I consider myself a lucky guy then .... I had that piece of wood panel blocking the way ...then the garage door hit it, having lose cable on one end and one of the wheels came off the rail on the other.....started off, I had an earful from my wife .... got the wheel put back to the rail after I removed the 3 nuts that hold the housing of the wheel then went backward steps to put the wheel in its place...... but the cable hanging lose was killing me...did not know what / how to do it ... the nagging and complaining still kept going on ....then I ran into this video ...5 minutes, got it fixed .... I have since been receiving lots of compliments from my wife....she seems to forgot I caused the problem in the first place :-) But I will take all the compliments coming my way, especially from her :-) ..... Bravo to Mr Garage Door Genius ....GENIUS INDEED.
Was having the hardest time, barely had any space in the garage, took your advice after struggling for almost an hour and was done in 15 minutes! Thank you!!!
Wrestled with the cables for an hour+ before finding your video, then was able to fix it it in a few minutes. Brilliant. Thank you so much. Money sent. 👍
Awesome installation instruction which was super easy to follow, with clear video!!! -- I live up in Wisconsin and the winter road salt that the car tires bring into the garage eventually got onto one of the cables and eventually rusted it through until it snapped at the bottom connecting ring of the cable. Additional lesson: In my case, since the cable snapped I had to go to the hardware store to purchase a new cable. I learned that garage door cables come in different lengths, which are commensurate to the height of your garage door. So, if you have to purchase a new cable, save yourself that second trip to the store by first measuring the height of your door - from floor to top of door. My door is 7ft tall. The hardware store sell them at 7 and 8 feet as a package of two for $6.99. Thanks so much Garage Door Genius of Austin, TX for your clear instruction!
Thanks a lot for the awesome comment brother! I'm glad this video turned out the way it did. I'm originally from Indiana so I know what ya mean about the snow salt and that nasty frozen slush. Haha I haven't seen to much of that since being here in Texas. Thanks for explaining the height and how it matters. Definitely super important to get the right length cables. Stay warm up there! Cheers
This video helped me fix my garage door after it closed on a windex bottle and got unwound. I was defeated and thought I had to call a repair person tomorrow. Saw this video and had it fixed in 25 minutes!
We had this very thing happen to us this morning. I just had lunch with my little brother and told him about it and he said, "yeah, I had that happen, I just called a repairman because I was not going to mess with that". I came home and searched youtube and your video was the first one I saw. Less than 10 minutes after watching this video my cable has been fixed ... by me! Thank you thank you thank you!
Thanks so much for the advice! You saved me a few hours and about $150. Really easy fix. Just be careful, and make sure the door is even before winding up the cable! Otherwise the hook won't reach.
I fixed my garage door today exactly as shown here. Took me about 15 minutes. I then called the Garage door repair people to cancel the service call for tomorrow morning. Thanks so much Last time this cable came off it cost me $240 and NO WARRANTY. they ripped me off. Thanks so much for this well done video. I followed your instructions exactly.
One of the bolts which hold one of the rails to the ceiling came off and the rail went sideways causing some of the wheels on both rails to come off and a couple of panels to dangle. One of the cables also spun off. I propped up the panels and used a cable puller to pull the rails back in alignment. I reinstalled the wheels and wondered if I had a major problem getting the cable back on the spring pulley or if the springs had lost tension. Thanks to your video it turned out to be the easiest part of the job, and the door works just fine with no expenses except for my time.
DUDE - I wish so many other DIY vids were of this quality/informative/step-by-step/etc. +1 sub, thank you for filling in the couple of gaps so clearly!

Thanks to you so much!!! My quiet garage rollers are now in the house!! Your garage looks like mine! Take care and thanks!
Totally agree with the comment by gotonkar. Today I pulled the emergency release on the garage door opener to make sure it was working and in the process it caused the cable to unwind...ugh! I came inside, watched your video, went out and tried it and it's working great now!!!! Thanks so much for your short, clear and concise method. It really is very easy to do. Thanks again!!
amazingly simple! thanks for saving me time and money! One additional tip for those trying this. DON'T try to fix this from the side because you have crap in the corner you don't want to move. I tried and spent 10 minutes wrestling with the wire. Moved said crap and tried from the top as explained in the video and it took a minute. Thanks again!!
Thanks for the video. You save me some $$$. It only took a couple minutes to fix the cable. I wonder who’s leaving “dislikes.” It must be garage repair companies😂. Anyway I’m headed to get some recreational beverages (beer) with the money I saved.
Thank you for this video! I had the basic concept, but I was fighting against the spring. That was a pain in the ass. So like every good American, when they are up shits creek, I went to TH-cam and found your video. Had it fixed in 10 minutes after that. One thing I kept doing wrong though, was I had my hand on the axel rod, and when it would turn, it would unwind the opposite side. I advise not to do that lol
Thanks for taking the time to post this! My garage door hit an object closing and a cable came unwound! After researching the internet your video was the best help! You saved me a $150 garage door guy visit!
Went to put my Grandma's garage door down & she had a flower pot sticking out of the garage slightly that the garage door sensor didn't sense, the garage door hit it as was almost down & just stopped/jammed... the left cable came off... got the neighbor bachelor to come help, struggled for a while trying different things, found ur video just when we wanted to quit & saved me a service call & bill from a garage door company tomorrow, TY, TY, TY!!! The only thing is her loop on the cable was much tighter than yours, I had to pry it off/on w/ a flathead, but got it done so thanks so much for the quick fix it video! With TH-cam, I can fix almost anything lol
My garage door cable I found was wound up opposite of how you show in this video. I noticed it rubs against the metal parts. I'm thinking I need to wind up the cord the way you have it on the drum.
If your tracking is Low Headroom then your cables will run on the front side of the drum. If your tracks look like the tracks in the video, then yes wind up from the back of the drum.
Thank you so much for this video. Just saved me at least $100 calling a repair man as a broom feel onto the track as the garage door was blowing and took the cable of the drum. Followed your instructions and had everything up and running in 10 minutes. Thanks so much!
you saved me at least a hundred sir.... the door hit a piece of wood panel, the wire got lose and one of the wheel came off the rail. I managed to put the wheel back in place (removing the 3 nuts and took the housing for the wheel our ...then went backward steps to put the wheel back to the rail) .... then I found out the door cables went lose on the other end .... called and made an appointment for someone garage door masters to come over tomorrow ... then I ran into your video .... took me 5 minutes....voila !!!! Thank you sir very much...God bless.
Does the door stay up in the header or does it float down? Could be a stretched cable or frayed. Making one longer than the other. Track spacing and level horizontals help. You could need a little bit of tension applied to the spring. I would inspect the cable. Make sure there isn't an obvious fray in one of the cables.
I watched 5 videos all saying various things with so many good tips but it was yours that finally got me to do it right after a couple of failed attempts and the door went down properly. FINALLY. I had blocked off the tension side in the rear, like another video said, locked the Vice grips on the no tension side but I kept screwing up somewhere. Idiot moment I kept having was finally fixed just by SEEING you push the garage up a nudge before locking the no tension side. Kept pressure on the spool and line as I wrapped and everything went just as easy as you showed. Thank you so much. The odds of me getting a good repairman on a Sunday at sunup were already slim, especially with this epidemic going on who knows who would actually answer. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Thank you for this video! Didn’t think it would be as straightforward as it actually is. Called around and garage repair guys trying to charge an arm and a leg for this. I said no way and turned to TH-cam and your video was it! Saved me money for sure.
I bet the folks that thumb downed this video are the garage door installers. Guess they didnt like that you costed them easy 100 bucks for a 5 minutes job. 😅
bud11dy When it's open the tension from the springs are not as powerful. So your able to manipulate the cable back on pretty easy. When it's closed you have to worry about the spring tension. Which generally you can just bar the spring's and reset the cables. Then reapply the tension.
This afternoon my wife landed the door with one side on something "twice" and made the door cable spin off. By your video I can fix it in 10 mins, before the night arrived. Thank you very much.
@@garagedoorgenius I thought it was hilarious. I had to play it back a few times to make sure I didnt have a different video window open or something. Lol Awesome video by the way!! I am totally going to fix my garage in the morning now. Thanks!!!
Many thanks for posting this great, concise, and clear video! I had my main garage door suddenly go out of alignment just as evening was starting and couldn't get it to close, even manually. After much head-scratching, I saw the loose cable but couldn't get it back on. Tried calling two garage door companies that advertised 24/7 emergency service and neither picked up! In desperation I Googled for info and found this video - it took an hour due to needing to move stuff and cars around to get access but after rewinding the cable like you explained - and relubing the rollers while I was at it for extra safety - my door is working fine again! You saved me a bundle paying for an emergency repair call!
EXCELLENT info and that was what I was going to do but, my neighbor talked me out of it and called a repair person. I decided to check with TH-cam and see if I could fix it myself. Viola, there you were and you confirmed what my plan of action was going to be. I’m on my way out to the garage to fix it before the repair person comes out. Hopefully, I can fix it before he comes. Thank you so much!
It didn’t work for me as, as i had extra cable left over and when I put it back on the metal stub, it came undone and sprang off of the spindle. In the meantime, the repairman called and stated he was on his way. I’ll watch to see what I had done wrong. Minimum charge coming out for first hour $150.00.
@@Egalitarian-bt7kz it's possible that one cable is stretched. Also, the cables may need to just be reset "start from scratch". You gave it a noble attempt my friend. 👊🏼
The repair person ended up loosening the pulley and winding up the cable. He gave me safety pointers as he stated they don’t come off by themselves, the door had to snag on something. I remember last week it snagged on the garbage can and the door worked all week until today, garbage day. The door went up but, not down and nothing was blocking the eye, it was the cable that had come off of the spindle. Had I been able to wind the cable correctly on the spindle, it would have worked 100% the way you showed. Again, a BIG thank you and your advice will save viewers money, as they can DIY their own garage door.

Suffice to say it was a BITCH, no corner access, had to do it from the front in the triangle created by a partially open door but it’s DONE! You tha man…

Hi, my wife just drove into the garage door, I got the same problem: cable off on both sides. Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I tried to fix it yesterday eveing without any success, will try it again with your manual. KR from Switzerland, Olivier
Amazing video. It is so nicely done that even a "not very technical" person like me was able to fix the garage door cable within minutes. Thank You so much! Greatly appreciate it.
Thank you G. Finally got it done! It became a trial and error and an accident. But all the reading and tips from you and your viewers helped. So, here it is: I learned that the door has to be completely level before repairing anything like cable rewinding etc. I found out that if you level the bad side, you must hold down the good side with a vice grip or it's going to move on you and you are at square one back again (even if it moves slightly, it makes a difference on those stubborn gaps at bottom corners). I brought my door from death, it crashed down at (200 lbs X force X velocity). The top of the door wedged itself right under the top of the door seal and (that was hell to release it without bending or breaking parts) and fortunately no one was hurt. I am really surprised that there was minimum damage done to the door after that big crash. One reason why i did my own work, I got tired of begging for someone to come out whenever they felt like it. I'm Not a door man after this either; I'll stick to coaching HS soccer, it's safer and more exciting. Careful, do not let go of the safety switch (the red cord) when THE DOOR IS UP and getting ready to work. If you have to do any serious work (i.e. springs, cables etc) secure door first and start (i learned it the hard way and fortunately it wasn't my time). Take care and good luck.
I live in Las Vegas, I almost gave up on the garage door w/ the spring coming off. Looked exactly the same like your garage spring. I didn’t have or couldn’t find some vice grips. So I used a bucket and a 2” 6” and a bucket and braced the garage door. Unhooked the cable and wound it on the wheel and works perfect. Thank you very much for your video.
My wife didn't believe me when I said I can learn anything from youtube haha. Thanks man. Huge headache gone. The windstorm got us good the other night garage door was all jacked up, video saved the day.
Great instructional video, I was leaving a house I own, but currently not living in. I was doing maintenance and as I was as about to leave I pressed button to shut garage door and cable came off track. I live 50 miles away, so I called around garage door guys and was quoted over $300 to fix it after sending pictures. It was the weekend so I thought I’d just have to pony up the cash, but was placed on hold by garage door guy. I thought hey what do I have to lose and followed this video. Luckily I could get cable off without needing vice grips, so it literally took me maybe 3-5 minutes to fix garage door.
Thanks!

BADASS brother! Nice job.
Lmao @ the wifey!!
Ha!
I hear the same things all the time from my wife, too.
They must be sisters. 😄

@@angelromero3536 heck yeah! Saving money is the name of the game. 👍🏼
Much appreciated mate, 4 years since you uploaded this video and still relevant. Thank you.
🙏

Thank you SO much!!! I’m a single mom, with five kiddos. This video saved me money. I was able to fix it with the help of my 12 year old son.
VERY HELPFUL!! I was able to fix mine in less than 5 minutes after watching this video.
Thanks so much for the advice! You saved me a few hours and about $150. Really easy fix. Just be careful, and make sure the door is even before winding up the cable! Otherwise the hook won't reach.

Ya I can't even pull mine up manually and have to jack up one side and still can't get the garage door up. Should have left it up grrr
I couldn’t figure out how to get the cable back on there when I took it completely off this video was definitely helpful! 🙌🏻

Saving money is the name of the game! Nice job broh fixing the issue. 👊🏼
Thanks to your video it turned out to be the easiest part of the job, and the door works just fine with no expenses except for my time.

amazingly simple! thanks for saving me time and money! One additional tip for those trying this. DON'T try to fix this from the side because you have crap in the corner you don't want to move. I tried and spent 10 minutes wrestling with the wire. Moved said crap and tried from the top as explained in the video and it took a minute. Thanks again!!

Thanks man, this was exactly what I needed and I thought I was going to have to to something much more complicated or get a professional to fox it! 👍🏼
Glad to help!
Thank you so much for this video. Just saved me at least $100 calling a repair man as a broom feel onto the track as the garage door was blowing and took the cable of the drum. Followed your instructions and had everything up and running in 10 minutes. Thanks so much!
You're very welcome 😊!
you saved me at least a hundred sir.... the door hit a piece of wood panel, the wire got lose and one of the wheel came off the rail.
That's awesome!
Your welcome.
My right cable keeps coming off after a few days, Any pointers on what the cause can be? Thanks.
Your video saved my ass. Cheers from Colorado!

When it's open the tension from the springs are not as powerful. So your able to manipulate the cable back on pretty easy.
When it's closed you have to worry about the spring tension. Which generally you can just bar the spring's and reset the cables. Then reapply the tension.
the thumbs down came from garage door masters ...via this video they've lost thousands and keep losing.
I just like helping people. Some folks this repair would be more than they could handle. But for most, easy fix! Save money!!

Thanks for the feedback! Let me know how it goes. I love helping people save money. 🙏

I appreciate your awesome feedback! 👍🏼
Thank you G. Finally got it done! It became a trial and error and an accident. But all the reading and tips from you and your viewers helped.
So, here it is:
I learned that the door has to be completely level before repairing anything like cable rewinding etc.
Thank you. I tried fixing this issue for an hour before I found your video. After watching, it took me 10 mins to fix. Hell yeah!!! Great video.
