Yeah that's a good shop. I work at a good shop, and it's a really nice feeling knowing your boss would be pissed if we ripped off a customer. The amount of shit our shop does just for the community is awesome, and the customers let us know year after year after year.

@@gingerd2098 There's an old saying "look after your customers an they will look after you for years to come".

Honestly, as some one who worked at a body shop - we wouldn't want to work on that first car, even for the full money. We'd recommend it even if it was a "dads old car". We'd try to convince them because otherwise it becomes quickly a multi-year project. That would be an insane amount of metal work that would take hundreds and hundreds of hours. Even if I wanted the money I'd still say no because it'd be years to get to it.

    • @DiabIe37

idk any decent shop that would take that job unless they were so shady it's the only job they could actually get.

@@DiabIe37 I know a shop that would do it and do a great job but it would involve a sit down with the owner and him basically telling you he will do what you want but he's being straight that it's going to make no sense for way too much money. He's done one or two jobs like that because he made absolutely sure they know what they are getting into and he knows what it's like to do it because of the memories. One was his dad's old Tornado who died of cancer and the other I know of was a cutlass for a guy whose son died.

My dad bought a Torino brand new and kept needing to replace tires from being worn abnormally. After fighting with the dealership he took it to a frame shop and they proved the car was crooked. I guess they had dropped the car off the semi when it was delivered to the dealership. After that they gave him another car. Hopefully all your stuff starts coming together. I started fixing up my dad's old Silverado Big 10 and I just gave up on some of the body parts and ordered new sheet metal. Old cars always take more effort than you originally anticipate. God damn a WHOLE INCH shorter on one side? that shell is fucking hacked, I whole heartedly support the shell swap. It would be so much work to fix it and get the suspension geometry right. The ripples in the floor are a death sentence for any car.
I hope it will be smooth sailing from now, Jay. Car resto is always such a gamble, and its especially hard when you dig into a car that an enthusiastic owner brought in for some light work and you find out the car is unsuitable for driving or repair. :(

Hey Jay, I've been subscribed to jayztwocents for quite some time now and I knew you were a car guy as well and finally checked this site out to find exactly what you were into. Low and behold you and I are not too different as I have a 5th gen that I have owned since 2010 with plenty of mods. Lovin' the ZL1 as I have a 2SS. Anyhow hope you have better luck with the new project, I know it can be a long battle as I helped my neighbor with his 68 RS which took 2 years to complete. He wanted black as well but eventually went with a gunmetal grey/silver which turned out beautifully and is much easier to manage than the black. Anyhow can't wait to follow along and see where you go with it, have fun!!!

The worst offender is 1973- 87 Chevy Pickup gauges, we are making those in the thousands. Jay gives the definition of "Project Car" to all of us that have ever done this and says "nope". If I had the space I'd probably take this off his hands, because that thing is in amazing shape for my area. Project cars are usually done for the learning and love of the vehicle, not necessarily for the "sentimental" value. Jay's definition of "Project Car" = "Mint Condition, all I have to do is bolt on race parts". I've seen cars in SO MUCH worse shape. Heck, ever seen Boyd Coddington? Sheesh, contact him Jay, maybe he'll take it off your hands. Project cars are rarely about sentiment, I think I know TWO out of maybe 200 people that have done resto's for sentimental reasons. If this was 5 years down the road I'd probably grab that old body because in 5 years my retirement shop will be looking for projects, but until then...yea, no room and I'm not going to pay $100+/month to store that thing for 5 years waiting.

This is gonna be a 6 and half figure car... Damn Jay, glad you're doing it right. Sorry about the '67. After doing a '77 Trans Am I understand all to well the struggle of a restoration.

Should turn the '67 into a burnout beater and colab with ol' Cleetus McFarland. I would be over-the-moon giddy to see two of my favorite TH-camrs from different niches getting together to wreak some havoc :D

I don't know if you talked about it in a previous video or not but I'm new to the car channel. What sort of powertrain are you going with? Big block? LS? I hope you stick a T56 in there either way. That would be awesome.
EDIT: Never mind. Further in the video you said you're putting a slushbox in there. It's your car I guess lol ;) Also saw the vids of the LS7 you built for the project. That should be sick.

Better to get things right at this point in the project than trying to fix it down the road. That's why we're still in the engineering phase of my 69 Newport Convertible / 71 Imperial build.

Dont be disheartened... Almost all older cars have some skeletons in their trunks... Case in point. Ur 68 will be so worth it in the end it will be all worth while. Can't wait to see the final product! Subscribed.

I hope people learn from this and have any classic car inspected by a reputable body shop before you buy it. It's way to easy to hide rust and other structural issues.

Stuff like this gets so out of hand visiting a buddy at his shop and we walk over to his old shop there is 400k+ cars that just keep spending year after year in shop. One was a former cover car in the late 90s scratched the subframe in a parking lot it got blown apart and still it sits 20 years later at probably over 750k

you should consider vinyl wrapping the car with clear paint protection film when you paint it. It will deepen the color, especially black, and it will make it last way longer. and if it gets damaged you can just peel it and re-wrap that spot.

Yep I have had this happen twice to me. Got it to sandblast and the 70 Chevelle and the 63 Galaxie projects I was doing died. But I didnt have a safety net... If you ever do a 1970 Chevelle Jay I have some good headlight trim panels.
