It seems there was some legal trouble that prevented Nintendo from selling it anymore.

Out of all the games on here I think that cancelled Boo game looked the most interesting at least from a visual standpoint it really stands out compared to most other Mario spinoffs.
That’s a way to look at it. But it was a different world back then and multi platform games were pretty rare. The architecture of the pa1 and n64 were not similar. Even the controllers were very, very different in those days. Plus, the 3D platform market was pretty full on the n64 as opposed to pa1, where it was pretty wide open when croc came out.
It appeared to have a lot more to do with the fact that Nintendo and Argonaut decided to go separate ways, and the fact that Star Fox 2 (like Earthbound Zero before it on the NES) was cancelled because it was going to come out too close to the initially planned launch of the N64. That seems more accurate given the idea for the 3D platforming Yoshi game never progressed beyond pre-production planning and pitching stage (it would be petty to get angry at your co-developer/publisher for not giving the go-ahead for a project that had little work done on it). In fact, members of Argonaut who had worked with Nintendo like Dylan Cuthbert, who was one of the key developers of Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, and Star Fox 2, actually left Argonaut to work more closely with Nintendo and Sony (helping co-develop Blasto for the PS1), before founding Q-Games (which was responsible for Star Fox Command, Star Fox 64 3D, and a number of original titles like PixelJunk).

Smash's violence is very cartoony and stylized, whereas the violence in Spikers from those demo animations seemed a little more brutal. Take Waluigi's stomp at 24:23. In Smash, Mario would've bounced away with smoke trailing behind him instead of just flopping back on the ground as if he's dead. But then again it could just be company bias.
Smash bros is just over the top cartoon violence where characters get launched across the stratosphere and blast off team rocket style. You can literally fight people with a stick and umbrella. Spikers looked to go for more psuedo-realistic wrestling vibe.
I love how Phillips weren't happy with companies work but then you look at the work they actually released and its mind-blowing 😂 those demos must have been terrible.

I was looking at the Boo Haunt concept art and some of this is real freaky! For some reason, there's art of an angry Boo in the shape of the Star of David and using a menorah as a weapon. There's also a Boo crucified.
A full movement, 3D Mario FPS could be a lot of fun. Banjo-Tooie showed how to do a fun, kid-friendly shooter and Splatoon of course did it in 3rd person.

I've been working on a video covering every cancelled Mario game for about two months now. It's only about halfway done but man, I'm so gutted lol. I noticed nobody else had really made a video covering all of them, so I tried to jump on it. Obviously this is much better than what I could put together, and you guys dug some stuff up that I would never be able to. Great video! I'll finish mine still but man... Edit2: I think I remember a few years ago CGP Grey uploaded a video and one of the VSauce channels immediately went "well dang we were working on the same topic". From what I saw, the viewers overwhelmingly wanted them to finish and release the video anyway. Consumers consume, and niche consumers consume niche consumables. More detailed videos are always in demand regardless of whether they've been done before. Hell I've watched three videos about the Famicom Disk System today and loved them all. Don't feel discouraged.
Just doooo it- do your own thing, there are hundreds of thousands of videos that cover either the same or similar topics as everything and anything- and those don't get any less love just because "Somebody else did it" ...it'll still get your experience going, your content out, and you'll still have accomplished something regardless!
You can differ if you dont go for just all facts. Add your touch to it and perhaps make it comedic. The fact that there is only this video and no one else taking a different way to talk about it leaves more opportunity than you think
Nintendo really just seems to hate doing anything fun and creative for Mario, anything out of the norm for his branding. Nintendo is so stupidly weird, they’ll release something as on-brand as Super Mario 3D World and then release the largely subversive Super Mario Odyssey as the next title. Super Paper Mario was the most beyond-Mario RPG of all time, and then they follow it with Sticker Star, the most standard-Mario RPG of all time. They reject ID Software’s Super Mario Bros 3 PC port because it wasn’t on their hardware, yet they permitted Hotel Mario for the CDI and the Mario Edutainment games for the MS-DOS (Mario is Missing for MS-DOS gave us the inspiration for Weegee). They also won’t have Sonic and Mario in a platformer together, but they will have Mario and Rabbids in a turn-based strategy game. They won’t allow for Wario Pool for the GBC, but they will allow Mario Pinball for the GBA. And they won’t allow Mario games to have violent wrestling but they’re okay with Mario in Smash Bros, a game series that’s mostly T for Teen. Whoever is running Nintendo seems to be random every time they give permission for a game, it’s like quantum particles that collapse into a random state when observed.

They did release Yoshi's Cookie on Virtual Console for the original Wii. I know this because when the Internet Channel was made free, those who had paid for the channel (myself included) were offered one free Virtual Console game of their choice as compensation, and that was the game I chose to get.

The Haunt game is definitely one of the weirdest entries. Honestly I like the combination of the Yoshi’s Island + Super Mario Sunshine artstyle, but it seems arbitrary to attach it to a Mario side character than just making an original franchise entirely. It’s like if Sega wanted to make a platformer with the Porcupo enemy from Super Mario Bros 2 instead of just making their own original blue hedgehog character, it seems absurdly risky to pitch an original game idea with an original art style and then try to loosely tie it to the Mario series for no reason. In fact, trying to tie in a Boo school that’s fighting off witches would only add more confusion and contradiction to the nightmare of the Mario canon, it would be easier to have it in a separate universe entirely. You wouldn’t even need to change the character designs, the Yoshi’s Island and Super Mario Sunshine designs for Boos haven’t been used in 26 and 19 years respectively, and no one is going to complain (or sue) that the ghost designs resemble the Boo designs that were specifically used in two games each and then never designed like that again. Also, I just realized how absurd it is that a game starring a Boo has been closer to getting their own game than Bowser, Daisy, and Waluigi ever have; at least the Boo game was pitched and had great concept art before it got scrapped, the latter ideas haven’t even been suggested!
Actually, a game like Haunt would probably do very well, with the increasing popularity of Boo that I've been seeing recently. Boo is a cute character, and this seems like a cute AU concept which I could see a lot of people getting hyped for. Especially since spooky/horror themes do really well in this day and age. That's just my opinion, though. I personally would have played it!

To be fair, the animations in Spikers did look more violent than any seen in Smash.
@@braydengraves4655 Smash could be seen more as "over the top" violent action while Spikers looked like they were really inflicting pain on the other characters the way Waluigi stomped on Mario and Yoshi threw the other Yoshi to the ground XD

I've been working on a video covering every cancelled Mario game for about two months now. It's only about halfway done but man, I'm so gutted lol. I noticed nobody else had really made a video covering all of them, so I tried to jump on it. Obviously this is much better than what I could put together, and you guys dug some stuff up that I would never be able to. Great video! I'll finish mine still but man... Edit2: I think I remember a few years ago CGP Grey uploaded a video and one of the VSauce channels immediately went "well dang we were working on the same topic". From what I saw, the viewers overwhelmingly wanted them to finish and release the video anyway. Consumers consume, and niche consumers consume niche consumables. More detailed videos are always in demand regardless of whether they've been done before. Hell I've watched three videos about the Famicom Disk System today and loved them all.

Just doooo it- do your own thing, there are hundreds of thousands of videos that cover either the same or similar topics as everything and anything- and those don't get any less love just because "Somebody else did it" ...it'll still get your experience going, your content out, and you'll still have accomplished something regardless!
You can differ if you dont go for just all facts. Add your touch to it and perhaps make it comedic. The fact that there is only this video and no one else taking a different way to talk about it leaves more opportunity than you think
Nintendo really just seems to hate doing anything fun and creative for Mario, anything out of the norm for his branding. Seeing something like Waluigi stomping on Mario is so friggin' goofy, shame they disapproved of such obviously cartoony violence.

Nintendo is so stupidly weird, they’ll release something as on-brand as Super Mario 3D World and then release the largely subversive Super Mario Odyssey as the next title. Super Paper Mario was the most beyond-Mario RPG of all time, and then they follow it with Sticker Star, the most standard-Mario RPG of all time. They reject ID Software’s Super Mario Bros 3 PC port because it wasn’t on their hardware, yet they permitted Hotel Mario for the CDI and the Mario Edutainment games for the MS-DOS (Mario is Missing for MS-DOS gave us the inspiration for Weegee). They also won’t have Sonic and Mario in a platformer together, but they will have Mario and Rabbids in a turn-based strategy game. They won’t allow for Wario Pool for the GBC, but they will allow Mario Pinball for the GBA. And they won’t allow Mario games to have violent wrestling but they’re okay with Mario in Smash Bros, a game series that’s mostly T for Teen. Whoever is running Nintendo seems to be random every time they give permission for a game, it’s like quantum particles that collapse into a random state when observed.
Tbh during that Era they did plenty with mario there were rpgs,fighting ,racing ,tennis and prolly somethin else I'm missing besides platforming

They did release Yoshi's Cookie on Virtual Console for the original Wii. I know this because when the Internet Channel was made free, those who had paid for the channel (myself included) were offered one free Virtual Console game of their choice as compensation, and that was the game I chose to get.

Some fans do that nowadays. Though it rarely, if ever, pays off. Like those devs who made a whole remake of the first Mortal Kombat trilogy and then pitched the project to Netherrealm Studios/Warner Games, only for them to drag their feet and then say "no".
It was done so they could show a demo as an example to the company to help a pitch.

The only things that are left from co-op thing for Mario 64 are the assets for Luigi that seems to be more related to a late in development project since those were found in a iQue folder with SFX for future games like the Mario Advance series but other people says this dates from the beta development of the original Mario 64...

The Haunt game is definitely one of the weirdest entries. Honestly I like the combination of the Yoshi’s Island + Super Mario Sunshine artstyle, but it seems arbitrary to attach it to a Mario side character than just making an original franchise entirely. It’s like if Sega wanted to make a platformer with the Porcupo enemy from Super Mario Bros 2 instead of just making their own original blue hedgehog character, it seems absurdly risky to pitch an original game idea with an original art style and then try to loosely tie it to the Mario series for no reason. In fact, trying to tie in a Boo school that’s fighting off witches would only add more confusion and contradiction to the nightmare of the Mario canon, it would be easier to have it in a separate universe entirely.
You wouldn’t even need to change the character designs, the Yoshi’s Island and Super Mario Sunshine designs for Boos haven’t been used in 26 and 19 years respectively, and no one is going to complain (or sue) that the ghost designs resemble the Boo designs that were specifically used in two games each and then never designed like that again.
Also, I just realized how absurd it is that a game starring a Boo has been closer to getting their own game than Bowser, Daisy, and Waluigi ever have; at least the Boo game was pitched and had great concept art before it got scrapped, the latter ideas haven’t even been suggested!
Actually, a game like Haunt would probably do very well, with the increasing popularity of Boo that I've been seeing recently. Boo is a cute character, and this seems like a cute AU concept which I could see a lot of people getting hyped for. Especially since spooky/horror themes do really well in this day and age. That's just my opinion, though. I personally would have played it!
@@AmbrosiusAmaimon Though it's different, I see the complications that would arrive from OP's argument. Cuteness and character design is great for marketing, but those factors have very little to do with the flawed design concepts they were to utilize.
Haunt did have crucified boos. That probably had a hand in its cancellation.

It seems like most of these games are 3rd parties making demos with Mario characters and pitching them to Nintendo and then getting rejected.
It's hypocritical for Nintendo to reject the idea of Mario Spikers on the basis that it's "too violent" when they have the Super Smash Bros. franchise.

The fact that there has never been a game where Mario uses a plunger as a melee weapon despite him supposedly being a plumber is insane, it seems like the easiest connection to make
