The Story of nWo: Souled Out

The nWo storyline in professional wrestling was one of the most successful and lucrative angles that Eric Bischoff ever produced for World Championship Wrestling. With Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan leading the way, the nWo became incredibly popular with wrestling fans across the world, eventually turning things around for WCW during the Monday Night TV ratings battle and helping WCW to become the biggest, most watched wrestling company in the United States.
With the nWo’s popularity at an all-time high, Eric Bischoff decided to run a special pay per view event based around the heel WCW faction. Happening in January of 1997, nWo Souled Out promised to be like nothing we had ever seen before. In a drastic creative decision, Bischoff decided to move away from the standard PPV events that he (and Vince McMahon) produced in order to create an event that would look and feel very different. Eric was in a good position to experiment with WCW, the company was being handsomely funded by Ted Turner and Time Warner, and so trying things outside of the box was Eric’s philosophy as the nWo grew in popularity. nWo Souled Out, as Eric puts it, was an experiment. The whole show was built to further give the nWo it’s own identity.

I agree with what Kevin Nash said about the PPV. If you're going to play in to the faction's cool factor, why not have the PPV in Las Vegas or Miami? And if you're going to have a Miss nWo contest, why not get some of the most beautiful supermodels at the time to be a part of that? Hell, in one of WWF's worst years of 1995, they were able to get Pam Anderson and Jenny McCarthy to be a part of WrestleMania. You're telling me Time Warner couldn't get anyone of that caliber to take part in a beauty contest during one of WCW's best years? There were things I liked about the PPV like the announcer making fun of the WCW wrestlers on their way to the ring and I liked the WCW guys being in the crowd but they should've been more involved and having verbal altercations with the group when they were on the outside or making their way to the ring. This PPV could've been used to ramp of tension between the two factions of WCW and the nWo but instead it was a pompous ego trip and was the first real sign that Eric didn't know what he was doing. In hindsight this feels more like an Aces and Eights PPV than an nWo PPV.
They did the nwo girl as a joke. As you can see by the woman and who won.
They didn’t want any pretty girls.
I wish they would have went a different routine though.

The nWo was extremely good at its peak, but it always worked best as a threatening heel faction within a WCW package. Basing an entire show around heels fundamentally doesn't work, there's got to at least be hope that the babyfaces can overcome.
Hence the need to create the Wolfpac. 🐺
They really should have created a babyface faction to foil the nWo, not just have them break apart from infighting.
Came here right after watching Clash of the Champions 34. Nwo music is still incredible after all these years.

As quickly as NWO blew up in 1996, it imploded just as quickly a year later and was so tired by the end of 1997 that WWE took them out by 98 with just 2 men: Rock and Austin.
Fun fact about regarding the "USA" chants during the opening match: both Chono and Jericho were born in America.

I liked it when the crew got huge seem more like a movement other than a regular stable
Don't get me wrong, it was far from some great idea to blow up the NWO up so bloated like that, but it was far more than just that, that ruined the NWO. Most of all how long it was dragged out for. It was a smart, like genuinely intelligent idea that was just absolutely rode into the ground as far as was possible to do.

Once Sting hit the NWO lineup it was beyond saving. As a kid I liked Sting in the red and all but as an adult now I know it didn't make any sense.
Think this PPV would made more sense if the story was that the matches where trials for some WCW wrestlers that wanted to be part of the nWo and for the nWo to get rid of some members that they would consider "weak links" if they lost. That way you can have legit matches and build rivalries of the results.
That would have worked. Having WCW guys wrestle on the NWO pay-per-view knowing the ref is for the NWO just made them look stupid for wrestling, and the NWO wrestlers weak for needing the help. No one looked good.

This "reliving the war" series is incredible! It keeps getting better and because this was when I was a kid and first started being able to follow wrestling the nostalgia level is incredibly high. Great job man I can't wait for the rest
Yeah, it's crazy and I enjoy following this series, even though I'm a year ahead on my own watch through, it's good to catch up. I've taken a year long break and now on my 2nd since I have a lot of studying to do. Along with this I watch ECW with what he shows on this channel.
As a kid born in ruthless aggression era , I love watching these cause I had no clue how good WCW was. WWE be painting a false narrative on these boys 😂

I gotta tell ya watching wcw with sting,nwo,and ddp it was amazing as a kid and switching over to raw and watching stone cold and the rock with mick Foley and undertaker that was the best time in wrestling

I went through and watched every WCW ppv on the WWE Network and man, this was a hard one to get through lol.
the nWo was an amazing concept and very influential I mean hell there's a group in Japan who is basically nWo for a new generation but if they had kept the nWo small and not have it bloat out of proportion and basically take over everything WCW did it be remembered differently nowadays
The nWo was incredibly influential in modern Japanese culture.
Nash loves the Steiners, probably in in part because they're all from Michigan, so it's no wonder why he always bumped big and sold big for them whenever they wrestled.

Agreed. I like the name "Souled Out" as a PPV event, and Halloween Havoc seems like such a no-brainer that it's incredible the WWE hasn't brought it back. I mean, wasn't there a (seemingly bad) "Horror Show" PPV last night?

If you’re tired of mediocre shows, you should give AEW a chance. Great weekly TV and phenomenal PPV’s. Revolution and Double or Nothing both knocked it out of the park this year.

Souled Out is a perfect example of why doing something different just for the sake of being different is always a huge gamble. Likewise, it’s also a good example of how WCW would’ve benefitted from having someone to reign in Bischoff’s more grandiose tendencies even when they were killing it in the ratings. He’s always had a better head for the boardroom than the wrestling business, and he really put the cart before the horse by doing an nWo-branded PPV before having them take over Nitro.
If they this PPV in Late 97 instead of early 97, you wouldve had a much more slick ppv with a more prime Nwo.
Although nWo was still pretty fresh I think they had just missed the mark with the timing of this PPV. Also i agree it should have been a bigger event for example Imagine nWo Hog Wild (+actually selling tickets).

This video brought back so many amazing memories!!! I was a teenager at the time and watching the Monday Night Wars was at its peak. Every Monday was a treat at that time. WCW was beating the WWF every week for many weeks that WWF had to step up their game.

I liked this show when I was 11 years old, but in 98 I stopped watching wrestling when Scott Hall hit Goldberg with a cattle prod. In recent years NJPW and AEW have brought me back and I'm happy to call myself a wrestling fan again. It's funny now to look back on how mad I got when Goldberg lost, just goes to show how much of a mark I was, maybe WCW did do something right.

15:53 I know Konan was born in Cuba then grow up in Mexico ,but I didn't know he raised in Mexico back then. I was like in 4th or 5th grade so I likely thougth so back then ,but me now would think it be especially having a USA residence due to most WCW shows being in the USA.
They were chanting USA because both in the ring wern't from the USA. and the fans hated the match... makes perfect sence to me

My hat goes off to you my boy thank you for such interesting videos and catching up on old times I watched this wrestling and I think of my childhood I'm not watching it for hulk Hogan against ultimate warrior I'm watching it so I can remember what I was doing when I was seven years old watching hulk Hogan and ultimate warrior
I was one of those 170k that purchased this PPV and loved it. In kayfabe, it was exactly the kind of show I expected. The NWO were heels, and played dirty. So the shenanigans during the show were in line with them been cheating heels.

I liked the fact that there was so many members in the nwo. It was crazy to see who would jump and why. Also it made it fill like a real threat out taking over. Who is gonna beat a entire roster of guys with a group of 3 or 4?
I absolutely hated the New World Order when it was 1000 guys, I liked when it was Hogan, Nash, and Hall. But this intro was pure badass.

Scott Steiner dripped an f-bomb during their match that was caught on camera. Bischoff got pissed and broke character saying he’d be getting fined for that.
Honestly, what they should have done was did like a reverse of the normal WCW broadcasts. They should have done WCW "invade" the show and get a one up on them at the end of the show.
Sting dropping from the rafters sometime in the second half would have been fire. 🔥 😎

The nWo was definitely the genesis for other factions like DX, Evolution, the Main Event Mafia, Bullet Club, and so forth. They totally ruled the wrestling world and what they did in the 90s was truly revolutionary
Up here in Canada we did not have Monday night wars as raw was aired on mondays and wcw on another day
Oh man its was so hard wcw was so good and then the attitude eravon the same night my goodness as a 12 year old my mom would let us stay up to watch both next day at school all we talked about was wrestling man you missed out

the experiment didnt work but i always thought it was worth trying again. the idea sounded great at the time and i remember being all for it, it was the first and only wcw pay per view (though technically it wasnt wcw). the presentation itself left a lot to be desired. still i cant blame Eric for daring to try something new even though it came off as more odd and awkward than cool
Jeff Katz wasn't only a producer at New Line Cinema with Freddy vs Jason and Shoot Em Up, he proposed Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool after he stole the scenes as King in Blade 3. Unfortunately Katz would later work at Fox and unfortunately have to defend Wolverine Origins and their treatment of Wade Wilson having his mouth sewn shut.

An interest rose to watch this ppv & thank you for this match by match breakdown to show why that wouldn't be a good idea. Guerrero ( R.I.P. ) vs Syxx & The Outsiders vs The Steiners look like the only good matches. Syxx's jumping kick off the top of the ladder looked awesome! Surprised to see the crowd didn't pop for it. The production is reminiscent of V for Vendatta

I was a loyal WWF fan but I loved the nWo, this was the first non WWF PPV I ever bought. Watching it live my 16 year old self loved every minute of this show, in 2020...not so much.
25yrs later, i still remember and always will remember "The Mexican Jumping Bean.." followed by Eddie giving a firey babyface to the camera followed by "Loser.."
