    WCW Superbrawl VII took place in the legendary Cow Palace on the 23rd of February 1997. The main event of the show featured Hollywood Hogan defending the WCW Championship against Rowdy Roddy Piper.
    Roddy Piper defeated Hulk Hogan at WCW Starrcade in December of 1996. The championship was not on the line during this match, and Hogan (and the nWo) would claim that Piper didn't beat Hogan by trying to destroy all evidence of the Starrcade main event (including tape replays). Piper was granted a title shot at Superbrawl 7, and he only agreed to face Hogan again once the Hulkster brought Piper's family into the rivalry. To prepare for the main event, Roddy Piper locked himself up in Alcatraz.
    Elsewhere on the card, fans didn't know if Lex Luger would compete in the scheduled tag team title match. The Outsiders injured Luger on Nitro, and if Lex couldn't provide a doctors note then Eric Bischoff said Lex would be unable to compete on PPV. Lex got the release form but it was one week too late, and so The Giant was officially booked to face Scott Hall and Kevin Nash all alone. Lex Luger would show up at Superbrawl however, getting one of the best pops of the evening.
    This video looks at the entire Superbrawl VII pay per view. Every match and every moment gets covered.
    00:00 - Roddy Piper leaves Alcatraz
    02:20 - Syxx vs Dean Malenko

    Speaking of DDP's upcoming fued, the fact that Randy Savage was told he was going to put over a midcard guy and his reaction was to tell the midcard guy he wanted to take that guy's finisher when he could have dictated a screwy finish is why he will always be a greater wrestler than Hogan

    • @Paranitis
      @Paranitis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Savage was always about the business, whereas Hogan was always about himself. It's like The Undertaker really. Just did what was needed to be done, put whoever over that was told to be put over, and that was that.

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      He wasn’t told he was going to put over a midcarder. He was supposed to go over in all the matches. Randy thought that was dumb and that it wouldn’t do anything for either man or the company. So he (for lack of a better word) demanded that he put over Dally in the first match and that the other matches be super competitive as well.

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Black Boy King TV that’s true for you maybe. And definitely for a lot of people. But I never liked Hogan’s shtick, even as a kid. I grew up on Bret. That’s my guy. And out of 80’s characters I prefer the Macho Man, I always thought he was more entertaining because he was more varied. You aren’t wrong on Hogan’s impact though, and I do respect what he did for wrestling, but the truth is that everybody has different experiences with wrestling and not everybody got into it for Hogan. There are older fans who prefer Flair, Dusty, Race or Andre (or if they’re really old Sammartino, Morales or the Funks) southern fans who prefer Sting and Luger (or The Von Erichs if they’re from that era and Texans) and younger fans who prefer Bret and Undertaker, then even younger fans who got into it for Stone Cold and Rock (or really young fans who like Cena or Punk). That’s the thing about wrestling, there’s something for everyone.

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Black Boy King TV well Macho precedes Hogan and wielded a lot of influence over the younger stars. And Bret was already wrestling in Stampede before Hulkamania blew up, but they definitely wouldn’t have been as big without Hogan paving the way, which is why I do respect what he did for the business.

    I grew up watching every WWF episode in the 90s and going to every event they put on at the Greensboro Coliseum.
    I never watched any WCW so its awesome seeing what i missed.

    I was there! I was 13 years old and preferred WWF but stopped following after Wrestlemania 12.
    I wasn't following wrestling at all but got invited to go and I'm glad I went. This PPV was a big reason why I got back into wrestling in 97. It was a lot of fun to see live.

    Watching the clips of WCW action you show, it seems that the wrestlers were given way more freedom to perform than they were in WWF/E. The Barbarian, for example, was a slow bumbling brut for Vince but he and Meng both look awesome in WCW... I always said it about Jericho, Eddie and Rey too, they stuff they in in WCW seems so much more crazy.

    Who dislikes Bagwell as a wrestler? As a performer as Buff the Stuff he was a fine midcard heel, who could lose and keep his heat with his gimmick. And would always come across as somewhat of a threat due to his physical look and NWO connection.

    Nash earned every bit of his super contract with the Giant powerbomb alone. That was sick! Curious how he felt after that. Hogan allegedly tore his triceps after slamming Andre at WM3. Nash tears a quad stepping over a colleague in a tag match but lifts a 450 lb man upside down in a phenomenal feat of strength. Insane. Only matched by Goldbeg jackhammering the Giant

It's 9 miles from Fisherman's Wharf in North San Francisco (the closest point to Alcatraz) to The Cow Palace in South San Francisco (it's actually in Daly City). That's not even including the 2 mile swim from Alcatraz to Fisherman's Wharf. Dude must have been exhausted once he arrived at the venue.

    I really do appreciate the N64 wrestling games music in the background. Also, I do believe that the AWA held a a pay per view in the Cow Palace. Curt Hennig defeated Nick Bockwinkel for the title there back in either '87 or '88 I think. So, Tenay could've possibly been wrong on that one.

    This is the timeframe where I turned completely against WCW. I remembered seeing their main event 12 years before and eyerolled every time they tried to hype Piper and Hogan. And after this, they KEPT pushing Piper's 241 year old ass through Uncensored. The novelty of NWO was quickly wearing out at this point.

      All the talent they had and they brought HIM in for a main event push?
      If I was anyone else but the top tier main eventers I would've started packing my bags then and there.
      Hell, even if I was another main eventer, I'd probably be pissed they were putting that relic where they did. Hogan was ancient, but he still drew, still sold merch, and could still string together a coherent sentence.
