    job completed while I listened to NFL division games on radio. I went slow and careful and kept getting happier and happier. It was about 31 deg out when I was doing this. I was running a small electric oil radiator on hottest setting before starting and as I completed job I could feel the heat holding better. I’m very interested in this mostly for sun here in Louisiana. Gets HOT. If I can keep my garage cooled off 7-10 degrees cooler I’ll call it a big success. My garage door is 18’ x 8’ and that’s a LOT of surface area for heat and cold radiation. That’s a project I’m happy to complete. My receipt for the job was about $110 do 5 insulation panels and I had a bunch of AC tape on hand so only had to buy one roll too. Anyway my job didn’t come out near as “pretty” as yours but it will be good and functional! PS - I shoulda bought that razor knife. I used a long carpet knife that cut 3/4 way through and my stuff snapped good like dry wall but left a bit jagged edge. That’s alright though doesn’t affect functionality! Cheers and thanks again. Job done thanks to your pushing me with your own video!

      @DeanFurnitureArtist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Your comment made my day! I'm stoked to hear that you rocked the insulation. Pretty cool feeling a difference almost immediately isn't it!?!
      The Louisiana heat is no joke! A cooler garage is a game-changer summer time. Mine used to get so hot in the summer my camera and power tools would shut off some even started smoking. (Really, watch the poker table build video lol)
      Pulling off the whole thing for around $110 on a 16x8 door is worth every penny!! Who needs 'pretty' when you've got functionality. Now you see why I said the snap blade knife was very much worth the $5. 😜But hey the edges are hidden in the door channel so no one will ever know.
      Thanks for sharing your experience. Comments like this make it worth the time making these videos knowing they are useful or helpful.

    Looks good, Dean. We live in Australia, so our problem is keeping the heat out in Summer. We insulated our garage door when we built our house 5 years ago and the builder thought we were crazy but our garage stays reasonably cool. In comparison, our son's garage, which is not insulated is like an oven.

    • @DeanFurnitureArtist

      Oh I bet! We get well over 100 here in summer and that metal door becomes an oven! Smart thinking!!

      We did too. In fact we also did the carport… yep, open on 2 sides, fence along the other. The neighbour, who is an engineer, said we were wasting our money. Sometime after he asked to come in to test the difference and was surprised. He noticed we always sat under the carport rather than our back veranda. After storm damage to his back veranda, he rebuilt the roof with colorbond and insulation , the same exact we used.

      I could easily see an argument being made metal side out is better but the metal film is reflective on the foam side as well so I would assume it does the same thing. Just like spraying radiant barrier on the underside of a roof. But again that is just my thought process doesn’t mean it’s correct.

    I am a 69 yr. old retired teacher. I moved into a smaller home in Houston with horrible insulation. My garage was so hot that the food in my pantry melted! I have used these insulation sheets on the garage walls. Big difference. I decided to follow your excellent instructions for insulating the garage door. Mine didn’t look as nice as yours, but it did work nicely. The cost has gone up, of course, so the cost was around $150. Thank you!

    I did that to my garage way back in 2015; costed me less than $100. I bought 3 whole sheets and I cut them to size to fit on the garage door. I also did all our windows throughout our house. My home stays pretty cool and we rarely use the air conditioning except when it's really, really hot. It really works!

    I used the same foam board... but i added a layer of fiberglass wallboard on top and used spray adhesive on the back of both to hold everything... looks way more professional.

    • @DeanFurnitureArtist
      @DeanFurnitureArtist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I bet that does look clean. I would worry about the weight though. 1/8 4x8 Sheet of fiberglass wall board is 20lbs. 1" Foam board is 2lbs for a 4x8 sheet. Foam board on a 16x7 door is under 8lbs of added weight. Not even noticeable on the spring or lift motor.
      Then adding fiberglass wall board in just a 1/8" is adding almost 80lbs more which will be asking a lot of the factory spring. Did you make changes to the spring for the added weight?

      Good point about the reflective side. In hot environments like AZ, FL, TX, it migh be better to put the reflective side against thhe metal door to reflect that heat. Putting on the inside isn't going to reflect the coldth as much.

    used 4 sheets of Corning NGX for max insulation. came out great but added 25 pounds to the 7’ by 16’ door which put it out of the Genie opener specs! So had to have both spring replaced which cost $500. Total Project cost was $650!
    Then, I Also had to insulate the 4’ of wall above the garage door which required two more sheets and added $75 which pushed the cost just over $725!

    • @DeanFurnitureArtist
      @DeanFurnitureArtist  หลายเดือนก่อน

      😮 Yeah, those are pretty heavy! The ones I used are 2 pounds each, so the total added weight is under 8 pounds, which hasn't impacted the springs in either of my homes. Even with you spending $725 it's still less than half the cost of buying an insulated door, not to mention installation cost on top of that. I would say it’s still a win-win!

      You should have garage door weather stripping on the out side of the door. I prefer the weather stripping that is built into the trim piece. Those are much easier to install and seem to block more air out. If you don’t have them or need to replace your old ones it’s only like a 20 minute job and around $30 in weather stripping.

      If the weight of the insulation holds down your door, you can always put a turn or two on your counterweight springs. Not a problem, but you have to be very careful. It's easy to get hurt working with the springs. If you're not experienced in this area, you could always have a garage door company adjust it. The springs tend to weaken a bit over time, so adjusting them every couple years is a good idea.

    If you didn't have foil covered foam you could buy a bulk box of butter foil and can of spray adhesive. You can even cut poly strips to bridge the panel edges to add r-1 over those and seal leakage. Run the door up and down once before the glue sets.

      Yes, I can fully attest to the incredible effectiveness of my variable voltage / temperature electric HEATED WIRE SAW that offers several configurations for the thin wire filament which eases certain use scenarios such as cleanly zipping through fluffy polyester batting like that used to stuff pillows & home furnishings, as well as rapidly slicing both straight lines and complex curves in lightweight hobby foam core in addition to rigid closed cell polyurethane foam insulation board or Styrofoam materials of nearly any type. The caveat with regard to this specific project AND THIS EXACT PRODUCT used in your demo is that this electrically conductive aluminum foil "kraft facing" that provides the radiant barrier functionality CANNOT BE CUT WITH THIS HOT WIRE KNIFE since it operates by directing variable voltage and current through the tensioned wire filament that spans the gap between the attachment points of the hot knife handle, each having opposing polarity / different electrical potentials which make it possible to heat up the wire filament without burning or melting it, thereby giving this tool its unique capability as an extremely clean cutting knife that doesn't SAW through these man made materials, but rather melt-slices--as the proverbial hot knife through butter. It works great on non-electrically-conductive, unfaced foam insulation boards, so a separate radiant barrier could be added overtop or underneath the foam board, such as the rolls of dual mylar faced bubble wrap also found at local home improvement centers.
      Your tutorial is first rate, sir!!

      @DeanFurnitureArtist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So the metal film is a no go for a hot wire tool. Good info! Thanks.

    • @USNBRENDON
      @USNBRENDON 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @DeanFurnitureArtist No prob. I will say that when working with the foam core sandwiched between two foil faces (regardless of whether both are bare, shiny aluminum or one has a logo / painted surface or not) I have found NOTHING works better for me than a disposable snap-off / segmented retractable blade utility knife.....you want to extend it to a length sufficient to either make the cut in one pass or perhaps, just 1/8 - 1/4 inch less than the full depth and come back for a second, clean & easy finishing pass; which can be very helpful on double faced foam insulation board that is over 3/4 inch thick. It is a matter of personal preference I suppose.
      Please DO USE A FRESH SHARP BLADE and REPLACE IT OR SNAP-OFF DULL SEGMENTS AS SOON AS THE CUTS BEGIN TO FEEL UNSAFE, JERKY or cut edges of foam appears raggedy & starts flaking off excessive foam particles DUE TO SIGNIFICANT FRICTION OR DRAG THAT PREVENTS A SMOOTH SLICING MOTION..
      If you happen to be using 1" or thicker faced foam insulation board or you are going to be doubling up & are really determined to cut two pieces at once.....DO NOT OPT FOR THE THINNER / SMALLER WIDTH UTILITY BLADES.
      YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD PURCHASE THE MORE SUBSTANTIAL & MUCH WIDER BLADE VERSION, WHICH IS GENERALLY LONGER AS WELL SO THAT'S A BONUS.....this is in part because your cuts will "feel" more stable & confidence-inducing, but primarily because the thinner narrow snap-off utility knife blades can snap off unexpectedly if too much torsional, twisting or lateral force gets applied while the blade is under pressure during a cut on material prone to sudden binding or friction related drag. The wider blades are much less likely to snap off under load and imho, the wider blade tends to help with creating straighter linear cuts, which is what you want on a project like this most of the time.
      *** If you were needing to cut curves for some reason, then going slower and more methodically with the narrower utility blade will produce better results than the wider, chunkier style knife.

  • @Ron_Masterjohn

    Great job and even looks nice. Now what about the hot summer time will these panel work just as good with the shinny Mylar facing inside the garage instead of facing the garage door reflecting the heat out? I built heated cat condos out of the same insulation board with the Mylar facing the inside so it reflects the heat back at the cats. Also put a large Farm Innovators pet heating pad down first the a pet crate bed on top on that. The condo is 2 ft x 4 ft and 2 ft tall and siliconed the insulation board together and put a couple braces inside. Closed off one end then made the other end to where I can pull it out to clean and maintain the condo and cut a door into that end piece so they can get in and out. Last thing is I made a heater out of a brand new 1 gallon paint can and installed a light bulb fixture in it and installed a 100 watt regular light bulb and place it inside the condo back about 6 inches from the removable end with the cut out for them to get in and out. It works so good with the paint can heater and the pet heating pad that it stays no matter how cold it gets at about 72 degrees. Kitties can come inside if the want but have no problem sleeping in their heated condo when it’s even 16 degrees out like it will be in the middle of the night today. Another thing you won’t notice a big jump in your electrical bill with using 100 watt light bulb and the heated pet pad like you would a heater and is safe to. So I’ll be doing my new roll up garage doors too. Great to know I need A/C tape too.

      Good info. I could see an agreement being made that the metal side should face the door. The metal film is reflective on the side facing the foam as well so I would assume it would do the same thing. Like spraying radiant barrier on the under side of a roof.
      But again just my thought process doesn’t mean it’s correct.

    This is exactly what I need. Did you have to do anything to compensate for the added weight? I've been told to be wary of maybe needing to get the spring adjusted when adding weight to the garage door. Also what a bout sound? My first thought to insulate my garage door was actually to help keep sound from getting out so I'm wondering if you have experience with this.

    • @DeanFurnitureArtist
      @DeanFurnitureArtist  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t know about sound getting out but it does make the door much quieter closing. I would assume keeps sound in better.
      These 4x8 panels are only 2lbs each so normal double door under 8lbs of added weight. I have had no issues here or in my last home. I do know some of the garage door panels they sell can add over 20 pounds of weight and I could see that causing premature wear.

  • @railgap
    @railgap 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mine came insulated with nice painted 20ga. inside liners covering the foam. Doors are heavy 16ga outside panels, channels, etc. Surprisingly thick tracks. Excellent weather seal trim added to door frame by the garage door company. I am not well-off financially; the secret was to have burglars screw up one door and a neighbor across the alley back into the other in quick succession. See? This One Simple Trick... Insurance paid for all, so I got the best I could afford using the bank payment...
    With all of that said, I still had to adjust the tracks so that the closed doors sealed completely against the weatherseal trim. The college kids who installed the stuff were challenged by a very tight install. Anyway, if any cold (or hot if you run ac in the summer) air leaks around the door, it won't matter how well insulated the door panels are.
    Further, make sure the door panels fit against each other tightly. If you can feel any cold air leaking through those, some thing foam rubber weatherstripping will fix.

So i have to adhere it to the door slots somehow. Any idea what i can use? I was thinking some kind of liquid nails and use the caulk gun? What do you suggest? They have some really awesome double-sided tapes now. 3M Makes one that is used on all your car moldings and emblems but that would be $$ for that large of a space. I am sure you could find a better option tape. They are even using double-sided tape type products for backsplash tile.
      I bet your door is already an insulated garage door. Several people have sent me photos, and they all had the same Wayne Dalton brand door. They make one R6 value which kind of sinks in on the back and R18 which is completely flat. Here is a link to Lowe's with a 360 image. See if the back of your door looks like this one. www.lowes.com/pd/Wayne-Dalton-Wayne-Dalton-Classic-Steel-Model-9100-16-ft-x-7-ft-White-Double-Garage-Door/5001751473

      In hot climates I would recommend that. I honestly think it works well either direction. They put radiant barrier in attics and it works well even with shingles, tar paper and plywood above it. So foam above it should be fine but recommend out for hot climates.
