    On the next episode of Jays 67 Camaro project: “The 4l60 failed again so now we’re swapping in a 4l80 which we should have done in the first place”. The content is great Jay and you’re doing your car how you want to do it, keep up the good work.

    • @Jayztwocents
      @Jayztwocents 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It’s not a 4L60. It’s. 2004R and yes we are changing the transmission entirely

    • @erict9220
      @erict9220 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JayzTwoCents I figured the current trans was either a 700r or 200r since you have a gen II small block. I was commenting on your statement about building a 4l60 with the LS7. I like your plan for eliminating the “e” portion, it would pair nicely with your initial carbureted plan, but anything over 550tq and the 4l60 will have the same planetary issues as the 200r is having now. Plus the sun shell is very weak and tends to break under high tq. It will live for a bit but the money spent to make it “bulletproof “ would be better spent on a 4L80.

    • @overdrivesgarage7030
      @overdrivesgarage7030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@erict9220 I agree, don't bother with 4l60e, go 4l80e. Your plan for eliminating the "e" can still work on the 4l80e. I don't know how it's done but there are simple controllers that some people even make themselves for their street/strip cars running 4l80 that make them manual control. 4l60 is famous for failing even when built. 4l80 is famous for being pulled from a junkyard, thrown behind a turbo ls and running at least low 10's with no mods besides a converter and maybe a HD2 kit.

    • @jamesjonesphotography
      @jamesjonesphotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've built 4l60e for vehicles over 1000hp but it's really expensive making them reliable. 4l80 is stronger but also alot heavier. I prefer the idea of building 4l60 for racing because of this weight difference.

    • @overdrivesgarage7030
      @overdrivesgarage7030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesjonesphotography Makes sense. 4l60e is close to 100lbs lighter, I'm sure a bunch less parasitic loss, makes sense for racing where you're looking for every advantage. My comment about "4l60 is famous for failing even when built" was about the more common "supposedly 500-700hp capable" builds, not the "Stage 5 with billet everything" type of build. Throwing enough money at a problem does fix it sometimes. For those without pockets that deep and/or willing to take the weight penalty without as extensive of a trans build the 4l80e makes a lot of sense for them. Either way Jay has the parts already and made a comment here about Red Barn's Camaro having a 4l60e taking 700hp for over 100 1/4 miles passes so I'm curious to see what goes in it.

    Yea, the shift kits can be rough on the street but on the strip using the turbo 400 shifting hard nothing like hearing the slicks bark going into second and feel it set you back in the seat. I thought about running a manual kit but I stuck with the auto manual kit. Leave it in drive it would shift but it took out all of the safety lockouts so it would hold the gears until you were ready to shift up and if you wanted to be flying down the road and drop a gear it would.

    Technically the 4L60E is just a renamed updated/refined version of the 700R4 and i think they had the same case even up till 1997 when they switched to a two piece case the following year, I have heard of the planetary gear sets in the the 700R4 transmissions not being able to handle a lot of power and failing before too.

    2004R gets a bad wrap but it's only because they are never set up right! If the TV cable isn't adjusted properly the trans will eat itself. Otherwise they're stout and can take a beating. Also I'm assuming the car currently has a turbo 350 in it since you talked about it winding down. I love that sound. lol

    Be careful with the positive traction rear end. Many cars have met their demise because of positive traction and a slight curve in the road. It's only good for straight-line acceleration and nothing else. If resto-mod is your goal, I'd seriously consider electronically controlled limited slip instead.
