Excellent tutorial. I like your clear explanations of what you were doing and what you were trying to achieve. This video was of great help to me. Thanks, Mike in Germany
As a dealer repair tech, retired now but not a monthly painter. I’ve painted 5 cars of our own, buy I have learn more about taping off a vehicle, the paper/tape tool in one video, that makes sense, than all the others combined. That help me a lot. Vintage vehicles with rubber channels that a new or recent & pliable, can be carefully lifted on the edge and a rope that fits, can be pushed under it. This allows for cleaning, sanding and taped off to paint. This is a tip I have used myself. This allows paint under the edge without a paint line. Great clear explanation, great lighting and easy to understand. Thank you. P.S. Delorean used Mustang front brakes, suspension with a Volvo V6 engine. I work on 3. At 6’3”, you can’t see the end of the hood pulling into the stall.
Excellent work.... I have been watching your videos for some time.... I like your professionalism... Attention to detail..... I just did a frame off on my 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu 4 door wagon to preserve the car..did frame... And underbody and Engine. Transmission...... Your videos kept me going...
Inspiring. This gives me hope that it CAN be done. I've got a lot of surface area to go before I get to epoxy, but I'm following the same path with my Wagoneer. Nice work.
Man I love your series. So helpful as I look forward to things I will need to be doing to my '67. I'm barely at the point of getting rid of rust on frame and body. So much to do. Keep up the great videos!
Hello sir, so I’m the guy with the ‘70 mach1. Yesterday I managed to install the passenger torque box. I watched one of your videos on this where you say, if you’re going to tackle this job, you must be devoted. I understand why now. On to the driver’s side now. Happy with CJ P parts for this job.
I don’t use tape no more. After doing silver metallic it’s actually black paint with silver crystals and the black floats to the top so I use a soup spoon after mixing and each Scoop comes from the bottom
Hello there. I have a 68! Yes, I have been looking forward to this too. I am wanting to eliminate the curve at the bottom of the sail panels and extend it about 2in. past the back of the trunk lid in a linear means, and not sweeping or curving at the bottom. Original floors, built and delivered in Dearborn, spent most time in AZ.
Compared to replacing the roof skin, how long would you project your repair on the roof would last? I have a similar issue with a project of my own. Thank you for your time.
they also make foam blocks and that helps in that area between the roof and the quarterpanel basically the same shape as that durablock you used but the foam makes it form better and would not create low spots like the hand usually does, handblocking could be ok sometimes if you keep the fingers together like you said but i try to keep it at a minimum
I've got the same issue on my 68'. Vinyl top car with pitting. I'll have to do the same thing. What type of filler are you using? Polyester body filler?
Once again very insightful video and well done. Why don’t you epoxy coat the inside of the car too? I am about to media blast my 65 coupe and then plan on epoxy coating the exterior and interior. Any thoughts about that? Thank you
I’m not a young buck lol. So, after a good day in my shop I need a few days to recup, my body does. I’m 58. Heck that’s not old. But I spent my working life as a automotive tech. So the articulation in my body has been compromised just like my project that I’m working on.
Still, I won’t stop until she’s done. I bought her out of Minnesota. From the original owner who he bought her after returning from a campaign in Vietnam in 70. She has Minnesota rust. Normal but not detrimental. Wears original paint and sheet metal 30k on odo. Still factory paint on valve springs. Starts on a quarter turn, and she wears her original paint. How can I not respect that.
Barry, very nice video and thanks for all the detailed explanation that you do! I know some of the people that do this all the time probably skip through, not me! I need all the info you provide! After you painted the epoxy primer, I noticed the areas with the filler did not seem to cover very well. I could still see all the filler areas. Is this normal with epoxy primer? I have 2 projects that I am working on! My 94Jeep YJ and 78 Camaro. The Jeep is almost done and if you would like I can post all that I have done with it! The Camaro is still the way I purchased it.
yup.. had to go back and watch again.. apparently i walked away with the video still playing.. i remembered the sanding and prep, then came back to some metal playing showing off the black sprayed on.. never saw the gray in the video and didn't scroll through the rest of the pics on instagram, so assumed the black was ppg. looks awesome. what's your initial thoughts on that epoxy? have you done any durability tests with it yet? I'm tempted to give it a try when i need more epoxy..
It lays out nice. I let dry 4 days and I have sprayed the high build. I will let that dry a couple of weeks. (at least) We'll see if there's any issues.
My internet was down for the past 6 days now I am catching up. Wouldn't it be worth just skimming the entire roof and going from there? Just a very light coat?
Do I have to take my 69 mustang down to bare metal? Or can I prep it and spray over the existing? What about area that have to have metal repair be fore paint. Thank u
Love your work. What was the pressure at the gun. Do you have a preference on what brand of high build that you use. What brand and type of seam sealer will you use? Keep up the good work. I have new 1959 fleetside bed sides, not sure what type of seam sealer to use on spot welded seam down the side.
I think the pressure was around 30 psi. The gun says 28 max. I will use PPG shopline 2k high build. I use evercoat brushable seam sealer. Links on my Amazon page in the description.
I always heard that the one and only thing you can do to treat pit rust is sand blasting. It's the only method that really takes away the deeper spots. Is that a fact or are there other methods that will do the same?
That works well. Blasting does a great job because of the pressure. There are other methods depending on the severity. Electrolysis works well too if the parts can be immersed. Bit more complicated though.
Seems weird that revenues would be down, since people can't really go out, I figured they'd be watching more TH-cam. I do, at least. How do you like the Summit stuff? I'm looking at budget paint stuff for my S10 project.
With people out of work, advertisers don't have reason to spend money on ads. People need to have money to spend money. At least that's how I see it. The Summit epoxy seems to work fine. It seems a bit thick until you add the hardener to thin it.
@@JoDaddysGarage I'm surprised. I'm coming out ahead by not working. Between not grabbing fast food twice a day (on the way to and while at work), and not needing 2.5 tanks of gas a week, I have a lot of free time and money. I've been buying parts for my truck. lol
@@JoDaddysGarage thank you I had pits on my roof and after I cleaned all the rust out I put epoxy down and was going to spray some slick sand high build primer to fill in all the pits.

Hey Barry, I’m about to do the borgeson power steering conversion on my 69 coupe. I know you did the same conversion on the 67, any advice? There’s not too much info on this conversion for the 69. I know I have the collapsible steering shaft, but do you think I’ll have to trim anything up? Thank you

I guess in indefinitely. This car won’t see rain or bad weather.

I'd say do the high build primer since it's all taped off already, kill 2 birds with one stone. Then all you have to do is sand sand sand !
Beautiful work!!

Yes, it takes experience and finesse to use your hands that way.
Nice work!
Back when I was going to school for aircraft maintenance they always said no to use a pencil because it causes corrosion to the metal
