With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hitting theaters this weekend, we also have to dive into our full, spoiler-free reviews of the film. Stick around to find out where it ends up on our official tier list, but it’s safe to say you should head out to your local theater to see this one.
Also this week, director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise is now available at home so he stopped by the ReelBlend offices (Zoom) to share some of his experiences from making the film, and even gave us a look at an actual hero prop from the film he is keeping safe in his collection. It has been a week now since I first saw DOD, and I can't stop thinking about it... I thought that it was AMAZING!... An exciting, thrilling, and thoroughly entertaining film... and quite a touching and moving film as well... I haven't had a cinematic experience like this in quite a while, that's for sure... Now I have FIVE Indiana Jones movies to love... I don't mind saying it... "I'm on Cloud Nine this week!"
I absolutely LOVED Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!
I love ALL of these movies... I first saw Raiders of the Lost Ark 42 years ago in 1981 when I was
14 years old... And I never dreamed back then that 42 years later, I would be experiencing a FIFTH installment, with Harrison Ford STILL starring and John Williams STILL composing...
Yet, here we are... What a ride it's been!
What can I say... Harrison Ford was BRILLIANT (as always!)... What a joy it was to see one of the
LAST GREAT MOVIE STARS up there on the big screen giving it his all! DOD was a more than fitting send-off for my favorite whip-cracking archeologist, and a huge part of that success is all thanks to the great Harrison Ford!...
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who I had never heard of, aside from her small part in Solo) was also outstanding as Indy's latest co-adventurer... I really liked the character of Helena Shaw...
What a breath of fresh air she was... I thought that the actress did a "Phoebe-nominal" job!...
As a HUGE George Lucas/Steven Spielberg fan, I was initially worried to learn that the two of them would not be directly involved with this film, but director James Mangold (who I also knew nothing about, having not seen any of his previous films) and his writers KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK... You can just tell from interviews with him that Mangold has a massive sincere appreciation for Indiana Jones and its legacy, and for Harrison Ford, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and John Williams... And speaking of John Williams... What can I say, the man is truly the GREATEST FILM COMPOSER of all time, even after 91 years (like we all don't know that ALREADY, right?)
Not only was DOD a thrilling rollercoaster ride of a movie with some great new characters, incredible visuals and exotic locations, amazing action sequences, a terrific "McGuffin" ,and a wildly over-the-top "bonkers" ending (which I loved!), but it was also a very poignant, introspective reflection of Indiana Jones himself, how history has defined him, and his place in history... The movie had such incredible emotional weight and HEART to it... And I absolutely LOVED that.
I will admit it... I got a bit "choked-up and teary-eyed" a few times during this movie...
Yes, I got "emotional" in an Indiana Jones movie... And it felt GREAT!
At this moment, having only seen DOD once, I would rank and rate the series like this:
#1 - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK .........................(10/10)
#2 - THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.................................(10/10)
#3 - THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.....(10/10)
#4 - THE LAST CRUSADE......................................(10/10)
#5 - THE DIAL OF DESTINY....................................(10/10)
I can't help but give them ALL a 10/10, because I love them all so much.. .
ROTLA and TOD are both on my "Top 10 Greatest Films of All Time" list...
These first two films are PERFECT... They have been, are, and always will be
the BEST Indiana Jones movies.. Nothing can touch these two CLASSICS...
And TLC, KOTCS, and DOD are not too far behind!...
PS: And "YES", you read correctly... I ranked KOTCS at #3 and 10/10... I absolutely ADORE the film, and it does NOT deserve the hate that it gets! I feel that detractors need to stop OVER-ANALYZING it... It is supposed to be an over-the-top, campy, pulpy homage to Republic Serials... just like the OTHERS...
So why pick on THIS one? I'm a 1st generation Indy fan, who thinks that ROTLA is one of the top 10 greatest films ever made, and KOTCS doesn't offend ME.... Plus, I find it FASCINATING when people derail this movie, yet they ADMIT that they have only seen it ONCE and given it a chance ONCE...
15 YEARS GO! ... I just don't get it...
Regarding my list... At the moment, I did put DOD last on my list at #5, only because my love of the four Classic films from Lucas and Spielberg knows no end... They are all THAT special to me, having been in my life for so long... But I do love all five films equally for different reasons...
And who knows... maybe after seeing DOD a few more times, I could possibly see a time in the future where I find myself bumping it up a notch to #4... over TLC (which, even though I absolutely adore TLC, I find it to be the slightly weaker film out of the first four)... Time will tell!
So, in conclusion... I absolutely LOVE the Indiana Jones series... I have ALWAYS loved the first four films with a passion... and now I can happily say that I love ALL FIVE films with a passion...
DOD was a thrilling joyride down memory lane!
Finally, always remember...
IF ADVENTURE HAS A NAME, IT MUST BE INDIANA JONES!
It goes Last Crusade, Raiders razor close second, Temple Of Doom, Crystal Skull and then Dial.

I probably don’t fit the mold for most of the audience here - I’m older than Sean, lol. 60, always been a movie fan, actually worked in the business for 10 years in the 80s and 90s, and love the podcast! I graduated high school May of 1981, Raiders came out a month later. I’ll never forget seeing it opening weekend in Indianapolis, and I was blown away. We’d never seen an adventure like that, its impact on movies lasts to this day.
I don’t get the criticisms of Dial of Destiny - it felt like a great send off, I thought it was a great Indy movie, and it really had a couple scenes that were pretty touching. I personally loved it.

To me I put Dial of Destiny above Temple of Doom but Temple of Doom has better more memorable new characters and quotes than Dial of Destiny. There is not much I felt quotable in Dial of Destiny.

Save your money. It's not good man, i'm not even trolling or exaggerating. I was shocked how awful it was. It made Crystal Skull stand out more and a much better film in comparison.

@@spice_krispiesI’m back and I really liked it! It wasn’t as good as raiders or last crusade but that’s ok it was never going to be as good as those. But it was way better than crystal skull. Sorry but crystal skull is so dumb. I can’t stand that movie. I thought James mangold did a great job directing it. Had a lot of fun and loved the ending

I'm 24 years old and crusade is by far the best. Not cinematically but it's the best as a fan or casual film goer.
Great Episode! Super fun to go back and remember all the Indy movies! Sean.. can't agree with you on Last Crusade. Yes, it's the first one I saw in the theaters.. but I do think it works so well on many different levels and is nearly perfect. Here's my list:

I agree Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is one of Harrison Ford’s better performances on screen in a while. Although I have enjoyed his role in the Paramount show 1923.
This movies was trash, didn't feel lile Indiana Jones.
Time Travel is just another Tuesday for Indiana Jones. This is a series where God is located in a warehouse next to a alien mummy. Like James Bond, it's just a fun and goofy series.

I think the guys were too gentle on Crystal Skull. On a rewatch, the first hour is solid but then it drops off, very quickly and continues to get worse.

Never been fan of indi films but mannnn, Harrison Ford is something else this guy. Also horror directors🤗
Without Indy the nazis would never have known where to find the headpiece of the Staff of Ra, which was with Marion in Nepal. So yes, he has a big impact of the story of Raiders.
Honestly…I’ve never watched a complete Indiana Jones movie.. 😅

The only one I'll give an explanation on is why Dial is so high. Main reason is i FELT like I was watching an Indy movie again. And most of all, it made me feel like I want to be Indy again like I did as a child. Mangold found a way to tap into what made Raiders fun.

Had to rewind it when BDK said BTTF 3 was his favorite. Trifling
I think if this podcast can be specifically to 1 director it could be spielberg. If im not mistaken he's jake and sean's favorite director and kevin loves other directors more but i think he considers spielberg up there. A spielberg tier list would be great but could be split into two episodes just like the mcu tier list.

I may be in the minority, but the last 15-20 of Raiders is kind of anti-climactic. The ark opening is amazing, but leading up to that, the submarine and Indy capture are kind of boring.
Dial is a really good movie and a really good Indy movie. Most of all it's fun to watch, it goes so fast that I couldn't believe it's alread two and a half hours. I'm sure that I'll be watching it over and over.
