My hot take: The Rise of Skywalker was so disappointing, it made me appreciate The Last Jedi more. So I agree with Sean - The Rise of Skywalker is a D.

I know they are separate lists but Kevin and Sean have lost their minds if the original Star Wars is not an S but half the MCU is.
They really lost their minds. I was expecting more from Sean being the old guy.
Here's a redeeming quality for Episode II: AOTC - The sequence where Kenobi and Jango Fett are chasing each other through the asteroid field is terrific. I've always loved how they held off on music for most of it and let Ben Burtt's sound design really stand out. Experiencing those Seismic Charges for the first time in the theater was definitely a stand out moment.
My Ray Liotta pick outside of Goodfellas would be The Place Beyond the Pines. One of my favorite of all time, and he is absolutely terrifying in it. Marriage Story is also a good role from him.
Oh man what a good movie! Yeah he is pretty accurate as a scummy lawyer too in Mariage Story

The list was a surprise to be sure but a welcome one. New Hope is always gna be my favorite so I'd put it in S and I definitely would’ve moved some things around albeit only slightly but for the most part it was a pretty agreeable list! Other Ray Liotta movie worth mentioning is Narc from 2002, one of Joe Carnahan's earlier films with some noir-y elements which highlights his acting versatility when given the chance to, and he's great in it! Love everything you all do and in these boring summer days its nice to have you guys to look forward to!

You guys are so much fun to listen to! I enjoy these lists just to hear you argue and your rationales. I agree with most of the list except for: 1) Jake is absolutely correct, New Hope is on the S tier. Those special effects and the story telling are so perfect. 2) Solo should be a B. A little slow at first, but once Han meets Chewie, what a fun ride! 3) Clone Wars series, you all need to watch at least the episodes Jake said he had a list for. The best Star Wars storytelling in ages. Sean, if you liked Rebels, there are story beats from that, which crossover with Rebels. I’d put the whole series at a B, but the main episodes would be A trending S.
Also, to Sean’s point, Bad Batch was just so boring to me, but also reminded me of how I felt at first about Clone Wars; so, I am hoping season 2 is better!
Also, I was so happy that you put Jedi at an A. That was my favorite Star Wars movie as a kid. Loved the other two, but that speeder bike chase and the throne room scenes were spectacular.
Thanks for always ending my week with a great show and so much fun.
And yes, Top Gun is getting repeat views. Going for my 4th showing this weekend. Another Imax showing. Wish I lived near DC to see it at the Air and Space museum. That would phenomenal!

Just came about the channel for the Kevin Smith interview and I've enjoyed the tier lists, except I had to turn this off as soon as you ranked A New Hope an A and not an S. Jake, you deserve a medal for remaining in that discussion lol
Luke’s arc in TLJ isn’t actually that subversive. Look at the main heroes of mythology and fantasy, after their initial triumph they always fall into darker days. King Arthur, Beowulf etc.
TLJ actually took Star Wars back to what inspired Lucas before The Mandalorian was praised for doing it. Kurosawa and classic fantasy/mythology.
I went and saw Top Gun twice; once with the fam in a normal theatre then went to IMAX. THE BEST time watching in IMAX, really felt like I was in the cockpit

I never realized that Episode II & III every line was ADR’d that is news to me. I would have never expected that.

How did no one pick Ray Liotta’s role in Something Wild? Such an underrated gem of a flick (early Jonathan Demme) and Liotta has crackling intensity. So good!

I appreciate the arguments presented, but for me, Force Awakens is a B, at best, The Last Jedi is a kind C and Rise is, without a doubt, an F... the worst live Star Wars movie ever! I would place New Hope in the S tier. Anyway, opinions are what they are and I really loved some of the arguments presented! Amazing work, as ever, and I really love the fact that ReelBlend Podcast is a place where we can agree to disagree in a respectful way!
What I hated about Rise of Skywalker was that he almost completely ignored Last Jedi and never answered the questions we all wanted to know from Rise of Skywalker.
2 Fast 2 Morbius
I felt like Force Awakens messing up things more so Than Luke throwing away the lightsaber. Luke throwing away light saber showed how much Luke has changed since we last saw him. To me the Kanto Bit was a bigger mistake than Luke throwing away lightsaber. My problem is that J.J. Abrams left it on a cliff hanger like that vs answering that question before closing Force Awakens.
I can’t believe you guys went so low on Episode II. It’s not that bad. The action scenes and Obi-Wan and Jango Fett plot is the best in the film.
Rouge One was my first experience with Star Wars ever. I remember being in the cinema and people reacting to things that I didn’t get, but still, I enjoyed the movie. I am not a fan of Star Wars, but Rogue One and The Last Jedi are my favorites of the franchise(I haven’t watch any of the series, only movies).
That's a good pairing, arguably the best looking films of the franchise. My entry film was Ep5, and it just so happens to be the first film I ever watched in theaters. To me, the films count for much more than the shows -- but that's just internal bias. I have to concede that was Filoni has done with THE CLONE WARS series is probably the finest example of what STAR WARS should be, when it comes to scope, tone, and sense of stakes. TCW is the sweet spot. That being said, the films alone?
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (A) -- the gamechanger
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (S) -- the legends are true
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (A+) -- the standard bearer
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (C++) -- the emperor has no clothes
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (D) -- mistakes of ages
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (C) -- damage control
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (B) -- change the game back
Rogue One (A-) -- task failed correctly
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (S+) -- Force ideal
Solo (B++) -- greatest hits
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (C--) -- Gimme a break Bob Iger stood on our necks
New Hope in A-tier is blasphemy. Sorry guys.
"Avatar was a cultural phenomenon..." ...You know James Camera was inspired to become a filmmaker because of A New Hope, right?
Rogue One is an S. It is way beyond an S. Plus it has Easter eggs but does not over use nostalgia.
I prefer the action and Attack of the Clones over the new Trilogy. The action scenes and Obi-Wan mystery he is following is my favorite aspect of Attack of the Clones. I eliminate the Anakin and Padmé plot of Attack of the Clones except when it plays a role in Obi-Wan plot.
Clone Wars tv series has major S episodes and it actually makes the E2 and E3 movies better, since it fills the storyline between the films, and introduces and develops one of he best characters in that universe. Overall it's actually a better series than Rebels. So probably between S and A rating.
Watched episode 8 & 9 in theaters and only watched both once.... "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined."
It would be so cool if you guys all watched Clone Wars/Rebels in preparation for the Ahsoka show next year. Or even if you guys want to do it before. The last four episodes of Clone Wars is considered an S by almost everyone who has watched it and is considered some of the best Star Wars media ever.
The last episodes of TCW are fabulous but I don't think they are the best in the series. It's another case of recency bias in my opinion.
But yeah they're terrific. Whole Rebels is good but the last season of Rebels is simply gold.
I be would say Rogue One and Mandalorian are even on ratings.
I am surprised you gave Force Awakens a higher rating than A New Hope. I honestly hate Force Awakens more than A New Hope. I prefer Last Jedi over Force Awakens. I think Hans death does not work and Kylo Renn waist his mask by taking it off too early.
Problem with the E9 is that Palpatine story invalidates the redemption arc of Anakin Skywalker. Anakin no longer is the chosen one? Otherwise it's a good action movie with obvious flaws. Wish they had a better storyline to explain Rey's abilities.
Force Awakens and Empire Strikes Back are the only S
A New Hope is an A imo... There's a lot of time wasted on wondering around a desert, Mark Hamill is irritating, it just moves a bit slowly. This is obviously with hindsight and there's no denying it's great.
The Last Jedi actually depressed me to the point of not wanting to watch or talk about Star Wars. Rise of Skywalker was bad too but at that point I was just like whatever I guess. The Force Awakens is the only one that i liked and even then I'd only put it in B tier for me because there just wasn't enough originality.
Rian Johnson wrote his movie in a vacuum. He finished the script before TFA even came out. Rise of Skywalker was absolutely the more reactionary film as every clique of fans was pandered to in incredibly poor fashion.

I think that Last Jedi is the best of the New trilogy. It utilizes the classic characters and new characters better than Rise of Skywalker.
I think Solo is a C or D.
A New Hope is my favorite Star Wars film. Then Empire…
I think Bad Batch is better than a C.

I'm like Gabe, the only one among my friends who adore Last Jedi lol. In fact, I'd put it as S-tier. I'd argue it's better than New Hope 😗
My friends and I never agreed on anything Star Wars sequel-wise (especially about Last Jedi) until Rise of Skywalker haha. We all disliked ROS
Also it's interesting Rogue One is well-loved but it was also heavily reworked too, especially the last act was completely redone and directed by Tony Gilroy. That is never brought up as much as Ron Howard in Solo.
Rebels and Clone Wars are high A/S tier for sure.
Bad Batch is a B at worst
As soon as they denied the S to A new hope I was done with this podcast. A New Hope define sci if fantasy till today. Is a quintessential adventure film. I dare to say is a perfect film.
A New Hope deserves to be an S if for no other reason then because the entire rest of the Star Wars saga would not exist were it not for this film conquering the world. Empire might be better, but you can't know a new hope down to prop empire up! this whole episode is tainted!
Canto Bight is a subplot for Finn’s character arc as he needs to see other slave kids and meet a scumbag like DJ to finally commit to becoming a Rebel. It’s blah to watch but it’s necessary, character and story wise.
Book of Boba Fett was not that bad.

S - The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars
A - The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi
B - Return of the Jedi
C - Rogue One, Revenge of the Sith
D - The Rise of Skywalker, Solo, The Clone Wars (Movie)
F - Attack of the Clones, The Phantom Menace

New Hope started a franchise and became a cultural phenomenon. Technically it's ground breaking, and it's the definition of a S. If you're looking at through today's lenses, then it's simply a bias take.
You have to look at it from your current perspective. That's what matters. Look at it as an individual film and not this big cultural shift.

Unbelievable that The Mandalorian is so high. At least you made Rebels justice but again you said that you liked because it ressembled the original trilogy. That is no argument. And it already says it all. The prequel trilogy is not worse because it's different. And then you put Episode IX over Episode II, somehow. Rebels is top Star Wars not for looking like the OT, but for its incredible story and wonderful characters but it isn't the story. Precisely the opposite happens with The Mandalorian. A mid show with terrible story, characters and execution that is only liked for its fan service.
