Feels like a charming nostalgic déjà vu of 20 years ago, reminding us on the times when we were looking for such affordable entry level cameras for ourselves 😏 I wonder if the target group is parents or grannies who want to buy their (grand) children a true camera 🙂
@@mbismbismb sure they can, but they don't want to? 😉 I just had a look though. The cheapest Sony is the a6100 for ~$700, i.e. hardly much more, but a more sophisticated and better equipped camera (e.g. with a touchscreen). Then take into account all the cheap 3rd party lens options for Sony, it looks like an a6100 would be the smarter option to go for?
@@BelarusianInUk Whereas the Canon's is not touchy, and is rigid (immovable), the a6100 actually has touch screen, which is also movable (tiltable up to 180° for a selfie usage). An internet seach for "sony a6100 touch screen" yields 500,000 hits, so there's plenty of choice to confirm that 😉 Possibly you haven't switched on the touching feature so far? Or you had switched it off at the beginning, and then forgot about that as time went by?
Cameras like this are the reason Canon was so popular in the DSLR age, people Started with a canon T2i then upgrade to a 7D or even 5D, good to have in their lineup for sure.
I agree. Their current strategy of releasing inexpensive bodies with EVF and decent autofocus is a great way to get people into the system, and helps address the lack of RF-S mount - or RF, for that matter - lenses. (Yes, we can use EF/EF-S...and an adapter, which I believe misses the point.) Where Canon continues losing to Sony is in large part the breadth of available lenses, many of which are arguably better (linear motors, weather-sealing, etc.) than what Canon offers, and at less cost. Each system has its strengths, but hats off to Canon for clever marketing, and working to adapt to the current market.
@@JasonOverHereTheir non-weather sealed cameras aren't totally open to the elements. They're simply not water proof. Weather sealing isn't very important to most people in practice, even if they think they need it
@@veganpotterthevegan No camera is waterproof, unless built as such. But weather resistant bodies and lenses, if you spend time shooting outdoors, are both valid and useful. A good price for casual users and it can be used with studio strobes since it has main hot shoe. Something to consider if you do casual and studio shoots with people or practice product photography.
Looking forward to you tutorial on this camera.I bought the R100 because it was something that fit my budget. I got the two lens kit. I got the adapter so I can use my other Canon EF type lens. My Sigma and Tamron are great. A 70-210 F2.8:and 150-600 F5-6.3. Those two are ton of weight compared to the camera. I have only used it to test the afternoon I got it. Focus felt a little slow to me. Off to the park Saturday and Monday to try some things out.
I'm a Nikon shooter and I think Canon nailed the lower budget camera game. Nikon's cheapest mirrorless camera with a viewfinder and lens is like £900-1000 and thats just a kit lens. They definitely need more choice at the lower end to contend.
Honestly to me it's missing all the Pro Tools that's necessary it doesn't have the top window for senior settings it doesn't have touch screen or swivel screen these are things that kind of made the cameras unique I really haven't found anything unique about that camera to make me go spend that type of money on it honestly I think the M2 mirrorless is better but I haven't tried that one neither but I just got to be better because he has the touch screen and my nephew actually has it and he showed it to me it's smaller than my 80D 80d but
For most people that are buying a camera after having use smart phone cameras, this camera wouldn't be a smart choice. The camera has too many limitations and lacks basic features that people are used to having on their cell phones. If keeping the price down to $500 is essential, you would be much better served by buying a used camera body and lens. By doing so, you could easily get a camera body that has built in image stabilization, a more user-friendly LCD screen and have better (and more) controls which make it possible to make crucial adjustments while the camera is held up to the eye. Both of you have contributed a lot of helpful videos for aspiring photographers and I have certainly benefited from your help since I've been dabbling in photography for 25 years or so, but this video comes across as more of a advertisement for the Canon and Adorama (which is a great retailer) rather than a solid review.
@@callefty3670 In recent years, I haven't watched that many of their videos. One reason is that I'm still using an Olympus micro 4/3 kit and they seem to have little interest in that product line anymore and I don't have a problem with that. And all of us have our own field of interest when it comes to viewing photography related videos on TH-cam.
Be curious to see how this goes. I came into digital from film so using my Dad's F mount glass on a D3200 was a natural transition into digital photography. Now that I have kids with a curiosity for photography, will the major manufacturers consider the cheap entry point again? And the success of the X100v and Q3, could we see a return to point and shoot? It's a stretch and I think the niche market will still be the niche market but interesting time with the film resurgence and mirrorless revolution where we might go from here.
I still occasionally use their previous mirrorless entry camera with an evf.. no, not the M50!.. but the a3000.. it's image quality was pretty good, but everything else was pretty basic or plastic or both..
I am seriously considering upgrading from my canon M50, to a R6. money is kind of tight so would really see a review from you on the camera. Did look at the R7 but didn't like the on/off switch which if not careful could result in going to video instead of off.
Is this a full frame or crop sensor? I’ll assume crop, but, I don’t recall y’all saying. If this is FF I’d consider it a bargain 2nd or third camera for my video productions…
Since most of the recommend lenses are RF (fullframe) - I would rather look for a used EOS R. The camera is faster (R has 5fps with AF / 8 without while RF 100 is 3.5 with / 6.5 without), has touch/swivel and the 30MP from the 5D4 is better than the 24MP from the 80D in all areas (Low light, pixel size, Dynamic Range even if minimal,...)
Is the hot shoe capable of accepting 3rd party flash units? I had a 2000D (T7), and Canon thought it was appropriate to design an inexpensive, entry-level DSLR with a hot shoe that can only accept Canon brand external flashes. I think there may be one or two compatible 3rd party flashes, but they're almost as expensive as Canon. The 2000D probably can't even use the most basic flash that would work with it to its full potential. Anyway, it looks like a decent camera, and a likely successor to the Rebel line. Hopefully Canon is trying to make its product line more accessible to newbies, amateurs and people on a budget, not just with the camera itself, but also with lenses and other accessories that enhance the experience.
I mainly shoot flowers and foliage as a hobby. Yes, please to the R100 for me. Update. I own a R100 ! I still don't have RF glass for it so I use the mount adapter to pair my EF lenses with my R100. I upgraded from a Canon 5D Mark III and a Rebel T7.
Hi! I hope you are doing great. Just one question, since you have the R100. Do you find it suitable for casual use, street photography and of course flower shooting? Sorry to bother you. Thanks
Great to see a basic camera like this that is mirrorless and accepts RF lenses suitable for full-frame cameras. Looks like nice back-up or travel camera, too, when we want to leave the FF at home. Question: is this APS-C with a 1.6 crop factor?
I am glad that Canon is making an entry camera. Its the most effective way to bring new users to the market. Hopefully Sony will bring out a replacement for the 5T, one day.
Here in Canada the 18-150 is $CDN750 on amazon and the Camera is $CDN570 total plus a memory card at $30 with Tax puts you over $CDN1500 so this is twice the price compared to in the USA. Thanks Canon!
How come it's always Tony running towards the camera? He needs a break, Chelsea's turn. Love your videos still using my Canon 50D and Olympus E500 but getting something new for retirement in a couple of years
Love this, hope all big brands will do something like this. Would love an aps-c comparison video across the major brands, maybe even compared to entry level full frame. Am still on the fence, what do I trade my DSLR (Nikon 5600) aps-c for?
If you are shooting portraits, D5600 is still capable camera (paired with decent lens like 50/1,8). Are there any features that would make you switch to mirrorless? I personally like the price of Z30.
NICE = LIKE :) ..but WHY didn't mention R50 as FIRST BETTER OPTION? - Totally trimmed to the base R100 is suitable much more for institutional usage like taking solid quality product photos and/or for driving licences, passports, etc. & basic fixed "studio" video usage for starting YTbers (best with ext. monitor) or for some interviews + quality webcam, R50 (= baby R10 ;) is IMHO first reasonable option for photo + video newcomer enthusiast - last but not least from this reason that her SoC HEART is Digic X (same as R10 :) instead previous 8gen in R100... - R100 = also OLDER APS-C Sensor => LESS Gain + LESS Dynamic Range + MORE NOISE... - DIFFERENCE between R10 -> R50 is MUCH MORE SMALLER, than between R50 -> R100 i.e. SAVING first $200 is the WORST POSSIBLE "investment"... => CONCLUSION: R50 is MUCH BETTER OPTION ( GOLD MEAN :) , than R100 HISTORICAL ZOMBIE (..Fixed Display, Older Main Parts + Many Others HW + SW WEAKNESSES...)
Tony and Chelsea, there was not any content on Fuji X-H2/X-H2s and X-T5. Do you plan any review in the future? I personally is very interested in Comparison of A7 IV vs X-H2/X-H2s. They are same price and size so I would be interesting to find in which cases would you prefer the APS-C cameras. Is it wildlife as they have higher fps and stacked sensor in X-H2s? Is it landscape with high reolution on X-H2? I expected Sony to domainate the portrait though.
I understand why advanced amateurs would lament loss of touch screen but I think the point of this camera is for people to just leave it in "set it and forget it" mode and proceed to let the camera do the work, all the while bringing in better images than their smart phone can deliver. Particularly as you get older you're less inclined to want to fiddle with sometimes detailed and complex choices.
Nice with a budget option, but the lack of USB-C charging and lack of touchscreen support are both really wierd omissions. A regular smartphone does both of these 🙂
The lack of flip screen alone basically removes this as an option for the majority of their target demographic. Truly don't know what they are thinking.
Based upon the shutter speed during the action photo sequence of Tony, it appears he reached 8mph. That speed if maintained would assure he could complete a marathon in about 3 hours.
Would have liked to see more images taken with the actual camera and more of a comparison with a smartphone. This was more like a general first time buyer video, but maybe thats what y'all intended
Canon must realize they're going after iPhone users. 1080p/60 is not gonna cut it. And nobody wants to fiddle with the buggy Canon image transfer software. 9 out of 10 people can't distinguish between iphone and Canon pics anyway. Its a losing battle
thanks to it's affordability, this camera got my daughter into photography...I would have loved a new mirrorless camera at this price point in 2010 and even today...I am still shooting Nikon dslr's and elder fuji and olympus, which I dearly love for the mirrorless experience, but the AF response of this RF 100 would be so much better then a Fuji xt1 or a Olympus em5. One doesn't need a flip or touch screen to produce great images :)
In a world of $3500+ camera bodies bravo to Canon for making something beginners or people that just don't want to spend a lot of money can buy. Problem with other manufacturers is that they ignore this price point and a large amount of people wanting to explore photography.
Feels like a pity that more sophisticated cameras feel the need to dispense with simple scene selections. They seem to save a lot of messing around no matter who you are, and you retain option to take full control if required.
And plus I'm not interested in going mirrorlist but that was a great video TH-cam do excellent job at explaining the cameras and you guys are awesome I watch your show all the time
No, just no. You can't be serious recommending the R100. R50, I totally get it, the burst rate and autofocus capabilities alone make it super worth it, if it's not the pretty strong video for the price, touch and flip out screen etc. But the R100 is THE SAME THING as a Canon M50 mark II, which itself is just a firmware update to the original M50. You can still buy the M50 for SUPER CHEAP brand new in stores, or used on KEH or MPB, either the mark 1 or mark 2 versions. It has the same processor, the same sensor, the same autofocus, the same video specs, but on top of that you get a bit smaller camera, a touch interface and a flip out screen. And if that wasn't enough, the basic kit lens bundled with it (15-45mm) is MILES better than the 18-45 RF-S kit lens. And the EF-M range of lenses makes a ton of sense for beginner users as you have very good entry level lenses that are good and cheap, as well as some 3rd party options from both Sigma and Viltrox. NOBODY should buy expensive RF glass for an R100, it makes absolutely 0 sense for a beginner user. The R100 is just a cheap and lazy way for Canon to get some ROI on the product lines of the Digic 8 processor and that older sensor while sharing parts with the M50 and the R50 to reduce cost as much as possible. There is literally NOTHING new with this camera, it's just an M50 with less practical ergonomics and an RF mount that doesn't have lenses for that kind of camera yet. no, no no and no. You cannot be serious recommending this, You guys litterally are the only people I've seen having a positive opinion of that POS while the previous gen, cheaper camera from the same brand is better in almost every way.
Does this have clean HDMI out? Will this overheat if used to stream for extended periods? I'm going to guess that without a flip screen it's not a very good fit for a budget streaming camera. At this price point I know that there have to be some compromises. I also heard no mention of image stabilization. If anyone know of an affordable camera that ticks all of these boxes I'd appreciate the info.
RF 100-400, RF 35/1.8, RF 85/2. There are not equivalent to them in the dying EF-M system. Adapted EF lenses are bigger / clumsier and if you want the same quality we either talk EF 100-400 gen 2 (very costly but better) or Tamron (3rd party with all pros and cons)
It is always my suggestion to anyone wanting to get into photography, to get a nice condition, used Fujifilm X-T3… Which you can get for around the same price as the R100. The 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens is fantastic, and a used one is a few hundred bucks. That’s an awesome package for well under 1k. It’s the perfect tool for learning the ‘exposure triangle’ and the art of photography… And its specs still hold up (as does the build quality), so you won’t outgrow the camera as your skill level improves. I’ve had various Sony A7R models and currently own a Canon R5, but the X-T3 is the one camera I know I’ll never sell. It’s just fun and rewarding. I know the point of this video is buying new gear from Adorama (apologies for hijacking it), but for stills photography, things haven’t really progressed since 2017. The X-T3 or Sony A7III (if you want full frame) would be the way I’d go… But I’m just some guy in a comment section with no affiliate links, so take that with a handful of salt.
Love your work. However, you really need to crank up your volume...and put a little more of the higher frequencies in your audio. You want to add just a touch of crispness for voice clarity...just sayin for a friend. 😶 As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying. From the little Red Planet. 👽👽👽👽👽😁
For some reason I don’t feel the real Tony giving this review; not sure if he doesn’t want to confuse his audience. Doesn’t feel like one of his reviews.
So it took Canon exactly 10 years to produce a Sony a3000 clone cause that is what this basically is, the body looks like it, also has a fixed screen on the rear and same (twin?) viewfinder, and it most probably handles like it. The one main difference I can see from this footage is the front dial, that's something the a3000 did not have. Clone or not, its a great strategic move from Canon as not even Sony themselve's do anything in this market-segment anymore.
That is because nobody buys those cameras anymore. The smartphones with clever software beats them most of the time. Here (in EOS) you have superior hardware. Which is totally let down by the most crappy software Canon can offer... 😅🤷♂️
This feels like a rebrand of the 10 year old Sony A3000 . Only reasons to get this instead of that 10 year old camera are autofocus and may be video because no 4K in A3000. But A3000 has much wider lens selection because of E Mount. Now tell me why should anyone choose this "new" Canon camera instead of 9 year old Sony A6000? For that useless 4K mode? The A6000 is now around 300-400$, has a lot more lens options, slightly larger sensor, tilt screen and on top of everything, 11fps burst compared to 6.5 of the new 2023 camera.
How does it handle in low light outdoors? The ISO capabilities of the Rebel are extremely limited. My a7r2 is fields ahead. While I know it’s a full frame vs an apsc is it any better? I’m looking for a cheap mirrorless for railroad photography

Guys - this video was so incredibly well made. So perfectly fit for the audience who will be watching over the coming years. Well done!!!
Got my first Dslr and now got your photography book! I've been watching your channel nonstop. I'm excited to learn even more from your book. 🙏
I just had a look though.
@@tubularificationeda6100 does not have a touchscreen. Otherwise a great camera. I have it along with my a9ii
(Yes, we can use EF/EF-S...and an adapter, which I believe misses the point.)
Where Canon continues losing to Sony is in large part the breadth of available lenses, many of which are arguably better (linear motors, weather-sealing, etc.) than what Canon offers, and at less cost.
As a general rule, I avoid trying to categorize large groups of people with assumptions, but I do recognize the value and need for certain segments.
Ask me how I know…(That’s rhetorical; I’d rather not discuss damaged gear.) 🤨
@@JasonOverHere never said they're not useful. But we've been using non-weather sealed lenses in harsh environments for decades. I've also had weather sealed lenses fail on me due without exposure to extreme elements. Ask me how I know(that's rhetorical)
@@veganpotterthevegan Then your lenses are weather sealed, or you’ve had good luck!

You should film the video reviews with the camera you are reviewing.
Exactly.
A good price for casual users and it can be used with studio strobes since it has main hot shoe. Something to consider if you do casual and studio shoots with people or practice product photography.
Cold shoe?
They frequently dance right on the edge of blatant commercialism, but this time way, way over the line.
TH-camrs love not mentioning the thousands of used cameras out there. You can get a Panasonic G9 body for 500 bucks.....
R50 also has a flipping screen and is cheaper than r10 that you suggested
Yeah we suggest the R50 also
@@TonyAndChelsea sorry my bad
I still occasionally use their previous mirrorless entry camera with an evf.. no, not the M50!.. but the a3000.. it's image quality was pretty good, but everything else was pretty basic or plastic or both..
I am seriously considering upgrading from my canon M50, to a R6. money is kind of tight so would really see a review from you on the camera. Did look at the R7 but didn't like the on/off switch which if not careful could result in going to video instead of off.
Great video!
By chance,Does the r100 offer clean HDMI out? I didn't see that in the video section...
Not sure if you mentioned it lacks in camera stabilization. Would require a more expensive stabilized lens for low light or sports
Sports are Rigged. Who the f cares
If you can get this for $300 bucks with the lens, i think its a steal
Is this a full frame or crop sensor?
I’ll assume crop, but, I don’t recall y’all saying.
If this is FF I’d consider it a bargain 2nd or third camera for my video productions…
Yes, APS-C with a 1.6X crop.
Watered down M50 with and RF mount. May as well save for an R50.
Is it better than the zve10 is the question.
Yes, I tested this so we could confidently recommend the Flashpoint flashes.
Question: is this APS-C with a 1.6 crop factor?
yep
What camera and lens did you use to shoot this video?
Aww I miss Connecticut....I lived in Hartford, Windsor, Windsor Locks, Bloomfield and Litchfield over a 10 year period. Great state!
I am glad that Canon is making an entry camera. Its the most effective way to bring new users to the market. Hopefully Sony will bring out a replacement for the 5T, one day.
Unless I missed it, there's nothing in this video about sensor size, which strikes me as kind of a serious omission.
does it record sound at all out of the box or do you have to buy a seperate mic?
Feels like you guys forgot the R50 exists? That’s the better upgrade than the R10?
Here in Canada the 18-150 is $CDN750 on amazon and the Camera is $CDN570 total plus a memory card at $30 with Tax puts you over $CDN1500 so this is twice the price compared to in the USA. Thanks Canon!
I bought this today because of price & quick autofocus.
I can't use optical viewfinders with or without glasses with my prescription.
the dynamic range in 4K mode is WAY better in that shot. weird I'd chose it for that.
The wildlife photos are really rough. It's no surprise though... shooting in the shade at f11, ISO 6400, with a crop sensor won't do wonders.
This camera is a steal for getting into the RF lenses and for gift to family or friends
NICE = LIKE :)
..but WHY didn't mention R50 as FIRST BETTER OPTION?
- Totally trimmed to the base R100 is suitable much more for institutional usage like taking solid quality product photos and/or for driving licences, passports, etc. & basic fixed "studio" video usage for starting YTbers (best with ext. monitor) or for some interviews + quality webcam, R50 (= baby R10 ;) is IMHO first reasonable option for photo + video newcomer enthusiast - last but not least from this reason that her SoC HEART is Digic X (same as R10 :) instead previous 8gen in R100...
- R100 = also OLDER APS-C Sensor => LESS Gain + LESS Dynamic Range + MORE NOISE...
Amazon has it on sale for $299 right now, insane value!
Tony.. Do you still have KEH coupon code to sell my gears to KEH?
Beware that R100 can’t custom define to the control ring and can’t charge battery through usb type c port.
Does the diopter allow someone with say 20/750 vision use it without glasses?
There's nothing wrong with keeping your glasses on. You'd still be able to scan the scenery and quickly look through the viewfinder for the shot.
Is the camera meant for photography students (or for procurement in photography schools)?
And it looks like it's meant to replace the 4 digit series
students? well prbbly canon m200 or bundles : 6d, 77d, sl2, 2000d (t7), m100/700d and also d3400....d7200 - maybe A68/a5100 - fuji xA5/7/xt100 - Oly eM5II/M10-3 - Lumix G7/Gx85
Nice with a budget option, but the lack of USB-C charging and lack of touchscreen support are both really wierd omissions. A regular smartphone does both of these 🙂
😂 love the video. i am watching the video before going to exam hall
Is there a "live view" through the HDMI-Out?
Canon must realize they're going after iPhone users. 1080p/60 is not gonna cut it. And nobody wants to fiddle with the buggy Canon image transfer software. 9 out of 10 people can't distinguish between iphone and Canon pics anyway. Its a losing battle
I agree fuji has the worst app. I was appalled by the quality of the app. Now I just don’t use the app at all.
is there a nikon that beats this r100 for the same price area?
thanks to it's affordability, this camera got my daughter into photography...I would have loved a new mirrorless camera at this price point in 2010 and even today...I am still shooting Nikon dslr's and elder fuji and olympus, which I dearly love for the mirrorless experience, but the AF response of this RF 100 would be so much better then a Fuji xt1 or a Olympus em5. One doesn't need a flip or touch screen to produce great images :)
How is this better than an M50, which has a flip screen?
In a world of $3500+ camera bodies bravo to Canon for making something beginners or people that just don't want to spend a lot of money can buy. Problem with other manufacturers is that they ignore this price point and a large amount of people wanting to explore photography.
Will my EF-S lens work on this R 100?
Canon r100 crop sensor is 1.5 or 1.6 times crop??
Feels like a pity that more sophisticated cameras feel the need to dispense with simple scene selections. They seem to save a lot of messing around no matter who you are, and you retain option to take full control if required.
What about a well looked after CANON EOS DIGITAL REBEL 450D XSI + TAMRON 18-270mm Travel Zoom.
I just got one of these refurbished from Canon with the kit lens for $329 🤯
And plus I'm not interested in going mirrorlist but that was a great video TH-cam do excellent job at explaining the cameras and you guys are awesome I watch your show all the time
I appreciate that!
It’s hard to recommend a dead mount (Canon M) to a beginner investing in a new camera system.
Thank you...
Great review thanks
Does this have clean HDMI out? Will this overheat if used to stream for extended periods?
I'm going to guess that without a flip screen it's not a very good fit for a budget streaming camera. At this price point I know that there have to be some compromises.
I also heard no mention of image stabilization.
If anyone know of an affordable camera that ticks all of these boxes I'd appreciate the info.
It has a digic 8.
I never had overheat issue with this chip on my m50, even taking photos on direct sun on a racetrack
Canon offers the R50 that comes with a Flippy screen if the R10 is too much for you
There we are!
Why this one and not a used M50???
The kit lenses sucks
How does it do whith sports in low light
This or the M50 mark ii?
How is A6100 already not better than this? No dual pixel AF, No 4K, no touchscreen!
Tony's running was very stunning and brave 😂
Love your work. However, you really need to crank up your volume...and put a little more of the higher frequencies in your audio. You want to add just a touch of crispness for voice clarity...just sayin for a friend. 😶
As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying.

For some reason I don’t feel the real Tony giving this review; not sure if he doesn’t want to confuse his audience. Doesn’t feel like one of his reviews.
no touchscreen is too much to lose
I have a feeling that these photographers enjoy adorama
i cant tell is it a review video or one of those canon rep commercial video.
To be fair, they’re still selling t7s to this day… they probably weren’t really pressed to advance the low end digital camera market
That is because nobody buys those cameras anymore. The smartphones with clever software beats them most of the time.
Here (in EOS) you have superior hardware. Which is totally let down by the most crappy software Canon can offer... 😅🤷♂️

No touchscreen!
Total garbage 🗑
Don't waste your money.
That's a lot of money..

What is your primary camera?
@@spatt833 canon r10 wit EF 70-200 f2.8 IS II
This feels like a rebrand of the 10 year old Sony A3000 . Only reasons to get this instead of that 10 year old camera are autofocus and may be video because no 4K in A3000.
But A3000 has much wider lens selection because of E Mount.
Now tell me why should anyone choose this "new" Canon camera instead of 9 year old Sony A6000? For that useless 4K mode?
The A6000 is now around 300-400$, has a lot more lens options, slightly larger sensor, tilt screen and on top of everything, 11fps burst compared to 6.5 of the new 2023 camera.
I'm staying with my 80D touch screen everything
How does it handle in low light outdoors? The ISO capabilities of the Rebel are extremely limited. My a7r2 is fields ahead. While I know it’s a full frame vs an apsc is it any better? I’m looking for a cheap mirrorless for railroad photography
Now hopefully Nikon will make a mirrorless d3/5xxx successor
