The Gospel of Joey Wheeler, Yu-Gi-Oh's Greatest Duelist | I PROVE Joey is Better Than KAIBA and YUGI

  • Welcome back! In this video I am spreading the good word of Joey Wheeler, or Katsuya Jounouchi in the original Japanese. Joey is without doubt one of the greatest duelists throughout the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, but due to jokes and memes and general badmouthing on the part of one particularly wealthy character it seems that audiences and fans just don't want to respect Joey! I'm here to spread the information in attempt to open fans eyes to Joey's true greatness as a duelist!

Months later and this is still getting comments about Joey just being lucky, which is frankly a dumb comment when Yugi’s power literally manipulates the deck to give him what he needs.
ALL card games come down to luck because you are needing luck to help you in drawing what hand you need to accomplish what you need to win. The way to turn the tide of luck in your direction is to know the rules of whatever game you’re playing, and building a deck where your cards work so well with each other that luck seems to always be on your side since you always seem to draw what you need. That’s what Joey has done. His early deck doesn’t work at all because he doesn’t understand the game and how to build a deck that works well with itself.
Further, I literally provide context of the author STATING that Joey is the best duelist in the series. So if you’re arguing against me you’re also arguing against Takahashi. No cap. 🤷‍♀️

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Joey is the original F2P! my men didn't have a grandpa to give him rare cards like Yugi or be rich like Kaiba. He literally was salvaging cards and even used battle city cards that he won from weevil, Espa roba, and Mako tsunami. They should have done a whole show about Joey being the main character but instead we got Yu-Gi-Oh GX (which I love).

  • @babylonshadows1877
    @babylonshadows1877 4 ปีที่แล้ว +357

    You missed a few points.
    - Yugi got his deck from his grandfather, not only did he have objectively powerful cards, but this is also the deck of a person WHO SELLS CARDS FOR A LIVING. So Yugis deck was already above average from the get go.
-Yugi gives a copy of Time Wizard to Joey which is actually a trap since yugi knew that Joey would use it on their duel and that would buff his dark magician. So Yugi needed to cheat to beat him
-You mentioned how Joey lost his fight against Marik but would of won if it wasnt for anime bs. You also mention that this would scale him to the same lvl as Yugi. I fully disagree, at this point Joey was well passed Yugi. His deck is significantly weaker and has no god cards and he has no millennium items to aid him. He is not an underdog, that's an insult. A better analogy would be if two master samurai fought each other to the death, only one is wearing a full suit of armour and a real sword while the other is wearing normal clothes and a wooden blade.
-Yugi's millennium puzzle gives him the power to literally draw the exact card he needs when he needs it. He has plot armour built in to his character (look it up its actually an ability of the millennium puzzle)
-Joey was able to take a standard deck anyone could have and pilot it against pro players, people with unlimited money, gods and players who had plot armour and he stood shoulder to shoulder with them. Every strong card he has, he has won. Everyone else either inherited their decks or had daddy's money to buy it. There is no question, he is the best duelist.

I'm so happy you took the time to make this video about Joey. So many people outright call him a trash duelist because some of his more important duels ended in losses, but they forget that he was usually at a disadvantage compared to Yugi and Kaiba in terms of cards, magical items, and money. Yugi and Kaiba are certainly great duelists in their own right, but simply put...Joey made it to the Duelist Kingdom finals while still a beginner to some degree. That alone shows he's a really quick learner, and once he understands the game he really starts to shine as a duelist. On top of being a fantastic duelist though, throughout the series (anime specifically) Joey shows how strong he is not only as a duelist but as a person. He always strives to keep his word to the people he cares about and that's extremely admirable, especially considering the danger this mindset often puts him in. Even though season 4 is an anime only plot...he really shined a lot in that season too. He was one of the few people that managed to remain level-headed through most of it and essentially became the leader of the team while Yami was depressed about losing Yugi. I'm happy to see some love for Joey. He's one of my personal favorite characters and I'm sure he'd be the favorite of many more if they were willing to look at his character more deeply. Anyway, thank you again for making this video. I really loved watching it. God bless you!!!

It was to fulfill the promise that Yuugi and Jounouchi made, the entire motivation for Jounouchi and him becoming a True Duelist. 4kids cut out his growth and the promise so it’s not well known all the motivations and symbolism, but I think the end result was just that Jounouchi had become a True duelist who is good enough to stand on his own feet against the other 2 True Duelists. Yuugi was going to give his red eyes back no matter what, even if Jounouchi lost, so Jounouchi having Red Eyes after that isn’t an indicator that he won.

I always thought Joey was a great guy. I agree that he is a highly skilled and capable duelist. I often find parallels. I started off with two decks starters Pegasus and Joey. I pressed for a mix of the decks and I admit that I saw Joey's cards as more useful than half the ones in Pegasus's and I won my first duels with that. I haven't played Yugioh in a long time since 5ds left us with many confusing mechanics but I would love him to come back as a main character of a whole new arc. Joey: the true king of games.

*fangirl squeal * Thank you so, so, so very much for this. For years I have been trying to convince my friends that Jou is actually a far better duelist than most others for the exact same reasons.
Jou has also one of the most complex and strategicaly challenging decks; at first glance it looks like a gambling deck, but it really is a reflection of every single duel and opponent he fought. M, favourite scene is in the pre-quarter finals, where Jounouchi outsmarts all his opponents, making sure he'll be the one facing Malik. That is one of the most brilliant moves in the entire series.
Battle City is the arc where Jounouchi develops the most, both as duelist and charachter. Sadly, the later series kept pushing the dumb blond aspect to the front and did not only the charachter, but also the series a major disfavour.
There is also one more fact people tend to brush off: Jou's lack of family support. Yes, Shizuka calls in and is around throughout the Battle City/Noah Arc, but unlike Yuugi, Honda, Anzu and Kaiba, who come home to someone who gives them a hug and cheers them up, Jou often gets welcomed by empty beer cans and shouts. In certain ways, Jou is probably even more of an orphan than Seto and Mokuba.

    • @internationalcenterdeidiom399
      @internationalcenterdeidiom399 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe it won't really be a mater of Jo being better than them, but it's his efforts to constantly surpass and try again against foes who surely got cards that can level whole mountains. Never once did he give in when facing those powerful guys while keeping close even with a weaker deck.

    • @internationalcenterdeidiom399
      @internationalcenterdeidiom399 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Going to the finals already cements all of the potential that lies within him and he got past a bunch of rigged fights, cheaters, magic people. Just by simply taking into account the match against Dark Marik where he dueled without his main ace (Red Eyes Dragon) and mustered the strength to withstand the opponent, reminding that Marik was abusing Ra and using Marik but Joey made use of the right cards at the proper time to completely clear Marik. Had our boy gotten atleast a single minute, he would've taken down the bad guy.

Joey's a perfectly fine duellist, but he has a gigantic special advantage, which is his friendship with Yugi. If Yugi hadn't been so good-natured as to see the guy who was just bullying him as his friend, and at the same time so courageous as to take a beating for him, then Joey's better nature might well never have emerged. He'd probably have died at the hands of the Hirutani gang before ever even getting the chance to duel (which is a save we can credit to the Pharaoh, so you could argue the Millennium Puzzle has saved Joey's life now) and he doesn't truly start at the bottom when he becomes a duellist because Yugi gives him the star chip that lets him compete in Duellist Kingdom - he doesn't have to earn the recognition by playing in lesser tournaments that a truly ordinary player would. He benefits from mentoring by both Yugi and the Pharaoh.
Now, it's true that Joey has some great duels and learns to become a very strong duellist on his own. I don't think he's "just lucky" or anything of the sort - Shadow Games bring out the true nature of the player, so a consistent luck is sort of a metaphysical translation of a duellist who is plucky and adventurous, and that's Joey. He totally gets credit for that. However, he's still got serious flaws at this stage compared to the likes of Kaiba and Yugi - Kaiba utterly humiliates him, and there's not even a question in the manga that once it's gotten down to Pegasus, Joey and Yugi that Yugi will be the one to go on and face Pegasus and Joey will be the one to forfeit.
I also think Joey's feats are fairly unimpressive. It's true that he would have beaten Marik if not for his shadowy bullshit, but Marik isn't strong. He loses (or avoids losing via shadowy bullshit) multiple times, that's part of the function of the Millennium Rod, to let Marik the pretender lose over and over again without actually being defeated himself. It's the evil that makes Marik dangerous, not his skill - as befits as true usurper. Joey narrowly gets what should have been a win against Marik, yeah... but the ancient Egyptian bullshit that stops Mai's win prevents her from absolutely annihilating Marik with contemptuous ease. If Joey had played Mai's game and Mai had faced Marik in Joey's place, knowing the chant to summon Ra as a consequence, then they'd have been scraping Marik off the bottom of the duelling arena before the end of turn 9 (shadowy bullshit or not), half the time it took Joey to "beat" him - now that's luck on Marik's part!
Then we've got the unseen duel between Yugi and Joey at the end of Battle City - I agree Joey won and that's certainly impressive, but not as impressive as it would normally be, because the stakes were Red Eyes Black Dragon, duels are connected to the fate of the participants, and Red Eyes is bonded with Joey just like Blue Eyes is bonded with Kaiba. It's his card, the game would want to return it to him. Now, if Yugi had been opposed to that fate? He could probably have changed it, he has the willpower to do that...but he didn't have to. He knew that he could duel his hardest, submit to the will of fate rather than trying to change it, and the "right outcome" of Joey's victory would proceed. If anything, this is another example of Yugi's friendship benefiting Joey, because there are other duellists (Seto Kaiba, for example) who can also change fate through willpower, and Joey didn't have to go up against that. If he had... now that would be interesting. He might even have won, I don't want to diminish Joey at this point in his career at all. I agree with you that the anime did him a disservice at this stage because Kaiba had learned some respect for Joey and their filler battle didn't reflect Joey's progress very well. Still, it didn't happen in the manga, so we'll never know.
Sadly, that's pretty much it for Joey. He's definitely a strong character, because he has flaws and somewhat more relatable circumstances and problems than someone like Kaiba, as well as likable qualities and an entertaining spectrum of personality traits, but is he a stronger games player than Yugi or Kaiba? I just don't see the evidence for that. I don't think he's even as strong as Mai or Pegasus. (you want to talk about characters being treated as weaker than they are - just look at what they did to poor Mai in the anime!) However, even if he's, say, the 5th strongest duellist in the series, that still makes him a mighty opponent and person of legendary status in the lore. He's indisputably stronger than Bandit Keith, which places him above the level of a major national champion, and that was when he was still developing his skills. I could definitely see him winning a world tournament at some point in his career after the story ended.
Thanks for the video, it was really interesting to watch and very well put together! I hope you don't mind me being late and verbose :D

My favorite duelist ever. I think what makes him the best is the fact that he holds his own against duelists with OP cards and he plays for passion (playing the game for the game's sake). Not to mention his performance against Marik. Not an experienced duelist like Mai, not another evil force (Yami Bakura), not some egotistic rich boy like Kaiba, not even the Pharaoh himself could make Marik worry. Yet an average guy, with an average deck, a determination bigger than the empire state building, and a "give 'em hell" attitude made one of THE most dangerous villains shit his pants (that speaks VOLUMES)

Yugi and Jonouchi (Joey) names form “Yujo” (friendship) in Japanese. The show are centered around the two characters, and Joey is a clear example of how their bond made him a better person. Previously was a bully and has an abusive, gambling-addicted father, Joey grew to know to pick the better choice (he talked Mai Valentine out of it in the latter arc) and always fought for his sister and friends. In battle city, he showed an unrivaled level of courage and determination. He started from a noob deck but grinded so hard in every match for his sister. He bears the attack of a God (which deems to be impossible and almost beat the sh** outta Marik if it is not for some anime bs, like bro wth do they allow this type of physical abuse in a fk children card game?). His games are exciting to watch as though one might say he relies heavily on luck, I disagree since he always has been put in tough games where strategically speaking there is hardly any chance to comeback. Many of you have pointed out Joey doesn’t have as many advantages as other main characters have, but he is a true “From Zero to Hero” type of development. With such a great pace of development, he could surpass any duelist and if there is to be any future match of him in the anime, I’m sure he will be a strong, prominent contender for the top place.

  • @dovesr0478
    @dovesr0478 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Based on his commentary while spectating duels, I think Kaiba is the best. He has several times recognized the play that the person dueling needs to make before the they themself are aware of it. This is in contrast to most other characters who usually assume the worst every time the situation gets dire. It's clear Kaiba has a superior understanding of strategy in the game and doesn't jump to conclusions just because things get tough. He can successfully deduce the only winning strategy in those situations, proven by the protagonist carrying out said strategy. I also think he is the best deckbuilder. Sure he has infinite money, but money can't buy skill. He recognized all of the best cards in duel monsters and assembled a successful deck with them.
If we want to get meta about it, then a strong case can be made for Joey being the best. All of the duels in the anime are highly scripted and basically every character has the same ability to draw what they need just like Yugi. If we assume that all characters have "perfect" luck and that this perfect luck helps them execute the main strategy of their deck, then the fact that Joey got so far with such a weak deck means he must be, on some level, outplaying the other characters. It's hard to say that when I just said the duels are highly scripted, but with luck out of the equation what else could explain his victories? I'd argue almost every character in the battle city arc has a stronger deck than Joey, except maybe Mako, but he still made it to the top 4. If we count his game against Marik as a win, he has the skill to make the finals.

I will be using the Japanese names for this.
If I could have redone the battle city finals arc, I would get rid of the yami marik, ra's ancient text and the fake ra card subplot first of all, and it would go something like this.
After Jonouchi proclaims that Rishid isn't Marik, Rishid would ve desperate not to reveal his master and declares the loser to be struck by lightning, prompting marik to make the duel a shadow duel. Jonouchi narrowly wins the duel, Rishid gets struck and enters a coma, and Marik in grief declares revenge against Yugi and his friends by dooming them all to a fate worse than Rishid, Marik functions with much less insanity and sadism than usual but still beats and torments Mai, whom never would have taken and tried to summon ra in this version, and beats and banishes Bakura, but Jonouchi would be in audience for the latter duel.
They compete in the semi finals and Jonouchi would beat Marik, immediatly pass out from the horiible pain and is declared the winner in death by Kaiba.
Marik would be forced to relinquish Ra to what is basically a corpse but he is also fearful for a different reason.
After clearing the field with Jinzo, Marik had changed what the punishment tge loser would suffer but didnt decide on it yet, If Jonouchi won then Jonouchi would be able to decide what his fate would be and that curse hangs over him until Jonouchi decides one for him.
The duel between Yugi and Kaiba is the same but with some new rules. If Jonouchi is not awake before the end of the duel, then he is disqualified from the tournament, and since Kaiba is convinced that Jonouchi is very dead, then if he doesn't wake up then Ra will be up for grabs between the two of them, effectively winning all three god cards at once, and since Kaiba is convinced Jonouchi is dead then he treats the semi-finals as the finals.
Jounochi arrives before the duel ends and Kaiba is livid that his tournament finals is between Yugi, someone who isn't himself, and is a worthless Scrub. The two duel using all 3 gods, but it ends in a perfect tie, enraging Kaiba even further that the pinnacle of duel king that only one can hold is now shared between 2 duelists, Atem still maintains a no lose record until his duel with Yugi, and the two of them trade Ra and Red-Eyes respectively.
Atem leaves for the afterlife and Jonouchi holds the title of sole duel king, forcing Kaiba to swallow his pride to duel Jonouchi, finally acknowlegding him as a true duelist worthy of his attention.
    What do you guys think?

Yugioh needs a what if series showing these kind of stories. This was well done good job. One thing id add with Jonouchis and Setos duel would be using fiber jar and Jinzo to counter the crush card virus.

Also another thing you had wrong. It is made very clear in the series both in the start and especially with the ceremonial duel and DSOD, that Yugi is actually very talented at gaming. That he is the king of games. His only problem pre ceremonial duel is that he didn't have the courage to face tough opponents in big battles. This is what Atem gives him

Dark Side of Dimensions is canon to the Manga. And we see Joey showing off his Red Eyes in the movie. It confirms that he did win it back from Yugi

  • @Bunbaroness

about the part where you say "years, months, however long it takes this series to go" In the manga, I believe one of the earlier chapters prior to the Bakura RPG arc shows the characters on summer vacation. Duelist Kingdom takes 3 days I think, Battle City takes 2 days. Memory World arc is less clear but i think it takes place in the span of like an afternoon, then the time it takes to do a plane ride to egypt then a boat ride to the final duel area. Of course the anime adds lots of filler so i guess that version takes longer, and we also don't know exactly how much time passes between each story arc (but i would assume once he gets the god cards Yugi would want to present them to the tablet and get Atem's memories back fairly soon). Then Dark Side of Dimensions takes place 6 months after the end of the manga and shows Yugi and friends graduating high school.

I'd still say Yugi is the best
    Not Atem, but Yugi
Like Joey did to Marik's shadow powers, Yugi was able to overcome Atem's ability to draw whatever cards he needs, literally surpassing the power of the pharaoh himself.
Unlike Marik, however, Atem was going all out. The series made it pretty clear throughout the duel that Marik wasn't trying to secure a clean win but was rather trying to torture Joey as much as possible. Had Marik been trying the whole time he probably would've won the duel a lot earlier and Joey wouldn't have really been able to do anything regardless of which version the duel you use. In addition, Yugi was able to come up with a combo to destroy all 3 Egyptian god cards in one turn and execute it successfully, then go on to outsmart Atem and win the duel by negating monster reborn. As good as Joey is, I just can't see him doing the same thing. Yugi is also basically a normal person when he doesn't have Atem or the puzzle. Yes, he's the vessel of Atem's soul, but Yugi doesn't have some sort of enhanced dueling power just because he's Atem's vessel, he just learned from his grandfather and from watching and fighting with Atem the same way Joey did, and improved as the series went on.
If Yugi without Atem or the puzzle and Joey at the end of the series both went head to head in a duel, Yugi would likely win, especially based off of dark side of dimensions, which is a continuation of the manga, where Yugi outsmarts Kaiba and would've beaten Yami Aigami if he didn't pass out (assuming Mahad was actually his top deck and not just the work of Atem)
I love Joey, and I definitely think that he'd beat Kaiba if it wasn't for the money gap, but I can't see him beating end of series Yugi.

I'll go even a step further. I think Joey should've been the main character, primarily because Yugi kind of starts off as the best and maintains it and just waits to duel whoever he needs to in order to win and proceed with his own goals, which admittedly are just about him. Yugi and Kaiba also have hardly anything in common in personality or upbringing, while Joey and Kaiba have somewhat similar personalities, identical backstories, but conflicting world views and also conflicting dragons. Yugi goes to save his grandpa, but Joey also forms a grudge against Kaiba as Grandpa is who taught Joey how to be as good as he is, so there's totally a level of avenging his teacher.

While I agree that Joey is the character with the most progression, a couple key points come to mind that weren't brought up:
-His luck stat is off the charts, and a good 90% of the time he gets what he needs off random rolls. Honestly, I would put this up there with Yugi's power to draw just the right card. To make it fully equal, add in the fact that Joey's an expert at bluffing, like against Johnson with the Big Five. And calling out bluffs, like against Odion.
-This is a minor point, but his Dice cards (Graceful and Skull) have incredibly more power than in the TCG, so anyone that brings up that his deck's full of worthless Normal monsters (like Swordsman of Lanstar) is ignoring that fact. Dzeeff has a good video on that.
-Main point now. Each of the main three had different types of opponents:
--Kaiba's opponents were mainly lockdown/control decks (Ishizu stopped Obelisk, the Jinzo guy was Jinzo, Pegasus took his cards, etc)
--Yugi's opponents had the largest cast of opponents (makes sense as he's the main character), but I'd say the general theme was having to cut down a singular overpowered boss monster that was stronger than his cards in 75% of cases, usually taking 2-3 turns to get rid of it.
--Joey's opponents had the most dynamic shift in theme. In DK and BC, most of Joey's opponents cheated. Come to think of it, Joey has beaten more cheaters than the other two combined. But in the BC Finals and beyond, Joey's only faced serious opponents. He's also faced, both before and after the finals, the largest variation of opponents per duel. This gives him, and the viewers, the most experience with different types of decks.
--As an example, in BC, Joey faced off against: Jinzo control/Reflect > Great Moth Boss > Sea Rush just to get into the finals. Not counting his mind-controlled duel against Yugi. Meanwhile, Yugi's duels in BC: Bandit Keith's Zoa Boss > Arkana's Dark Magician Boss (though it didn't follow the exact formula) > Slifer Boss w/ a side of Slime > Lumis n Umbra Masked Fiend Boss > Joey Wheeler (only non-boss so far), all before the finals. So twice as many enemies, only two of the five varied.
I hope I've made my point.

It should be also stated that Joey has arguably the most potential out of all the main characters in the series.
Yugi? Aided by Atem and boosted by the millennium puzzle to obtain the card he needs in a time of need
Seto? Has Obelisk the Tormentor, 3 blue eyes, and is the recincarnation of the cousin of Atem giving him his own amps when near the presence of millenium items.
Marik? Has arguably the strongest god card and has trained his whole life to use the full power of the millenium rod and the power of the shadow games
Joey is a normal ass dude. A normal ass dude goes from a noob to being in not one but two world champions and getting into their semi finals. Joey also is one of the few characters in the series to defeat a God card, which are far more powerful in the anime and manga than they are in real life.

The thing about joey being 'Lucky' is that you only see him play Time Wizard when he's a play away from losing anyways. For someone so dumb, he understands exactly when to play Time Wizard. I also heavily agree with the 'stand-in' thing for multiple reasons, what you laid out is one, but I also think logic wise it makes sense. He always made the most sensible, observant plays with Graverobber, which allowed him to scale with his opponents as they play an extremely powerful card early on then leave themselves exposed for the rest of the duel for Joey to capitalize

12:09 I agree with the whole video, but this is the case killer. At the end of the show they say the Pharaoh never lost straight up duels. Which is canon, which would mean Joey didn’t beat him. It was likely close enough to where yugi told Joey “take this card bruh, geez” and Joey took it reluctantly but happily because they’re friends

Joey's the best no argument here.
For the end of battle city I see it going one of two ways.
1: Yu-Gi battles without Atem's help. While still great, Yu-Gi is not the best yet ready to beat Atem and Joey is able to beat Yugi.
2: Yu-Gi and Atem battle together like normal, buy without God cards as Joey already proved himself against a God and they can still be dangerous even without a shadow game. Joey is able to fight to a draw or bring the duo to near defeat. While he didn't outright win, Joey has proved himself in both their eyes and Joey humbly accepts Red-Eyes back as he still has a connection to it like Yugi and Dark Magician.
