On February 7th, 2023, Canon announced the new Compact, lightweight APS-C EOS R50. This comes after Sony released their first Alpha series interchangeable lens vlog camera on July 7th, 2021, almost two years before.
I've done a ton of research online and dug into the specs of both of these cameras and on paper, this is a very close match-up. I was hoping to come up with a definitive answer on which one is better.

I love the Canon R50, but with that said, I already own 3 high end Canon cameras for my professional work. However, I chose the R50 because with the adapter, I can still use all my EF and EF-S lenses on it. The main reason I bought the R50 is for street work with my R24mm f/2.8 which comes out to about 38mm on APC. Perfect for street photography IMHO. A good photographer can usually pick up any brand camera and take excellent pictures. It's not so much the gear as it is your personal vision, subject matter and working with the available light. I chose Canon and will continue to because I just prefer them.

Couldn't agree with you more shooting high-end Canon bodies the R50 was a great little surprise. I think you meant to say f/1.8 on the RF 24mm. And I couldn't agree more. I have the RF 24 on mine as well. A terrific combo for sure. very light and compact you could take it anywhere well almost anywhere.

My settings are manual 100% of the time, and that includes focusing. I was using a Canon DSLR with the usual through-the-lens optical viewfinder. In daylight, I would and the do eight shots with different shutter or aperture settings, go indoors to a shaded spot, pick the best shot, and delete the other seven. Often the difference of a 1/3 stop made a big difference in the clarity of the picture. I bought the Canon M50 Mark II mainly to get the electronic viewfinder to save all that work! I doctor my RAW pictures a bit with Corel, but I have discovered that you've got to fix your mistakes before they happen.

It's the Canon for me as a beginner because I like the image quality and you said the menu was easier to use. The ZV-E10 seems to be more what I need and based on your video seems like its the one. The more research I do the more I want to just jump on the FX30 cause then I can stick with that for much longer time as it will be more pro and take me further. I do weddings as I just started 2 months ago and did 5 weddings with my iphone 11 and a gimble. Fx30 is what i really want but double the price than the zve10 so its such a battle but it would be my very first camera. So hard to choose as I have watched many of your videos and others to figure out what makes most sense and if i should just take the leap and get the fx30. Definitely more drawn to Sony for a few reasons.

Aps-C sensors are different on Canon. They are a bit smaller, that’s why crop on Canon Aps C camaras is 1.6x and not 1.5x. Maybe that is the reason why the ZV e10 is better in low light.

If the problem is the availability of lenses for the R50, here is the solution: just buy a Canon EF to Canon RF adapter... With this adapter, you will have a much larger number of lenses available compared to the availability of Lenses for the Sony E system. You can also mount all the R series lenses on the Canon R50. I think just being able to shoot a 10-bit video on the Canon R50 already makes it twice as good as the Sony ZV-E10. I have the Sony ZV-E10 and I also have a Canon R7. Greetings!!!

Agree! 1)My issue is that I hate having always to carry my action camera w/me to shoot certain things at 240fps w/sound. If only any of these cameras could shoot 240fps w/sound 1920x1080 for at least 30seconds, I'd buy any. 2)This video has a mistake, Focal Length in SONY...x by 1.5 and in Canon x by 1.6! And as of 4/11/2024 (this day I'm leaving my comment) Canon already has a 10-18mm Wide Angle Zoom Lens great for Vlogging. 3)Sony has more lenses, but "Sony brand Lenses" are more expensive than Canon's. Yes you can buy other brands that will work w/the Sony cameras and there's a larger selection.

If your going to remain in the Canon eco-system. I’d strongly recommend saving a little more and instead pick up the R50 or the R10. The R100 is a really stripped down M50, it works good but there’s a better option for just a little more. The R50 or R10 would be much more worthwhile purchase, you can still pick up an adapter and use your current collection of glass to use with the camera. As an M50 owner, I just wanted to let you know what it is your getting with an R100.

    • @plhilmar1

@@cashmoney2159 this is just my perspective, but the Sony ZV-E10 and the Nikon Z30 would be hands down better picks than the R100 as camera choices. But I'd give the edge to the Sony ZV-E10, for the wider selection of glass available today. Compared to the R100, you can't lose if you go with either Sony or Nikon. Just go with whichever is the better priced. If you choose the R100 due to cost, please I encourage that you just save a little more for a better over all camera.

It's funny when I hear people talk about lens selection, or lack of on the Canon side. Owning six of the R series bodies, including the R50 and dozens of RF, RFS, EF and EFS lenses. No one can tell me a focal length that's not covered. And unlike other adapters out there, theEF to RF adapter is merely a spacer (there are no optics added to the light path). It adds the mirror box distance that the DSLR had to what is missing on the mirrorless cameras. Most people say the EF lenses work better on R series bodies, but this is only due to the superior dual phase on sensor focusing system. I can tell you one thing shooting with higher end Canon, DSLR's and R series bodies the little R50 was a huge surprise. This little dynamo is compact easy to carry around and is not a dumb down entry level model. They did that to the R100, which they needed to do.

ZV-E10 performed better because Sony has the smallest distance between the sensor and the lens mount.
I believe its called flange distance. The shorter flange distance makes light travel more directly to the sensor, therefore making the image look less noisy

  • @trevourlance27

    1. Canon's sensor isnt an EXMOR CMOS, as Exmor is a Sony Sensor Brand
Canon uses their own proprietary DPAF II sensors
    2. Canon's APS-C crop factor is 1.6x vs everyone else (Sony/Nikon/Fuji/Lumix/OM @1.5X)
    3. The reason why the ZV-E10 has better low light sensitivity is because it uses an EXMOR BSI CMOS (back-side illuminated sensor) which allows it to have better light-gathering capability
Canon's 24.2 MP DPAF II isn't a BSI which explains the low light diff.
    4. Out of the box Canon's color is miles ahead better .. however for shooting with LOG profiles, the sony S-Log is easier to work with in post prod. (coming from an owner of an R10 and A7 II)

Good points. Although you can get an RF to EF mount adapter for $99. Which opens up the door to a lot more lenses and some cheaper lenses. From what I've seen, the RF-EF adapter works very well with the RF mount. So, there is that. Personally, I've been thinking about an "extra" camera for just shooting TH-cam videos and quick vlogs. And the Canon R50 and the Sony ZV-E10 fall into that category quite well. But, to be honest, I've been holding out because the new ZV-E1 by Sony looks pretty dope.

I wont necessarily be vlogging, just taking pics and vids for my friends and fam to see what im up to. I think i like most of what sony has to offer i only have a few hangups that make me not sure if i should go with the sony.
The first thing is, is there a way to get image quality on the zve10 that is similar to the r50? I like the way the colors and stuff looks on the cannon and im a novice with editing so im not sure how to edit the footage from the sony to have better colors.
Is there a work around for the recording time limit of the cannon? Im not sure ill ever record for an hour straight to begin with but the idea of having a hard limit worries me whereas there is no limit with the sony as long as there is space on the sd card.

    @dougkelly8956 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Yes, the 'Canon problem'. Very nice bodies generally speaking, but lenses are a problem. Particularly for APS-C. The R50 pretty much requires use of EF-S lenses with the adapter to have anything close to a viable lineup, particularly in wider FLs used for video. I have the R7 primarily as a birding camera and so am interested in the R50 as a backup/hybrid/video body. I strongly suspect that the 'Film Alliance' audience would be better served by the Sony in most cases, though.

And if its easier to upgrade to a better low aperture lens on the Sony - that's the way to go for me. But then again, it's all about priorities. If you're new to shooting images/videos and you don't really care about post-production/editing - the Canon with it's better out of camera image quality may be for you.

Like in this part of the video: 6:07. Thank you!
