I have the UB420 and a PS5. I normally don't rely on my gaming consoles for watching movies, just strictly gaming. I like a lot of the fine adjustments that having a standalone player gives you over the consoles simply because the consoles are not purpose built for movies so the manufacturers are not just going to add a bunch extra stuff for you to have that premium experience for movies. But that's just me tho!!!

It's a licensing issue. Dolby charges $3 per device sold iirc. Now, most companies sell several hundred thousand TVs, maybe a few million or so for any given specific popular model, that alone is around $3M, Sony probably pays several millions to license it for its TVs alone. But the PS5? It's expected to sell over a 100M consoles by the end of it's lifetime, probably far more. Sony already is reportedly selling each console at a loss, do you think they'd pay $300M+ for an HDR license when there's already a free and open source alternative? Lol

I was using the one X as a 4K player and it was ok. I bought the UB820 as I didn’t really like the player UI on my Xbox. It is better with the Media remote as waking the controller is annoying just to pause etc. Myself and my Wife much prefer putting on a disc in the 820. It also has Dolby vision which looks great on our LGC8 oled. One thing on both these though is if you use an AV amp and pass everything through that then there are a few problems. If you use game mode on your TV for Xbox then put in a blu ray then you have to manually switch back to a different picture setting on the TV or you get milky blacks etc. It’s fine with a 4K disc as they auto switch to an HDR mode on TV but blu rays do not. You then manually switch back to game mode for Xbox. This is also the same with the stand alone player as the amp hdmi output goes into a single hdmi (arc) on the TV. It’s an easy process on the TV but I wish it would all detect what was happening better.
I hope the newer TVs like the CX with ALL mode will do the trick which I will upgrade in the future. The 820 is fast. I also get better atmos sound through it than Xbox. I now have series X which I haven’t tried yet as the panny is a lot better as an experience.

I also saw a color shift during your detail still (when Alita was on the floor). Also, unless there has been an update in not aware of, the PS5 doesn't have Atmos support. They are (or were) pushing their 360° audio format, so it obviously technically supports audio objects (supposedly more than Atmos, not that it matters). I've had better overall visual and audio performance (especially audio, wow what a difference sometimes) for *most* films on the Series X, and occasionally even the black levels are superior. Another thing I noticed is the PS5 doesn't handle scenes with heavy, complex motion as well as the Series X. A good example is The Fellowship of the Ring's opening scene. Right after, at the transition to The Shire, I felt that the PS5 was significantly more muted irrespective of movement. Sound overall took a significant hit too. I too took frames and video from this film to compare, sent to friends, and even sent to someone I know who worked on the mastering of the Hobbit and LOTR UHD sets. Their response: I know. However, one frustrating thing about the Series X has been that it'll drop occasional frames, which is unacceptable and jarring. I haven't seen this behavior on the PS5. What I have noticed is the PS5's drive is a lot louder and seeks more erratically. The Series X also has a bug with some setups where it won't properly switch to DTS when a movie doesn't support Atmos. It'll give me a can't decode error and it'll force me to manually choose DTS and restart the Blu-Ray. I haven't seen it happen in a few movies so maybe they fixed it (they haven't fixed the 120Hz no signal bug affecting some games though) but it was incredibly annoying. Anyway, if it wasn't clear, I own both consoles along with ~140 UHD BRs and compare performance frequently. Running a calibrated 77" LG CX.

Thank you!👍 But in your valued opinion do you think the extra feature of having dv on the ub 820 is worth getting over the ps5? Is there actually a difference? Recognizing it was a lifetime ago, I spent $1k on my first Blu-ray player, after a year it failed, I spent another extreme amount on similar for it only to fail rather quickly as well. The first time of failure I ignored many who bought the PS3 for less than these dedicated players and used it, but finally decided on the 3rd attempt to try it. Well, it is still running today, and I can say at the time, it was much faster to load, and ran seamlessly where my other players were quite slow. So, I would not be afraid to do this as long as the specs of today's units are comparable.

Agreed! That’s what I’m trying to decide if the difference is something to worry about. I bought this to be my 4kbd player... my Apple TV streams movies in Dolby Vision 4K and supports Dolby Atmos... so, just about any movie I purchase on UHD BD comes with the movie that I can stream. But I know, an actual disk will have a better performance all around. But does the Dolby Vision set things apart!? Ugh, I want Sony to pay the fees to allow both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos without having to finagle anything.

Dolby Vision is completely overrated as the difference just comes down to personal preference in picture quality. It’s not objectively better.

Darn, darn, darn! You're the first video maker I've found who actually bothered to examine the PS5 in Blue-Ray play... and the important question I had was answered by you (so thank you) and the answer isn't good for me... I own multiple 4K TV's but only 1 Blue-Ray player which can provide HDR10, HDR10+, Hybrid Log Gamma AND Dolby Vision and I was praying that the PS5 would play in all High Dynamic Range formats so I could simply move my Sony UBP-X700 4K to my second floor where my other TV is, along with my current PS4 Pro. I've posted on video after video after video after video all by different TH-cam makers asking what you have just answered.
So I thank you and hate that I need to but not just a PS5 Disc (Console), but also yet another Sony UBP-X700 4K Blue-Ray player.
Darn... if Sony had only used perhaps slightly different video chips in addition to the fee Dolby charges and just charged us all $10, $30, $50 more for the console which could then do what the Series X cannot (play Blue-Ray discs which are formatted in Dolby Vision HDR) I would have been extremely happy. But now I have no reason to try so hard to buy a PS5 (at least not until the PS4 Pro is no longer supported which just might be around the time a PS5 Pro unit is released).
    Thanks for making this video!
    Sincerely,
    David

I have both of these machines.. Both are necessary, for a videophile like myself, who wants the best possible movie experience.. the panasonic ub820 dropped to $350, now its up to $400, but at least its not $500 anymore. I started with the Sony x800m2 for $250, but the Panasonic is night and day better for $100 more. I felt this was necessary because sony(ps5, not x800m2) really just spins the disc. Its a vanilla bluray player and doesn't even have allm to autoswitch your settings. I accidentally left my movie setting on once and the input lag was so noticeable, i felt like the game was broken..
Like I asked last time, is the hdr optimizer on during these comparisons? Because that's entirely what makes that player $500. That and Dolby vision playback. The ps5 has neither. The HDR optimizer makes films in hdr10 incredible. Dolby vision does this by itself, obviously, but you are able to tell this player that your tv is 1000 nits or 1500 nits or whatever it may be, so your tv only has to tonemap inside a 1000 nit box instead of a 4,000 nit box. This effectively produces the best hdr10 content on the planet. Its the best processor out there.
Tvs suck at tonemapping and need all the help they can get.

If you’re from North America, your PS5 will only play region 1 DVDs and region A blu-rays (unless you have it shipped from another country/continent). To play Blu-ray on PS5 Slim, you'd better rip and convert Blu-ray to MP4 first with a tool like VLC, DumboFab...
