Maybe something that is good to mention here: The Panasonic UB820 and UB9000 have an auto detection function for HDR10/HDR10+/Dolby Vision, but if a disc contains both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision (Which I, at first, wasn't even aware of that it existed), both players default to HDR10+ and you have to disable HDR10+ detection in the player's menu if you want to watch the content in Dolby Vision. ;)
Oppo 205 also defaults to HDR10+ on the discs with both fwiw. The whole 12bit marketing nonsense of DV is utterly pointless with mostly 8bit frc+ and 10bit panels. Plus it's delivered to consumers in a standard 10bit asset. Unlike theatrical Dolby Cinema 12bit 4k laser projection where it actually matters. Regardless, both DV and HDR10+ look great. I will say though that HDR10+ does have better shadow detail because it has a superior 10 point beizer curve tonemapper versus Dolby's 3 point interpolation. Hence the slight black crush on some DV content. So I personally don't fuss over one or the other. Just whatever the disc or streaming platform sends. How is AI supposed to help with missing 8K-optimized codec-decoding hardware in streaming boxes and TVs? 8K eats up a huge amount of throughput when used with codecs that are better for 4K like HEVC, and VVC, which is a codec that is much more well-suited for 8K, cannot be decoded by most TVs or streaming boxes due to missing decoding hardware. As of this writing, the only TV hardware that decodes VVC is MediaTek’s Pentonic SoCs like the Pentonic 700 (mainstream 4K TV SoC), Pentonic 1000 (high end 4K TV SoC), and Pentonic 2000 (8K TV SoC). The first two are found in newer Hisense and Sony TVs respectively. Samsung’s and LG’s SoCs can’t decode VVC.
It won't matter if it does. No one has an 8K display and content largely still isn't even being shot in 8K today, except with very rare exception. 8K will likely have its day at some point, but for the foreseeable future, unless something drastic changes (and there is no indication yet today at all that it will) 8K appears to be DOA for the most part, at least with respect to the consumer marketplace.
Having had my fingers burned when Oppo pulled out of the market how long before these new brands from China do the same? I still have my Oppo 105D and yes it is still a great player, but for now the Panasonic UB820 gives me all i need, i would like a UB9000 just for the build quality, but not at 3 times the price.
I own the X700M, the X800M2 and the X1100ES from Sony. With all of them (and I use them all the time with my collection of over 50 4K movies) I have never once had any of them freeze or skip on any disc I have ever put into them. Do note here that it was determined that several disc stamping facilities out of Asia over the past few years were known to be putting incorrectly stamped/pressed defective discs out into the marketplace. Some of the Sony players were freezing at the layer boundary transition on many of those flawed discs. The freezing problem with these players was much more likely due to issues relating to those flawed discs rather than anything with the players themselves. As always though, be sure and keep your players up to date with the latest firmware updates. Sony is one of the very best companies out there when it comes to issuing updates for their players to keep them as up to date, issue-free and current as possible.
@@bradmyers4923 that’s the reason I got the Panasonic DP-UB820 when it was on sale instead. No problems with any disks and it auto detects Dolby Vision automatically
Is the Panasonic DP-UB-150-K a decent pick for $169 USD? It has HDR10+ support and will be paired with a Samsung TV, so I don't really care about Dolby Vision.
I’ve had the Sony x700 since 2019 and it still works fantastic. I love how it upscales my blu rays to Dolby vision, it looks almost 4k quality. I’ve been thinking of upgrading to the ub820 but I figured there’s really no benefit and I’m just wasting money.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Are there any TVs that support Dolby Vision, HDR10+ AND 3D? I have a few 3D Blu-ray movies, that I used to watch in an old LG TV with PS3. But, nowadays, I feel I'm stuck with thoses movies, with no means to watch them. Any suggestions, anyone?
Sony X700 has a bug where it stops playback when hitting the 3rd layer in UHD100 discs. I tried two different X700s, same issue, sadly. However, the X800M2, with the latest firmware, doesn’t have the issue :)
@@Jodez23 Latest firmware has issues with Dolby Vision. The UB820 is a great player but Panasonic’s quality control is a bit spotty. Many have received glitched players new right out of the box. My first 820 bought new was a lemon and had to be replaced. If you’re lucky enough to get one that works, leave it alone and enjoy it.
Got the X700 as my first ever player, don’t really see the difference between the Series X, PS5 or the player, looks all the same to me. Also have no idea what Dolby vision is. And if you were to say it just has better picture, still wouldn’t know what you’re saying.
Sorry mate, The remote for the panasonic dp-ub820gnk is garbage. Small. Cheap. Plastic. Non-intuitive. Slow response. Really poor-- I believe this was worth mentioning. The remote is like a piece of tech from the early 2000's. Rubbish . A real shame to couple it with what is supposed to be a flag-ship player.
They don't support Dolby Vision disc playback so not an issue for Samsung TVs but if you have a flagship LG OLED and you want to watch DV on disc, you'll have to get the Sony X700M at the very least.
In my experience, the XBox series X is very loud when playing 4k discs. I don't know if it's the dvd mechanism itself or the fan, but either way, unless you plan on listening to the movie at very high volume, the loudness of the machine makes watching 4k discs on xbox a no-go for me.
My ps5 is connected to my Samsung s89C that doesn't support Dolby vision anyway. my sony ubp-x700 is connected to my x95K that supports DV. The setups work great.
I have a Sony X800M2 and I honestly have no idea what you mean about having to manually set DV. I enabled it once in the settings and it doesn't seem to stumble or produce bad (non-HDR) results when playing back discs that don't have DV.
Depending on the non-DV content, if you compared them side by side, the colors will be slightly off as the X800M2 is outputing everything as DV which is incorrect - check your TV to see if your TV thinks it's receiving DV
@@BobFrostV I ended up going for the 820 in the end - despite the above comment, the 450 does not support Dolby Vision. Not a single complaint from me so far 👍
@@mrbrit6746 That's fine. The UB450 does support DV though! lol I have one and enjoyed DV on my 100" last night. It even auto switches between HDR10+ and DV. The UB450 isn't the UB420. It used to be available in EU only but just launched for purchase in the US recently. It costs $200 instead of $500 like the 820.
@@BobFrostV Ohhh yeah my bad. The UB450 however has a different upscaler compared to the UB420. DVDs and Blu Rays upscale to 4K much better, hence why it is a highly sought after player

Do you think I would get any improvement on 4k video playback or better visuals going from the reavon to the magnetar? Or do you think I won't notice any difference?
I can't see how you will see any difference, it's sending a digital codec to the display. Only difference should be in upscale ( that panasonic is currently the best ) or in some cases hdr optimiser. ( again panasonic is currently top) some players have better audio , with analogue options.
@@iansteventon4221The HDR optimizer is irrelevant for Panasonic OLED owners with the same chipset in the TV. Believe it or not the best player for HDR impact and the highest quality drive mechanism was the Pioneer LX800. The new Panasonic DMR-ZR1 in Japan is better than the 9000, it may finally dethrone the LX800 in raw PQ. Panasonic finally added 25/50p output matching for BD PAL format content on the ZR1, the lack of which on the 9000 disqualified it as a reference player in my book due to erroneous PAL->NTSC framerate conversion. The 9000 is also a terrible file player unlike the Oppos, Pioneers and Magnetars of the world. The Magnetar has a very cheap drive for the price, but no worse than Raveons. Magnetars are better than Raveon just the Oppo style firmware alone makes it worth having over the Raveon.
LG UBK90 is a good competitor to the Sony X700. Super basic interface but quick load times, auto detect Dolby Vision, 3D support, Dual HDMI out for those with older receiver /processor that don't support Dolby Vision pass thru. Reavon owner here, YES IT DOES DO DOLBY VISION AUTO DETECT! Where did you get the idea it doesn't? The better option is the X110 as it has both DVD-Audio and SACD support the Panansonic 9000 doesn't. I haven't used a Magnetar, but from what I have read and seen it is a better player than the Reavon X200 but the X200 at it's price does offer analog 7.1 out for even older receiver/processors or multi channel SACD.
I have been using the Sony X700 for a while now and aside from supporting 4K HDR and Dolby Vision/Atmos, and DTS:X, it can also play back SACD and DVD-A. I do have a couple of SACDs and a DVD-A discs so it makes me happy that I can play these back without having to buy extra gear specifically for those formats. I may be mistaken but I believe the X700 can also playback 3D movies. I had a look at my X700's settings and found some settings for 3D output. I don't watch 3D movies and my TV does not support 3D so this feature is not important to me at all. The manual switching on and off of Dolby Vision is only a minor inconvenience though. The other downside I can say is that I have experienced some skipping and freezing issues with the X700 while other times, the whole thing just ran smoothly. I am not sure though if it's the device or the disc that's defective.
@FOMO what would you recommend for someone who needs coaxial SPDIF to play CDs in to an external DAC? I’ll be using up the Toslink port coming from the TV coming from the AppleTV [ATV->TV->DAC]. The Pana 820 would be perfect except that it is missing the digital coax. I guessing that makes it a choice between the Pana 9000 vs Magnatar 800? Mahalo!
The Panasonic players also support 4k 'SDR' (I'm not talking about 4k HDR) playback in 10 bit, such as the Kino Lorber 'Dollars trilogy. The other players output 4K SDR in 8 bit...thereby reducing the quality down instead of playing it in true 10 bit. Also, the Panasonic players perform test pattern playback better when using the spears and munsil test discs. There are less jaggies and noise, practically none. In real world content on TV screens when pixel peeping, its probably not noticeable. But, for the perfectionists out there, the Panasonic has the best video processing.
I have a Panosonic ub 820 and I can say for the money, it's the best player currently in production. Picture looks great, easy ui, all the features most people need. In my opionion and from what I read the best 4k player ever made is the out of production OPPO UDP-203. Might invest in one in a while, at least $1k on ebay, so its defiently an investment.
I own a Sony UBP-X1100ES for 4, years. Works very well in every respect. Don't know why Sony removed it from their site long before its availabiity ceased.
Hi! I have the UBP-X700/M, great device,*it does support 3D Bluray playback* (5:55 ), Dolby Vision works great, even if you have to manually turn it on every time you put in a DV 4k disc, sadly it doesn’t change automatically. If you leave DV On the device sends all content, even SDR, in a forced DV which might not be a problem for many, but it does look forced.
You mention 3D support, what TVs support 3d movies these days?? I have wondered if 3d would be done with lcd glasses since the refresh rates are over 120Hz on many screens so you could get 60hz per eye.
U8N has a better image processor that's more refined than '23 QM8 but the X90L $1600 75" is a good price for a great out of the box experience, I'd go with the Sony for overall ownership experience even if the U8N has better image quality in terms of brightness and HDR impact, Sony skin tones look better without calibration
I recently bought the Sony UDP-X700M to pair with my December purchase of an LG C3. LG has properly executed Dolby Vision and a better GUI (WebOS) than Sony or Samsung. I don't know why people were pushing for the Samsung QD-OLED when I've found my LG C3 does just fine in a bright sunlit room and gives a nice bright picture. So, I'm very happy with my buys.
I have the Sony X800 & X800M2, Panasonic UB820, and Sony PlayStation 5. The Sony XM800 and PlayStation have the cleanest picture. The XM800 has a cleaner picture than the M800M2. The Panasonic UB820 has a slightly warmer picture tone than all of the Sonys and the colors are more saturated. The Panasonic UB820 can also provide custom tone mapping to brighten the APL on 4K HDR (non Dolby Vision) discs. The Sony X800 series is made of metal. The Panasonic UB820 is plastic. My go to player is the Sony X800 (original) as it has the cleanest picture. The Sonys, except the PlayStation 5, play SACDs if that is important to you. The PlayStation does not play any kind of music disc. The Panasonic has a feature where you can simulate vacuum tube sound for CDs if that is your thing. Burning question FOMO...why do you have a disc player when you have the Kaleidescape system? For Spears & Munsil and a large disc collection?
Does your Sony's have skipping issues from time to time? I had to ditch my Panasonice UB820 because it had problems on 2 out of every 10 discs. Im considering another panasonic but scared, I may get burned again. Thinking about the Sony, it seems as though you like them. Is switching the dolby atmos a serious annoyance?
@@Slyclientthetechdad No the Sonys don’t skip. The Sonys, except for the PS5, can freeze. I’ve had this happen a couple of times. Disconnecting the Sonys from the WiFi cures this. Since I use them as disc players only and an Apple TV for streaming, not an issue for me. My main TV is an older Sony A9G. I don’t see any benefit of Dolby Vision vs HDR10 on it. To switch to Dolby Vision mode on the 800XM2, you have to go into the menu system. Not a big deal for me.
I'd say I can't believe there are people blind Blu-ray players but based on the fact that Blu-ray players are still absurdly expensive, most people ARENT buying them. It was like this to some extent when VHS first csme out, but eventually the sales volume and competition brought prices down.. Under 500 bucks for a literal disc player, no way in hell. Especially since even with the expensive ones they're still lacking features...
How many tvs support 3d & dolby vision on planet earth? I'd guess 0. I had to return the Sony m800m2, wouldn't play triple layer discs without freezing. My ub820 has been performing perfectly. I'd recommend panasonic ub820 💯 %.

Panasonic DP-UB9000 has multi-region support.
I think you also have to get a special firmware update as it's not OEM multi-region right?
@@stopthefomo By using the original remote and a series of codes with the buttons you can change the region. It's available on Google 😁
A cheap hack. Find used Xbox One X. No DV but has everything else and can be found used for under $100.
Definitely eBay is your friend.
I had a Panasonic UB-9000 - it went out at 4yrs & I switched to the Sony x800M2 - haven’t had any problems
Thanks
Sony X700M does play 3D Blu-ray. Why did you say it doesn't?
Having had my fingers burned when Oppo pulled out of the market
how long before these new brands from China do the same?
I still have my Oppo 105D and yes it is still a great player, but for now
the Panasonic UB820 gives me all i need, i would like a UB9000
just for the build quality, but not at 3 times the price.
I got the Sony UBP X700M and it works great. 🤩👍
No one is going to talk about the Sony players having issues freezing up while playing?
@@michaelbeckerman7532 that’s weird. Most people on TH-cam have issues with them and whenever they use the same disk on a Panasonic it just works
I’ve had an X800M2 and it freezes on brand new 4k discs as well as perfectly cleaned used 4k discs! The thing is driving me nuts!
It doesn’t have the hcx processor which everyone glories Panasonic players. So for few more bucks get ub420.
I have an Oppo UDP-203 and it still works great after 8 years.
they should have kept making it, just on a smaller scale. I'll never forgive them for ending it.
an excellent player to THIS DAY, not much has changed LOL
Never sell it. If the laser goes bad, it's a cheap part made by Sony used in all UHD BD drives regardless the model. It's a $30 part.
Sony X700 has a bug where it stops playback when hitting the 3rd layer in UHD100 discs. I tried two different X700s, same issue, sadly. However, the X800M2, with the latest firmware, doesn’t have the issue :)
thanks for that!
@@stopthefomo my pleasure! FOMO I have the old model Sony X95J. What would you recommend in terms of HDR impact in a moderately bright room? 77 inch.
Use Oppo 203 & Panasonic 820 with my JVC 4K projector.
My advice is to find a Panny UB820 that works flawlessly out the box, don’t update the firmware and leave it disconnected from the internet.
What's wrong with the firmware?
G3 77" paired with DP-UB450GN-K
How does the Xbox and PS5 fair ?
They don't support Dolby Vision disc playback so not an issue for Samsung TVs but if you have a flagship LG OLED and you want to watch DV on disc, you'll have to get the Sony X700M at the very least.
In my experience, the XBox series X is very loud when playing 4k discs. I don't know if it's the dvd mechanism itself or the fan, but either way, unless you plan on listening to the movie at very high volume, the loudness of the machine makes watching 4k discs on xbox a no-go for me.
@@stancartmankennyexactly my experience too! I bought a Panasonic UB820 for this reason and it also outputs Dolby Vision as a bonus.
My ps5 is connected to my Samsung s89C that doesn't support Dolby vision anyway. my sony ubp-x700 is connected to my x95K that supports DV. The setups work great.
What is the point if 3D when no tv is 3D anymore unfortunately
What about the Panasonic DP-UB450GN?
why your room is so dark and why the white globes?
I have a Sony X800M2 and I honestly have no idea what you mean about having to manually set DV.
I enabled it once in the settings and it doesn't seem to stumble or produce bad (non-HDR) results when playing back discs that don't have DV.
Depending on the non-DV content, if you compared them side by side, the colors will be slightly off as the X800M2 is outputing everything as DV which is incorrect - check your TV to see if your TV thinks it's receiving DV
Panasonic UB-450 is a great wee player. Same chip as the 820 and 9000. Supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Dual outputs. Got mine for £180.
I’ve heard the upscaling of DVDs and Blu Rays isn’t as good with the UB450? Have you had much experience with this?
My ub450 I just got runs like shit. Fails reads, skips when lagging, eject button is often unresponsive...
Is it worth it for a Panasonic LZ1500e to get a dolby vision bluray?
I don't think so, the differences are so minor
I had the reavon x200 and had to return it as it was faulty, now have reavon x110.which apart from the analog and dac seems identical to the x200.have been considering buying the magnetar.
I thibk our UB450EK is quite a bit better than your recommended 420
you are correct - I completely missed this as I never knew it existed!
The Sony UBP-X800M2 will turn on Dolby Vision automatically if Bravia Mode is on (for Sony TV's)
Got my UB820 3 months ago for 370€ (~399$) and so far i love it. The HDR optimizer feature is great too!
I have a Panasonic DMP-Ub900 how does this stack up to these on the list?
True but I live the built quality of Panasonic UBP-9000
Do i need the subtitles, errr NOOO,Beyond Annoying man.
UBP-X700/M is terrible. Skips on all kinds of discs.
What about the Panasonic DP-UB450GN?
So no to ps5? Lol
Hi! I have the UBP-X700/M, great device,*it does support 3D Bluray playback* (5:55 ), Dolby Vision works great, even if you have to manually turn it on every time you put in a DV 4k disc, sadly it doesn’t change automatically. If you leave DV On the device sends all content, even SDR, in a forced DV which might not be a problem for many, but it does look forced.
thanks for that correction!
You mention 3D support, what TVs support 3d movies these days?? I have wondered if 3d would be done with lcd glasses since the refresh rates are over 120Hz on many screens so you could get 60hz per eye.
Projectors.
What’s the brightest mastered HDR Blu-ray movie?
I believe Mad Max Fury Road is mastered to 10 000 nits

U8n $1500 (best buy plus 500 off)

So, I'm very happy with my buys.
ps5 plus you can play games
TRUE, it's only an issue if you want to play Dolby Vision discs
@@mikelittrell6200 Thank you, I appreciate the feedback.
Thank you for covering this. I'm actually going to start buying 4k DVD.
How many tvs support 3d & dolby vision on planet earth? I'd guess 0.
I had to return the Sony m800m2, wouldn't play triple layer discs without freezing. My ub820 has been performing perfectly. I'd recommend panasonic ub820 💯 %.
Why would anyone waste the time and money for any Blu-ray player or disc?
Fomo this is a good topic. Maybe you can do what's the best under $2k etc.
Panasonic UB9000 because the UI is just snappier - I don't believe the Magnetar's exotic parts improve image/audio quality for movies
