Hey great video! Just to clarify, once the torsion spring is relieved with 30ish 1/4 turns, will there be no tension or extreme danger after that? I just need to remove an 8x7’ in a building I’m taking down
Whish I'd known this 20 years ago! I would have replaced my own garage door! The moron who did it left the old tracks, and torsion springs for my WOODEN (Several hundred pounds) door intact (mostly), but bent all to kingdom come. Bet he didn't know any of the stuff you talked about, and probably hurt himself in the process. Why else would the steel tracks be cut short, and bent up a few feet from the opening for the door, and ONE of the 2 springs all unwound and looking a mess, while the other was still wound? (Frankly, I've come to realize that that wooden garage door was the best part of the house. Better than the 3 wire telephone wire [a standard for about 10 seconds in the 40's], but worse than 2 wire after that. And Better than the REDWOOD beams used in the rooves of the house and garage. [That part of the rooves felt like it was about to break when you walked on the roof.] And better than the 2 wire electrical system of the house and garage.) With a new, aluminum (practically illumination foil) and track installed right next to the parts of the old one he left attached to the garage. I've never seen a worker install a new appliance or device AROUND the old one. Had to get the owner of Overhead Doors to come in and fix new door himself, as it literally started to fall apart just a few weeks later. Had to mention AMX to get the owner to stop avoiding me. But he called me in 15 minutes after a month of avoiding me, when I asked his secretary if they took AMX. Thant's some clout AMX has, as I neither paid with it, or called them about it.
My garage door does not have any springs in the center like that the little drum like things on each end and one of them has popped or come apart in the spring is the cable is fell off of it and the door comes up cockeyed never seen one of these before
I'm 53 and just dismantled a 17 x 8 door by myself for the first time in under 3 hours. I watched a few youtube videos, bought the right tools (mainly spring bars and square socket) and went to town. I was methodical and only removed what parts were absolutely necessary, starting with loosening the springs of course. My wife helped me finish up for the last hour. I also consider moving the ladder around a lot and going up and down it many times to be 100% more dangerous than tensioning/detensioning the springs. For years I've heard how it's so dangerous but I had both springs unwound in 15 minutes and didn't think it was any big deal. It just takes a proper checklist and paying attention.
I took garbage out to the garage one night, to put in garbage can. I opened the top of the can to put the bag in and one of the tension springs on my garage door broke!!! Unbelievable loud sound, in the dark, right above my head. I said a silent prayer, "God, I don't know what this is, but it has me - guess i'll see you in a few."
Really like the guy. Hits the key points that professionals learn from experience. I like the details he provides along with explanations. Entertaining and has a pleasant voice and personality. Easy understand and isten to.
great information, I just cleaned my garage for my husband who is disabled and the spring broke on the left side. I understood the tutorial perfectly and paid close attention to the dangers of doing this as a DYI. Thank you! very informative. MaddieG
My wife ran into our garage with our Tundra this a.m. After my soul came back from the big noise(I was sleeping) and a few laughs and jokes... I'm sure glad I found your video, thanks for these tips!
Thank you much for this info. I worked for a general contractor for a time and have experience in finish carpentry, tile and stone, and drywall but had never worked with overhead doors, and frankly was petrified of attempting any work on the torsion spring / counterbalance. Well, now because I'm renovating a pre-1978 home, no installer wants to do a replacement for me. With your advice, I'm confident I can do it safely.
Thank you for the videos! I didn't wake up planning to become a garage door repair expert, but your videos gave me the confidence to give it a go. You kept it simple enough this novice could safely get the cable & rollers back on the door when they came flying off after a mishap (What a way to end 2021!). While I am still a far cry from an expert, I am proud to say I can now use the garage door again AND as an added bonus, I still have all my fingers and toes!
21yr garage door vet here. This is one of the best videos I’ve watched on you tube. There are definitely dangers to garage doors. Took 8 hrs for my chin to stop bleeding when I got hit by a winding bar. Back when I was a rookie. Know of guys who have lost the use of their hand after 1 mistake. If your going to do this yourself all we ask is please be careful. Good job my friend.
I'm a 69 year old mechanic and helped build homes I designed with my family since age 10. Daddy's girl here. I am so happy you stressed the safety issues of doing this job. Safety is the most important I think with any type job you are doing. Being seriously injured can happen in a second if you don't have the whole job planned in steps. Keep up the good work passing your excellent experience along to others. One thing I would like for you to do is wear Safety glasses for sure. Gloves would be a plus too but I'm not good working in gloves either. Didn't get to make that choice when working on equipment in a chemical plant. Lol 😆 you have a great time doing what you love ❤️
Very valuable information. Simple, clear and easy to understand with a pleasant sprinkle of humor. I'm grateful to you because you educated me enough to realize that my garage door issue is out of my skill set , hense decided to let the pros do their job. Thank you very much for your time and efforts.
My father is removing his garage door and something tells me he’s gonna want to use screw drivers to loosen the spring. Headed to Home Depo to “ surprise him” with the tension rods to unwind the spring. Thank you!
Great safety tips. Wish you started by wearing safety glasses though. Seems like good rule of thumb is don't mess with anything until the springs' tension is removed using proper tools.
Thank you for posting this video and for elaborating on the dangers of working on your own garage door. I especially appreciate you taking the time to explain the risks in detail. Also, nice thatyou are using a professional microphone. That, along with the green screen, made it easy for the viewers to watch and listen. Very nicely done, my friend. Can't wait to watch some of your other videos.
I can tell that you are experienced when turning the spring because you never let go of the first winding bar when you inserted the second bar. I see a lot of videos where people let go of the first while inserting the second. If something slips the first bar can go flying.
I'm one of those DIY'rs that took the bottom plate off without securing the torsion rod. I'd be wearing an eye patch today if I'd been leaning forward 2 inches farther. The plate literally sliced the bill of my ball cap and gave me a concussion. I should've known there are garage door tutorials on youtube. At least I feel better about being smart enough not to use a fountain pen to wind the springs, lol.
Good morning, great video and thanks for the tips. I have a question, Why does my garage door bounce while going up for the first one foot? It started after I installed a new motor.
Hey Parts4GarageDoors Guy! One of my garage doors, bottom section is a disaster, so I am reviewing YT for ideas, and I found your channel. My system is not a torsion bar setup, rather a coil spring on each side. I watched your video and you made me aware of the torsion bar system so thank you. But, when you did the Bloopers and Outtakes, that was great, I loved it! Thumbs-up and subbed was a no brainer. Have a great day!
This was a great video. Most people have no idea how dangerous it is to fix a garage door. Thanks for the information. I wonder how many accidents you have prevented with this video?
Awesome info. My wife didn't wait for the door to completely raise before backing the car out, catching the top of the tail gate to the bottom panel on the door and bent it in the middle about 1 inch out. So, I have to get that bottom panel off and try to straighten it out. This gives me a lot of info, thanks!
Thank you very much for the training. Just need adjust spring tension- door goes down boom and has one entire panel that is not retracted as it was before the springs were replaced.
goo morning Sr. i did all the donts. because my door was crocked and release all the spring and roll.. now i have to educate my self to start the winding again.. i need some help
I have an old extension spring door which no original parts are available so I have to map what I can get to what is on there to make sure it will work before taking apart.
You did not say where to buy these rods. Does local hardware store or Home Depot sell them? Can u use a black pipe 3/8 inch inside diameter to put in them holes ? Help !
That video came out just after my scar between my eyebrows. The only thing I wanted to do was replace the rubber at the bottom. I thought to myself it would be easier if I remove the 2 bottom rollers and open the door, that way the panel hangs down and it's easy to feed the rubber. Because the way the foundation knee wall goes over the side of the door, I didn't see the wire attached to it and just like you said in the video, after removing the last screw of the bottom roller plate, it flew up. Luckily it didn't damage the ceiling, my forehead stopped it. My glasses flew away. Lucky I didn't lose an eye. Your video would have helped me a lot. I had to deal with winding the spring again because all the tension was lost when the cable few up. I did watch a few vidows on that, I forget from who, but they did show the same safety precautions as you, like using a vise-grip to hold it, and more imnoprtantly use 2 proper bars to wind it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any in short notice, So I made 2 out of 5/8" rebar, and machined the ends down to 1/2" so that the fix and sit all the way in the holes on the spring bracket.
Wow great content man. I was about to try it. But when you mentioned the broken spring it hit home. I would of just ended my day real quick. Thanks buddy. I liked it and subscribed.
Vise Grips should be on either side of the end plate so when winding the torsion spring or springs don’t cause the torsion tube to make the winding bars pop out and hurt or kill someone ! Never put hands on the Red Set Screws when under pressure like you Did ! Should paint the torsion spring with a paint line so you can count the turns . Some MFG put dots white lines on them to help count the turns but not as good to see . I have been the Overhead Door Field for over 40 years and a oner for over that . Doing Commercial and Residential Installs also Emergency Service Calls .
Thank You! Watched just in time! I was going to loosen the set screws on the cables! Again thank you! My problem is I put on a new bottom seal and I have gaps about 18' in from both ends. I adjusted the limit but it bottoms out in the middle. Perhaps I need a larger seal? The new one is 2 3/4". Threw the old one away before I could measure it. (I didn't have gaps before other than where the old was torn) So get a wider seal or is there a way to take tension off of cable to lower it if that will even work? Thanks!
I just fixed my garage door. It's true about folks on here telling you how to fix them. One even said "Easy fix in two minutes". LOL Yeah right. It took more them 2 hours to get it right, the guy on the video left out a few things.
awesome information, thank you. Question, I have an old 10' x 10' old wooden garage door and I need to change the bottom 2x4 wood of my garage because its rotten. I have a 2 roller drum system on both sides with the tension spring in the middle of my garage door directly on top. The 2 brackets at the bottom of the garage door that I need to remove are obviously attached to the 2 pulleys. How do I release the tension off those cables so I can release the brackets without the cables letting go and unwinding? thanks in advance my friend.
Great video, spoke very clearly. Where can we buy the vise grip open mouth? You should put a link on you video and maybe make a few Pennie’s for each one sold.
I was told my garage door isn’t made anymore. It doesn’t go up on its own but when lifted manually it does stay up. It seems like it still gets power to the motor but won’t go up on its own. Was quoted 1500 for a garage door. What should I do?
The wound up springs are helping balance the weight of the door in order to open it, with or without the opener motor. Most size doors and opener motors can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. Although, it sounds to me like the gears may be bad in your opener motor. Its a DIY thing if you're capable. I got an off-duty garage door guy to replace an entire opener motor once cause I didn't want to mess with the chain adjustment. Its kinda precise since the opener motor has an auto reverse in case the door hits an obstruction. The whole job was fairly cheap after I purchased opener motor, which was about $100.
My friend and I have replaced all brackets and rollers with both cables released. We’re now ready to install the new cables but the door is wooden from the early 70’s super heavy! Is there a way outside getting 3-4 guys to help lift? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer!
Thanks for the tips. I repaired my garage doors maybe 3 times in 15 years. So I always forget the process and this video reminded me of the safe process and procedures. Last year, my new neighbor at the time had his Spring snap in half. He asked me to help weld it back together. I tried to tell him that it was really dangerous and should be replaced.. I'm not even a professional welder, but I'm sure that they wouldn't do it either. He was hard headed and did it anyway. It lasted 2 days and snapped dropping the door close to his feet. SMH. Anyway awesome video.
I'm over here telling my wife, "I wish we could just call the landlord" she jokingly says "call the bank" I'm like "suuure" hope you were able to figure out your issue!
Dope video. I think ima leave this for the pros. Seems easy, i work maintenance.... But one thing inhave learned over the years is somethings are best left to the pros.
Best display of parts and explanation of garage door repair and function that I have seen. I have watched a lot. My renter smashed her car into the bottom 2 panels, twice. I've been considering removing and pounding out dents and one support bracket. My door was made by Gadco and they are no longer in business. If replacing , I'd have to replace them all with a different manufacturer. Cost over $1400. For new complete it would be over $2.100.
My problem is, i have to step on the bottom of the garage door and apply maybe 40 lbs to get it to the floor and lock it there. And then when opening it, at about 5 feet up, it has spring tension holding it down. I dont know the history on it, like mismatched parts. But does it sound like the springs are to short? The door is 8' tall x 10' 2" wide. Any ideas?
Hollow tube? What other types are there? There is some useful info on grudge doors, but when can we see how to deal with garage doors? Apart from that, awesome dude.
I've put a wall mount door opener on mine . Lifts fine, on way down wire uncoils from drum. Do I lesson spring tension . I figure there could be more than 1 problem
You definitely need to take the tension off of the springs. Also need to measure from the top of the door to the center of the shaft, to make sure you get it back to the same height
Yes its too late…my neighbor assisted me with my mom’s garage door, and the bottom bracket was loosely and not fully attached. He told me to push the opener to open the door, and the bracket came loose, flew, and hit him square in the forehead. Bloody. I was so sorry but glad it wasn’t a serious injury, and I learned to have a healthy respect for working on the door.
Can I remove the horizontal track without removing the tension wire on a 2 car garage. The reason is I’m turning garage into room but don’t want to remove garage door I want to frame around it.
Many common single springs set ups give you 7k to 10k cycle life before breakage. A double spring should give you a minimum 15k cycles, up to 40k+ for high-cycle set ups. It's nice to have two springs as you mentioned because if one of them breaks, you will have one remaining to help you lift the door.
is there anything special about the torsion bar/shaft? or can I get black steel pipe from home depot and replace it with that? I'm trying to fix up the previous owners mess up's(multiple things) and notice after carefully unwinding the coils that the bar is really beat up(looks like someone previously adjusted the coils 155~ times at least:S almost square on one part), considering replacing it but not sure....
Do you have a set of tension/winding bars? Those are a must have, along with a good pair of vice grips. Using your tension bars, remove some of the tension on the spring until you see some slack in the cable on the side where the cable is still attached. You will need to leave your bar in the hole. There will still be tension on the bar, and that tension will hold the bar against the garage door. Move your ladder and put the loose cable back on the spool, then go back to your winding bars and SLOWLY (one hole at a time) allow the tension back into the spring. Make sure the cable is spooled on both sides.
10 years experience here... How are you determining your springs are loose on the torsion tube? If this was the case you would have to lift the full weight of the door in order to open it... Most people can't do that as it weighs hundreds of pounds...
@@kingbidenmypres I ended up replacing them! They were definitely very loose. Tried to tighten them and it didn’t work. Replaced with brand new ones and immediately opened my garage!
I used to work for a company and we did these from time to time. You CAN NOT stress enough how dangerous this job can be. Please be careful people. It's not a toy. If you're unsure. Hire a professional!!
What can be done if installer split the jambs? He did not pre-drill for those bolts just drilled them in. My son came over and saw all the splits. Went ballistic! What can be done?
@@parts4garagedoors278 What would you consider bad enough to require replacing all the jambs? Do splits close up in time, or just get worse? (Every jamb has at least one split, most have two, even three.)

awesome information, thank you.
Very informative
Thanks great information
Great video, buddy!
Thanks for the video, it helped me.
Thank you!
great information
Great video... Thanks old geezer
your awesome buddy thank you
Instruction starts at 2:00 minutes.
My man
Thanks
Good job thanks buddy 🎉
Great video, spoke very clearly. Where can we buy the vise grip open mouth? You should put a link on you video and maybe make a few Pennie’s for each one sold.
I was told my garage door isn’t made anymore. It doesn’t go up on its own but when lifted manually it does stay up. It seems like it still gets power to the motor but won’t go up on its own. Was quoted 1500 for a garage door. What should I do?
find someone who is licensed and insured for starters..... don't hire a person who says they're an expert... what area do you live?
The wound up springs are helping balance the weight of the door in order to open it, with or without the opener motor. Most size doors and opener motors can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. Although, it sounds to me like the gears may be bad in your opener motor. Its a DIY thing if you're capable. I got an off-duty garage door guy to replace an entire opener motor once cause I didn't want to mess with the chain adjustment. Its kinda precise since the opener motor has an auto reverse in case the door hits an obstruction. The whole job was fairly cheap after I purchased opener motor, which was about $100.
what can i do to fix the garage door is tracking to the left and rubbing on the left track?
That means your cables aren't adjusted equal. One side is tighter than the other, which causes one side to lift higher than the other.
Very Good tips😎
My friend and I have replaced all brackets and rollers with both cables released. We’re now ready to install the new cables but the door is wooden from the early 70’s super heavy! Is there a way outside getting 3-4 guys to help lift? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer!
Thank you so much for sharing info ..
Today I’m going to remove that bottom plate and replace my whole garage door😂 glad I watched this video first
Glad you watched it first!
Thanks for making this
No problem!
Awesome information. Thank you 😊
No problem.
Lol, I never thought I would need videos like this, that was until I bought a house and the garage door mysteriously stopped working...
Can you use a hand wench pulley or come along to release the tension rather than messing with the springs??
paying a professional is cheaper than going to the hospital or funeral costs!
Sometime the easiest way is the right way. But you're right- it's possible to be creative... I don't recommend though!
You are absolutely correct!
Any ideas?
If I just want to replace the panels on my garage door do I need to mess with the torsion spring? Thanks
sir. please can u tell mee 10' high garage door torsion spring size
I would need to know the width of the door, and/or the door weight to be able to help.
Can I adjust the drum without touching the spring?
Yes
How do keep from spring from heading you head . Wean wining up spring.
Hollow tube? What other types are there?
There is some useful info on grudge doors, but when can we see how to deal with garage doors?
Apart from that, awesome dude.
I think grunge doors are only found in Seattle.
Solid video. Do you ship parts just in your local area or out of state?
I've put a wall mount door opener on mine . Lifts fine, on way down wire uncoils from drum. Do I lesson spring tension . I figure there could be more than 1 problem
You may need to adjust the limits on your unit so the door doesn't lift too high.
I'm trying to replace the wood in the center where the spring is mounted, can I still do that or take same precautions?
You definitely need to take the tension off of the springs. Also need to measure from the top of the door to the center of the shaft, to make sure you get it back to the same height
😂 Thanks for the information.
I've seen people do things like this and don't recommend it. What if the door gets dented from outside, how would you change it out?
The cutest! ❤️
I unwind my torsion springs by hand 💪
LOL. I usually wind them 3 complete turns by hand when not filming.
Could you plz upload new door installation
Do a video if we should have 1 or 2 springs. Right now we have one and when it breaks we can't lift the Dorr even with 2 string mem
Please use only a torsion tube made for a garage door! It will save you head aches down the road.
Question one cable is disconnected and door is down, can I disconnect the other cable and then push door up to wind cables and reconnect?
Do you have a set of tension/winding bars? Those are a must have, along with a good pair of vice grips. Using your tension bars, remove some of the tension on the spring until you see some slack in the cable on the side where the cable is still attached. You will need to leave your bar in the hole. There will still be tension on the bar, and that tension will hold the bar against the garage door. Move your ladder and put the loose cable back on the spool, then go back to your winding bars and SLOWLY (one hole at a time) allow the tension back into the spring. Make sure the cable is spooled on both sides.
My cord broke and my torsion spring broke in half what will i have to do to fix it ????
Good, now we know. Thanks.
p.s. -- 2 minute intro? geeze.
Thanks. Understood!
My steel garage door weights 360 pounds, is 16x8 ft, the radius is 12”, which is the right set of torsion springs ( two of them left and right )?
Your minimum requirement is gonna be a pair of 262x2x35 at 10,000 cycles. If you want to upcycle, a pair of 273x2x42 will do about 18,000 cycles.
Just say that wire under tension will cut you in half
LOL. That's a bit dramatic.
How do you replace a broken spring ?????????
sir. please, tell me 10' high garage door with too spring how many quarter turns
4 qtr turns per ft of door, plus 2.
10ft door 40-42 turns
41 to 42 quarter turns, assuming your cable drums are a 12 inch circumference.
If my springs are loose on the rod does that mean they need to be replaced or just tightened?
10 years experience here... How are you determining your springs are loose on the torsion tube? If this was the case you would have to lift the full weight of the door in order to open it... Most people can't do that as it weighs hundreds of pounds...
@@kingbidenmypres I ended up replacing them! They were definitely very loose. Tried to tighten them and it didn’t work. Replaced with brand new ones and immediately opened my garage!
@@kingbidenmypres but they were looking really saggy on the bar and If I poked them they wobbled so that’s how I figured they were loose
They can sag as a result of the inside diameter of spring being larger than the torsion tube.
Awsome video dude
I removed the bottom bracket trying to install a new rail for the bottom seal... And now my door tweaked. How should I fix it? Plz help thanks
Sorry this happened! You could have been hurt! That repair is a different video. Take care.
Depends on how bad it is. Sorry that happened.
@@parts4garagedoors278 What would you consider bad enough to require replacing all the jambs? Do splits close up in time, or just get worse? (Every jamb has at least one split, most have two, even three.)
do i only have tp put the tension on the springs
The cables have to be in place first, then the spring(s) can be tensioned. We have a spring replacement video that would help you.
