I always took Atem's behavior in the first good quarter of the story (especially in the manga) to be the result of total and complete isolation in a Darkness-infested cursed artifact for literally thousands of years, with no one else to interact with and not a single benevolent soul in sight. Anyone would be off their rocket after that. I think it speaks to his greater morality and embedded sense of justice that he even had a shred of humanity left at all by the time Yugi solved the Puzzle; he was never "evil," but had been caged for so long that he simply wasn't sane. The Atem we see calmed down later in the series and at the end of the story is the real Atem, not the deranged half-sane Spirit that came out of the Puzzle when it was solved. He's still an authoritative figure and ruthless when angry, but he's softer and kinder from both the influence of Yugi and getting his sanity/bearings back over time.

Completely agree. This was absolutely my impression too. You articulated it very well. My go to phrase was usually 'stir crazy' since I had a hard time putting it into words, haha.

I liked waking the dragons arc, but when they’re all scrambling around trying to see if there was evil in atem’s heart, im just thinking of him back in season 0 blowing people up and setting them on fire.
I loved the original manga. I didn’t mind the change to duel Monsters but I did always wonder how things would be different if Takahashi kept the story the way it was going to be before the plot change. And also like I said I loved the entire manga beginning to end, but to be honest the story’s ending left me wanting more. Even after Dsod, I still would like more story. But that’s just me
Takahashi said in an interview once that he focused on Duel Monstera because trying to think/find a new game to base chapters/story arcs on was stressing him out because he didn’t want to repeat game concepts so when the editors asked if he wanted to expand Duel Monsters, he agreed since it was something he could work with.

First off, *THANK THE GODS* for a Yugi-tuber who actually discusses the lore.
That said, I definitely prefer the original Yami Yugi / Atem. I loved the stand-alone / anthology style stories. It really kept the series fresh and interesting. I would have liked for it have been executed in a way like they did with Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex; with episodic stories accompanied by an overarching story that would connect at key points.
Also, who is this Takana-san character you mentioned at the end of the video?
I heard that something about Takahashi original setting for Atem is not an Egypt pharaoh or anything close. HE IS ACTUALLY YUGI'S OTHER PERSONALITY. But while the Manga keep going on, he changed this setting to the pharaoh we know right now. And after that, he also mentioned something like, the reason Atem in first few volumes feel so evil because at that time his soul still fuse with Zork and partly influenced by Zork as well, of course, not as bad as Yami Bakura.
That personality is just mentioned by the creator's opinion.
So Yugi was supposed to be straight up crazy before Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist? Yeesh...
But how does that explain the two souls they share? Or yugis magic powers? Yugi is a human and cant do magic that we've seen (or just hasnt learned how to invoke it) humans arent usually a magic using race unless you are a spellcaster or it's in your genes. Or the black outs? He would remember if they were truly the same.

@@muzhili9512 In the first few chapters, when the antagonists cheated, Yami inflicted a penalty on them, usually in the form of hallucinations of monsters, da or body horror that made them go insane
I think that he's all effed up because of all that quality time with Zorc in the Puzzle.
PhulaTrox Zorc could have been in any part of the puzzle cause remember when Shadi went into the puzzle it was all a big maze. Atem and Zorc could have been in separate parts of the puzzle for all those years
The zorc portion of yami yugi was more prominent at the start but he had the atem portion as well which didn't make Yami yugi so damn evil like dark bakura. It's also said the puzzle is a balance of good and evil which is Yami yugi

Zork came later in the series. Actually, he was bakuras boss monster in the dnd type board game they played at the transition to duelist kingdom
This is also known as Season 0. if you havent seen it you should look it up! its based on this and they change it alot from Season 0 to the dual monsters that we know today
I always headcanoned that the reason Atem was kinda evil in those first few chapters was because the millennium items themselves were evil. They were created by slaughtering a whole village after all. Sure you can do good things with the millennium items but it's still evil magic.
personally, I liked the Monster world arc, but a big part of that is because Yami Bakura is my favorite YGO villain, and I think that it's necessary to create the meaningful echo with the Memory World arc at the end.
They killed pegassus in the manga, they kept him alive in the anime ,which I like lol.

Amazing video Aigami! And oh my, this is a topic that is rarely discussed in the YGO communities. And you pulled it off absolutely marvelously!
On the topic of the video, I think that if the concept of YGO as it was originally planned had never changed, I do not think that the manga would had survived of long. The idea is still nobel, and one that you rarely see even today, but it got boring very fast. Yet, I do see one way that the series could had survived for quite some time with it's original plotline. This way is simply for the OG manga to take the same rout as the original Toei anime (season 0). What I'm talking about is simply having a recurring villainous character, with whom Atem would had played roughly the same shadow game, and there would be several long arcs/ consecutive volumes dedicated to the fight against that specific character. Think about it like the Death T arc or the Monster World board game arc, but much longer and far more in depth. And in order of keeping the OG idea still going, Atem and his friends could had dealt with each minion of the big baddy in a different, individual way. Pretty much how it happened with the Kaiba and his henchmen subplot in season 0. If made just right, this would had probably caught the attention of the readers, and maybe helped the manga catching sales and popularity once again. It's very hard to decide if it would had helped the OG YGO keep existing for as long as DM did (or if it did, exist as long as the entire franchise nowadays), but I do think that it might had existe for 1-2 years longer that it existed in reality.
It is very hard to tell how would had the characters changed if the manga kept it's original concept. And one of the major for it it is because the ENTIRE STORY would had been vastly different from what it is now. The characters would had gone to vastly different adventures, they had fought against much different bad guys (and even if those baddies were the same characters as in DM, aka Pegasus, Marik, Bakura, Zigfrid etc.) So, the way they would had eventually developed would be much different from what we are familiar today. To over simplify it but still giving you a good example for that, think about Yugi and co. as the legendary characters in Arc V. Even tho visually and in rough bio there were the same, all of them ended up being conceptually very different characters from their original self.
What I think that would had happened in oversimplified generalization, is what I would call the 5Ds Crow Hogan affect- several characters would had been switched from being evil to being always good and vise versa, and their stories would had been altered accordingly. Maybe some characters would not had been existing at all, and some other completely new would had taken their place. And this would had affected EACH AND EVERY character from the OG and DM YGO, with no exclusions. So, it almost impossible to say how this would had affected some very specific characters, let alone the main protagonist.
But again, in very rough generalization, basing of the few clues that we got in the 7 original volumes, I think that "OG" YGO had looked kinda like this- Atem would had stayed the evil, rough and creepy Batman wannabe as we know him now in early YGO. Yet with more he and Yugi learned about each other, and the more they became open for each other, they would had befriended each other and made a great duo (well, just like in DM). Yet, Atem would had been far more brutal from what we know him now, and Yugi would had needed to do far harder job to calm him down and softener his blood-hungry nature. Think of it as Bruce Banner/Hulk situation, just in YGO, and the two counterparts actually can talk with each other. Atem personalty would had softener with the progression of the story, of course, and become much less brutal, but he would had got a "full redemption" closer to the 3/4 mark of the story, and then he would had been kinda like Atem in the Duelist Kingdom arc (anime version). Joey would had stayed basically the same as he was in the original manga, but with far more brutal and trouble-looking personality. He would had been more of a loner type and would had been picking fights far more often that he does in the DM manga, and ultimately had more struggles that he already have. Also, Joey's role would had been expanded far more than it was in DM. I have no opinion about Tea and Tristan tho.
Seto Kaiba may had been changed from the rival character of Yugi to one of his main villains. The arch villain would had stayed Yami Bakura & Zorc, but Kaiba (and to some degree Mokuba too) would had grown up to be Yugi's enemy no.1. Of course, the Kaiba brothers would had been far far far more evil than they had been in season 0. Probably as evil as Yami Marik, if I can say.
Any other character, again, it would had depended on how the story went. If they would had ended up existing in the very first place, of course.
I just finished reading all the yugioh volumes and it was very satisfying

I don't know which ones were boring with the random games but I absolutely loved the original Yugioh before the 2000 reboot and I wish there was never a plot change.
I actually prefer Season 0 Yami Yugi/Atem over the Atem from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters.

I do not know if i should be glad for the letters that asked about the card games or not. I mean i think if not for the card games, likely the franchise would not be as big as it gets today. But i did wondered how it would be if the others games from this manga also gets attention for example more from the dungeon dice game too? I think it would be so cool if both of those games are as popular as one another etc. But i guess alot of people just like the card game side and the dice game is not feasible in real life huh x'D
I thank you for saying that Pharaoh Atem has pure heart I always knew he was from the start that's I always believed in him,but one more thing I disagree when you said that Atem is arrogant he is not like that yeah he can caught up in the heat the duels but that doesn't prove the he is like his cousin Seto,Kaiba more of the arrogant duelist though and good would it have been if Yami did wait for the timer to run he would not have defeated Pegaues either way no thanks to Pegaues setiting the duel with the timer it makes no sense for you to claim that Atem is arrogant that don't make him arrogant

The Yu-Gi-Oh! card game wouldn't be around today if it didn't get changed to a card game.
To add more onto Yu-Gi-Oh! Itself most likely wouldn't have occurred as well.
.Aigami, if you want a good suggestion of one great character to make a video like this one about, that character is Tetsu Ushio And the big reason why is because he ended up reappearing in the 5Ds anime, and being somewhat of a key character there too. And yes, I do talking about officer Trudge, and yes, this is officially confirmed by Takahashi nonetheless. So, considering this rather interesting turn of events, it would had been only interesting to know how he would had turned out if YGO left it's original concept.
If Ushio is too much of a headache, another possible suggestion is Miho, Joey's love interest/Tristan's girlfriend. And for why her in specific is because of her expanded role in the Toei YGO anime. After all, she was just no more than a completely random name drop in the manga, yet the anime made her to be basically a main character & a member of Yugi's gang.
Oh, and Yugi's mom. I believe that I don't even need to explain why *cough* DM anime*cough* 4Kids censorship*.
Regarding Ushio being in the 5ds, I'm most likely certain Kaz didn't say it was him. rather it was from the Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Animation Book. Personally even though, it was stated officially I still don't believe it's the true trudge from the yugioh manga, or anime. Miho was put in as a main character in the toei series because it's toei lol. They gave Kaiba green hair. Regarding Yugi's mother she isn't physically removed from episode 41. She's still there it's just that she's not stated to be Yugi's mother.

I agree with you about early Yami Yugi's morality being very on par with what was considered "righteous" and "moral" back in the day. We moderns may not like it, but a very important part of early concepts of justice was a just and fitting punishment (which ironically would probably be lethal and relatively quick if the person was truly merciful because other possible punishments were drawn-out and torturous). To be clear, I don't agree with this aspect of Atem's ethics, but I'm empathetic and self-aware enough (I hope) to realise the place he's coming from and recognize that they have their own internal self-consistency even from the beginning of his introduction as a character.
Do we really think that the "justice" of even the most benevolent people in Ancient Egypt involved the same amount of compassion that we take for granted these days? This really is an instance of an extreme contrast in cultures and how "good" and "justice" are viewed (and it probably helps that I've read a lot more about Ancient Egyptian society than most): what would be viewed as just and necessary back then would be seen as cruel and sadistic by our standards by virtue of the fact that Atem's punishments for the worst of the worst are either lethal or being poetically tailored to fit the crime or both. (As an aside: especially for a shōnen manga/animè, I am continually surprised and appreciative about how accurate Yu-Gi-Oh! is about its cultural source material; the minute I underestimate Kazuki Takahashi, he works in something to show that he's done his research!)
In the eyes of the people of Ancient Egypt, even Season 0 Atem would have been considered a saint compared to the morality of other pharaohs because he would only dish out these sadistic-by-modern-standards punishments to the absolute worst of humanity rather than everyone who broke the law; therefore the people would be less hyper-focused about the people he did decide to punish in Shadow Games and such and would take far more notice of the likely many, many people he would either spare or show leniency towards for actions such as stealing food for their families, causing accidental harm, doing something morally wrong but being authentically repentant, etc..
I do agree with commenters saying Atem was also stir-crazy after all that time in the Millennium Puzzle, but regardless all his actions make sense when viewed in the context of him acting upon his ingrained instincts of how to dispense justice from back when he was the pharaoh. Which is exactly why his relationship with Yugi is so important: It taught him to see things from a perspective he would never have considered or even been able to consider if he had remained in his own time and never met Yugi, allowing him (and Yugi) to grow.
I also like contrasting Atem with Shadi: Atem is a very old spirit, but he is willing to learn and adapt his ideas when faced with new perspectives, whereas Shadi is comparatively far younger and yet is held back by his rigid adherence to the Ancient Egyptian view of moral behavior. (Incidentally, the failure of Diva in my opinion was in part the failure of Shadi as a teacher: Shadi may have managed to stay in the good graces of the Egyptian gods, but if he had been less willing to inflict harm upon others regardless of whether they "deserved" it, or at least modeled as much open-mindedness and growth as Atem did, then Diva would not have been as tempted to judge and destroy when given the absolute power of the Plana. Plus, Diva maintains Shadi's characteristic stubbornness when faced with opposing opinions.)

When we see Atem in season 5 we can see that he is more like Yugi than in the seasons 0-4, although it is earlier on his timeline. I know you think that the creator changed his plans, but I think the 3000 years in the millenium puzzle had changed Atem a lot. He wasn't just sleeping for 3000 years. He instead was locked in together with Zork! Atem was tortured by Zork with no hope to escape or even die. Atem sacrificed his soul for excepting eternity. He was in incredible pain and fear for so long. Without any friend or comfort. 3000 years are a long time for someone to forget compassion for his enemies. On my opinion, Atem's character in season 1-4 wasn't his original character but the consequence of all his suffering.

Actually heared he was forced to keep manga in lighter terms later on. Who did that? Kid's parents! They said that manga is way too violent for kids in the age gap for who it was destined to. And it weren't only one or two nagging voices but litterally everyone had comlaints! Calls to manga studio, letters ect so it was either ending cooperation or changing to lighter style. Same with "Acient Egypt/memories" saga. Takahashi wanted priest Seto to be main villian so something drastic had to happen for him to stop being so loyal to Atem...buut at that time Takahasi was seiously ill to the point of being in the hospital so unable to work...sooo after he was let go/cured he had so damn verry little time he had to make that arc waaay shorter.

Hiro Mamoru tell that to the people he drove insane, or indirectly killed because of the penalty back in the earlier chapters before card games were the focus. Yes they may have deserved it, but two wrongs don't make a right.

I feel like there can be a dsod 2 because I thought that we never ever saw atems mother throughout the series what if atem father never mentioned that she was possessed by a god like shadow creature something close to Anubis and zorc plus also from the ending of dsod maybe kiba wins but atem hands over the pharaoh title over to priests seto to watch over Egypt as he did and atems mom resurrect from the underworld leaving adult yugi and the others in trouble. This time they can even bring out the underworld god cards that would cool

i more think that there is no Atem but what the puzzle took yuugi's soul and split it in half and the on got all the power of a yami no game and the othere was just the normal yuugi and that why in season 0 yuugi lose his memories after every yami no game because it is his other self idk if yami yuugi says it in the manga but he does it in the series at one point were he is against bakura and the good yuugi is on the game field and the other yuugi is playing the game yami yuugi tells that if yuugi dies he will die too and thats why i think yami yuugi is just other hakf of yuugi
