people had Nintendo DS’s. The same can’t be said for PiT which was released in 2005.
I am currently doing my first playthrough of this game myself, and i gotta say, the game is really fucking fun, they way they made the characters, the battles, the story, everything. Even tho this game is hard af, you can even train your timings for attacks on weaker enemies if you want too, i love this game, even tho its a pretty dark and hard game, and i really hope others will too
I'm at the at the final boss. I fought her for an hour (the single battle). And I had small window to attack cause either Mario or Luigi died and I had to spend my rounds healing them. Her attack are a nightmare to avoid. The one when the vessels crash on you was for most part a skill issue from me. The same attack but this time using the portal I couldn't remember cause 20 minutes (no joke) had passed, had to rely on shadow. The one when she swip the group with her tentacle was manageble with 2 tentacle with 3 it was a pain, sometime my control would stop reponding, with the speed increasing the tentacle caught up to me and when Luigi and Mario were hit, they were stuck in loop. The gaz attack and tentacle stabbinb not a problem cause they're easy, the one were grab Mario and Luigi I either mess up the timing (like a lot of thing with the hammer) or just was not paying attention thinking she was about to attack with the vessels. And the one I hate the most, the purple super ball projectile. I don't get the timing with that thing. Princess Shroob is a huge brick wall, for the first a boss really challenged me. After losing I was mad cause you know I spent an entire hour fighting her just to lose. I acknoledge that my strategy wasn't the best. I didn't feel like trying to fight her again today. But let's try again tomorrow ( I guess I'll also have to redo the princess shroob fight but oh well she was not that hard to beat) (It's still my favorite mario game and game from my childhood)
Funny how every1 hates smash egg, but forget that in combat you can press x or y to make the babies jump, if you bounce it 2 times it deals a bunch moee damage, making it 1 of the better attacks to use, long yes but high damage
How did the shroobs even manage to survive as long as they did in the mushroom kingdom? Wouldn’t nature just kick in and have it start raining? Guess they got lucky

I always just thought the future didn’t change because since it was in the past and the Mario’s and Luigi’s won and defeated the Shroobs it would mean the future wouldn’t change since the past had already happened but is happening to Mario and Luigi since they’re the ones going to the past
I love this game, especially when we see peoples from the mushroom kingdoom being used as fuel for the shroobs 😅
Even thought my first game was Superstar Saga, I can agree that this game is dark AF
8:06 wouldn't they just use water pistols or something if they ever returned
Been waiting for this because this game in particular frightened me as a kid (I was like 4) but this did always mean something to me.
wait this is literally the MOTHER of the mario and luigi series, might actually play it 😱
great video as per usual murmilio!
superstar saga before thanksgiving?!
Surely SMRPG won’t delay the next video
@@murmilio42069 is smrpg like mother
@@murmilio42069 ok i just watched my cousin play it for like two hours, definitely not like the original MOTHER
(I guess we'll never know now, given the fact that AlphaDream is dead)
ironic
But as an adult, i now see how it was scary
When i was in elementary school, the Shroobs made me scared at night
They kinda remind me of both Mars Attacks but also in a way the Combine from Half-Life 2, both looking to conquer worlds over, and both turning to more and more desperate measures as the games progress, the kamikaze during the final boss
Spoiler for HL2 and Episode 1:
and for the Combine, sending a city grounds troop off inside their own base to take out one guy, as well as blowing up their main base of operations on Earth in order to try and get the message that they're in trouble out and also to allow for another mass-invasion from their interdimentional forces.
At least someone talked about it.
I'm gonna try something like this
This game might be very dark but i love this game
Wait a minute. I didn't saw the rage function in Partners in Time. I thought it was introduced in Bowser's Inside Story.
Never beat this game as a kid (skill issue) but I always loved it and its vibe it gives off. Spooky aliens were cool af
Who are you calling evil we're saving our species from death from elder princess shroob
the most interesting part of partners in time's bosses to me, esp having made it to the bosses at low level and no equipment, stache only run, is Elder Shrooboid and Elder Princess Shroob's 2nd phase.
these 2 bosses have 2 of the only attacks in the entire game where it can be completely unavoidable damage.
For Elder Shrooboid thats its spin attack where you have to hammer it. I noticed it will either:
1. stop after 4 hits.
2. stop after more than 4.
if its more than 4, then someone's dying, since trying to hit more than 4 on is not too feasible for how fast its spin attack starts up. thats what makes it a pretty big rng check.
Trampoline also applies too with Red Shell+Pocket Chomp, being a True Infinite Bros item, but thats only provided you can quickly react to each character's blur every time-
wow you’re insane! I would have loved to watch this play through! Good job dude!
Second favorite game of all time
12:02 No wonder I lost that fight so many times💀
God this game was amazing even back then as a child. It took me literal months to beat it and I still don't regret it to this day. By far my favorite game of the series. I wonder how brothership will be though?
i thought the darkest one was super paper mario (the world almost becomes a new world under control of dimentio)
The soundtrack is so good and makes it feel like horror
Lore of The DARKEST Mario game. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time momentum 100
This is my first ever mario and luigi rpg. And its soooo hard i couldn't beat the lollipop shroob.
the american version lacks a bit of polishment (and sound effects or other minor details) and the ridiculous amount of HP is just artificial difficulty. the european version didn't just decrease the HP but also gave late game bosses "automatic attacks" where they'll have an exclamation point and attack you if you attack them. basically, they'll go an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. for example, elder princess shroob will do the wario shoulder bash to whoever attacked her.
finally M&L:PIT is finally getting recognition for its battle system and the overall story
They should've upped the danger with the future slowly turning into a post apocalyptic world full of shroombs promoting Mario and Luigi to go back in time to stop the shroombs and save peach
Super Paper Mario is still darker.
Now they’re making a M&L6 on switch, I hope they’ll remake this masterpiece on switch
Lore of The DARKEST Mario game. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time Momentum 100
I love how there is only 1 use of the touch controls. It’s perfect. I would have it no other way.
It’s a gimmick that does not overstay their welcome
I think super paper mario is darker, I mean, You've got a lot of death (for a mario game) and betrayal of what we thought was the main villain who only wanted to bring back someone he thought dead who then did die with the not so villain villain
its a toss up between the two. Depends on what form of genocide you find darker. An all encroaching unstoppable void that you have no power to stop and must just accept your fate, or an invading alien species you can theoretically fight, but they are just using your entire species as food.
I remember as a kid, I couldn't beat the red version of the first boss.
I beat him easy spamming ice flowers
The American release..... has double health bosses.......... I think I need to find a new copy of Partners in Time 💀
incredible how PIT and BIS is not the same universe, like these bros in BIS is the baby's from PIT but in PIT the adult Bros didnt live PIT moment when they was child
I may be a bit biased, but I love this game.
Elder Princess Shroob took me an hour to beat while every other bosses of the game took 15 minutes or less (with some rare exceptions)
That'd be pretty cool.
not water
specificially baby tears is anti shroom
Brothership has entered the chat.
Seriously, I'd rate Reclusa as a far darker villain than the Shroobs.
As soon as he makes his debut, Reclusa traps everyone in a dream world, outright saying that he plans for them to waste away and die while in their illusions.
And Concordia is far from the first world he has done that to.
Wow Dark!
i think the time travel aspect works differently in this game
like yea the shroobs already took over the past but then why inst the present affected?
well it inst (YET), i personally belive overtime the present will fade into the present taken over by the shroobs.
As a french i remember fighting the final boss for hours praying that my ntds don't crash then i finally beat that boss and yeah clearly this was the hardest mario and Luigi i ever played
Pro I defeated her and the game as a child on my second attempt (I was 6)
This is my favourite game in the series.
I remember growing up with this game, but I never got far.
Though last year I decided to pick it up again, and yea it was somewhat hard.
It had some small moments where I didn't really have a lot of opportunity to attack.
I agree with this video entirely, i have always seen this game to be the darkest in the series
The same can’t be said for PiT which was released in 2005.
really good video and essay, but why does no one EVER ttain mario and luigi defense stat
My most favorite M&L game still not having a remake...
Probably in the future if Brothership sells well
I am currently doing my first playthrough of this game myself, and i gotta say, the game is really fucking fun, they way they made the characters, the battles, the story, everything. Even tho this game is hard af, you can even train your timings for attacks on weaker enemies if you want too, i love this game, even tho its a pretty dark and hard game, and i really hope others will too
Ironically I felt like I did pretty well playing this game. Then again, it’s not my first Mario and Luigi game.
My favorite soundtrack in the game is toad-wood and the vimFactory
AAAAH A PURPLE MUSHROOM SO DARK AND SCARY AIIIEEEEEE SOMEONE HELP ME I AM AFRA-ACK
But let's try again tomorrow ( I guess I'll also have to redo the princess shroob fight but oh well she was not that hard to beat)
(It's still my favorite mario game and game from my childhood)
Funny how every1 hates smash egg, but forget that in combat you can press x or y to make the babies jump, if you bounce it 2 times it deals a bunch moee damage, making it 1 of the better attacks to use, long yes but high damage
I never noticed the elder and younger princess shroobs in the background
Compared to the other parts this game just made "very few sales", explains a lot, especially with a 2005 release
How did the shroobs even manage to survive as long as they did in the mushroom kingdom? Wouldn’t nature just kick in and have it start raining? Guess they got lucky
A remake of this game would work well with similar style to Brothership
Correct, it IS the best in the series
My favorite game of that SAGA
FR: Je n'ai pas trouvé le jeu spécialement difficile comparé aux autres. °_ °
EN: I haven't found the game more difficult compared to the other ones. °_ °
honestly im surprised how far 7 year old me made it back when i had this game on the 3DS. i made it half-way thru the game somehow-
So, I assume you gonna do a video on superstar next? Personally I would like to see a video on the two remakes. But, in particular the remake of superstar since it is actually good.
Either this game or Bowser’s Inside Story DS was my first Mario and Luigi game. I don’t remember though
second darkest only to super paper mario
morbid
This game used to scare me when I was a kid
I didn't know English while playing this game (It was a hell to finish due to this) so I didn't realize it was dark until now.
Super Paper Mario is darker
This game traumatised me as a kid
first time playing this game i really hate it cause it goes thru a long journey and a lot of fighting with suffering 😭
i left with unfinished childhood games
I agree with the game being hard. My dumbass couldn't beat the Elder Princess Shroob for almost 1 month 😭
