I'd say vulcan and andorians are pretty toe to toe on who was the best "friend" of united earth.
Keep in mind that all "good" encouters between humans and andorians were actually just Shren who wanted to not owe Archer any kind of favors.
Some andorians actually actively tried to stage a war between them and the vulcans and attacked Archer and his shuttle.
Shren wasn't send into the expanse to help the Enterprise. He was sent there to get the xindi weapon prototype. Him helping the Enterprise was just a lucky encounter and, in the end, another helpful act by Shren as a person, not his government. Even the final battle at earth was just Shren on his personal mission to help archer because, let's be clear, if it was really the andorian government ordering him they would've send more than 1 ship.
So on one hand we got Shren but who would be representative for the vulcans? Well T'Pol certainly comes to mind. Sure she was reluctant when she first got assigned to Enterprise but she also saw the potential that the humans had in them.
But vulcans also didn't just mostly sit back but actively helped Archer and the Enterprise multiple times. For example one vulcan cruiser got severely damaged by tholian ships when it tried to aid the enteprise after having found an time capsule. A vulcan ship pulled Reed and Mayweather's shuttle with a tractor beam off an icy moon before the two would freeze to death. They disabled three mazarite ships that attacked Enterprise. (Granted the mazarites attacked Enteprise only because they had a vulcan ambassador on board but still they came and aided them instead of just watching from far away)
That list could certainly be expanded on how andorians and vulcans compare to each other or how Shren and T'Pol compare to each other. But after all that's not just a simple question. Yes, the vulcans kept a watchful eye over earth and were sometimes kind of an overprotective grandparent. But they also helped earth and enterprise and some of their advise would become keystones of the federation.
Most notable of all the General Order 1: "No starship may interfere with the normal development of any alien life or society."
If that's not vulcan style i don't know what is.

i agree with what you say as it now flows in canon... but iv always been bothered by spocks statement in balance of terror... the war was fought with primitive ships with no visual communication just radio transmissions etc.. what im tryna say is in enterprise i would have preferred to watch humans discover and make their own mistakes which would have led to a war... and it was going that way ... but the temporal cold war was left open and they ddnt like that.. so the xindi arc was created to close that and they killed two birds with the forming of the federation at the end.. do not quote me on that i read that on reddit lol

Vulcans (as a group) do tend to be insufferably arrogant, superior, and manipulative. Capable of easily justifying even the most treacherous, deceptive, or distasteful ethics through their "logic". Indeed their behaviour is nearly identical to Romulans overall, they're just more rarified and less obvious/menacing about it.
No wonder Humans and Andorians (and basically everyone else) ends up mistrusting and conflicting with Vulcans.

Because "good" Klingons replaced them - also a culture driven by tradition, but far more awsome. If the Star Trek gived more atantion to Andorians, the result would be probably the space centrist conservatists - only unocupied place that fits to them. Telarites are to annoying to watch them regulary, as they are like our politicians - disgusting creatures sometimes.

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Tellarites are ugly, repulsive, noxious things. But the same was true of Ferengi. Yet Quark (and Rom and others) became likeable and interesting characters. After a while.
I think a Tellarite could become a likeable sort of character, a great source of creative insults and stubborn gruffness. Enough to make the whole species seem kinda cool.
If played by someone like Jeffrey Combs (Shran, Weyoun, Brunt) or Andrew Robinson (Garak). Not if played by someone irritating like Ethan Phillips (Neelix).
Remember how ridiculous Andorians looked before they were given serious attention in ENT. Tellarites just haven't had any spotlight yet.

    • @OllamhDrab
      @OllamhDrab 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@pwnmeisterage Actually the Andorians looked *great* in TOS, especially compared to Tellarites. TNG kept sneaking in almost-Andorians just to tweak a producer's nose for declaring 'No Blue People with antennae.' The Enterprise version really did look great, though. (I had trepidation when they said restyle, and I still haven't looked at Discovery cause someone said, "I know better than all you Trek fanatics, I'm changing everything!" Honestly, they *marketed* Enterprise like that and got it cancelled just when they were starting to make some of it make sense.)

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@OllamhDrab STD has briefly shown one or two Andorians, styled roughly like they were in ENT though with far-too-bright cobalt blue and somewhat harsher "alien" features.
But they were really just stuffed into the background as a shoutout, like the tribble on Lorca's desk, attempting to legitimize the show as Trek lore to the vehemently hateful fans.
Also briefly featured was a clearly Andorian space/combat suit - worn by badass Harry Mudd during his assault on the ship - which I admit actually looked pretty awesome.

All Soval wanted to do was demand to know why Archer hadn't done more to save that zombie ship they stumbled upon. The Vulcans weren't really that good of allies pre federation. The first few eps of Enterprise drove home that they were more focused on keeping humans from "progressing too fast" than helping us. Seems more like they were trying to keep a threat close and in check. They wouldn't even help search the Delphic Expanse when earth faced certain doom and this was nearly a century after first contact. The Andorians are hands down the best friends of pre federation Earth. Sure Shran had his own motivations but would listen to reason and didn't treat humans as inferior to the extent Vulcans did. They were also much more willing to risk themselves to help humans out. They were better friends to humans within a year of first contact than Vulcans were in a century. As for the war mongering it really seemed to me that the Vulcans carried the lion's share of the blame for the conflict between them, not honoring the treaty etc. TL;DR The Andorians were true friends to us while Vulcans treated us like peasants. Great vid

Things would've worked out very differently for Vulcans if Earth's first contact was with Andorians ... enough in itself to suggest their arrival was a calculated move.
But apparently Earth humans just don't have the temperament to be compatible with the idea of subjugation within a Vulcan Hegemony.
I do wonder, since canon is so sparse about it, what sort of relationships the Romulans have with the "many" species they assimilate into their interstellar empire.

Considering Andoria is an ice ball they may not be physically comfortable in what would be considered normal "room temperature" for humans.
Telerites complained a lot about being cold on Enterprise so they would stick to their own ships which would be warmer.
Though the real reason would probably be that other aliens were easier/less time consuming to get the actors into costume

That reminds me of something i never understoud. When the 2nd xindi weapon attacked earth why was there virtually nothing there to stop it. Earth knew this was coming, maybe not exactly when, but they knew. But when your entire civilization is at risk you throw together whatever you can, like b5's battle of the line

It's one of the stupidly common tropes of star trek where the "hero" ship is the only one in range ever.
The only possible reasonable explanation would be the other Earth ships we see when Enterprise returns to Earth after the first weapon is they were evacuating as much of the population as possible.
But you'd think there would be some sort of planetary defences put into place

    • @jawstrock2215

The only militarized ship at the time is the Enterprise, and it was already trying on a mission.
Just remember how much problem they had with weapons in the early seasons, thinking they wouldn't need them.
But by the time Columbia is finished, Archer had recommended heavy armaments to put in place for self defense.
Earth was mostly defenseless at that time period.
And they could barely make new ships. Most other space ship were cargo ships, with minimal weaponry. They could have used it, but, yeah..

The same held true during the Earth-Romulan War just prior to the formation of the Federation, where Andoria was UE’s greatest ally and the only members of the Coalition of Planets to honor the mutual defense pact; Tellar wanted no part in the fighting, and Vulcan became extremely reclusive during the conflicts with their not-yet-revealed (and desperate to keep secret) genetic cousins.

A big brother on the other hand is afraid to squander the rest of his life, and isn't willing to go that extra bit to help you out.

Oddly before the first contact with the Andorians, some members of the Vulcan High Command were under the influence of the Romulans. The Romulans were involved in some of the internal affairs of the Vulcans. The Romulans had tried to cause a war between the Andorians and the Tellarites. Unfortunately, the Romulans had underestimated the power and influence which the Humans have. After the Earth-Romulan War, the Romulans have decided to become more isolated until they have reappear in the TOS series timeline of 2266 C.E. Oddly the Andorians were a better friend for the humans.

I always forget about the Andorians, as they're rarely mentioned in Trek for no good reason. I'd love to see a Fed/And/Klink task force engage the in some coordinated battle against the romulans or some shit like that. I also feel like the Klingons and the Andorians would probably get along quite well, with the Humans as mediators.

We keep seeing starships named Enterprise which are captained and crewed by humans. Always a token Vulcan onboard. Sometimes also a small smattering of other aliens.
But it would be cool to see other starships belonging to other Star Trek races. Maybe a token human or Vulcan onboard, maybe not.
An Andorian ship, Klingon, Romulan? Perhaps episodic interactions/conflicts following each of them, _Wrath of Khan_ style battles, etc.

I think the reasoning for why vulcans were so aggressive with the blue skins, is because of romulans. Remember at the end they were trying to reunify but it failed. I would say that high command was corrupt in someway to strive for this, and use andorians as a scapgoat for aggression.

I really like your videos I had an idea for one that might be up your ally. A potential analysis on the soong family mainly data's family. So I mean if not been deactivate what potential or impact could these characters of played maybe for star trek of other species.
For example lore if still alive and working with borg what may have happened...
B4 maybe a future in starfleet like data but with different skills like command?
Lal, though short lived she had amazing potential with natural emotional ability as well as mental simular to her father's.
Juliana Tainer although I don't believe her story would change much if she did know she was an android would she of chosen a new path .. perhaps live with data on enterprise or reactavate lore and be the mother he never had.
And data if not killed could we see a admiral data ... with his new emotions chip would be attempted to create a new child?
I'm sure there's many other ways this could go aswell.

In the 30+ years I followed Star Trek, the Andorians are and were always the more "human" species. Were they warmongers or saviors? They were both, just like humans. They always saw them in us and vice versa. They were more military in their efforts into space, knowing full well the dangers of space travel. Of the 3 founding non-human races of the (misnamed human) United Federation of Planets, they are supposed to be aspects of us in the storytelling part. The stubborn arguers (Tellarites) who never give up, the arrogant scientists who view most "lessers" as children to be guided (Vulcan) and the warlike brothers in arms (Andorians).

In most of the description, you often say the Andorian helped, or were friendly to the Humans,m but I think it was actually Shran's friendship with Archer.
You never see either race interact other then with those 2 captains. Shran speaks on behave of the Human, and Archer does the same for the Andorians.
The vulcans already have Embassy on Earth, and I think Earth already has it's embassy on vulcan? So they do have more formal relation. No such thing with the Andorians.
We even see the Andorian government to be far more against helping the humans, unless Shran comes and pleads to go help, or just take the decision on himself.

Nobody in ST is without their flaws, just look at the hubris of the federation and their so-called evolved sensibilities.
The Andorians, much like the Ferengi, have faults that are much more relatable faults to John Q Public, while (to me at least), it would seem that you need to be a monk to be more relatable to the Vulcans than the Andorians. Arguably this could be a good explanation to why many people would like the Andorians as a race, as well as why a person can make a fairly good (and convincing to me) argument for them over the Vulcans.
Just a random thought anyways; something I see as similar to the reaction in many Mass Effect fans in liking the Turians over any of the other major players in that franchise.... Perhaps it boils down to what level of familiarity exists within a fantastical setting such as those in fantasy and sci-fi..... think the connection with realworld styles of attack and defense in the fighter defense and lightsaber combat in SW for a pretty well known example of what I mean here.
(Edited to add blank lines between the 3 sections of what I had to say.)
(Edit #2: I should point out that "relatable" & "likable" are not one in the same, I'm looking at the Ferengi here.)
