With every video I become more and more confident in being able to tackle our 68 Mustang project ourselves. Thank you very much for your detailed videos!
Heh, bought my first compressor from Sears back in 1978. Still using it! Still has the original belt!! I did have an issues with some valve failure several years back but no big deal. It's just a 2 hp, 20 gal, 220V, barely enough to paint a car back in the days with a siphon gun. To run my HTE gun now I still use it but I augment it with my new one ... strangely enough, identical to the Kobalt you have!!! (Got a screaming deal on it as I guess they discontinued them.) That's a nice unit, seems well built (good warranty), actual 2 stage and makes an honest 175 psi, all on 120V ... and it's damn quiet too! Only drawback is that being 2 stage it doesn't offer a lot of delivery in CFM. On its own I don't think it'd run an HVLP gun for long, but the "old reliable" Sears working with it works out fine.
Great Job Barry , hopefully next year I an start doing something with mine . Thank you for making this videos . I'm Learning alot from you , God bless you.
they probably had overspray land on the primer and made it grainy.......BTW I got one of those compressor heads from harbor freight (the 3hp one) I have a 5hp compressor it works perfect. about the same CFM as before. great for temp repair. Yea My compressor tank is like a 1986 still going.
I second the motion on the second tank! What? Does that make sense? Yes, twice the volume at contestant pressure or close to it. My son was doing body work and painting his Monte Carlo. I was after him to check to pumps oil, repeatedly. It froze! I even have a tag w/date of service. Many have found older tube type a/c condenser off an R12 GM truck. Compression fitting allow for easy plumbing. Adding a cooling fan increases its efficiency in removing condensed humidity from the air, to make the tank like three times longer. A 12 volt DC fan can be added using a converter, wired in the on side of the “On” side of the pressure switch. You comment about someone said their epoxy was grainy. Some add up to 10% acrylic reducer that allows it to flow out and lay down flatter with “Eastwood” or “Shop Line” epoxy, made by PPG. Nice work, already subscribed but hit like! Epoxy is a step many deem not needed. I do...and you do as well. It is serious protection.
@@JoDaddysGarage Sorry, I misspoke, I meant to say a good quality urethane Reducer of the correct temperature but that makes it flow out smoother. Air pressure at the gun, tip size, so much effects the texture of the Shop Line epoxy sealer/primer product. Have a good one.
I use epoxy primer for certain jobs. However I have had lifting issues repairing paint when something that was epoxy primed. I never have these issues with any other thing I've painted. I'm not bashing epoxy it's just a thought. I've done bodywork since 89.
Keep the tank. The old ones are built way better and last longer then a new ones. My 5 year old compressor tank failed (cracked at welds) and my old tank (30 years old)still holding strong.
Oh man 😲 and always inconvenient at the wrong times. But I can see an Ingersoll Rand T30 7.5hp in your future. It's a great compressor, good luck ! Happy Thanksgiving 🍗
Nice video, great job of explaining the process you go through. I have always used epoxy as the foundation for my bodywork and paint jobs but I usually get one of PPGs epoxies not the off brand stuff. it would be nice if Summit would tell you who makes it for them to relabel.
Seemed like 1 wipe was not enough on that hood. How many times did you clean it beefore it was ready for epoxy? No glass cleaner or rubbing alchol? Getting ready for epoxy myseld and was wondering if w&g was all that is needed. All those parts with a 1.8 and 32oz wow.
Did you thin your epoxy with acetone? That sure laid down nice. I've used the Eastwood brand and it does get grainy after it dries. I may have to switch to the Summit brand.
Hi Barry , Not sure if you will see this or answer . Been watching your great videos and am in the process of doing my project car . I've been looking for a water seperator/dryer in line filter but there are so many . From high $$$ to Low $$$ . Could you tell me what you use and model number ? If its good enough for you and looks great when you spray then I want the same . Thanks and keep up the great videos .
I didn't get much overspray. Just have some good ventilation. It will help to throw some plastic over things. They sell a plastic roll at paint supply places. It attracts paint to it.
WOW you spray really far away from the panel. Everyone I know sprays really close with a wider fan. It did seem to work though. I spray that far away when I am doing a drop or control coat with metallics on silver. On paint or clear if I sprayed that far away it would come out dry. epoxy primer is pretty forgiving and easy to spray.
Love your videos man! Been watching a long time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Working on my hood now over on my HEAVY PEDAL GARAGE channel! Second gen firebird. Formula Hood.
I don't really understand epoxy primer. I have a small area that has metal showing. If I spray epoxy primer, can I immediately spray primer on top of it or do I need to sand the epoxy primer?
Thanks Barry. I like these ‘doing’ vids the best. Is it normal when you epoxy over filler to see patchy dry looking bits where the filler is or does that sound like I’m not spraying it wet enough?
I used a variety of things. Carefully used the warrior discs on my 4.5 inch grinder. Some 2" sanding discs, and my DA sander with 80 grit. Did some sanding by hand as well.
Hi Barry. You mentioned your filtration system to keep the compressed air dry and contaminate free. What system are you using to achieve this? I need something that does a better job of keeping moisture out of my air line. Thanks BTW. Really enjoyed the video. Good to see Jade getting some love.
Real ecoat is a epoxy based.. oem panels with ecoat is not a good idea to remove it. If thinner softens the coating its not real ecoat and it is to be removed. Oem ecoat is the best coating for paints, just scuff and hit it with primer of you favor.
Harbor freight V twin compressor does a good job , many youtube 's on it. just need to match pulleys to run the desired compressor RPM.
I think I could watch someone spray paint and primer all day. Very informative. Thanks Barry!
An expert guy that primer just went on smooth. Thanks!
With every video I become more and more confident in being able to tackle our 68 Mustang project ourselves. Thank you very much for your detailed videos!
You can still use the tank, hook it up to the new compressor and you will have twice the volume of air to work with
I like the tip of using masking tape on the can lip. I'm going to use that. Thanks.
Brilliant idea using the tape to save on waste (both on time cleaning up and product) like you did. I'm 65 and still learning new tricks.

I am jealous of the new hood. Mine is going to take a lot of work to get back to this point. Great job Barry, looks fantastic.

You are so lucky that did not catch fire! Wow! You should probably have a heat detector in the garage tied into your smoke detectors in the house.

11:00 holding the gun upside down and purging all of the air out of the cup now allows you to spray upside down for when you get in those tight spots.
Sorry to hear about your air compressor, but you can plumb that tank into your system to give it more volume.

I use glass cleaner and degreaser. Wiped at least twice.
Nice work 👍👍
Keep us updated on the compressor. I have one I bought in 79, still works but there will come a day....
Great video. What type of ventilation do you have as room didn't appear cloudy at all while you were spraying.
I just have a box fan in a window. Actually 2 of them, but I only had one running in this video.
You say you wipe down with windex. Is that just for dust removal? Great Video Thanks
Yes. It helps clean things up.
Did you thin your epoxy with acetone? That sure laid down nice. I've used the Eastwood brand and it does get grainy after it dries. I may have to switch to the Summit brand.
No thinning at all. Used it just as mixed.

The system I use is from our old body shop. I think I show it in a video I called paint booth makeover. Not sure if they still make them.
Do you have a video on the tools you use to strip paint? Seems like you stripped that hood fairly quickly. Thanks!
Look in my tools playlist
I don't have a spray booth. How much of overspray gets onto everything? Could I just do this in my garage? Should I tarp up my tool box? Thanks Barry

I personally spot prime my body work first to give it a more uniform finish. The body work usually sucks in the primers

Sounds like a rotary screw compressor is in the future Barry but big money 💰
I don't really understand epoxy primer. I have a small area that has metal showing. If I spray epoxy primer, can I immediately spray primer on top of it or do I need to sand the epoxy primer?
Epoxy is meant to go to bare metal. There is usually a 4 day window to add other primers. Check your product for information on that.
Solid professional quality !
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours !
Great work on all the video’s considering these uncertain times !!
Thanks Barry. I like these ‘doing’ vids the best. Is it normal when you epoxy over filler to see patchy dry looking bits where the filler is or does that sound like I’m not spraying it wet enough?
It's normal for filler to make it look different.
What is the induction time on the primer or you just Quickly mix it and shoot it
Follow the instructions on the can.
ok barry im doing the hood now it has old bedline undercoat un it im using wire brush on da rimmer now its a mess
Hi, don't want to be a smart ass but I note that you do not strain your paints into the gun ??? is there a reason. Great vids and keep them coming.
No reason to. The PPS system has a built in strainer in the cup.
It turns grainy at a high temperature any primer if your shooting over 80 degrees
I have new panels in e coat should I sand them an put them epoxy?
Great work! I love watching these videos and learning from you.
What do you use to strip the paint from the pot metal parts? Headlight extensions etc.
I used a variety of things. Carefully used the warrior discs on my 4.5 inch grinder. Some 2" sanding discs, and my DA sander with 80 grit. Did some sanding by hand as well.
I have heard people complain about the grainy feel i think they are laying it on to heavy
Quincy...60 gal the way to go.15.3 cfm
Harbor freight has pumps!

BTW. Really enjoyed the video. Good to see Jade getting some love.
I salvaged a unit we had at the body shop. I don't know the brand for sure. th-cam.com/video/DUHg8d0lhhw/w-d-xo.html
Haciendo el trabajo bien saludos desde CDMX
Gracias mi amigo.
Nice work Barry (as usual). Out of curiosity do you also spray or treat the inside of the fenders and the other parts to protect them? Thanks!
I do. Also use undercoating.
@@JoDaddysGarage Ah - thanks! Great info - will put it to good use.
Excellent 👍
Epoxy looks good to me, sorry about your compressor, but maybe it's time
Hi. What pressure do you spray at?
Usually around 20-30 at the inlet
hi barry looking good
What's happened to the Brooklyn pony?
On hold.
So epoxy then filler? Or filler then epoxy? Which is right?
I spray epoxy then high build primer. You can spray a sealer on after that.
Ideally, epoxy to bare metal then filler.
@@JoDaddysGarage That's what I said.
should i spray epoxy first then fill bad with filler
Yes.
@@JoDaddysGarage thanks
How can copper be plated?

🤔 hummmmmmm
You hafta check the oil levels every so often.
