    I feel for any localizers who miss a joke or reference.
    Must be annoying to wrap on a project and later have it pointed out to you.
    (Side note, if anyone's wondering why fan translations seem much better at catching references, especially ones to mythology, it's because fan translations don't have the concept of "deadlines".)

    • @mads_in_zero
      @mads_in_zero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@GeeCee-pv7ik I'm defending translators, not corporations.
      Like I said, fan translations often get small references better due to having no deadline. Likewise, the problem with most bad translations isn't lack of skill by the translator, but lack of time given by the corporation who hired them.
      This is also why buggy video games happen. Nobody _wants_ to ship a game full of bugs (unless they're aiming for the bargin bin on purpose), but at a certain point it becomes a question of just getting the game out the door.

      Which is why everyone seems to do nothing but heap undeserved hatred on Ted Woolsey despite the fact that he did the best he could.
      Like, fun fact, he actually initially wrote a script TWICE as long for Final Fantasy III (aka 6), but it literally could not fit with text space restrictions, so he was forced to basically re-write the entire game again from scratch, at the last minute.

    Translation is an art. I just wished companies would actually let them have the time to actually research and understand the work they are translating. I'm in the camp of preferring an appropriate translation than a 100% "faithful one".

    • @mads_in_zero
      @mads_in_zero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Time and money for the translator are honestly the two biggest factors in a good translation. That second game shown in the video _reeks_ of the company paying as little as possible for bottom of the barrel prices, or perhaps even a machine TL (how else do you end up with "prostitute" in a kid friendly game?!)

    • @Robbie_Haruna
      @Robbie_Haruna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There's a distinct difference between a translation and a localization. When you half ass the latter (whether it be just because of money or time lacking,) it suffers, but when done well it's much better than a plain jane translation could give us.
      If you don't and put out something like Selfy Collection then it becomes a gigantic meme.

    3:15 This isn't really a mistranslation. A 'tit' is a type of bird that belongs to the Sparrow order and is just a common bird name. The Long-tailed tit is native to Europe and North Asia and not even a rare sight at that. I guess that it sounds funny when combined with the 'honey sucking' (tits are insectivores to my knowledgde) but it's not really a mistranslation as it is just a funny name.
    All the other names are definetely transliterated though and absolutely hilarious.

    • @Interference22
      @Interference22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      In line with what the video states near the beginning, it seems less a translation issue and more a *localization* issue: it's one thing to accurately interpret the word as "tit" in English, but it's another to realise the direct translation might sound unintentionally hilarious in some locales and something else should be used instead.

    The info about Captain Toad at 8:06 seems to have ended up a bit garbled.
    'Onward' and 'Advance', which are mentioned as being the difference, are actually both just different translations to the word 'susume'.
    In the Japanese version, the game title and the chapter title are both 'susume kinopio-taichou'.
    So the localisers translated the chapter title, but localised the game's title, and as a result, they no longer match.
    Maybe it can be considered an 'added easter egg', in that translating that part made it no longer match the localised title.
    But it wasn't an invention of the localisers, and there's probably plenty of other games where something in the Japanese title (that was localised out of the English title) still ends up turning up in the actual game.

      This reminds me of some stuff in world of warcraft. Most skeleton enemies are swapped with humans and other races, gory remains and carcasses are removed or swapped with things like candles and bread in the Chinese release.
      Why the bread? So throughout the world in some cities and inns, there are kitchens with slabs of meat, ribs, bones etc in western releases. In the Chinese version they simply replaced these with loaves of bread which make sense in these contexts. However, these assets are reused in necromancer areas to show gore and whatnot. The replacement is just applied to all uses of the models regardless of location. What's also amusing, some large undead monsters carry around huge bones as weapons. These are also turned into bread.

    Translation can be sometimes tricky. I mean, there it is the eternal conflict of Latin America's Spanish and Portuguese vs. European Spanish and Portuguese, which, despite being the very same languages, are used very differently in those regions, thus why there's always two Spanish and Portuguese dubs or translations, one for Latin America and one for Spain and Portugal. Sadly, some companies still doesn't understand those regional and cultural differences, and some games are released in Latin America with a European dub/translation, such as the case of Pokémon, where the fans are now making a worthy campaign for the making of an Spanish and Portuguese translation of the games for the Latin American market. Definitely check out Legends Arceus. It's without a shred of doubt the single best thing to happen to the series since it's debut. It feels like the series finally got it's very own Ocarina of Time and finally stepped into the world of 3D proper. Faster, more convenient gameplay loop, less slowdowns with fights, bigger world that actually feels alive compared to the previous formula.
    Highly recommended to try it out, if you're on the fence it emulates quite well...

    Majority of the translations in the selfie game are transliterations, not localizations, because they don't take into consideration the grammar, context, or appropriateness of the language they're being translated to, they're just literal translations. Isn't that what the anti-localization crowd wanted? Translation without localization? Because that makes good content, right??

    • @mads_in_zero
      @mads_in_zero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@otaking3582 If you're gonna mention the Game Corner, the Australian versions of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum actually still have the it, despite otherwise being the same as the PAL versions.
      Though rather than an M rating, this gave the games a PG rating (as opposed to the rest of the Pokemon series firmly being G rated). I guess the Australian Ratings board has just gotten stricter with this rule over time, gambling earning a PG for a DS game but an M for a Switch release.
      I can sort of understand why Australia's so harsh on gambling in kids games though. We have a long tradition of "Country Clubs", where you can get cheap steaks and wine supported by a sea of oppertunities to gamble while you're there. The less kids are familiar with slot machines when they've probably seen some in real life, the better.
      Would be nice if they were equally as strict with lootboxes though...

  • @SorcererLance

    Kind of a blind assumption here... perhaps China wasn't really cool with the "POW" blocks because they could also be interpreted as the English acronym for "Prisoner Of War"?

    I think when someone points out a problem in the translation or a lack of a joke or reference, this is more of a show on the company's doing rather than the translator. Translators are just doing what they can and I think that's what everyone thinks. (Some comments are defending translators but I don't think anyone was shaming them. I'm sure any translator knows that not all idioms or jokes can be fully expressed in a translator smoothly and I'm sure they're fine.)
    I will say the second game did give MTL vibes since it felt so direct in translation

    Here's a case of game translation that actually worked really well In the form of a brand new joke:
    In Sly 4: Thieves In Time, During the mission where you spread speakers across Madam Decibel's office In the effort of distracting her with rock music, Salim Al Cupar makes the humorous comment "It makes sense, The Rok-bird does eat elephants." The Rok is a giant bird originating from arabian legends from it's middle ages known for itXs invincibility and ability to lift up massive animals with it's strong claws. It simply fitted so well with the context that the translators couldn't pass their chance.

    Someone seriously needs to do a study on whether simulated gambling in video games has any correlation with real life gambling addictions. Much like the myth that video games cause violence, I assume it probably doesn't in the slightest.

    • @goranisacson2502

      From my own anecdotal obersvations, it depends. Simply having a card game in a game, probably isn't gonna have an effect. But if a game includes stuff like gacha mechanics, which is very similar to stuff like slots, then they will use features that are very similar to what actual slot machines use in order to trigger people with addictive personalities into spending more and more. There's apparently been studies into that (which I admit I haven't read, but have seen referenced in enough articles and statements onmine by actual psychologists that I kinda just take them for granted), which say that slot machines and gacha games alike use sounds, graphical effects and coercive messages which are all aimed to affect the addictive personalities mindset and send them into the adrenaline / dopamine releasing spiral that sees them gamble again and again, just one more spin, JUST ONE MORE SPIN, that can have them lose far more money than they consciously would have if those effects weren't present.
      So yes- I don't think the presence of card games alone can affect people. It's card games with the specifics of a casino around them, with the particular allures and attractions casino owners (and gacha developers) have put into them to guide people to a path where they spend and spend and spend, that are dangerous and merits an 18+ rating.

    I believe the official pronunciation of Arceus was the one on the video, but it was later changed to "Ar-kay-us". The reason (that I'm not sure it's true), is to avoid the similar sound to "arse".

      The director of the English dub for the anime at the time said that was why they changed it to a K for the Arceus movie's English dub. As for "Ar-say-us," it's closer to "Ar-say-oos," which is really how Aruseusu should be pronounced after "translation" from Japanese.
